When I was in primary school, I got into a major argument with a boy in my class. I can't      (1)  what it was about, but I have never forgotten the      (2)  I learned that day.

    I was     (3)  that I was right and he was wrong-and he was sure that I was wrong and he was right. The     (4)  decided to teach us a very important lesson. She    (5)  both of us up to the     (6)  of the class and     (7)  him on one side of her desk and me on     (8)  . In the middle of her desk was a large, round object. I could     (9)  see that it was black. She asked the boy what     (10)  the object was. “White,” he answered.

    I couldn't believe he said the object was white,     (11)  it was obviously black! Another     (12)  started between my classmate and me, this     (13)  about the color of the object.

    The teacher told me to go to stand where the boy was standing and told him to come to stand where I had been. We changed     (14)  , and now she asked me what the color of the object was. I     (15)  answer, “White.” It was an object with two     (16)  colored sides, and from his side it was white.     (17)     from my side was the color black.

    My teacher taught me a very important lesson that day: You must    (18)  in the other person's

shoes and look at the      (19)  through their eyes in order to      (20)  understand their view.

I used to believe politeness was a thing of the past, but I had to change my thinking after my experience in a happening coffee place with two of my grown-up daughters. The place was  (1)  so we had to climb a  (2)  and steep(陡的) flight of stairs in order to find an empty table. After  (3)  coffee and snacks, we were going down the stairs one by one, leaving hardly any  (4)  for another person to either climb up or come down.

Just as I was in the middle of my way down,a gentleman  (5)  the restaurant through the main entrance,which was right  (6)  the staircase. I was sure I would be   (7)  roughly by this man who would want to go up in a hurry. I kept coming down as fast as I could,   (8)  the banister(扶手). My  (9)  were already down, looking up at me  (10)  , hoping I would reach them  (11)  the stranger started up the stairs, knowing I was a nervous sort. Nearly reaching them, I  (12)  the man still standing near the  (13)  . I reached my daughters and passed the  (14)  at the entrance door which he  (15)  holding open.

Looking back on this matter, all three of us felt  (16)  that we did not even thank the  (17)  gentleman who was actually holding the door open for us ladies to  (18)  through before going up. Such well-mannered people are hard to find these days, when jostling(推撞) and pushing is  (19)  in our advanced but aggressive(好斗的) society. The gentleman in the coffee place restored my faith in human  (20)  .

I have always considered myself a positive optimist, trying to find the best in every situation. Iˈve recently become aware of how two little  (1)   have had a great impact on people.

My son  (2)  to tell me about a house he was interested in.I said, "Honey, I am glad that youˈve found something you like,   (3)  …"There, I continued, "Donˈt you think,with the gas prices, you might want to buy one  (4)  to your work?" As he told me all about the possible house, I could hear the  (5)  in his voice. The moment I spoke the word, BUT, it was  (6)   I pricked a balloon with a needle（针）.I could hear him slowly deflate（泄气）. I  (7)  that if I had used the word AND—"Honey, Iˈm glad you found a house in your  (8)  range, AND Iˈm happy for you."—he wouldnˈt have been  (9)  , and weˈd have both hung up feel better.

My daughter  (10)  at my door dressed like a princess on her way to the prom. I told her how graceful looked and I was  (11)  of the young lady she has become, and I said, "Sweetheart, you  (12)  having a great time, but please donˈt drink tonight." I know she doesnˈt engage in  (13)  behavior; sheˈs responsible and sensible. She looked as though Iˈd snatched her crown. "Mom!" The tone of her voice indicated how Iˈd  (14)  her feel. How I wish Iˈd said, "I want you to have a great time, AND I   (15)  you."

My husband helps around the house. I was  (16)  he had lightened my work load. I told him how wonderful he is, and I used that naughty word again."BUT,why did you  (17)  crumbs（面包屑）all over the counter? "Why?Why?Why didnˈt I say," Thank you, AND I am  (18)  or all you do around the house."

Iˈve been doing some  (19)  . I am going to remove that naughty little word from my  (20)  and replace it with the word AND. This is a decision I intend to keep!

We should show respect to everybody, especially our elders because they are ahead of us – in age, in wisdom and maturity, in experience and education. Our   (1)  have done a lot for us, directly or indirectly and most of us  (2)   everything to their kindness and love.

When we   (3)  them respect, whether it is by bowing to them, or  (4)  them with a smile, or offering them any help they need, it is one way of   (5)  our own love and gratitude to them.   (6)   , elders have also been through all the years you are  (7)   and know a little more about the world than you do.

It is  (8)   that you do not agree with the belief of your elders, but this is nothing new. All younger generations have always  (9)  with their elders and it is these differences that bring changes  in human  (10)  . However much you disagree with them, give them credit for their    (11)    .

With changing times and  (11)   influences, youngsters no longer know what is interpreted as disrespect to elders. Youngsters should   (12)   express their views and if there are arguments, they should not   (13)  their voices.

If there is no space on sofas or chairs, children will immediately  (14)   their places, and sit on the carpet. In buses and trains, youngsters are  (15)   to give up their places to older people. This is not a   (16)  of who has more rights. It is simply that those who are younger have the strength to bear   (17)   , or tolerate unpleasantness, so it is natural to show consideration to those who are older and perhaps at a   (18)  disadvantage.

When you do simple things as a mark of respect, elders become   (19)   that youngsters care for them, and they respond with affection and kindness.

Recently, several friends came to me. They hadn’t   (1)   video games before. They had been told that video games were   (2)   . But they saw many people doing that and  (3)   that some had become millionaires because of video games. They felt very   (4)   . So they came to me and asked, “Keith, should I play video games?”

   It’s an interesting question for two   (5)   . Firstly, I write about video games for a   (6)   ; that’s my job. So what did they think I was going to say? “No, they’re a waste of   (7)  ” ? Secondly, a few years ago, people of my age   (8)   playing video games; now there are people feeling guilty that they’re not playing them.

   So should you play video games? Yes! Games have been proved to   (9)    hand-eye coordination(协作), decision making, and even vision. Games help players enjoy a   (10)   social life as some games   (11)   you to play together with others. Some may say that playing video games is a waste of time. If you’re    (12)    to watch TV for three hours a day or surf on the Internet for    (13)   important or talk with friends over the phone for hours, you cannot call video games a waste of time.

    So my   (14)   is: yes, you can play video games. But there is one important thing for you to   (15)  : just play the games that can   (16)    do good to you. So please think   (17)   about whether you should play a game or not before you start playing it.   (18)   you don’t know anything about the game, ask for others’ opinion or   (19)   on the Internet for comments. Also, don’t play too long every day. After all, for students   (20)   come first.

It often appears that we have more to gain by speaking than by listening. One big advantage of speaking is that it gives you a chance to control others’ thoughts and actions. Whatever your goal is — to have a boss hire you, to  (1)  others to vote for the person of your  (2)  or to describe the   (3)  that you want your hair cut ... the key to success seems to be the  (4)  to speak well.

    Another    (5)  advantage of speaking is the chance it provides to  (6)  the admiration, respect, or liking of others. Tell jokes, and everyone will think you’re really a   (7)  man. Tell them all you know, and they’ll be   (8)   by your wisdom. But keep quiet, and it seems as if you are a   (9)  person.

    Finally, talking gives you the   (10)  to release (释放) energy in a way that listening can’t. When you’re  (11)  , the chance to talk about your problems can often help you feel better. In the same way, you can often  (12)  your anger by letting it out orally. It is also helpful to  (13)  your excitement with others by talking about it,    (14)   keeping it inside often leaves you feeling as if you might burst.

    While it is true that talking does have many advantages, it’s important to   (15)   that listening can do good to listeners, too. As you’ll soon read, being a good listener is one good way to  (16)  others with their problems; and what better way is there to have others   (17)   you? As for controlling others, it may be true that it’s hard to be persuasive while you’re listening, but your   (18)  to hear others out will often make them open to your ideas  (19)  . Listening is often reciprocal (互惠的). “You get what you   (20)  .”

When my son Gene was about 12 years old, I started helping him learn to  (1)  . I bought twenty chickens and asked him to  (2)  them. I told him that they would be his own chickens and we would  (3)  the eggs from him. However, he would have to buy chicken   (4)  with the money he made from the eggs. Whatever money was   (5)   would be his to keep. Gene was  (6)  , thinking he would make his first  (7)  .

   After several weeks’ successful work, I began to  (8)   that egg production was going down. I  (9)  nothing about it. Then one night, Gene told me he didn’t have   (10)   money to buy the feed. He said the chickens had never  (11)  a meal and he could not figure out why some of them had stopped  (12)   eggs.

   Then I asked him if he had  (13)  the amount of feed he had given the chickens. He was   (14)  . It was like he did not think anyone would ever  (15)   what he had done. After a long   (16)  , he said yes. He thought he would make more money if he gave them  (17)  food. I asked him, “Did you fool the chickens?”

    I was just astonished at the question in my own  (18)  .I was dumbfounded (惊呆) at the  (19)  of it. Yes, you can fool everyone else, but you cannot “fool the chickens,” because   (20)  , you will find out, as the saying goes, “What goes around comes around.”

If you have a little child, who hates sitting in a child car seat, then the Freedom Ride is the answer to your problem.
