Welcome to the James Joyce Centre

The James Joyce Centre is to promote an understanding of the life and works of James Joyce. In doing so, the Centre tries to work with institutions to celebrate Ireland’s rich cultural heritage (遗产). The James Joyce Centre provides the casual visitor with a rewarding and memorable experience.

The Centre’s home is a restored 18th century townhouse in the north of Dublin, the city of Joyce’s birth and the setting for all his works. From this central place in Joyce’s heartland, the Centre aims to develop an appreciation of this most remarkable and significant literary figure of the 20th century.

No. 35 North Great George’s Street was built in 1784 and decorated with fine plasterwork (灰泥) by Michael Stapleton. The house was restored in the 1980s and opened as the James Joyce Centre in 1996, run by members of Joyce’s sister’s family.

The Kenmare Room is used for lectures and has a small show of reproductions of Joyce family pictures. In addition, this room provides details of Joyce’s life and times, a reading table where visitors can sit and read works by and about Joyce, and a show of some of the many translations of Joyce’s works.

              Exhibitions

The centre’s permanent and temporary exhibitions show various aspects of Joyce’s life and work. Through shows and three films, you may dig into the novel about its historical background and learn more about Joyce’s life. The Centre also hosts International Joyce, an exhibition that provides a wonderful introduction to the life and works of James Joyce.

Where beautiful paintings inspire and enrich life

The National Gallery's purpose is to care for and grow the nation's art collection and make it available for all to enjoy. Every visitor is encouraged to make their own voyage of discovery amongst our rich and diverse collection. It is our hope that it will be an inspirational experience that will enrich lives.

The Gallery provides free adult education and helps tens of thousands of schoolchildren every year to discover and enjoy great paintings. Our programmes extend to people who cannot visit the Gallery itself, including those in distant districts, the elderly, the infirm and patients in hospital. Our temporary exhibitions encourage the investigation of specific areas of the collection and we are noted as a centre for scholarly and scientific research.

The Gallery needs to raise almost half of its annual budget to meet the significant costs of caring for the paintings and their display, maintaining the environment they are kept in and providing a variety of programmes and services for our visitors.

We care for this world-class collection, for today's public and for future generations. Please help us to continue this work.

Stories go all the way from the technical to the romantic, from stage to screen. There will be reports of the stars of the moment, the stars of the future and the stars of the past. The director with his new film, the designer with the latest fashion, and the musician with the popular songs are part of the new Outlook. The program is introduced by Fran Levine.

              9:00 PM----Discovery

When a 10-year-old boy gets a first class degree in mathematics or an 8-year-old boy plays chess like a future grand master, they are considered as geniuses. Where does the quality of genius come from? Is it all in the genes or can any child be turned into a genius? And if parents do have a child who might become a genius in the future, what should they do? In this 30-minute film, Barry Johnson, the professor at School of Medicine, New York University will help you discover the answer.

              10:00 PM----Science& Health

Is it possible to beat high blood pressure without drugs? The answer is “yes”, according to the researchers at Johns Hopkins and three other medical centers. After a study of 800 persons with high blood pressure, they found that after 6 months, those devoted to weight loss, exercise and eating a low-salt, low-fat food lost about 13 pounds and became fitter. Plus, 35% of them dropped into the “normal” category(范畴). This week, Dr. Alan Duckworth will tell you how these people reduce their blood pressure to a level similar to what’s achieved with Hypertension(高血压) drugs.

Experts have put forward detailed plans for a tunnel to join Taiwan with the Chinese mainland.

The shortest proposed route would be 126 kilometers more than twice the length of the English Channel Tunnel. And the longest proposed route would be 207 kilometers.

A recent conference in Xiamen,Fujian Province brought together more than 70 experts. The event was cosponsored(共同赞助) by universities from Taiwan and the Chinese mainland.

Fujian is the province where both proposed routes would begin.

There is direct passenger access between the mainland and Taiwan by air or sea at the moment.

Experts say that it is better to start research sooner rather than later, although there is a lack of government funding. There are no technical problems to build a Taiwan tunnel. But it will require an improved political relationship across the Straits(海峡).

A professor of Tsinghua University said,“A special feature of huge projects is that the period of preparation is longer than the period of construction.”

“For example,” he said,“the English Channel Tunnel took 14 years of planning and had been discussed for two centuries. And preparations for the huge Three Gorges(三峡) dam on the Yangtze River began in the 1950s.”

The Xiamen conference focused on the longest southern route, which would pass Jinmen and Penghu.

The first stage of the new project could be a bridge to cross the five kilometres between Xiamen and Jinmen. This would mean that traveling from Xiamen to Jinmen by car would only take five minutes.

The longest tunnel now being planned anywhere in the world is the 54kilometre land tunnel to link Lyon in France with Turin in Italy. The tunnel will not be completed until 2015—2020.
