A cheerful taxi driver says, "No problem. Map sellers are everywhere!" When the taxi stops, a fellow (2) with a thin folded sheet and says: "Ten dollars."
Ten dollars! With absolute (3) , I inform him, "That"s too much." The map man leaves. I begin walking, certain I"ll find a (an) (4) star map soon.
I am (5) . There"s hardly anybody on the street. There don"t seem to be many real stores, just cars and bars. No maps. No stars. Blocks pass. The sun begins to sink. At the edge of West Hollywood, (6) fellow wanders ahead, selling star maps to some teenage girls.
Ten dollars (7) . Forget it. My son will (8)
That night, I call my wife. "Did you get one of those maps to the stars? He"s been talking about (9) else."
This (10) is hard to ignore. It"s late. At all-night markets: no maps. I head back to the hotel. Morning is coming. There will be one last (11) . After I check out, I take a taxi. But at nine in the morning, map sellers are (12) to be found.
"You know," says the driver, "The guys with the maps just aren"t up yet!" He"s right.
"Forget it. Let"s go to the airport."
"Well," says the driver, "I could (13) you one if you like."
Sure. Trust this guy? I might as well throw cash onto the freeway. But exiting the taxi, I (14) my last chance. I hand him ﹩13 and my business card. Three weeks pass. I"ve (15) on the star map. My son has stopped mentioning it.
Then one afternoon, sticking out from under piles of flyers, there it is: a big white envelope. There is a small note. I can hardly read it, (16) I make out a few phrases - "forgive (17) ," "taxi"s been down" and, finally, "here"s map for your son." There"s no return address. It"s signed, "kind regards, M."
I hold the note in my hand, (18) what my son said to me when I got back from Los Angeles.
"Did you meet any (19) , Dad?" he asked.
Now I know what to tell him.
              "Yes, I did. I met a guy named M."
If you never (20) anybody, you"ll never find the good guys.

When your child is supposed to be doing homework, are they chatting with their friends on Facebook or playing games? Many studies have shown that multitasking doesn’t   (1)  ,   (2)   your child is probably proudly claiming they can do ten things   (3)  ! Many people believe that they can   (4)   two or more tasks at the same time, but Dr. Edward Hallowell says this is   (5)  . The reality is that multitasking   (6)   poor job performance.

I have never understood the importance of parties in the classroom. As a mother of two school age children, I believe that public schools should no longer   (1)   classroom parties during the school day.

                (2)   is very important to students in school today. Our school year is already too short. Teachers can only just get all the basics of the courses (课程) into the   (3)   instructional minutes of the day.   (4)  , there is no time for anything useless or silly.   (5)   time is best spent focusing on the primary goal — learning.

And what about food? For health and safety reasons, schools often require that   (6)   for these activities should be bought from a store. This   (7)   a real problem for many families. Biscuits for a class of students, plus drinks and napkins can   (8)  what it costs a family to eat a meal at home. The   (9)  of a classroom party is   (10)   a problem for many people, especially in these difficult times.   (11)  , we all know that our children have eaten enough sugar and junk food without the school   (12)   such unhealthy choices.

All the   (13)   that a party can create is unacceptable! I   (14)   those birthday parties held at home for my children. I would just buy the disposable (一次性的) plates, cups, and napkins   (15)   I didn’t need to do any cleaning up. But even so, I just   (16)   to fit all the party time rubbish into the rubbish bin (垃圾桶).   (17)  the trash thrown out by a school of 16 classrooms and over 400 students. It only adds to the   (18)   of our planet’s environment.

I am not sure when our public schools decided that classroom   (19)  needed to become a part of the school calendar (日历), but I do not see the   (20)  . So I do believe schools should forbid (禁止) classroom celebrations.

One important event during the pre-Christmas rush at our house was the arrival of mydaughter’s kindergarten report card. She got high __(1)__ for her reading, vocabulary and overall enthusiasm. On the other hand,we learnt that she has work to do on her numbers and computer skills, __   (1)   __ her report is absent of any words that might be interpreted(解读) as __   (2)   __.A number system __(4)__ how she’s measuring up in each area without any mention of passing or failing, all of which seems to make my daughter’s school neither fish nor fowl(不伦不类).
The benefits are often __   (3)   _when it comes to giving formal __   (4)   _ to kids. At one level, the advantages and disadvantages are obvious. A grade system provides a straightforward standard by which to measure how your child is __   (5)   __ at school and how they are __   (6)   __ compared to other children. __   (7)   __ as writer Sue Ferguson notes, "Grades can deceive.(欺骗)" The __   (8)   _ should be "to measure learning, not simply what a student can remember on a test."
If you’re old enough, you’ve lived through this debate before. At one time, it was considered unfair to put children in _   (9)   _competition with one another if it could be avoided. The _   (10)   _ behind that may have been good, but it _   (11)   _ the fact that competition, and the willto come out on top, are   (12)  parts of the human condition.
This time around, educators working with a no-grades __   (13)   _ are emphasizing(强调) different reasons. The thing is that the method is much more common in the adult workplace than in the traditional pass-fail system we place on our children. Many workplaces __   (14)   __ regular employee evaluations. There are usually fairly strict _   (15)   _ to what an employer can tell an employee in those evaluations. And even then, negative evaluations can be __   (16)   _ by the employee. No matter where you stand in the debate _   (17)  the grade system, then, the real question is this: if it’s so good for kids, why isnˈt that also _   (18)   _ for adults?

My mom is a crazy aviation (航空) (6) , so she always (7) me to air shows when I was younger. We"d watch the Thunderbirds or Blue Angels, and I"d get the pilots" autographs (签名). With her (8) , I started taking lessons after I turned 12. Friends would ask me to (9) out, and I"d say, "Sorry, I have a flight"-they"d look at me (10) I had four heads. But the air felt like where I was (11) to be.
Flying is (12) for many reasons: the (13) you can see only from above, visiting incredible places. But to me, one of the coolest things is being (14) the plane - the liberation of holding the controls. I plan to (15) the big jets as an airline transport pilot, which (16) doing lots of ground training, banking 1,500 hours of flight time, and (17) a bunch of certificates and ratings.
On my first plane (18) , when I was 4, the flight attendants gave me a little pin with wings. We took a picture of me in the cockpit(驾驶员座舱) next to (19) . Who would"ve (20) that someday I"d be sitting in his seat?

But we people aren"t (7) only with the window. So we open all our (8) for you. Is this a(n) (9) or some kind of attachment? If this is an illness, is it curable? And if this is an attachment will you (10) me to the lifelong togetherness?

Through several summers of volunteer work at an Ethiopia orphanage,Nubia learned firsthand the severe poverty so many children (3) .In an email to The Huffington Post,Nubia said that she was (4) struck by the children"s lack of access to (5) -their school only went through the fourth grade.
Over the course of her volunteer work,Nubia became interested in one (6) ,Hermela. She writes:
Out of the many students in the kindergarten class,Hermela became (7) and attached to me to a point where it was becoming (8) for both of us to leave each other. She is now in the second grade. The thought of Hermela not being able to have her meal and (9) education after the fourth grade became (10) and I knew I had to do something.
That"s when Nubia decided that she didn"t want a traditional Sweet 16. (11) ,she wanted to use the money her parents would have spent on a party to establish (12) grade class for Hermela and other kids.
"The money could provide a(n) (13) solution that will serve for many years compared to the one-day (14) of my party,"Nubia wrote to Huffpost Live.In short,I want Hermela to continue (15) ."
After telling friends and family her (16) ,Nubia set up a(n) (17) page"Keep Hermela Smiling"on CrowdRise. Her (18) will raise funds for the Fregenet Foundation, which funds education and community services in Ethiopia.
So far,Nubia has (19) $2,781 of her$10,000 goal.Nubia says that her parents have been extremely (20) ; they"re selling most of their Ethiopian artifacts to help raise funds.
              Nubia"s birthday may not have been a party,but it"s truly a celebration.

I used to believe in the American Dream, which meant a job, a mortgage (按揭), credit cards, success, I wanted it and worked toward it like everyone else, all of us   46   chasing the same thing.

One year, through a series of unhappy events, it all fell   47  . I found myself homeless and alone. I had my truck and $56. I   48   the countryside for some place I could rent for the   49   possible amount. I came upon a shabby house four miles up a winding mountain road   50   the Potomac River in West Virginia. It was  51  , full of broken glass and rubbish. I found the owner, rented it, and   52   a corner to camp in.

The locals knew nothing about me,   53   slowly, they started teaching me the   44   of  being a neighbor. They dropped off blankets, candles, and tools, and began   55   around to chat. They started to teach me a belief in a   56   American Dream — not the one of individual achievement but of   57  .

What I had believe in, all those things I thought were   58   for a civilized life, were nonexistent in this place.   59   on the mountain, my most valuable passions were my   60   with my neighbors.

Four years later, I moved back into   61  . I saw many people were having a really hard time,   62   their jobs and homes. I managed to rent a big enough house to   63   a handful of people. There are four of us now in the house, but over time I’ve had nine people come in and move on to other places. We’d all be in   64    if we hadn’t handed together.

The American Dream I believe in now is a shared one. It’s not so much about what I can get for myself; it’s about   65   we can all get by together.
