Since Donald Trump was elected president of the US, the entire Trump family has been put under a microscope.

In China, the spotlight has been mainly focused on Trump and his daughter Ivanka. She is described on WeChat as an extremely influential role model with stunning beauty, a successful career, and a happy family.

She leads a dream life that a million girls would kill for. Yes, she was born with a silver spoon in her mouth. But she got where she is by herself.

There’s always going to be articles that say people born into wealthy families are better looking and have a better family background than you, but these people do work harder than you.

Are you a loser if you were raised in an ordinary family? Should you feel guilty that you sleep eight hours a day because Ivanka sleeps five? If you just want to keep a stable nine-to-five job, does it mean you are not ambitious? How about if you don’t work out or eat healthy, does that mean you will not find your Mr. or Miss Right?

There is a tendency in media nowadays to encourage elitism (精英主义).They are trying to brainwash young people into thinking that they should invest an enormous amount of time and money in bodybuilding and appearance improvement, even plastic(人造的) surgery. They encourage lifestyle makeovers: wine tasting classes and expensive trips overseas. They make you believe that if you do as they say, you can improve the quality of your life and join the elites(精英).

But what’s the downside of being ordinary? Do you really need to go to the gym five days a week unless you are a gym maniac (热衷者)? Do you need to take hundreds of selfies and photoshop selected ones to post on WeChat? Do you really need to break your neck and sacrifice to earn your first pot of gold only to worry constantly about how to enter high society later?

Don’t let the idea of elitism get to you. Everybody has a right to the life they want. Human beings should not be judged as a success or failure based on whether they are a part of the elite or not. As long as you lead a happy and comfortable life, why bother to chase(跟随) after other people’s shadows? Choose your own life path and go for it.

              (1) Why does Ivanka become a hit online?

              A. She together with her family is put under careful investigation.

              B. She gets what she has through personal efforts in spite of decent origin(体面出身).

              C. She is a virtual(虚拟的) role model frequently seen among ordinary people.

              D. She lives such a dream life that a million girls would like to kill her.

              (2) It can be inferred from the text that ____________.

              A. Ivanka sleeping five hours a day makes the vast majority guilty.

              B. Keeping a stable nine-to- five job will be thought of as a loser.

              C. Being successful is a commonly advocated(提倡的) culture nowadays

              D. Improving the quality of life will promote one’s social status.

              (3) Which attitude towards life would the writer probably agree with?

              A. There is only one success — to be able to spend your life in your own way.

              B. Life consists not in holding good cards but in playing those you hold well.

              C. Life is like a dogsled(狗拉雪橇) team. If you aren’t the lead dog, the scenery never changes.

              D. The greatest lesson in life is to know that even fools are right sometimes.

Though many people tell us we can’t succeed, we need to hear others’ opinions. I remember a friend telling me not to apply to Cornell University because they wouldn’t accept me and even if they did, I wouldn’t be able to do the work. I almost didn’t apply but a few days later I saw Ivan Goldfarb, a former teacher and asked him about Cornell. He said, “If you get in,then you go. You can do it.” His words made all the difference. I applied, and was accepted.
Too often we think it’s our role to put “reality” into someone’s life. We think it’s our job to protect people from the pain of failure and defeat. We think we must point out how bad the economy is and how horrible the job market is and how the sky is falling. We think that dreams are meant for others.
I say there are enough “realists” in the world. The world doesn’t need more negativity and impossible thinkers. The world needs more optimists, encouragers, and inspirers. The world needs more people to speak into the hearts of others and say “I believe in you.” “Follow your passion and live your purpose.” “The job market is not great but I believe you’ll find the right job for you.” and so on.
When it comes to encouragement, I know that everyone loves working for and with people who bring out the best in us. And while we'll always remember the negative people who told us we couldn’t accomplish something, we will always cherish and hold a special place in our heart for those who encouraged us.
Today I want to encourage you to be an encourager. So often the difference between success and failure is belief. And so often that belief is instilled (逐步灌输) in us by someone who encouraged us.

In the animal kingdom, weakness can bring about aggression in other animals. This sometimes happens with humans also. But I have found that my weakness brings out the kindness in people.I see it every day when people hold doors for me,pour cream into my coffee,or help me to put on my coat. And I have discovered that it makes them happy.

From my wheelchair experience,I see the best in people, but sometimes I feel sad because those who appear independent miss the kindness I see daily. They don’t get to see this soft side of others often;we try every way possible to avoid, showing our weakness, which includes a lot of pretending. But only when we stop pretending we’re brave or strong do we allow people to show the kindness that’s in them.Last month, when I was driving home on a busy highway,I began to feel unwell and drove more slowly than usual.People behind me began to get impatient and angry, with some speeding up alongside me,homing(按喇叭)or even shouting at me.At the moment I decided to do something I had never done in twenty four years of driving.I put on the car flashlights and drove on at a really low speed.

No more angry shouts and no more horns!

When I put on my flashlights,I was saying to other drivers,“I have a problem here.I am weak and doing the best I can.”And everyone understood.Several times,I saw drivers who wanted to pass. They couldn’t get around me because of the stream of passing traffic. But instead of getting impatient and angry, they waited, knowing the driver in front of them was in some way weak.

Sometimes situations call for us to act strong and brave even when we don’t feel that  way.But those are and far between.More often,it would be better if we don’t pretend we feel strong when we feel weak or pretend that we are brave when we are scared.

True friends double your happiness and half your burdens. Basically how you would like a true friend to be is what you should be like to your true friends. Trust, forgiveness, responsibility are some elements of a true friendship. True friendships are hard to achieve. And what’s more, life is short. So treasure these friends if you already have them. If you don’t continue to search, because once you have them, life will become so much easier to live, no matter what happens. I have been through very difficult times and I dare say, without my friends, I would not have made it.

Friendships need lots of energy and patience to maintain them. Not to mention time. When your friend needs you, and when things are not going too well on your side, it is often so easy to turn a deaf ear to their requests. It is especially during these times, that you must find the strength to help your friend. And it is during these times that your friendship will be made stronger.

And you must always be happy for their successes, even when things are not going too well for you. It might be hard to do this, but it is something that you need to learn. Think about all the sacrifices your friend has made for you and all the times when he was happy for you despite his own troubles. Think abut all the happy times you enjoyed and the sad, difficult times you went through together. That should give you plenty of patience to actually be a true friend. Remember, true friends are the next best thing to family. They will always be your supporters.

Americans are spoiled. Itˈs a fact. Today, teens have everything they want. As parents, we donˈt even stop to think that many arenˈt so fortunate. Just imagine:You come home from a tiring soccer practice, and all you want to do is drink up Lake Superior and get into bed. So, you go to the kitchen, pour yourself a huge glass of water. What if you have to walk six miles to a well for that drink? And carry back a heavy jug of water. And, after that, when youˈre about to fall down from thirst, you open the jug and find the filthiest water imaginable. There are little bugs floating in the brown water, and it smells horrible. However, youˈre dying of thirst and this is all youˈve got, so you drink up.

Iˈm guessing that has never happened to you or anyone you know. But itˈs life for millions of children. Africa is the second largest continent, home to 922 million people. Itˈs also the poorest and most underdeveloped continent. Thirtysix percent of the population of Africa lives on less than $1 per day. Thatˈs less than what a bottle of soda costs. With this dollar, they have to feed their families, which can include several generations. These people canˈt afford wells for every household like we can. They donˈt even have wells for all the schools. This means that every day, people — generally children — have to walk several miles to get a couple of gallons of dirty water for their family. They know that the water is bad for them, but thatˈs all theyˈve got. They must drink it or die of thirst.

I hope I got through to you about the terrible problems people face when they donˈt have clean water. You can do something about it. Think about that, and look at your life. What if you got excited whenever you poured a glass of water or flushed a toilet? Itˈs these small things that are the true gifts of life.

              61_______

As awareness of the benefits of humour increases, most of us want to get all the laughs we can. It seems that almost every day there is another new discovery about the power of humour to help us physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Every system of the body responds to laughter in some important or positive way .

              62_______

Many people mistakenly believe that we are born with a sense of humour. They think that when it comes to a sense of humour. “either you have got it or you don't . ” This is false! What is true, however, is that the ability to laugh and smile is actually something we are born with. For example, we laugh when we are tickled under the arm, even without thinking about how to react.

              63_________

The parts of the brain and central nervous system that control laughing and smiling are mature at birth in human infants, but that is not the same thing as having a sense of humour. (After all, when a baby laughs in his small bed we don’t rush over and say, “That kid has a great sense of humour!”) Your sense of humour is something you can develop over a lifetime. Don’t be nervous before others and try to laugh at yourself-then you will make them laugh too.

              64________

Humour includes a lot more than laughing and joke telling. Many people worry needlessly that they do not have a good sense of humour because they are not good joke tellers. More than jokes, a sense of humour requires being willing and able to see the funny side of life’s situations as they happen. In fact, one of the best definitions(定义)of a sense of humour is “the ability to see the nonserious element in a situation. ”

              65 _________

There may be a thousand different ways to express your sense of humour, but joke telling is only one of those ways. As more is discovered about how humour benefits our life, more people will be able to see and enjoy the humour when they are in a difficult situation. Life depends on air, food and water, but it is made easier to live with a good sense of humour.
