TIANJIN, Feb. 6 - The computer viruses known as "Kompu" and "Happytime" will attack China next week, but damage will be limited, predicted the Tianjin-based National Computer Virus Emergency Response Center on Sunday.

The center - the only anti-virus products testing and certification center authorized by the Chinese Ministry of Public Security - raised the alert about the two viruses, which are expected to hit the country from Feb. 6 to 12.

The experts explained that the Wm_Kumpu virus originated in Estonia and appears on the computer screens with the messages "Mul on paha tuju!" and "Tahan kommi", which mean "I am in bad mood" and "Give me some candy".

The Vbs_Happytime, a virus in e-mail attachments, can eliminate.exe and .dll files in the computer hard disks.

Experts warned computer users who may log on to the Internet to receive mail or visit Internet chat rooms when they finish the week-long Spring Festival vacation and return to work on Monday.

The center advised computer system maintenance technicians to scrutinize their systems and upgrade anti-viral software as precautions against the viruses, before the routine working week starts on Monday.

Experts with the center said that there is no need to immediately format computer hard drives stricken with the viruses, since the viruses can not possibly damage all data on the hard disk in a short period of time. Computer users can use software and tools to restore the lost data.

Terrafugia Inc. said Monday that its new flying car has completed its first flight, bringing the company closer to its goal of selling the flying car within the next year. The vehicle—named the Transition—has two seats, four wheels and wings that fold up so it can be driven like a car. The Transition, which flew at 1,400 feet for eight minutes last month, can reach around 70 miles per hour on the road and 115 in the air. It flies using a 23-gallon tank of gas and burns 5 gallons per hour in the air. On the ground, it gets 35 miles per gallon.

Around 100 people have already put down a $10,000 deposit to get a Transition when they go on sale, and those numbers will likely rise after Terrafugia introduces the Transition to the public later this week at the New York Auto Show. But don’t expect it to show up in too many driveways. It’s expected to cost $279,000. And it won’t help if you’re stuck in traffic. The car needs a runway.

Inventors have been trying to make flying cars since the 1930s, according to Robert Mann, an airline industry expert. But Mann thinks Terrafugia has come closer than anyone to making the flying car a reality. The government has already permitted the company to use special materials to make it easier for the vehicle to fly. The Transition is now going through crash tests to make sure it meets federal safety standards.

Mann said Terrafugia was helped by the Federal Aviation Administration’s decision five years ago to create a separate set of standards for light sport aircraft, which are lower than those for pilots of larger planes. Terrafugia says an owner would need to pass a test and complete 20 hours of flying time to be able to fly the Transition, a requirement pilots would find relatively easy to meet.

              (1) What is the first paragraph mainly about?

              A. The basic data of the Transition.
              B. The advantages of flying cars.

              C. The potential market for flying cars.
              D. The designers of the Transition.

              (2) Why is the Transition unlikely to show up in too many driveways?

              A. It causes traffic jams.
              B. It is difficult to operate.

              C. It is very expensive.
              D. It burns too much fuel.

              A. Cautious. B. Favorable.

LONDON (AP)—A suburban house that starred onscreen as Harry Potter’s childhood home is on the market—complete with a cupboard under the stairs.

Fans of the boy wizard will recognize 12 Picket Post Close as 4 Privet Drive, home of Harry’s cruel aunt and uncle, the Dursleys.

The couple unwillingly took Harry in after his parents were murdered and made him sleep in a cupboard under the stairs.

The house in Bracknell, 30 miles (50 kilometers) west of London, was a location featured in the 2001 film Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. A studio set of the house was built for later films of the eight series.

But since news of the connection got out, interest has shot up, and that may or may not influence the final price that we achieve at this property.”

Neighbor Karen Field said that the house still attracts Potter fans a decade-and-a-half-after the film crews left.                 Shawn Seipler is on a mission to save lives with soap. The non-profit organization, now called Clean the World, has since grown to include industrial recycling facilities in Las Vegas, Orlando and Hong Kong, cities where hotels are plentiful and used bars of soap can be gathered easily by the thousands.

As a frequent traveller while working for a tech company, Seipler had a thought one night at a Minneapolis hotel. “I picked up the phone and called the front desk and asked them what happens to the bar of soap when I’m done using it,” he recalled. “They said they just threw it away.” Seipler, now the group’s CEO, said that after some research he discovered that millions of used bars of soap from hotels worldwide are sent to landfills every day while many people in developing nations are dying from illnesses that could potentially be prevented if they only had access to simple hygiene products. Thus began his mission to help save lives with soap.

Clean the World this week announced it was partnering with the similar Global Soap organization to increase production, hygiene education and delivery. The combined group now collects used soap from more than 4,000 hotels and says it has delivered some 25 million bars to 99 countries, including homeless shelters in the US. The process is fairly simple with the collected soap being shredded then run through machines that remove any residual bacteria before being pressed into new bars of soap and packaged for delivery.

The group uses local aid and non-governmental organisations to help with distribution and ongoing education, along with sending their own teams into rural communities around the world to personally hand-deliver hygiene products and to teach residents about the importance of keeping clean.

“A lot of people are surprised to find out that one of the most effective ways to prevent many deaths is actually just hand-washing with soap,” said Global Soap’s director Sam Stephens. “We’re hoping to make a difference.”
