One day, a woman from The Express News called. She said she wanted to work on a(n)  (1)  on me. When she had finished    (2)   me for the article, she asked, “What are you planning to do next?”

Well, at the   (3)   , there was actually nothing I was planning on doing next, and what   (4)   out for us was, “I’m thinking about    (5)    the Guinness Book of World Records for Fastest-Talking Female.”

The newspaper article came out the next day, and the writer had    (6)   my final remarks(评论)about trying to break the World’s Fastest-Talking Female record. At about 5:00 that afternoon, I got a    (7)     from Larry King , asking me to go on the    (8)  . They would   (9)    me up at 8:00 — because they wanted me to do it that night!

I    (10)    the phone for a while, and then I called Guinness to find out   (11)    to break a fast-talking record. They told me I would have to recite something. I began   (12)  . I was both    (13)   and excited at the same time.

At 8:00, the car came. I practised the whole way there, and by the time I reached the     (14)    . I was tongue-tied. I asked the woman in charge, “What   (15)    I don’t break the record?”

“Larry doesn’t    (16)    if you break it or not,” she said. ” “He just cares that you try it on his show.” So I asked myself, “What’s the   (17)    that can happen? I’ll look like a fool on television!” A   (18)    thing, I told myself,   (19)    I could live through that. And what if I break the record?

So I decided just to give it my best shot, and I did. I broke the record, becoming the World’s Fastest-Talking Female   (20)    speaking 585 words in one minute!

There are times when people are so tired that they fall asleep almost anywhere. We can see there is a lot of sleeping on the bus or train on the __41__ home from work in the evenings. A man will be __42__ the newspaper, and seconds later it __43__ as if he is trying to __44__ it. Or he will fall asleep on the shoulder of the stranger __45__ next to him. __46__ place where unplanned short sleep __47__ is in the lecture hall where a student will start snoring(打鼾)so __48__ that the professor has to ask another student to __49__ the sleeper awake. A more embarrassing(尴尬)situation occurs when a student starts falling into sleep and the __50__ of  the head pushes the arm off the __51__, and the movement carries the __52__ of the body along. The student wakes up on the floor with no_53__ of getting there. The worst time to fall asleep is when __54__. Police reports are full of __55__ that occur when people fall into sleep and go __56__ the road. If the drivers are __57__, they are not seriously hurt. One woman's car, __58__, went into the river. She woke up in four feet of __59__ and thought it was raining. When people are really __60__,nothing will stop them from falling asleep-----no matter where they are.

I used to believe politeness was a thing of the past, but I had to change my thinking after my experience in a happening coffee place with two of my grown-up daughters. Yesterday I was walking along a busy road when I noticed a young man standing near the pedestrian crossing, selling toys.

Usually I would   (1)   and hurry past such sellers before being approached to buy something. But I found this young man was  (2)  , so I stood for some time without crossing the street. I wanted to see   (3)  he sold his toys.

                 (4)  , a young mother with a small child came by and the child was   (5)  by one of the toys in a large box that made a noise. She   (7)  a 10-dollar note from her purse and told the young man that she was giving him 10 dollars and wanted the   (8)  back. I was wondering how he was going to give it back. She then out her hand into the bag and took out the balance while I was  (11)   her like a hawk(鹰).

I realized that this young man depended on   (12)  people not to cheat him. There was no   (13)  of him knowing if someone took out more than they should have done. I was so   (14)   by how this disabled man believed in people that I bought a toy from him I didn’t  (15)  at all.

I put my hand in, but didn’t take any change. I hope he will find that he has more   (18)   than he should when he gets home. As I walked down the street, I saw another kid walking with his father,  (19)   I gave him the little toy. Then, I walked on, hoping that two people would have a   (20)  smile on their faces that day.

I should know.I have been doing this for 20years.Why is it that I need a sign to remind me?
Every other week in my neighborhood we place either recycled bottles or paper out with our garbage. There is a (1) alongside the road that says"This is bin week"or"This is paper week".The schedule is simply changed every other week. But I can never (2) which week is which.Every week,I make a(n) (3) to look for the sign.
There was a period a few months ago when no one changed the sign.
              I had (4) emotions.I was confused,angry and concerned.Confused because I didn't know what to do. (5) because someone should have changed it!Concerned because,after (6) that"someone"for almost twenty years,I (7) that perhaps something had happened to that"someone".
Then, yesterday I finally saw the man who (8) the sign.I slowed down and wanted to tell him how much I (9) what he did.I couldn't stop in time (10) I found that the traffic sign said"The Next Exit Is 2km".So I drove as the traffic sign (11)
By the time I got back, the man was gone.I felt so (12) .I should have stopped alongside the road and just said"thank you".I (13) in front of the sign and thought about how many times in my life I looked for a sign to tell me what to do.I was (14) that all too often I missed an (15) because I was looking for a sign.Today I wanted to tell"someone"how (16) I think their efforts are but missed the opportunity.
So,I wrote a (17) and placed it next to the sign.
If you have been (18) to move forward towards a dream, say (19) to someone who lends you a hand,or begin a new project, this may be the sign you've been looking for.
The note (20) ,"This is do it now week."

I have always considered myself a positive optimist, trying to find the best in every situation. Iˈve recently become aware of how two little  (1)   have had a great impact on people.

My son  (2)  to tell me about a house he was interested in.I said, "Honey, I am glad that youˈve found something you like,   (3)  …"There, I continued, "Donˈt you think, with the gas prices, you might want to buy one  (4)  to your work?" As he told me all about the possible house, I could hear the  (5)  in his voice. My daughter  (10)  at my door dressed like a princess on her way to the prom. I told her how graceful looked and I was  (11)  of the young lady she has become, and I said, "Sweetheart, you  (12)  having a great time, but please donˈt drink tonight." I know she doesnˈt engage in  (13)  behavior; sheˈs responsible and sensible. She looked as though Iˈd snatched her crown. "Mom!" The tone of her voice indicated how Iˈd  (14)  her feel. How I wish Iˈd said, "I want you to have a great time, AND I   (15)  you."

My husband helps around the house. I was  (16)  he had lightened my work load. I told him how wonderful he is, and I used that naughty word again."BUT,why did you  (17)  crumbs(面包屑)all over the counter? "Why?Why?Why didnˈt I say," Thank you, AND I am  (18)  or all you do around the house."

Iˈve been doing some  (19)  . I am going to remove that naughty little word from my  (20)  and replace it with the word AND. This is a decision I intend to keep!

I used to believe in the American Dream, which meant a job, a mortgage (按揭), credit cards, success, I wanted it and worked toward it like everyone else, all of us   46   chasing the same thing.

One year, through a series of unhappy events, it all fell   47  . I found myself homeless and alone. I had my truck and $56. I   48   the countryside for some place I could rent for the   49   possible amount. I came upon a shabby house four miles up a winding mountain road   50   the Potomac River in West Virginia. It was  51  , full of broken glass and rubbish. I found the owner, rented it, and   52   a corner to camp in.

The locals knew nothing about me,   53   slowly, they started teaching me the   44   of  being a neighbor. They dropped off blankets, candles, and tools, and began   55   around to chat. They started to teach me a belief in a   56   American Dream — not the one of individual achievement but of   57  .

What I had believe in, all those things I thought were   58   for a civilized life, were nonexistent in this place.   59   on the mountain, my most valuable passions were my   60   with my neighbors.

Four years later, I moved back into   61  . I saw many people were having a really hard time,   62   their jobs and homes. I managed to rent a big enough house to   63   a handful of people. There are four of us now in the house, but over time I’ve had nine people come in and move on to other places. We’d all be in   64    if we hadn’t handed together.

The American Dream I believe in now is a shared one. It’s not so much about what I can get for myself; it’s about   65   we can all get by together.
