I do voluntary work for an organization that helps the people in need in Haiti. Recently I took my son Barrett there for a week, hoping to   (1)   him.

Before setting out, I told Barrett this trip would be tiring and   (2)  . For the first two days, he said almost nothing. I worried the trip was too   (3)   for a 17-year-old. Then on day three, as we were   (4)   over high rocky mountains, he turned to me and grinned(咧嘴笑),“Pretty hard.”

After that there was no turning back. A five-year-old girl, wearing a dress several sizes   (5)   large and broken shoes, followed Barrett around, mesmerized(着迷). He couldn’t stop   (6)  . Later he said   (7)  . “I wish I could speak French.” I was   (8)  -this from a boy who hated and   (9)   French classes throughout school.

Usually silent, he   (10)   Gaby, our host, and kept asking questions about the country and its people. He blossomed(活泼起来).

                (11)   , the moment that really took   (12)   breath away occurred in a village deep in the mountains. I was   (13)   a woman villager for an article. 135 centimeters tall, she was small in figure but strong in   (14)  . Through determination, she had learned to read and write and   (15)   to become part of the leadership of the   (16)  .

Learning her story, Barrett was as   (17)   as I by this tiny woman’s achievements. His eyes were wet and there was a   (18)   of love and respect on his face. He had finally understood the importance of my work.

When leaving for home, Barrett even offered to stay   (19)   as a volunteer. My insides suddenly felt struck. This   (20)   achieved all I’d expected. Soon he will celebrate his 18th birthday. He’ll be a man.

Yesterday I was shopping with my 5-year old daughter   (1)   a group of punk rockers walked by with orange spiked hair and tattoos (纹身)  (2)   much of their bodies. At the sight of them, my daughter immediately asked me, “Daddy, why are they   (3)   like that?” Years ago I would have felt very   (4)   with such young people. I would have given a judgmental explanation and passed along to her my   (5)  . However, that day I said to my daughter, “I’m not really sure, but it’s interesting how   (6)   we all are, isn’t it?” She said, “Yeah,   (7)   I like my own hair.”
Actually, I was pretending to be an anthropologist. Anthropology(人类学)is a science which deals with man and his social habits. I think of anthropology here as “being interested, without   (8)   , in the way other people choose to live and   (9)   .” When you are curious about the way someone behaves or the way they feel about something, it’s   (10)   that you will be annoyed.
When someone acts in a way that seems   (11)   to you, rather than react in your usual way, such as “ I can’t believe they would do that, ”   (12)   say something to yourself like “ I see, that must be the way they   (13)   things in their world. Very interesting. ” In order for this   (14)   to help you, you have to be genuine as I tried that day. I   (15)   my perspective from the bottom of my heart. And that made me   (16)   .
When you are interested in other perspectives, it doesn’t mean you’re   (17)   them. I certainly wouldn’t choose a punk rock lifestyle or   (18)   it to anyone else. At the same time, however, it’s really not my   (19)   to judge it either. One of the most important rules of joyful living is that judging others takes a great deal of energy and   (20)   you away from where you want to be.

One day I was riding on a crowded bus downtown to go to work when it rained suddenly. The windows of the bus were soon     (1)  and we couldn’t see the outside. Everyone was in low spirits. I was sitting next to a man in a business suit and I paid little attention     (2)     we both got off at the same stop and walked to the same news-stand(报刊亭) to get a morning     (3)  .

The man     (4)  the stand was obviously having a bad day. He was     (5)  and unsmiling as we bought our papers, which only     (6)  more gloom (郁闷) to my day. The businessman     (7)  my eyes and smiled brightly,     (8)  the news-stand owner for the paper and for being open on such a morning to     (9)  we were able to get our papers.

As we went away, I asked this man why he was so     (10)  to the newsman when he didn’t respond to his     (11)  of thanks and friendliness. The businessman smiled at me and said, “Why would I let someone else    (12)  what I say and what I feel?”

We then     (13)  to go to our own work places. To this day, I still don’t know who that businessman was, or where he worked.     (14)  , I know nothing about him. He appeared briefly in my life and disappeared just as     (15)  . But I’ve never forgotten the words he said and his     (16)  which seemed like a ray of light on a gloomy day.

That was a good 25 years     (17)  , but the effect this had on my life has lasted. I have learnt that we cannot control people and     (18)  we are in, but we can always control our     (19)  to them. That is, it is within our control and our     (20)  to make such positive decisions and thus to make a positive difference.

My husband and I insisted that our children were old enough to clean their rooms and make their beds. But they thought   (1)  . My complaints, ever shouting, were always landing on  (2)  ears. Very often, my attempts to motivate them were   (3)   . Apparently, I needed to  (4)  my method of “mothering”.

One day when they were at school, I spent some time  (5)  their rooms. On their desks, in simple  (6)   , I left the cards: “Dear Bill and Sarah, your room was messy this morning and I’m sure you like it clean. Love, the Room Fairy(仙女).”   (7)    arriving back, the children were more than excited to receive the little note from the Room Fairy. The next day, their rooms were   (8)   tidy. Sure enough, there was another note from the Room Fairy  (9)   for them, thanking them for their nice “gift” of a clean room and   (10)   asking them to play a certain violin   (11)  . Each day, thank-you notes would be written differently to keep the ideas  (12)  .

Sometimes the Room Fairy would put forward a little  (13)  : “If you can finish your homework and  (14)   your lessons before dinner, I’d like to watch a particular television program with you tonight.” Sometimes some colored markers or other little items would be left in  (15)  of well done jobs the day  (16)  .

                   (17)   I can’t remember how long the Room Fairy continued leaving her love notes. When they were age appropriate, we used various versions of Post-Its(贴条). The bathroom mirror became the   (18)  center of our home. Appointments, notices about visiting relatives, lessons schedules could be posted.

This is   (19)  we share daily details of life and reminders. We all benefited from and   (20)   it. I believe the true advantage of the Room Fairy notes survives in our frequent and enjoyable communication.
