There is one thing that everyone wants more than anything else. Some people try to get it by making money. They think that when they have enough money to buy such things as houses, farms, and cars, they will have the one thing that everyone wants.

Other people believe that if they know enough they will find this thing. They study all their lives in search of it. Still others think that if they have power, they will find this thing. They keep telling themselves: When I am a boss, I will no longer have to search for this thing.

What is it that everyone wants more than anything else? What is it that all of us keep working and striving for each day? It is happiness.

Happiness is a strange thing. It does not mean to all men. What will make one man happy may not make another man happy. Some men say that happiness comes from helping others, other men say that happiness comes from making life more pleasant for everyone. What do you mean when you say: "That makes me happy."

Read what different people have said about happiness. Perhaps you will learn something that will bring you peace of mind, comfort, money or it may be what you search for-happiness.

Hypnosis(催眠) is the ability to control your own mind and get rid of any negative emotions or habits that keep getting in your way. Hypnosis has a long history of helping human beings to be the very best they can be. It can be used to control anything controlled by the unconscious (无意识) mind—pain, blood pressure, fear, confidence levels, moods and it is also regarded as the key to unlocking your creativity, focusing your energy and understanding yourself.

I know what you're thinking—what on earth does stress management have to do with hypnosis? Well, quite a lot, actually! You see, when you know self-hypnosis, you can put yourself into a deeply calm meditative (沉思) state. Stress is fed on stress, so when you break the cycle—even with only ten minutes of deep trance(催眠状态)—you'll feel full of energy and ready to take on the day. Regularly doing this means you'll be able to see tasks so much more clearly and be able to organize yourself without the fog that stress traps you in.

Time stands still at those magical moments because you're absorbed in something creative. Whether it's writing, playing a musical instrument, or even working on a business idea, being creative is a deep and pleasurable trance state(昏睡状态). With self-hypnosis, you can learn how to tap into it regularly and just see how bursts of creativity improve your life.

Ever feel like your kids or your partner doesn't get the best out of you? We can all feel tired, moody, or stressed sometimes and then cry to those we love most. But with hypnosis, you won't get emotionally hijacked(控制). And with the new understanding of psychology hypnosis gives you, you'll be able to communicate much better with that tough colleague(同事) or neighbor.

Dealing with the workplace bully (欺凌弱小者). Standing your ground with your mother-in-law,handling a fear, being confident in face of that "friend" who always seems to get his own way… When you learn how to use self-hypnosis, you can emotionally prepare for the encounter (遭遇), taking over these stressful situations. Life is so much easier when you feel like you can face anything!

You know that feeling when you're reading a book or watching a film and you're so concentrated on it, yu're barely aware time is passing? When you know hypnosis, you can quickly go into that trance state. Just think of what you could achieve if you spend an hour a day completely "in the zone". There's a reason why so many top athletes use hypnosis for sporting success.

              Spotting communication problems

A report noted that the single biggest reason people fail to advance in their careers is lack of good communication skills. There are several signs you can use to determine whether you or others have communication problems. Begin by asking yourself some questions about the way you communicate.

Do you use proper body language?Remember, when you communicate. It’s not just the words that convey a message; it’s “the composite(综合的) you”. This composite takes into account your body language. For example, if you stand with your back half-turned to someone, if you look away very often, if your head is lowered, or if you look like you’re about to walk away, your body language is sending a signal that you’re not interested in having a conversation.

Do you give silent moments? The next time you have a conversation with a co-worker make a mental note of how many times you’re silent. Periodic silences let people ask questions, acknowledge that they understand what you’re saying, and offer ideas of their own.

Do you speak too fast? This is one of the most common communication barriers. A slow rate of speech suggests well-chosen words and strengthens the importance of the message you’re conveying. Talking to people in an unhurried manner also gives the listener time to absorb what you have said.

Do you make eye contact? When you make eye contact, you’re telling someone that you’re interested in him or her, that you think the person is important, and that you want to hear what he or she has to say.

Do you interrupt? People who cut others off in mid-sentence not only send an unkind message (‘‘I really don’t care about what you are saying”), they also cut themselves out of the communication process. Remember that communication is an exchange, and we learn more from listening than from talking.

Being a good communicator is a natural skill for only a few people. Most of us have to work at it.

              (1) What’s the biggest reason that people can’t advance in their careers? (no more than 5 words)

              (2) What can we know from asking ourselves those questions in the text? (no more than 10 words)

              (3) What does the person show while his head is lowered during the conversation? (no more than 10 words)

              (4) What does the underlined word “rate” in Paragraph 4 probably mean? (1 word)

              (5) What’s your problem for a conversation? How do you deal with it? (no more than 25 words)

              阅读下面的短文,请根据短文后的要求答题(请注意问题后的字数要求)

As you have probably noticed, some students are more successful than others when taking exams, often because they have better test-taking skills. These are abilities that really have nothing to do with their understanding of the subjects. They are strategic skills that make taking tests easier, and lead to better results.

Here are some tips that will make it easier for you to take a test successfully.

Do not insist on completing each question before going to the next. If you spend a lot of time on one question that you don’t understand, you will both lose time and make yourself nervous. If you lose time, you may not get to later questions that you could have answered easily.

Furthermore, if you become nervous, you might lose your concentration. Go through the test a second time with any time you have left at the end to work out the answers to the more difficult questions. You’ll feel more confident by now and you may find that the questions you’ve already answered will help you answer the more difficult ones. Few people are aware that sometimes questions are answered later in a test in a different context. Do keep in mind that to take advantage of this you need to have finished the test and still have some time remaining to return to the questions you have problems with.

If you have a strong feeling about your first answer to a question, don’t go back and change it later. Usually (but not always) a strong first impulse means you know the answer, and don’t have to think about it again. Going back will make you unsure and often lead to an error. This is very common, so be careful!

              (1) What’s the best title of the passage? (No more than 5 words)
              (2) What may happen if a student spends too much time on a question? (No more than 15 words)
              (3) Please explain the underlined phrase “take advantage of” in English. (No more than 5 words)
              (4) According to the passage, what should you do when you have some time left in the exam?(No more than 20 words)
              (5) Among the tips mentioned above, which do you think is the most useful and why? (No more than 30 words)

Perhaps one of the most terrible weather phenomena(现象)is the tornado. The unpredictability of a tornado produces fear in many areas. Tornadoes are one of nature’s most devastating storms, but they don’t last long. The average length of a tornado is only five to thirty minutes, but the places they travel to are often ruined.

The strong winds of a tornado can tear just almost anything from the ground including trees, vehicles, and even houses. Another damaging effect of tornadoes is actually from the debris(碎片)that the storm picks up. People have been buried alive by houses or mud picked up and then dropped by a tornado, but also lightning that the storm produces. It can cause fires and electrical problems.

If there is a tornado approaching, what safety measures should you take? First, it is important to realize that there is no specific way to know if a storm is going to produce a tornado. Scientists have only developed warning systems that tell them if a storm is capable of producing a tornado.

During severe weather, leave a radio on. It’s inexpensive and could save your life. If you hear the announcer say there is a tornado warning that means the conditions are correct for forming a tornado. A tornado warning means a tornado has been seen.

If you find yourself in danger, find shelter in the lowest possible place, such as a basement (地下室). If your home does not have a basement, go to the safest room. Stay away from windows or anything heavy like furniture. A bathroom is a good location. Take your battery-powered radio to your shelter and turn it on. Kneel(跪)on the floor and cover your head with your hands. This is the best position to avoid damage during a tornado.

              (1) What’s the meaning of the underlined word “devastating” in Paragraph 1? (No more than 2 words)

Most people think that making a film is exciting. In fact, sometimes it is and sometimes it isn't. Earlier this year, I worked in a new film. It was about a bomb threat on a big British ship. Two hundred people were needed to act as the passengers in the film. I was one of them.

Before we left, we were required to bring some warm clothes. These were necessary because the ship was going to spend the whole 16 days sailing in bad weather.

Then the day came and we sailed out of Dover. The boat had on board the film crew, the director, the actors and actresses including Brinksley Meers, who acted the leading role, and us-200 amateur extras.

People came for different purposes. Some wanted to meet Brinksley Meers in person. Others were curious to see how a film was made. A housewife with her three children came for free holiday and a bit of adventure.

During the voyage, a lot of people were very seasick. And although the work was very interesting, it was also very hard. We often worked all day on one scene, performing it again and again under the hot lights. In the evenings, there were drinks in the bar, but most people were so tired that they went to bed early. The next day often began at 6:30 in the moming, sometimes with breakfast being filmed.

When the ship finally returned to port, most people had enjoyed the trip, but were also so tired that they at least needed a week's holiday.

                   Answer the following questions:

              (1) Which role did the author act in the film?

              (2) Why were the film crew asked to bring some warm clothes?

              (4) Why did the author say "they at least needed a week's holiday"?

              (5) Can you infer the author's purpose of writing this article?

There are a great many good exercises. They are helpful and healthful. Many of them may be taken indoors during rainy weather. Indoor exercises, however, are never as helpful as those taken out of doors in pure, fresh air. It is because in fresh air more oxygen is taken into our body systems and more wastes are given off. The air in the house does not remain fresh very long. But out of doors it is usually fresh and pure.

But what shall we play? There are a number of games such as football, baseball, races…Any game with plenty of movement is good. The best are those which are played out of doors.

Do not neglect your body. It is as much important as your mind. Our country now needs men with strong minds, good judgment and healthy bodies. (共208字)

              How Arts Promote Our Economy

When most people think of the arts, they imagine the end product, the beautiful painting, a wonderful piece of music, or an award﹣winning performance in the theater. But arts groups bring broader value to our communities. The economic impact of the arts is often overlooked and badly judged.

The arts create jobs that help develop the economy. Any given performance takes a tour bus full of artists, technical experts, managers, musicians, or writers to create an appealing piece of art. These people earn a living wage for their professional knowledge and skills.

Another group of folks is needed to help market the event. "If you build it they will come" is a misleading belief. Painters, digital media experts, photographers, booking agents and promoters are hired to sell tickets and promote the event. According to the Dallas Area Cultural Advocacy Coalition, arts agencies employ more than 10,000 people as full﹣or part﹣time employees or independent contractors.

A successful arts neighborhoods creates a ripple effect(连锁反应)throughout a community. In 2005, when the Bishop Arts Theatre was donated to our town, the location was considered a poor area of town. After investing more than﹩1 million in reconstructing the building, we began producing a full season of  theater performances, jazz concerts, and year﹣round arts education programs in 2008. Nearly 40 percent of jazz lovers live outside of the Dallas city limits and drive or fly in to enjoy an evening in the Bishop Arts District.

No doubt the theater has contributed to the area's development and economic growth. Today, there are galleries, studios, restaurants and newly built work spaces where neighbors share experiences, where there is renewed life and energy. In this way, arts and culture also serve as a public good.

Teco Theatrical Productions Inc. made use of Bloomberg's investment of﹩35,000 to get nearly﹩400,000 in public and private sector support during the two﹣year period. Further, Dallas arts and arts﹣based businesses produce﹩298 for every dollar the city spends on arts programming and facilities. In Philadelphia, a metro area smaller than Dallas, the arts have an economic impact of almost﹩3 million and support 44,000 jobs, 80 percent of which actually lie outside the arts industry, including accountants, marketers, construction workers, hotel managers, printers, and other kinds of art workers.

The arts are efficient economic drivers and when they are supported, the entire small﹣business community benefits.

It is wrong to assume arts groups cannot make a profit. But in order to stay in business, arts groups must produce returns. If you are a student studying the arts, chances are you have been ill﹣advised to have a plan B. But those who truly understand the economic impact and can work to change the patterns can create a wide range of career possibilities.
