Many students often say that they don’t have “enough time” to do all their schoolwork. My   (1)  is often brief, “You have as much time as the president.” I usually carry on a bit about   (2)  twenty four hours in the day for everyone, and suggest that “not enough time” is not a(n)  (3)  explanation of  (4)  something done.

                (5)  in graduate school, I tried to prove to one of my professors   (6)  saying that I was working hard. His answer to me was, “That’s irrelevant.  (7)  is important is the  (8)  of your work.”Since then I have had time to think carefully about the trick of “  (9)  ”, and I have come to some   (10)  all relevant to the problem of how much time we have.

If you analyze the matter, you can identify two parts of the problem: There is,   (11)  ,the matter of “time”, which we can think of  (12)  . Then there is the problem of “work” during that time. But, as my professor suggested, it’s not how hard one works  (13)  the quality of the product that’s important.

That led me to a new idea: the quality of the work. That   (14)  is perhaps best explained by a sign I once saw on the wall in someone’s office:“Don’t work harder.  (15)  .”There is a lot of sense in that idea.

If you can’t get more time, and few of us can, the only solution is to improve the quality of the work. That means thinking of ways to get more out of   (16)  time than we might otherwise get. That should lead us to an analysis of our work habits. Since “work” for students usually means“homework”, the expression “work habits” should be read as “  (17)   habits”.

Then, as a smart student, you will  (18)  those skills that you use in study,  (19)  reading and writing. If you learn to read better and write better, there are big benefits that   (20)  in all your studies.

As a general rule, all forms of activity lead to boredom when they are performed on a routine (常规) basis. As a matter of fact, we can see this   (1)   at work in people of all   (2)  . For example, on Christmas morning, children are excited about   (3)   with their new toys. But their   (4)   soon wears off and by January those   (5)   toys can be found put away in the basement. The world is full of   (6)   stamp albums and unfinished models, each standing as a monument to someone's   (7)   interest. When parents bring home a pet, their child   (8)   bathes it and brushes its fur. Within a short time, however, the   (9)   of caring for the animal is handed over to the parents. Adolescents enter high school with great   (10)   but are soon looking forward to   (11)  . The same is true of the young adults going to college. And then, how many  (12)  , who now complain (抱怨) about the long drives to work,   (13)   drove for hours at a time when they first   (14)   their driver's licenses (执照) ? Before people retire, they usually   (15)   to do a lot of   (16)   things, which they never had   (17)   to do while working. But   (18)   after retirement, the golfing, the fishing, the reading and all of the other pastimes become as boring as the jobs they   (19)  . And, like the child in January, they go searching for new   (20)  .

There are two types of people in the world. Although they have equal degrees of health and wealth and the other comforts of life, one becomes happy,   (1)   becomes unhappy. This   (2)   from the different ways in which they consider things, persons, and events, and the resulting effects upon their minds.

The people who are to be happy   (3)   their attention to the conveniences of things, the pleasant parts of conversation, the well-prepared dishes, the goodness of the wines, and the fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the   (4)   things. They are,   (5)  , continually unsatisfied. By their words, they complain about the pleasure of society, offend many people, and   (6)   themselves disagreeable (不受欢迎的) everywhere. If this turn of mind were founded in nature, such unhappy persons would be more to be pitied. The intention of criticizing and being disliked is perhaps taken up   (7)   by imitation (模仿). It grows into a habit, unknown   (8)   its possessors. The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it are   (9)   its bad effects on their interests and tastes. I hope this little warning may be of service to them, and   (10)   them change this habit.

Although in fact it is chiefly an act of imagination, it has serious   (11)   in life, since it causes deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people offend many others, nobody loves them, and no one treats them with more than the most   (12)   politeness and respect. This   (13)   puts them in bad temper and draws them into arguments. If they aim at obtaining   (14)   advantages in social position or fortune, nobody wishes them success. Nor will anyone start a step   (15)   speak a word to favor their hopes. If they cause themselves public objections (反对), no one will   (16)   or excuse them, and many   (17)   join to criticize their wrongdoings. These people should change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing,   (18)   worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not,   (19)   will be good for others to avoid any contact with them. Otherwise, it can be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient,   (20)   when one becomes mixed up in their quarrels.

Time talks. It speaks more plainly than words. Time  __  (1)   in many ways.

Consider the different parts of the day, for example. The time of the day when something is done can give a   __  (2)  __ _  meaning to the event. It is not a  _   (3)  ___  to telephone someone very early in the morning. If you telephone him early in the day,  _  (4)  ___   he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that something is urgent and __  (5)  __   immediate attention.

The same meaning is   _  (6)  _____  telephone calls made after 11:00 pm. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he may think it is a  __  (7)  _____ of life or death. The time chosen for the call  ___  (8)  __   its importance.

But this is not   _  (11)  _____  in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far   (12)  ____  because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be   __  (13)  ___ .

The meaning of time  __  (14)  ___  from place to place in the world. _  (15)  ______, misunderstandings often arise between people from different cultures that __  (16)  ___ _  time differently. For example, promptness (准时) is  __  (17)  ____ greatly in American life. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as  _  (18)  _____  or not fully responsible. In the US, no one would think of keeping a business partner  __  (19)  ____  for an hour; it would be too rude. A person who is five minutes late is ____  (20)  __  to make a short apology.

Accept life as it is. I learned how to do it from my father.  (1)   , he did not teach me acceptance when he was strong and healthy, but rather when he was  (2)    and ill.

My father was   (3)   a strong man who loved being active, but a terrible illness   (4)   all that away. Now he can no longer walk, and he must sit quietly in a chair all day. Even talking is   (5)  . One night, I went to visit him with my sisters. We started   (6)   about life, and I told them about one of my   (7)  . I said that we must very often give things up   (8)   we grow --- our youth, our beauty, our friends --- but it always   (9)   that after we give something up, we gain something new in its place. Then suddenly my father   (10)   up. He said, “But, Peter, I gave up   (11)  ! What did I gain?” I thought and thought, but I couldn’t think of anything to say.  (12)  , he answered his own question: “I   (13)   the love of my family,” I looked at my sisters and saw tears in their eyes, along with hope and thankfulness.

I was also   (14)   by his words. After that, when I began to feel angry at someone, I   (15)  remember his words and become   (16)  . If he could replace his great pain with a feeling of love for others, then I should be  (17)   to give up my small anger. In this   (18)  , I learned the power of acceptance from my father.

Sometimes I   (19)   what other things I could have learned from him if I had listened more carefully when I was a boy. For now I am   (20)   for this one gift.
