Dujiangyan is the oldest man-made water system in the world, and a wonder in the development of Chinese science. Built over 2, 200 years ago in what is now Sichuan Province in Southwest China, this amazing engineering achievement is still used today to irrigate over 6, 000 square kilometres of farmland, take away floodwater and provide water for 50 cities in the province.

In ancient times, the region in which Dujiangyan now stands suffered from regular floods caused by overflow from the Minjiang River. To help the victims of the flooding, Li Bing, the region∧ governor, together with his son, decided to find a solution. They studied the problem and discovered that the river most often overflowed when winter snow at the top of the nearby Mount Yulei began to melt as the" weather warmed.

The simplest fix was to build a dam, but this would have ruined the Minjiang River. So instead Li designed a series of channels built at different levels along Mount Yulei that would take away the floodwater while leaving the river flowing naturally. Better still, the extra water could be directed to the dry Chengdu Plain, making it suitable for farming.

Cutting the channels through the hard rock of Mount Yulei was a remarkable accomplishment as it was done long before the invention gunpowder and explosives. Li Bing found another solution. He used a combination of fire and water to heat and cool the rocks until they cracked and could be removed. After eight years of work, the 20-metre-wide canals had been carved through the mountain.

Once the system was finished, no more floods occurred and the people were able to live peacefully and affluently. Today, Dujiangyan is admired by scientists from around the world because of one feature. Unlike modern dams where the water is blocked with a huge wall, Dujiangyan still lets water flow through the Minjiang River naturally, enabling ecosystems and fish populations to exist in harmony.

              (1) What are the benefits of Dujiangyan according to the first paragraph?

              A. Reducing flooding and watering farmland.

              B. Protecting the mountain and reducing flooding.

              C. Watering farmland and improving water quality.

              D. Drying the river and supplying cities with water.

              (2) What was the main cause of the Minjiang River's flooding?

              A. Heavy rains.

              B. Melting snow.

              C. Low river banks.

              D. Steep mountains.

              (3) How was Li Bing able to break through the rocks of Mount Yulei?

              A. By using gunpowder.

              B. By flooding the rocks with water.

              C. By applying a heating and cooling technique.

              D. By breaking the rocks with hammers and spades.

              (4) Why is Dujiangyan greatly admired by scientists today?

              A. It preserves much of the natural river life.

              B. It took very little time to complete the project.

              C. The building techniques used were very modern.

              D. It has raised the living standards of the local people.

President Xi Jinping delivers a policy speech to Chinese and United States’ CEOs during a dinner reception in Seattle, Washington, September 22, 2015.

Beijing and Washington must read each other’s strategic intentions correctly, and have “less estrangement (隔阂,疏远) and suspicion in order to forestall (预先阻止) misunderstanding and miscalculation,” said Chinese President Xi Jinping Tuesday night in his first major policy speech on China-US ties since he arrived in the US early Tuesday.

Xi called for more understanding and trust between the US and China, prior to his formal talks with President Barack Obama at the White House on Friday.

“ China is ready to set up a high-level joint-dialogue mechanism with the United States on fighting cybercrimes,” he said, adding that the Chinese government was a firm defender of cybersecurity while also being a victim of cybercrime. The world’s two largest economies “should strictly base our judgment on fact, for fear that we become victims to hearsay, paranoia, or self-imposed bias”.

Xi made his remarks in a 40-minute speech, the only public speech during his US visit, at a dinner attended by more than 750 business leaders and other dignitaries (显要人物), including former secretary of State Henry Kissinger. It was sponsored by the National Committee on United States-China Relations and the US-China Business Council.

In addition to cybersecurity, Xi raised other issues of concern to some in the US audience, including China’s stock m arket and investment.

Xi said t hat the government had taken necessary steps to stabilize the stock market after recent turbulence (动荡) triggered wide concern. China’s central bank adjusted its currency exchange rate acco rding to market supply and demand in August, which the president said has achieved “initial success” in correcting the currency rate deviation (货币汇率偏差).

Xi also reiterated (重申) China’s opposition to cyber theft, in spite of high tensions between the two countries because the US has blamed several cyber attacks on China recently.

“ China is a strong defender of cybersecurity. It is also a victim of hacking,” Xi said. “The Chinese government will not, in whatever form, engage in commercial thefts or encourage or support such attempts by anyone. Both commercial cyber theft and hacking against government networks are crimes that must be punished in accordance with the law and relevant international treaties.”

Xi also shared the story of his hard and starving youth in a remote village to illustrate what a Chinese dream means for ordinary Chinese people.

Xi arrived at Seattle early Tuesday morning with his wife Peng Liyuan, and was warmly welcomed by Washington state business leaders and officials.

US Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker said that while this week many significant deals will be announced during Xi’s visit, it exemplifies (例证) US companies’ commitment to support China’s development with world-class technology.

Kissinger, who played a major role with opening relations between China and the United States in the 1970’s, said Xi’s state visit is an important step in lifting the two countries’ relationship from the day to day solving of problems to the creating of a new world order.

Xi will take part in a round-table discussion with Chinese and American executives, visit Boeing and Microsoft offices and a local high school before flying to Washington on Thursday morning.

New York Transit Museum: Ghost Station Tour

City Hall Station, an abandoned station of the New York Rapid Transit (运输) subway, was originally the last stop at the southern end of the subway line. Opened in 1904, the station was designed to be the most impressive station of the city’s new subway system.

City Hall Station remained in use until 1945, when the station had to be closed due to certain changes in the city’s subway system. As more and more passengers started to travel by subway, it became necessary to add more cars to subway trains. This meant that subway platforms needed to be extended to fit the longer trains. However, City Hall Station was originally built with a short, bent platform, making improvements to the station difficult. Rather than trying to rebuild it, officials chose to abandon City Hall Station in favor of another nearby station, the Brooklyn Bridge Station. Thus, City Hall became a “ghost” (鬼,幽灵) station on the New York subway line, a modern underground ruin.

Although the station is no longer used by subway travelers, the New York Transit Museum has found a new use for the station. The museum has reopened City Hall Station for tourists. Due to the historic significance and beauty of this station, the New York Transit Museum schedules special tours of the station. With some new features added, the station has been named as a landmark by the U.S. government.

              Tour Information and Reservations

Please make reservations with the Transit Museum from Tuesday to Friday, 10 am to 4 pm. Payment in advance is required for tours and must be received at least one week before the scheduled tour. Payment can be made by credit or check.

Tours may require a lot of walking. Wear good walking shoes and comfortable clothes. For your safety, follow the instructions of the tour guide when touring abandoned stations, stay with the group at all times, and follow instructions or signs at the facilities.

Photography is not permitted inside abandoned facilities and some tours have been restricted since 2001 due to security concerns. Please check before booking.

New York's long-awaited bike share program, which arranged the distribution of 10,000 bicycles along some of the city's busiest streets, will be sponsored by Citi financial group, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced on Monday.

Citi Bike will be the largest public bike share system in the US, with bikes placed in 600 stations in Manhattan and Brooklyn. The program will be operated by Alta bicycle share, which runs similar projects in Washington DC and Boston.

"The idea behind bike share is simple: give people one more way to get around town," Bloomberg said in a statement. "The new Citi Bikes will be an affordable transportation network that will help New Yorkers get where they're going faster. When the walk seems a little far, New Yorkers can choose to skip the hike, and take a bike."

The program was announced in September 2011, and the department of transport has spent the last eight months planning locations for the stations. Full details on the locations have not been released yet, but they will include Times Square, Penn Station and close to Central Park.

Annual membership of the program will cost $95, which entitles (授权) users to free journeys up to 45 minutes. For those unwilling to commit to a year's cycling, seven-day subscriptions are available for $25 or 24-hour access for $9.95, with the first 30 minutes of any journey free. The official website for the program - citibikenyc.com - says the pricing strategy is likely to ensure riders keep their trips short. Although short journeys are free, anyone wanting to take a bike for the day will face very high charges. People who do not sign up to an annual membership - tourists, for example, would pay $49 for a three-hour ride, plus the $9.95 24-hour access fee, making a total of $59.

The department of transport said the. bikes and stations, which will begin to be fixed from "late July", will be the same as in London, Montreal and Minneapolis; however, in one sense Bloomberg will be hoping the New York program differs from that of London. While the London program has ended up losing money since it launched in 2010, the mayor said New York City would "split system profits with the operator", creating a potential new income program.
