The first capsule hotel(胶囊旅馆) which will be opened in Shanghai has attracted many travelers with a little money because of its prices.

The hotel has 68 "capsules", each 1.1-meters high, 1.1-meters wide and 2.2-meters long. The basic price is 28 Yuan ($4.22) per person, plus an additional 4 Yuan an hour. The hotel also offers a package of 88 Yuan for 24 hours.

All of the capsules are from Japan where capsule hotels started, and each is with independent clocks, lights, TV and wireless Internet service. The hotel also has a public lavatory(洗手间),shower room, smoking room and shared guest room.

"This is a huge bargain compared with other hotels in Shanghai," said Ta Zan, the owner of the hotel. Ta used to stay at capsule hotels in Tokyo during his college years and worked at a capsule hotel while he was doing his MBA in Germany in 2005, so he knows how they work and how to make guests feel comfortable.

He learned experience about capsule hotels from Japan but he has made some special changes based on Chinese guestsˈ habits. "In Japan capsule hotels are usually with bathtubs(浴缸), but in China people are more willing to take a shower, so we have the shower room," he said. He has also separated(分隔开) the capsules into three snoring (打鼾的) zones so that guests who often snore wonˈt disturb others. Like most of capsule hotels in Japan, the one in Shanghai is for men only.

But the idea of staying in such a compact space is not attractive to everyone. "I feel the idea is like putting a person in a coffin(棺材), and the price is also not that attractive. A bed at a youth hostel in Shanghai costs about 60 Yuan per night," said Wang Lei, a student from Beijing.

Equipped only with a pair of binoculars (双筒望远镜) and ready to spend long hours waiting in all weathers for a precious glance of a rare bullfinch(红腹灰雀). Britain’s birdwatchers had long been supposed to be lovers of a minority sport. But new figures show birdwatching is fast becoming a popular pastime, with almost three million of us absorbed in our fluttering feathered friends.

Devoted birdwatchers, those prepared to travel thousands of miles for a sighting of a rare Siberian bird, are fast being joined by a new breed of follower whose interest is satiated by watching a few finches (雀科鸣鸟) on a Sunday walk or putting up a bird-box in the back garden.
“Almost three million UK birdwatchers is certainly possible if you include everyone with only a casual interest,” Stephen Moss said in his newly published book—A Bird in the Bush: a Social History of Birdwatching—which records the pursuit from the rich Victorian Englishman’s love of shooting rare birds to the less offensive observational tendencies of birdwatchers today.
Television wildlife programs have helped to fuel the new trend. Last summer, BBC 2’s Britain Goes Wild was a surprise success. It pulled in three million viewers and led to bird-houses selling out across the UK as 45,000 people promised to put up a box.
Birdwatchers’ networking system first came to the attention of the nation in 1989, when a birdwatcher caught sight of the first Vermivora chrysoptera — a golden-winged songbird from North America—to be seen in Britain. He put a message out on the network service Birdline, and next day  3,000 birdwatchers proved the full pull of a truly rare bird as they visited the Tesco car park in Kent, where it had settled. Today, birdwatchers can log on to www.birdline.co.uk or have news of the latest sightings texted to their phones.
“Multimillion-pound spending on binoculars, bird food and boxes point to the increasing numbers of birdwatchers,” said David Cromack, the editor of Bird Watching magazine, “The number of people involved is so big that they have great potential to influence government decisions affecting the environment.”
              (1) The word “satiated” in paragraph 2 can best be replaced by “_______”.
              A. affected B. shared C. satisfied D. narrowed
              (2) What happened after the message of seeing a Vermivora chrysoptera was put on the network?
              A. Birdwatchers helped the rare bird settle in Kent.
              B. Large numbers of birdwatchers went to view the bird.
              C. Many birdwatchers logged on to the website for details.
              D. Birdwatchers showed their determination to protect the rare bird.
              (3) Which of the following CANNOT be true according to the passage?
              A. Television wildlife programs started the popular pastime of birdwatching.
              B. The network service has contributed to the rapid development of birdwatching.
              C. Birdwatching in Britain was long considered a sport with a small group of followers.
              D. The current situation of birdwatching may promote the protection of the environment.
              (4) The passage mainly tells us about ________ in UK.
              A. the history of birdwatching
              B. a growing passion for birdwatching

              C. the impact of media on birdwatching
              D. birdwatching as a popular expensive sport

Nowadays, parents worry a lot because their children spend hours and hours in front of the TV screen. Because this doesn’t happen to only one specific family, many experts warn us that there can be some serious effects of children watching violence on television.

Children who become addicted(上瘾的) to TV sit down and turn on the TV as soon as they get home. Although they have lots of homework, they become absorbed in TV programs.

Since they spend tons of time watching TV,they have less time to enjoy real life activities such as playing with friends, playing outdoor sports,or enjoying other kinds of entertainment.

There are too many violent scenes on TV. Some experts say there are 25 acts of violence per hour on TV. In addition, there are many experiments by psychologists which show how TV violence influences children. Finally, people worry that children tend to imitate what they watch on TV and may start to behave more violently.

What should be done? First of all,the government should regulate TV violence. It should also encourage people to invent and develop new technology which can block violent scenes from the programs children watch. For example, with a rating system(分级制度) and the V-chip,unfit scenes of violence and sex can be blocked out. Second, parents should monitor what their children watch. At the same time, they should make their children interested in real life activities. Then when the children start to spend more time playing with friends or reading books, parents can stop their monitoring.

It is a fact that there is more violence on TV today than there was ten years ago. Moreover, violent incidents occur more frequently in real life. It’s time to realize how harmful watching TV violence is,and it’s time to keep our children from watching violence.

              (1) What experts really worry is that ______.

              A. children spend too much time watching TV

              B. TV violence has a bad influence on children

              C. children become addicted to TV programs

              D. children have less time to do their homework

              (2) The author explain how the government should control TV violence by ______.

              A. giving an example

              B. giving a definition

              C. making a comparison

              D. presenting research findings

              (3) What does the underlined word “imitate” in Paragraph 4 most probably mean? ______

              A. Explain. B. Copy.      C. Ignore. D. Avoid.

              A. To express his own worries about TV violence.

              B. To ask parents to take good care of their children.

              C. To inform readers of the latest situation about TV violence.

              D. To call on the whole society to save children from violence.

How to be a safe and smart searcher

Several keywords will help to find better results

Use more than one keyword when you are doing a search. If you want to find out about seagulls, for example, search for bird seagull and not just “ seagull” — because seagull might also be the name of just about anything else, from a hotel to a documentary film.

              Avoid common words

Don’t use words like ‘a’ or the’ in a search. These aren’t always helpful and are usually unnecessary.

              Remove unwanted results

Adding a minus symbol (-), for example, seagull-hotel-film, would leave out all references to hotels and films.

              Check your spelling

Make sure that you spell every word in the search box correctly. The smallest typing mistakes can bring unwanted results — especially when the mistyped word exists.

              Have a filter(过滤)

It’s a good idea to filter your online searches, especially when you are searching for pictures. Ask an adult to help you add a filtering system. There are lots of filtering software options available.

              Experiment with different search engines

Keep trying until you find the one that’s best for you. Some search engines personalize the results, so check out the choice of using a search engine that doesn’t do this and you will get different results.

Reliability is very important when you are searching on the internet

Always ask yourself, “Is this reliable? Don’t make the mistake of believing everything you see. Some websites are unreliable and some information is false. Check your information on other websites before accepting it.

              (1) Which of the following things should you do as a smart searcher?

              a. Ignore small spelling mistakes.

              b. Choose your search engine carefully.

              d. Use only one keyword in a single search.

              e. Compare information from different sites.

              A. abc
              B. ace
              C. bcd
              D. bce

              (2) According to the article, the minus symbol (-) ______.

              A. bring unwanted results
              B. can make search results more accurate

              C. is likely to give you a long list of results
              D. is usually considered unnecessary in a search

              (3) According to the article, a filtering system ______.

              A. is especially important for picture searches

              B. is useful to find something you’ve already seen

              C. is used to identify false information on a website

When a person lives in a poor family, a growing body of research suggests the limbic (边缘的) system is constantly sending fear and stress messages to the prefrontal cortex (前额皮层), which overloads (使超载) its ability to solve problems, set goals, and complete tasks. The overload can be caused by anything, including an extremely stressful day at work or a family emergency.

It is believed that brain capacity (容量) is relatively fixed. And the science is clear—when brain capacity is used up on these worries and fears, there simply isn’t as much room for other things. Elisabeth Babcock, the president and CEO of EMPath, said poor people tend to get stuck in the cycles where stress leads to bad decision-making, thus causing other problems and bringing about the idea that they can’t improve their own lives. Maybe we can help them earn more money, or establish a sense of control over their own lives.

It’s true that the constant stresses of poverty(贫困) actually changes people’s brains. Race, the Deputy Director of the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University, says children who grow up in and remain in poverty are doubly affected. But the sections of the brain in question are also known to be particularly “plastic”, Race said, which means they can be strengthened and improved well into adulthood.

“It’s going to enable them to understand that they can make a change,” “that things don’t have to be in a certain way if they are not happy.” Poverty can’t help people develop this sense of control over one’s own life, but we can use an understanding of the human brain to bring about lasting change.

              (1) How does stress change the brain according to the first paragraph?

              A. Stress changes the brain by damaging the prefrontal cortex.

              B. Stress is sent to the brain directly and makes people live in poverty.

              C. Stress is sent through the prefrontal cortex and makes it overwork.

              D. Stress changes the brain by sending message to the limbic system.

              (2) What does the underlined phrase “used up” mean ?

              A. To use the brain.
              B. Nothing is used.

              C. Nothing is left.
              D. To increase the capacity.

              (3) What’s Race’s attitude to the changes of the brain by poverty?

              A. The parts of the brain in question will never be improved.

              B. The affected parts of the children’s brains are not changeable.

              C. Children who grow up in poverty will remain in poverty forever.

              D. It is possible for children in poverty to change their brains in question.

              (4) What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4?

              A. People are always unhappy because of their poor condition.

              B. The life of the people in poverty don’t have to be in a fixed way.

              C. Controlling one’s own life is hard but it is rather important to the poor.

              D. People in poverty can make a change by using an understanding of the brain.
