When the opportunity arose for me to do some summer traveling, my first urge was to southeast Asia. Being budget-conscious, I eventually decided on Thailand.

I’d been introduced to the country by the well-received 2010 Thai film Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, which sleepily brings out a land in which a dreamy sense of the unknown is so obvious and superstition(迷信) is not only a natural response, but a wise one.

On the warm and rainy island of Phuket, I found the best way to access Thailand’s treasures was by motorbike. I rented one for four days for about 200 RMB and went on a tour guided mainly by fantasy.

The Thailand I saw by motorbike was one where religion is ever-present. Though Buddhism is the country’s official religion, the footprints of other faiths can be found all over. Statues of the Hindu gods Shiva and Ganesha aren’t uncommon in the country’s large number of Buddhist temples, and Muslim places of worship are splendidly equipped in communities in Thailand’s south.

My motorbike allowed me to do more than just see and feel Thailand’s rich cultural heritage, it also allowed me to taste it. Tourism is a leading industry in Thailand, so in top destinations like Chiang Mai, Phuket and Bangkok, there are plenty of restaurants that appeal to international visitors with easy and familiar eats, especially around hotels and hostels. Finding something that tastes truly authentic, fresh prawns cooked in yellow curry and served with spicy beans, for example, is made much easier with a motorbike.

More than anything, my motorbike allowed me to escape the shabby, crowded spaces Thailand is famous for. Deep in the mountains, with the sound of my 125cc engine melting off into the jungle, I found the Thailand I wanted, calm, fascinating and steaming with an ancient temptation.

Thailand is a place thick with mood and myth, and if you’re wiling to walk in, you’ll be rewarded.

Waldseilgarten is an adventure mountain holiday center that offers guests a thrilling night in the wilderness. Nestled at the top of a mountain, daring guests can spend the night hanging off the tree tops, or over a cliff face.

During the warmer months, the center hosts adventure nights out, where guests can sleep in their own portaledge, hanging several meters above the ground. A portaledge is a hanging tent system that is generally used by rock climbers on climbs. At Waldseilgarten, the tents are hung from thick branches of large free-standing trees, where guests can only ascend or descend with rope assistance.

Guests looking for more air and an extreme camping experience can choose to sleep on an overhanging platform, positioned amongst huge cliff faces measuring between 1000 and 2000 meters high. However, if that’s just a little too extreme, the resort also offers easier sleeping options, including cliff platforms between 100 and 300 meters high, or tree platforms between two or four trees, with easy ways to the ground at any time.

All guests partaking in an adventure night out will receive rope climbing training before spending a night in nature. Trained staff teach simple rope climbing techniques, and other useful skills for hiking and rock climbing.

Waldseilgarten seems to offer a camping experience you will definitely remember, however that experience doesn’t come cheap. A night sleeping in the trees in a portaledge will set you back $336 per person, while the cliff face ledges go for $1199. The cheapest option is the tree platforms, at $168 per person per night.

              Visiting Joshua Tree National Park,California

Joshua Tree National Park is nearly 800,000 acres (英亩) large and surrounds parts of the Mojave and Colorado Deserts in South-central California. Although barren at first sight, the park is full of wildlife and provides a variety of entertainment activities from hiking to climbing. Within a three-hour drive, Joshua Tree National Park takes at least a full day to visit.

              Things to do

l Hiking opportunities within the park include several choices, from 12 self-guided nature routines to all-day back-country hikes.

l Joshua Tree NP has nine camping grounds, and back-country camping is also allowed.

l Rock climbing is a popular activity in the park, which has 10 mountains greater than 5, 000 feet in  height.

                 When to visit

Joshua Tree NP is open 365 days a year, although the best time to visit is October through April, when temperature is milder. The peak season is when the wild flowers bloom, and the summer months are the least crowded.

              What to bring

In addition to your camera and telescope, be sure to carry lots of water. Park and guiding maps can be picked up at any of the three visitor centers.

l Parking fees: You can buy a seven-day vehicle permit (周票) for $ 15, a single entry permit for $ 5, or Joshua Tree National Park annual (每年的) pass for $ 60.

l Camping fees: They vary by camping ground

I love New York! On Wednesday we went up the Empire State Building. We stood on the top of it and the view(风景)was fantastic---from the Hudson River across to the East River and the Brooklyn Bridge. It was my turn with the camera and I took lots of photos. From up there the buildings and streets looked like my computer game SHAM CITY!
Aunt Julie is great. Guess what she did in Times Square? We saw a policeman on a horse’s legs. She always has great ideas!
In the evening we met Marsha Henderson and her mother. They’re Aunt Julie’s neighbors. Marsha is nice. She is 12 and looks like Whitney Houston! When I bought a new computer game, she came to the shop with me and helped me.
Yesterday we all went to the Bronx Zoo. It’s a gigantic place and Marsha and I got lost when we tried to find the eagles(鹰). The others wanted to see some boring old sheep or something.

For many years now Thailand has been one of the top tourist destinations in the world. The reason for it is simple: it is the people. Thailand’s nickname is LOS which stands for the “land of smiles” because the vast majority of the people are very friendly and are always smiling. If you have lived all of your life in North America or Europe and have never visited Thailand, you will be very surprised at the difference in the culture on your first visit.

More than likely the first thing you will notice is that virtually in every store or business establishment you visit, you will be greeted with a “Wai”. A “Wai” is a local custom that you might have seen in movies or on TV and consists of a slight bow, with the palms pressed together in a prayer-like fashion. The higher the hands are held in relation to the face and the lower the bow, the more respect or reverence the giver of the “Wai” is showing. The word often spoken with the “Wai” as a greeting is “sawatdee” which means hello.

The vast majority of Thai citizens are Buddhist and you will immediately notice a difference in their attitude as compared with what you are used to at home. They believe everybody should be able to do whatever makes them happy as long as it does not hurt anybody else. In addition, you will find a central principle of their culture is to “get along” and find a way for everybody to “save face” whenever a dispute occurs.

Thai food for the most part is extremely spicy and hot. If you don’t like this type of food, you really need to get your point across when placing your order or you will be at an unforgettable moment once it arrives.
