            • 1. My husband and I were enjoying wandering through the stores in a shopping center. We went into a shop that sold   (1)  items in hopes of finding a few last-minute   (2)  gifts. The pleasant smell of handmade soaps teased our   (3)  as we walked through the door.
As I walked through the store, I   (4)  a wooden plaque(匾牌) hanging on a wall. I turned to take a   (5)  look and remembered nodding my head “yes” at the message printed on the plaque. Moving on, I enjoyed looking at other items some salesmen in Santa Clauses in the store carried,   (6)  found myself being drawn back to the plaque.
Standing in front of the plaque, I felt a little like a child who, when   (7)  the sandbox, finds some   (8)  treasure: a shiny coin or a lost toy. Here among the other handmade items, I found a very   (9)  , yet heart-touching treasure hidden in a message. A message I needed.
“Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass,” the plaque said, “It’s about learning to    (10)  in the rain.”
How often in our daily lives have we put   (11)  on our happiness? When we get the house   (12)  , then we can be happy. When things   (13)  down with the kids, then we’ll be able to do more together. There is so   (14)  joy at present when we are uncertain about when we will make it.
Looking at the plaque, I found myself unknowingly living the plaque’s message. I   (15)   off my shoes and stockings in a light   (16)  and began walking   (17)  through the water. Maybe my neighbors thought that I had lost my   (18)  wisdom, but I don’t care. For in that moment, I was alive. I wasn’t worried about bills, the future or any other day-to-day cares.

The plaque nowhangsin my living room. I walk past many times each day and frequently pause to ask myself “So, am I dancing in the rain?”

I think I am, I know I try to. I’m  (19)  taking time to pause and recognize and be grateful for the blessings that are all around me.

One step  (20)  , I am learning to dance in the rain.

At last, two (11) designers had the idea of an opening bridge. And they made it look like the Tower,so everyone was (12) .It was a wonderful success. There was so much traffic on the river (13) the bridge opened at least twelve times a day.A hundred years ago,the River Thames was London's (14) road.
Today big (15) don't come so far up the Thames.Tower Bridge opens perhaps only twice a week, (16) the same wonderful machinery is still working. It can still lift the two (17) opening arms-each 1,000tons (18) seventy meters for the ships to go through. And they can still open and close the (19) in oneandahalf minutes.

The British are the most voracious (求知欲强烈的) newspaper readers in the world. They read newspapers at   (1)  ; they walk to the bus reading a newspaper; they read a newspaper on the   (2)   as they go to work; and on the way back home, after work, they read an evening   (3)  .

There are many daily newspapers in   (4)  . All the nine national daily newspapers are   (5)  in London, and all appear every   (6)   except on Sundays. Most sell more than a million   (7)   a day and cost about three pence each.   (8)  the daily newspapers, there are a number of Sunday newspapers, many of which are   (9)  with the “dailies”. The Sunday papers are larger than the daily papers and are usually read for their   (10)  and other special long articles rather than their news reports.

Of all the “morning papers”, the most   (11)  is The Times, which is not a government newspaper. The various newspapers usually have their own views on politics,   (12)   they are not organs (机构) of the political parties,   (13)  the Communist Morning Star. It is free for a newspaper to say exactly what it   (14)  about anybody or anything, though, of course,   (15)  newspapers are responsible for what they publish.

However, it is true of some British papers, especially the Sunday papers, that in order to   (16)  more readers they have become vulgar (庸俗的). The main headlines have nothing to do with   (17)  news at all. And there are a few, especially The Times, the Guardian and the Observer, which are of the greatest importance in both guiding and expressing the free   (18)  of very important people.

Nearly all papers pay special attention to the   (19)  of sports and games. The evening newspapers are often bought because the reader wants to know the winner of a race, or to get a good trip for a   (20)  that is still to be run.

              Jame’s New Bicycle

James shook his money box again. Nothing! He carefully   (1)  the coins that lay on the bed 。 $24. 52 was all that he had. The bicycle he wanted was at least $90!   (2)   on earth was he going to get the   (3)  of the money?

He knew that his friends all had bicycles。It was   (4)  to hang around with people when you were the only one without wheels。 He thought about what he could do。 There was no   (5)  asking his parents, for he knew they had no money to   (6)

There was only one way to get money, and that was to  (7)  it。He would have to find a job。   (8)  who would hire him and what could he do? He decided to ask Mr。Clay for advice , who usually had   (9)  on most things。

“Well, you can start right here, ”said Mr. Clay。 “My windows need cleaning and my car needs washing。 ” That was the   (10)  of James’ s odd-job(零工) business。 For three months he worked every day after finishing his homework。 He was amazed by the   (11)  of jobs that people found for him to do。 He took dogs and babies for walks, cleared out cupboards, and mended books。 He lost count of the  (12)  of cars he washed and windows he cleaned, but the   (13)  increased and he knew that he would soon have   (14)  for the bicycle he longed for。

The day   (15)  came when James counted his money and found $94.32。 He   (16)  no time and went down to the shop to pick up the bicycle he wanted。 He rode   (17)  home, looking forward to showing his new bicycle to his friends。 It had been hard   (18)  for the money, but James knew that he valued his bicycle far more   (19)  he had bought it with his own money。 He had   (20)  what he thought was impossible, and that was worth even than the bicycle。

Dr. K was one of my favorite professors in college. He was unique because he admitted telling lies in his   41 . I remembered the  42  to his teaching at the beginning of his first class: “Now let me 43    how I teach. Between today until the class right before finals, I’ll put a   44  into each of my lectures. Your job is to try and   45  me in the Lie of the Day.” And thus   46  our ten-week course. Early in the course, the Lie of the Day was usually obvious —  47  causing a forest of raised  48 to challenge the lie. Dr. K would smile, saying, “Very good! In fact, the opposite is   49 .”

As the course progressed,   50 , the Lie of the Day became less   51 . Every once in a while, a lecture would   52  with nobody catching the lie. On such days, we would all sit in   53 , while Dr. K, looked quite   54  with himself and announced: “Ah ha! Each of you has one lie in your   55 . Discuss what it might be, and I will tell you next Monday.” Those lectures forced us to   56  what we had set down in our notebooks the following week.

It’s years since I   57 . While my knowledge taught by Dr. K has faded over time, the lessons will always stay   58  with me. “Experts” can be   59  and say things that sound right. So build a habit of   60  new information and check it against things you already accept as a fact.

            • 8. A   (1)  thing happened    (2)  me last Sunday. It was such a beautiful day   (3)  I drove to go for a look in the country.
On the way back home, my   (4)  stopped. It was out of gas on a   (5)  road far from a town! I decided to walk until I found someone   (6)  could sell some gas. I had walked almost a mile   (7)  I finally found a house near the   (8)  _. I was glad to see it because it was getting dark.
I knocked at the door and a little old lady with long white hair   (9)  _. She said, “I’ve been   (10)  _for you here for a long time. Come in.   (11)  is almost ready.”
“But I only came for some gas,” I answered. I couldn’t   (12)  what she was talking about.

She just kept    (16)  me Alfred and talking about how long it had been    (17)  she had seen me. She was acting very strangely and I was anxious to leave. As soon as she went to get tea, I went out of the house as fast as I   (18)
Fortunately, there was another house down the road and I was able to buy the gas I needed. When I told the man about my   (19)  , he said, “Oh, that’s Miss Emily. She lives by herself in that big house. She’s strange, but she wouldn’t   (20)  anybody. She is still waiting for the man she was going to marry thirty years ago. The day before their wedding he left home and never came back because of the war.”

One of the most remarkable things about the human mind is our ability to imagine the future. Once upon a time all the spirits set about building two palaces: a palace of truth, and a palace of lies. Every time a child told the truth, a brick was   (1)  for the palace of truth. The spirits of truth would then take it and   (2)   it to the growing walls.

In just the same way was the palace of lies   (3)  . Each brick was created   (4)   a child told a lie. Both  (5)   were impressive (令人印象深刻) and each group of   (6)   worked hard to try to   (7)   that their own palace was the   (8)  . So, the lying spirits, who were much more tricky (狡猾的) and   (9)  , sent a group of spirits to the world to get children to tell more and more   (10)  . These spirits were   (11)  , and started getting many more bricks. As a result, their palace became   (12)   and more impressive.

But one day, something   (13)   happened in the palace of lies. One of the   (14)   turned into a paper box. A little while later another brick turned into glass, and broke into pieces. And so, little by little, it became clear that whenever a lie was   (15)  , the brick that it had created   (16)   its from, and finally disappeared. In this way, the palace of lies became weaker and weaker, and in the end it   (17)   fell to pieces.
