When I arrived at 6 a.m. in the large hospital kitchen, Rose was already checking name tags on the trays (托盘).
Hi, I'm Janet."I tried to sound cheerful, although I already knew Rose's reputation for being impossible to work with. "I'm scheduled to work with you this week."
Rose stopped what she was doing and peered over her reading glasses. I could tell from her expression she wasn't pleased to sec a student worker.
"What do you want me to do? Start the coffee?"I asked.
Rose coldly nodded and went back to checking name tags.
I filled the 40-cup pot with water and began making the coffee when Rose yelled, "That's not the way to make coffee."She stepped in and took over.
Nothing I did pleased her. All morning, her eagle eyes missed nothing and her sharp words hurt.
Totally exhausted, I trudged the six blocks home late that June afternoon. As a third year university student working my way through school, I had never before met anyone like Rose.
Fighting back tears, I wrestled with my dilemma alone in my room. "What shall I do?"The answer caught me completely by surprise. I needed to love Rose.
Working with Rose the next morning, I ignored the hurtful remarks thrown in my direction and did things Rose's way as much as possible. As I worked, I silently began to surround Rose with a warm blanket of love.
Over the next few days, an amazing thing began to happen. My focus shifted from what she was doing to me and I started seeing Rose as the hurting person she was. Then her icy tension began to melt away
Throughout the rest of the summer, we had numerous opportunities to work together. Each time, she seemed truly happy to see me. Her bitterness gave way as she started opening up. As I worked with this lonely woman, I listened to her, something no one else had done. I learned that she was burdened by elderly parents who needed her care and her own health problems.
The days slipped by quickly as I finished the last several weeks of my summer job. I soon would be returning as a full-time university student and say goodbye to Rose.

Bobby was getting cold sitting out in his backyard in the snow. Bobby didn't wear boots; or rather, he didn't own any. The thin sneakers he wore had a few holes in them and they did a poor job of keeping out the cold.
Bobby had been in his backyard for about an hour already. Try as he might, he could not come up with an idea for his mother's Christmas gift. He shook his head as he thought, "This is useless. Even if I do come up with an idea, I don't have any money for a gift."
Wiping tears from his eyes, Bobby started walking down to the street where the shops were. It wasn't easy being six without a father, particularly when he needed a man to talk to.
Bobby walked from shop to shop, looking into each decorated window. Everything seemed so beautiful but so out of reach. It was starting to get dark and Bobby reluctantly turned to walk home when suddenly his eyes caught the glimmer (激光)of the setting sun's rays reflecting on something on the roadside. He reached down and discovered a shiny dime (一角硬币).
Never before has anyone felt as wealthy as Bobby did at that moment. As lie held his newly-found treasure, warmth spread throughout his entire body and he walked into the first store. His excitement quickly turned cold when salesperson after salesperson told him that he could not buy anything with only a dime.
He saw a flower shop and went inside to wait in line. When the shop owner asked if he could help him, Bobby presented the dime and asked if he could buy one flower for his mother's Christmas gift. The shop owner looked at Bobby and his one dime offering. Then he put his hand on Bobby's shoulder, saying, "You just wait here and I'll see what I can do for you." As Bobby waited, he looked at the beautiful flowers and even though he was a boy, he could see why mothers and girls loved flowers.

Li Shuangying said her 18-year-old son, who just took this year's college entrance exam, would become a professional in the artificial intelligence (AI) field.
Artificial intelligence is the branch of computer science concerned with making computers behave like humans. The requirement for AI talents is a solid foundation of maths and English, so for senior high graduates, they should have a higher mathematical thinking ability and have a good command of English if they want to become professionals in AI.
Li Shuangying said her son always has been one of the top students in his class at one of the leading high schools in Zhongshan, Guangdong province. Zhongshan, which neighbors Guangzhou has been one of China's pioneering cities in embracing reform and opening up. It flourished(繁荣)on labor-intensive industries, but recent rising labor shortages and costs have become a real threat. In response, local manufacturers(制造商)have been quick to embrace automation(自动化)and adopt AI-assisted robots for survival.
The company Li works for, a medium-sized home appliance manufacturer with annual output of about 1 billion yuan ($150 milllion), is no exception. Li said she used to bring her son to her workplace from time to time, and he has developed a strong interest in AI, automation and robots.
"Our family all agree that AI is the trend, and it holds great potential for future development," Li said. That view is shared by many college students and their parents, who consider AI a desirable major.

Everyone is familiar with the phrase "Hard work is the key to success".  Some people think that luck is the only solution to success while many others believe that success includes compromise, persistence, dedication, and failures.  To conclude it, I consider that "Success is an iceberg".  We are all acquainted with the structure of the iceberg which floats in the sea.  Only a small portion of the iceberg is visible while the large portion is hidden under the water.  Iceberg can be perfectly related with success.  Achievement, which is seen by everyone, can be compared to the visible portion of the iceberg while the hard work behind success is the bottom of the iceberg.

"Got your cellphone? Glasses? Wallet? ID?" I asked.

"Yes," my husband Avraham smiled. "Can we go now? You've got to meet your interview before I go to see my patient at one o'clock."

                 "Right. Got your medical bag?"

                 "Yes."

Even years after moving from North America, we still loved the half-hour drive to Jerusalem (耶路撒冷). The blue sky above the mountains, the trees, and the journey up to the Holy City always filled us with gratitude for living in Israel.

As we sped along, we came to our favorite part of the journey, where a wonderful view of Jerusalem suddenly appeared above the roadway. We had had a good time and arrived at my meeting with time to spare.

After my interview, I met Avraham at our favorite cafe. Avraham ordered his daily iced coffee and a bag of fresh bread. Glancing at the clock, I suggested we go to see his patient.

Avraham had to visit an elderly woman in Jerusalem because her daughter had called the day before to arrange the appointment. As there are very few foot specialists in Israel, Avraham would travel all over the country to see patients requiring specialized foot care. He searched his pockets for a note on which he had written the address.

But the note was nowhere to be found.

"I don't believe it! I must have left the address at home."

"Do you remember any part of the address?" I asked.

"I remember that there was a number 17 in it, because it was part of my birth date."

"Do you know the street name?"

"No. Just that it's in this neighborhood."

I had heard the family name mentioned the day before and remembered it sounded like a European name. "Let's try looking at buildings and see if the mailboxes can give us some help," I offered.

Last week, my granddaughter started kindergarten, and I wished her success. I was lying. What I actually wish for her is failure. I belive in the power of failure.

Success is boring. Success is proving that you can do something that you already know you can do, or doing something correctly the first time, which can often be an uncertain victory. First-time success is usually a piece of luck. First-time failure, by contrast, is expected. It is the natural order of things.

Failure is how we learn. I have been told of an African phrase describing a good cook as she who has broken many pots. If you've spent enough time in the kitchen to have broken a lot of pots, probably you know a lot about cooking. I once had a dinner witha group of chefs, and they spent time comparing knife wounds and burn scars. They knew how much certainty their failures gave them.

I earn my living by writing a daily newspaper column. Each week I am aware that one column is going to be the worst column. I don't set out to write it. I try my best every day and I have learned to cherish that column. Often in my columns of poor quality,I am trying to get through something I've never done before, something I'm not even sure can be done.

My younger daughter is a trapeze artist (荡秋千演员). She spent three years putting together an act. She did it successfully for years. There was no reason for her to change the act, but she did anyway. She said she was no longer learning anything new and she was bored.

So she changed the act. She risked failure and public embarrassment in order to feed her soul. My granddaughter is a perfectionist. She will feel her failures. I hope I can tell her, though, that it isn't the end of the world. Indeed, with luck, it is the beginning.

              (1) What's the writer's lie to his granddaughter? (No more than 6 words)
              (2) What does the writer want to express by giving the experience of different people? (No more than 15 words)
              (3) What does the underlined phrase"by contrast"mean? (No more than 5 words)
              (4) Why does the writer's daughter change the act? (No more than 10 words)
              (5) Do you agree with the last two sentences" I hope I can tell her, though, that it isn't the end of the world. Indeed, with luck, it is the beginning."? Why or Why not? (No more than 25 words)

I stood at the edge of the cliff. The wind stung my eyes, cutting into my skin. Dark-feathered birds circled the air, swooping (俯冲) low over the ocean every now and then to catch their dinner. Hundreds of feet below, the deep ocean beat against the rough sandy shore. I took a deep breath, filling my lungs with excitement —— and at the same time, fear.

Behind me, I heard the rest of the crew start to mutter. I was here for the shooting of a movie as I was one of the lead actors in the film Dangerous Things, and this scene was right in the middle of the climax (高潮). It was vital that this went right.

The director had talked to me about getting a stunt double (替身演员), but I'd persuaded him that I could handle the dive. I'd taken a diving course a few years ago, and I'd been taking swimming lessons since I was five years old. I had been pretty confident that I could do this—up till now.

Someone called out, "Ceria, you don't have to do this! Are you sure you want to dive?" It was one of the producers, Callie Evans. I knew I couldn't turn back now. I couldn't bear to see the disappointed look on the director's face when he was told that I couldn't do it.

At that moment, all my fears and worries broke free. The expectation of adventure and victory seemed to move all the hesitation. I swooped downwards. The air on either side of me cut into my extended arms. I knew that this wonderful feeling of flight would only last a few seconds, yet time seemed to slow down so I could hear the thrilled whoops of my crew and a round of applause that seemed to echo in my pounding ears.

This is a picture of a ballet dancer whose left foot looks shockingly different from the right one. Someone even jokes that the left foot represents how elegant ballet dancers look. On the contrary, the right one reveals the nature of those dancers' life. One can hardly imagine how much time and effort have been devoted to endless practice.
