For fear that I would become a(n)   (2)  of the consumer society, I   (3)  hurried to a bicycle shop in my neighborhood.   As the shopkeeper, Mr. Johnson, was selling me the   (4)  , he said, “This is the best thing you could have done. Life has become hopelessly   (5)  . A bicycle is simple, and it brings to you   (6)  things: fresh air, sunshine and breeze.” I agreed.   (7)  as a child, I got on the bicycle and headed out onto the streets. He fixed a metal box with buttons____   (18)  the seat, and said, “Is there anything better than this oven when you feel   (19)  on your way? I can give you a special discount.” I was not strong enough to   (20)  the offer.    “I congratulate you once more; this is the best thing you could have done,” said Mr. Johnson in the end.

Few days ago, I went to school with tons of books, hoping to get a locker. All of a sudden, it started raining  (1)  . I hurried to pay for my locker, but I was disappointed  (2)  they informed me that they only accepted cash. I was $7. 00  (3)  , which meant I had to carry the books back home. It would be an exhausting two-hour  (4)  back home with all those books.

There was an elderly gentleman nearby.   (5)  my predicament (困境) , he asked me how much cash I needed. When I told him I needed $7, he quickly took out the money. “You don’t have to pay me back,” he said. I was  (6)  ; I didn’t know whether to take the money or come back with the books the next day. A young student who was working there noticed my  (7)  . “He is really nice,” said the student, “I was starving this morning and he bought  (8)  for me. He always helps people in different ways.”   (9)  thinking for a while, I took the money and  (10)  my locker.

The next day, I went to him and thanked him for  (11)  me and lending me the money. He said he forgot about it and did not  (12)  that I would give it back. “I am very happy,” he said, “not because I am getting my money back,   (13)  because this is the right way to go whatever you get   (14)  this world, give it back as much as you can. Spread kindness around the world  (15)  the smallest things you can do.”

Later, I found out that he was not involved with any charity   (16)  . He has been performing these types of  (17)  for years.                One night, when I was eight, my mother gently asked me a question I would never forget. “Sweetie, my company wants to   41   me but needs me to work in Brazil. This is like your teacher telling that you’ve done  42   and allowing you to skip a grade(跳级), but you’ll have to  43   your friends. Would you say yes to your teacher?” She gave me a hug and asked me to think about it. I was puzzled. The question kept me  44  for the rest of the night I had said “yes” but for the first time, I realized the  45  decisions adults had to make.
For almost four years, my mother would call us from Brazil every day. Every evening I’d   46    wait for the phone to ring and then tell her every detail of my day. A phone call, however, could never replace her  47  and it was difficult not to feel lonely at times.
During my fourth-grade Christmas break, we flew to Rio to visit her. Looking at her large  48  apartment, I became  49  how lonely my mother must have been in Brazil herself. It was then   50   I started to appreciate the tough choices she had to make on  51  family and work.  52   difficult decisions, she used to tell me, you wouldn’t know whether you make the right choice, but you could always make the best out of the situation, with passion and a  53  attitude.
Back home, I   54  myself that what my mother could do, I could, too. If she  55  to live in Rio all by herself, I, too, could learn to be  56  . I learn how to take care of myself and set high but achievable   57  .My mother is now back with us. But I will never forget what the   58   has really taught me. Sacrifices(牺牲)  59 in the end. The separation between us has proved to be  60   for me.

We are often warned by our teacher not to waste precious time, because time __41___ will never return. I think it quite ___42_. What does time look like? Nobody knows for we can’t see it or __43__ it and no amount of money can __44__ it. Time is abstract, so we have to __45__ about it.

Time passes very quickly. Some students say they don’t have __46__ time to review all their lessons. It is because they don’t know how to make __47__ of their time. They waste it in going to theatres, cinemas and parks, and doing __48_ things. Why do we study every day? Why do we __49__? Why do most people would rather __50__ buses instead of walking? The __51__ is very simple. We wish to save time because time is __52__.

Today we are living in the 21st century. We look upon time as __53__. When a person dies, his life _54__. Since life is short, we must __55__ our time and energy to our study so that we may be able to __56__ the people well in the future. Laziness is the __57__ of time, for it does not only bring us failure but also __58__ us other harm. If it is necessary for us to do our work today, let us do it today and not __59__ it until tomorrow. Remember that time is much more __60__ than money.
