“Those people” is a phrase that is used typica11y in a negative way-like, 1ook at“those people” who arenˈt dressed the way we think itˈs right to dress. We live in a society that is so crue1 and judgmenta1 to those who donˈt fit the type of what is acceptable in othersˈ opinion.

“Those people” can be anyone that isnˈt“worthy(值得尊敬)”according to someone else. Everyone is equa1ly worthy of 1ove and support, but not everyone can see value in people that are different and need a different kind of support. People who survived middle schoo1 and high schoo1 can remember how socia1ly separated they were. They come in many various forms-people with specia1 needs, people who have a different skin co1or, culture, economic or family background compared to most of the peers. A11 of them are just as deserving of 1ove and friendship as norma1 people.

We need to be more accepting of those peopleˈs behaviors and struggles. By being nice to“those people”, you could help make someoneˈs day or save his or her 1ife. Iˈm not saying you need to be the best friend with everyone you meet, because that isnˈt realistic. Iˈm saying that the world would be a much happier place if we a11 took a few minutes out of our day to say“he11o” to others, particularly those who are struggling.

So next time you see someone sitting a1one at lunch,,invite him or her over. You cou1d be his or her ray of sunshine in a c1oudy sky. Who knows, you might even meet your best friend or the 1ove of your life.

People who like travelling have their reasons. They believe that travelling can help them expand their field of view, especially in the geographical and historical sense. They also think that touring will give them more chances to enjoy different kinds of food and experience newthings that would never be brought by other activities. But those who dislike travelling also have some reasons.

Travelling, in my opinion, does more good than harm. Most importantly,it broadens(使扩大)our mind. We can get in touch with other civilizations(文明), cultures, customs and ideas.

Through history, most people travelled because of necessity(必要性)-not for pleasure. People travelled just in order to remain alive. They searched for food to eat or places to live in. They sometimes ran away from enemies. This is not to say that no one ever travelled just for fun of it. In ancient times, for example, rich Romans travelled all the ways to Greece to take part in the Olympic Games, and festivals. Of course, some people decided to travel just out of curiosity(好奇心).They wanted to find out what it looked like beyond the horizon(地平线). Also business travel has been going on for centuries. Traders could not only make money but also learn to speak several languages and be introduced to different cultures.

So, travelling does enrich our mind and draw new ideas to us. There is no doubt that we can get much from it.

A warm drink of milk before bed has long been the best choice for those wanting a good night’s sleep. But now a study has found it really does help people nod off – if it is milked from a cow at night.

Researchers have discovered that “night milk” contains more melatonin (褪黑激素), which has been proved to help people feel sleepy and reduce anxiety.

The study, by researchers from Seoul,South Korea, involved mice being fed with dried milk powder made from cows milked both during the day and at night.

Those given night milk, which contained 10 times the amount of melatonin, were less active and less anxious than those fed with the milk collected during daytime, according to the study published in The Journal of Medicinal Food.

Night milk quickened the start of sleep and caused the mice to sleep longer.

While the effect of cows milk harvested at different time has not been tested on humans up to now, taking melatonin drugs has been suggested to those who are struggling to fall asleep at night.

Previous studies have also indicated that milk can be excellent for helping sleep because of the calcium content, which helps people to relax.

Milk is also sugar-free and additive-free with nutritionists recommending skimmed milk as the best choice before bed as it is the least fattening. The more fat you take in before bedtime, the greater burden you will put on your body at night.

Successful students have good study habits. They apply these habits to all of their classes. Read about each study habit. Work to develop any study habit you do not have.

■Study at the same time each day.

This sets a timetable that becomes a regular part of your life, just like sleeping and eating. When a scheduled study time comes up during the day,you will be mentally prepared to begin studying.

■Set specific goals for the study time.

Goals will help you stay focused and check your progress. Simply sitting down to study has little value. You must be very clear about what you want to get during your study time.

                 ■Start studying when planned.

You may delay(拖延) starting your studying because you don't like a task or think it is too hard. If you procrastinate for any reason, you will find it difficult to get everything done when you need to. You may hurry to finish, resulting in careless work and mistakes.

■Work on the most difficult task first.

Your most difficult task will require the most effort. Start with your most difficult task since this is when you have the most mental energy.

■Review the notes before beginning a task.

Reviewing your notes can help you make sure you are carrying out a task correctly. Also, your notes may include information that will help you complete a task.

■Review the schoolwork over the weekend.

Weekends should be fun time. But there is also time to do some review. This will help you be ready to go on Monday morning when another school week begins.

It’s wellknown that teeth grinding (磨牙) is bad for your teeth. Three experts offer their advice on what to do about it.

Martin:People bite their teeth because they are stressed. All this happens at night, and patients often go without any pain. We see patients who get into middle age and have worn their teeth down. Those who are in pain are more likely to grind from stress. If you get clicking noises in the jaw when eating French bread, you may be grinding in your sleep. The plastic gum shield, known as a bite raiser, breaks that habit of closing the jaw. Patients wear them at night for a week or so and then can stop this. If the grinding starts again years later, they can wear it again for a week. The bite raiser is really effective.

Stanley:There are all sorts of things that happen during the night, such as sleep walking, talking, and teeth grinding. These are known as parasomnias (异常睡眠). Anxiety and stress, and anything that can disturb sleep can cause these events. As with any of the stressrelated parasomnias, there’s little you can do other than trying to get a better night’s sleep. Wind you mind and body down before sleep, to switch off from the stresses of the day. It could be anything that relaxes you-yoga, reading a good book, listening to your favorite music.

Peter:Bruxism exists because of unreleased anxiety. The dental response is to issue a gum shield, but they are awful to sleep with. They focus on the symptom, rather than the driver of the behaviour. Origins of bruxism almost always lie in childhood. Even a small experience such as a cross word from a parent can become a fear. Each night, take an appraisal (评价) of the day: are you holding on to any stresses? How is your relationship going? Find a way to let go of these things. Teeth grinding is an acquired behaviour and you can release yourself from it.

Grown-ups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practiced ever since. A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away. He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son. A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

One explanation is the law of overlearning, which can be stated as follows: Once we have learned something, additional learning trials increase the length of time we will remember it. In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them. We continue to listen to and remind(提醒)ourselves of words such as "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn. The multiplication tables(乘法口诀表)are another of the things we overlearn in childhood.

The law of overleatning explains why crammingJ(突击学习)for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade, is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course. By cramming, a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned. A little overlearning, on the other hand, is really necessary for oneˈs future development.

The Israeli farmers who pioneered the revolutionary technology known as drip(滴水) irrigation weren’t trying to solve one of the world’s most urgent problems. They were just trying to survive. They lived in the desert, and they didn’t have enough water to grow their crops.

In its simplest formit was little more than a pipe with holes in it.But behind each hole was a hi-tech dripper that let out just theright amount of water. Laid along a row of crops so that the holes were positioned directly above the roots, the pipe could direct each precious drop of water directly to the plants, getting a bigger harvest while using a very small amount of the water.

Over time, the farmers improved upon the technology, perfecting the drippers that regulated the flow of water, and connecting the pipelines to computers that could determine exactly how much water each plant needed and when.

If the global population kept growing, the rest of the world would increasingly resemble their little community in the desert. So they began selling their irrigation systems in other parts of the world, eventually expanding to more than 110 countries.Netafirm, the company says it’s lifting people out of poverty and conserving water at a time when the importance of doing so has never been clearer.

The mass adoption of drip irrigation won’t save the world by itself. To avoid the coming catastrophe, nearly everybody will,in some way, have to do more with less, perhaps through accepting and using other new technologies.Otherwise,it’s going to get ugly.

              Bicycle Safety

Operation Always ride your bike in a safe, controlled manner on campus(校园). Obey rules and regulations. Watch out for walkers and other bicyclists, and always use your lights in dark conditions.

Theft Prevention Always securely lock your bicycle to a bicycle rack---even if you are only away for a minute. Register your bike with the University Department of Public Safety. It’s fast, easy, and free. Registration permanently records your serial number, which is useful in the possible recovery of the bike stolen.

              Equipment

Brakes Make sure that they are in good working order and adjusted properly.

Helmet A necessity, make sure your helmet meets current safety standards and fit properly.

Lights Always have a front headlight---visible at least 500 feet in front of the bike. A taillight is a good idea.

              Rules of the Road

Riding on Campus As a bicycle rider, you have a responsibility to ride only on streets and posted bicycle paths. Riding on sidewalks or other walkways can lead to a fine. The speed limit for bicycles on campus is15mph, unless otherwise posted. Always give the right of ways to walkers. If you are involved in an accident, you are required to offer appropriate aid, call the Department of Public Safety and remain at the scene until the officer lets you go.

Bicycle Parking Only park in areas reserved for bikes. Trees, handrails, hallways, and sign posts are not for bicycle parking, and parking in such posts can result in a fine.

              If Things Go Wrong

If you break the rules, you will be fined. Besides violating rules while riding bicycles on campus, you could be fined for:

              No bicycle registration---------------------------------------------------$25

              Bicycle parking banned--------------------------------------------------$30

              Blocking path with bicycle ---------------------------------------------$40

Many Chinese students who have learnt English for more than ten years are still unable to speak English very well when they meet a foreigner. They seem to have mastered the basic language structure(结构), but a conversation in English will make them feel uneasy. They are afraid that other people might find out their mistakes.

Itˈs uncommon that many students who are bad speakers of English can write English perfectly. This proves that they are unable to organize their idea in English. The center of the problem is that they are short of practice and confidence (自信).

Why should you be afraid? Do you fear those foreigners with whom you are speaking? Donˈt be shy, they will not laugh at you just for a little mistake you make. The best way to get rid of trouble is to learn to speak by speaking more. I am sure that constant practice will help you succeed.
