Where beautiful paintings inspire and enrich life

The National Gallery's purpose is to care for and grow the nation's art collection and make it available for all to enjoy. Every visitor is encouraged to make their own voyage of discovery amongst our rich and diverse collection. It is our hope that it will be an inspirational experience that will enrich lives.

The Gallery provides free adult education and helps tens of thousands of schoolchildren every year to discover and enjoy great paintings. Our programmes extend to people who cannot visit the Gallery itself, including those in distant districts, the elderly, the infirm and patients in hospital. Our temporary exhibitions encourage the investigation of specific areas of the collection and we are noted as a centre for scholarly and scientific research.

The Gallery needs to raise almost half of its annual budget to meet the significant costs of caring for the paintings and their display, maintaining the environment they are kept in and providing a variety of programmes and services for our visitors.

We care for this world-class collection, for today's public and for future generations. Please help us to continue this work.

Where does the quality of genius come from? Is it all in the genes or can any child be turned into a genius? And if parents do have a child who might become a genius in the future, what should they do? In this 30-minute film, Barry Johnson, the professor at School of Medicine, New York University will help you discover the answer.

              10:00 PM----Science& Health

Is it possible to beat high blood pressure without drugs? The answer is “yes”, according to the researchers at Johns Hopkins and three other medical centers. After a study of 800 persons with high blood pressure, they found that after 6 months, those devoted to weight loss, exercise and eating a low-salt, low-fat food lost about 13 pounds and became fitter. Plus, 35% of them dropped into the “normal” category(范畴). This week, Dr. Alan Duckworth will tell you how these people reduce their blood pressure to a level similar to what’s achieved with Hypertension(高血压) drugs.

            • 4. Forty years ago,I was an instructor in the military (军事) school,when young Scoresby was given his first examination.I felt extremely sorry for him.Everybody answered the questions intelligently,while he didn’t know anything.He was a nice,pleasant young man.It was painful to see him stand there giving stupid answers.
I knew when examined again he would be thrown out.So I tested him and worked him like a slave.I made him work over and over again on a few questions which I knew he would be asked.He came through very well on the day of the examination.By some strange,lucky accident,he was asked no questions except those I made him study.
I thought the end that would destroy him would be the mathematics examination.I decided to make his end as painless as possible.So,I pushed facts into his stupid head for hours.Finally,I let him go to the examination to experience what I was sure would be his dismissal (开除) from school.But the result shocked me out of my mind.He took first prize!And he got the highest praise.I felt guilty--what I was doing was not right.But I only wanted to make his dismissal less painful for him.I never dreamed it would lead to such strange,laughable results.
Then,the war broke out.I felt sad for him that there had to be a war.Peace would have given this donkey a chance to escape from being found out so stupid.I waited for the worst to happen.It did.He was appointed a captain!
I thought I was responsible to the country for this.I must go with him and protect the nation against him.So,I joined up with him.And away we went to the field.
And there--oh,it was terrible.Mistakes,fearful mistakes--he never did anything right--nothing but mistakes.But nobody knew how stupid he really was.And what kept me in a continual fear was that every mistake he made increased his glory and fame.
He continued to climb up,over the dead bodies of his superiors (上级).Then,in the hottest moment of one battle down went our colonel (上校).My heart jumped into my mouth,for Scoresby took his place.The battle grew hotter.The English troops were falling back all over the field.Our regiment (团) occupied an extremely important position.One mistake now would bring total disaster.What did Scoresby do?He just mistook his left hand for his right hand.An order came for him to fall back and support our right.Instead,he moved forward and went over the hill to the left.We were over the hill before this mad movement could be discovered and stopped.And what did we find?A large Russian army waiting!And what happened?Were we all killed?That is exactly what would have happened in ninety-nine cases out of a hundred.But no--those surprised Russians thought we must be the whole British army,instead of only one regiment.They turned and escaped.Away they went over the hill and down into the field in wild disorder.We ran after them.In no time,there was the greatest turn-around ever seen.The British turned defeat into a sweeping and shining victory.
The commander looked on,with wonder,surprise and joy.He sent for Scoresby,and hugged him on the field in front of all the armies.Scoresby became famous that day as a great military leader,honored throughout the world.That honor will never disappear while history books last.

            • 5. It’s such a happy-looking library, painted yellow, decorated with palm-tree stickers and sheltered from the Florida sun by its own roof.About the size of a microwave oven,it’s pedestrian-friendly,too,waiting for book lovers next to a sidewalk in Palm Beach country Estates, along the northern boundary of Palm Beach Gardens.
It’s a library built with love.
A year ago, shortly after Janey Henriksen saw a Brian Williams report about the Little Free Library organization,a Wisconsin-based nonprofit that aims to promote literacy and build a sense of community in a neighborhood by making books freely available, she announced to her family of four,“That’s what we’re going to do for our spring break!”
Son Austin, now a 10th-grader,didn’t see the point of building a library that resembles a mailbox. But Janey insisted, and husband Peter unwillingly got to work. The 51-year-old owner of a ship supply company modified a small wooden house that he’d built years earlier for daughter Abbie’s toy horses, and made a door of glass.
After adding the library’s final touches (装点),the family hung a signboard on the front, instructing users to“take a book, return a book,”and making the Henriksen library, now one of several hundred like it nationwide and among more than 2,500 in the world, the only Little Free Library in Palm Beach County.
They stocked it with 20 or so books they’d already read,a mix of science fiction, reference titles, novels and kids’favorites.“I told them, keep in mind that you might not see it again,”said Janey,a stay-at-home mom.
Since then, the collection keeps replenishing (补充) itself, thanks to ongoing donations from borrowers. The library now gets an average of five visits a day.
The project’s best payoff, says Peter, are the thank-you notes left behind.“We had no idea in the beginning that it would be so popular.”(317 words)
66.In what way is the library“pedestrian-friendly”?

C.It aimed at making the library last long.

Shay asked,“Do you think they’ll let me play?”Shay’s father knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their team,but the father also understood that if his son,mentally and physically disabled,were allowed to play,it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence.
Shay’s father approached one of the boys on the field and asked if Shay could play,not expecting much.The boy looked around and said,“We’re losing by six runs (分) and the game is in the eighth inning (局).I guess he can be on our team and we’ll try to put him in to bat in the final inning.
Shay struggled over to the team’s bench and put on a team shirt with a broad smile and his father had a small tear in his eye and warmth in heart.The boys saw the father’s joy at his son being accepted.
In the bottom of the eighth inning,Shay’s team scored a few runs but was still behind by three.In the top of the final inning,Shay put on a glove and played in the field.Even though no hits came his way,he was obviously joyful just to be in the game and on the field.In the bottom of the final inning,Shay’s team scored again.Now,Shay was scheduled to be next at bat.Would they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the game?
Surprisingly,Shay was given the bat.Everyone knew that a hit was almost impossible.The first pitch (投) came and Shay missed.The pitcher again again took a few steps forward to throw the ball softly towards Shay.As the pitch came in,Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher.
The pitcher could have easily thrown he ball to the first baseman and Shay would have been out and that would have been the end of the game.Instead,the pitcher threw the ball right over the head of  the first baseman,beyond the reach of all teammates,The audience and the players from both teams started screaming,“Shay,run to first!”Never in his life had Shay ever run that far but made it to first base,wide-eyed and shocked..
Everyone  should,“Run  to  second!”Catching his breath,Shay awkwardly ran towards second.By the time Shay rounded towards second base,the smallest guy on their team,who had a chance to be the hero for his team fir the first time,could have thrown the ball to the second baseman,but he understood the pitcher’s intentions and he too  intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third baseman’s head.
All were screaming,“Shay,Shay,Shay,all the way Shay.”Shay reached third base when one opposing player ran to help him and shouted,“Shay,run to third.”As Shay rounded third,all were on their feet,crying,“Shay,run home!”Shay ran to home,stepped on the home base and was cheered as the hero who the who won the game for his team.
That day, the boys from both teams helped bring a piece true love and humanity into this world.Shay didn’t make it to another summer and died that winter, having never forgotten being the hero and making his father so happy and coming home and seeing his mother tearfully hug her little hero of the day!

66.Not expecting much,Shay’s father still asked the boy if Shay could play,mainly because the father

B.would like to help Shay enjoy the game
C.found Shay was so eager to be a winner
D.fell forced to give Shay another chance
68.The smallest boy threw the ball high and far over the third baseman’s head,probably because that boy
A.was obviously aware of the pitcher’s purpose
B.looked forward to winning the game for his team
C.failed to throw the ball to the second baseman
D.saw that Shay already reached second base

A.The pitcher did not throw the ball to the first baseman.

A thief who dropped a winning lottery ticket (彩票) at the scene of his crime has been given a lesson in
honesty. His victim (受害者), who picked up the £25,000 prize, managed to trace him, and handed over the
cash. The robbery happened when maths professor Vinicio Sabbatucci, 58, was changing a tyre on an Italian
motorway. Another motorist, who stopped "to help", stole a suitcase from his car and drove off. The professor
found the dropped ticket and put it in his pocket before driving home to Ascoli in eastern Italy.
Next day, he saw the lottery results on TV and, taking out the ticket, realized it was a winner. He claimed
the 60 million lire (里拉) prize. Then he began a battle with his conscience. Finally, he decided he could not
keep the money despite having been robbed. He advertised in newspapers and on radio, saying:"I'm trying to
find the man who robbed me. I have 60 million lire for him―a lottery win. Please meet me. Anonymity (匿名)
              guaranteed." (保证)
Professor Sabbatucci received hundreds of calls from people hoping to trick him into handing them the
cash. But there was one voice he recognized―and he arranged to meet the man in a park. The robber,
a 35-year-old unemployed father of two children, gave back the suitcase and burst into tears. He could not
believe what was happening. "Why didn't you keep the money?" he asked. The professor replied:"I couldn't,
because it's not mine." Then he walked off, spurning the thief's offer of a reward.

              2. The word "spurning" in the last sentence can be replaced by _____.

The journey two divers made some time ago to the deepest point on the earth makes us realize how
much of the world still remains to be studied. The two men went down seven miles to the bottom of the
Pacific Ocean inside a small steel ball to find out if there are any ocean currents (水流) or signs of life.
It was necessary to set out early, so that the ball would come to the surface in daylight, and be easily
found by the mother ship which would be waiting for it. The divers began preparations early in the morning
and soon afterwards, when all was ready, the steel ball disappeared under the surface of the water.
The divers felt as if they were going down steps as they passed through warm and cold layers (层) of
water. In time the temperature dropped to the freezing point. They kept in touch with the mother ship by
telephone telling how they felt. Then, at a depth of 3,000 feet, the telephone stopped working and they were
quite cut off from the outside world. All went well until some four hours later at 30,000 feet, the men were
frightened by a loud, cracking noise. Even the smallest hole in the ball would have meant instant death. Luckily,
though, it was only one of the outer windows that had broken. Soon afterwards, the ball touched the soft
ocean floor raising a big cloud of "dust" made up of small dead sea creatures. Here, powerful lights lit up the
dark water and the men were surprised to see fish swimming just above them quite untroubled by the great
water pressure. But they did not dare to leave the lights on for long, as the heat from them made the water
boil. Quite unexpectedly, the telephone began working again and the faint but clear voices of the divers were
heard on the mother ship seven miles away. After a stay of thirty minutes the men began their journey up,
arriving three hours later, cold and wet through, but none was worse for their experience.
              1. The purpose of the divers' journey to the deepest point on the earth was to find _____.

              C. stopped working at a depth of 3,000 feet and began working again at 30,000 feet
              D. stopped working at a depth of 3,000 feet and began working again when they returned to the same depth
              4. On the ocean floor, the divers found that _____.
              [     ]

              A. there was no life but some small dead sea creatures

Once an Englishman named Jack Brown went to Russia for a holiday. He stayed there for several months
and then came home again. Some of his friends visited him a few days after he got back. "I had a very
dangerous trip while I was in Russia," Jack said to them. "I wanted to see a friend of mine in the country and
the bad weather made me very late. So I was still traveling through a forest in a sleigh (雪橇) when the sun
went down. It was a long way from my friend's house when about twenty wolves began to follow my sleigh.
It was very dark in the forest. There was thick snow on the ground. It was cold, and there were no houses
for miles and miles. First I heard the wolves. The noise was terrible! The horses heard them, too. They were
frightened and began running faster. Then I saw long, gray forms among the trees, and soon the wolves were
near us. They were running very fast, and they didn't seem to get tired like the horses."
"What did you do?" one of Jack's friends asked.
"When the wolves got very near," Jack answered, "I put up my gun and shot the first wolf. The sleigh
was moving about, but I hit the animal and killed it. Then all the other wolves stopped and ate it, so our sleigh
got away from them for a few minutes."
"Then they finish their meal, and I heard them coming again. The moon was shining brightly on the snow
now, and after a few minutes I saw them running among the trees once more. They came nearer again, and
then I shot another of them, and the others stopped once more to eat it."
"The same thing happened again and again, and my horses became more and more tired and ran slower
and slower until, after about two hours, only one wolf was still alive and following us."
"Wasn't it too fat to run?" one of his friends asked.
              1. Jack told his friends what happened to him when he was _____.
              [     ]

              A. in England one winter evening

              D. in Russia one winter morning
              2. In the sentence:"They finish their meal", "meal" here means "_____".

              A. the food Jack had brought with him
              B. the meal prepared by Jack's friend
              C. the wolf which had been killed by Jack
              D. the dead animals on the way
