              The Use of Examinations

A good education should make people think for themselves. But the exam can never do anything like that.

First, examinations are second to none because it brings anxiety to students. As soon as a child begins school, he enters a world of terrible competition.

Second, exams do not interest students to read or to learn widely. They do not help students to look for more and more knowledge, but try to put as much as possible into the students’ head.

Third, they lower the standards of teaching, for they do not give any freedom to teachers to decide what to teach. Teachers themselves have no choice but to train their students in exam techniques. The most successful students are not always the best educated but the best trained in the technique of exams.

Fourth, they can tell you nothing about a person’s true ability. The exams are often nothing more than a subjective assessment(主观评价) by some examiners.

However, if there are no exams, few students or even no one will do any revision or study!

My doorbell rings at11 a.m. On the step, I find an elderly Chinese lady; she is small and slight, and she’s holding the hand of a little boy. In her other hand, she holds a paper carrier bag.

I know this lady. It is by no means her first visit. She is the little boy’s grandmother, and her daughter bought the house next door last October.

My visitor’s daughter, Nicole (who speaks fluent English), is currently inShanghai, but her parents are in Vancouver for the summer with the little boy. Nicole has told her mother that I am having heart surgery shortly, and the result is that her mother has decided I need to be supplied with meals.

I know what is inside the paper carrier bag—a thermos with hot soup and a stainless-steel container with a meal of rice, vegetables and either chicken, meat or shrimp, sometimes with a kind of pancake. This has become an almost-daily occurrence.

She doesn’t speak English and all I can say in Mandarin is hello.

So here we are, two grandmothers a world away from where we were raised, neither of us able to speak the other’s language but communicating one way or another (with some help from technology). The doorbell keeps ringing and there is the familiar brown paper carrier bag, handed smilingly to me by her.

I’m working on some more Mandarin words. “Thank you” is, of course, the first one. Somehow, it seems inadequate.

"Got your cellphone? Glasses? Wallet? ID?" I asked.

"Yes," my husband Avraham smiled. "Can we go now? You've got to meet your interview before I go to see my patient at one o'clock."

                 "Right. Got your medical bag?"

                 "Yes."

Even years after moving from North America, we still loved the half-hour drive to Jerusalem (耶路撒冷). The blue sky above the mountains, the trees, and the journey up to the Holy City always filled us with gratitude for living in Israel.

As we sped along, we came to our favorite part of the journey, where a wonderful view of Jerusalem suddenly appeared above the roadway. We had had a good time and arrived at my meeting with time to spare.

After my interview, I met Avraham at our favorite cafe. Avraham ordered his daily iced coffee and a bag of fresh bread. Glancing at the clock, I suggested we go to see his patient.

Avraham had to visit an elderly woman in Jerusalem because her daughter had called the day before to arrange the appointment. As there are very few foot specialists in Israel, Avraham would travel all over the country to see patients requiring specialized foot care. He searched his pockets for a note on which he had written the address.

But the note was nowhere to be found.

"I don't believe it! I must have left the address at home."

"Do you remember any part of the address?" I asked.

"I remember that there was a number 17 in it, because it was part of my birth date."

"Do you know the street name?"

"No. Just that it's in this neighborhood."

I had heard the family name mentioned the day before and remembered it sounded like a European name. "Let's try looking at buildings and see if the mailboxes can give us some help," I offered.

There once was a little boy who had a bad temper. His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence.

The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number o f nails hammered daily gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence.

Finally the day came when the boy didn’t lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper. The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone.

The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said,“You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave scars just like these. And no matter how many times you say you’re sorry, the wounds will still be there.”

              阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

It was in New Hampshire. Cody was an 11-year-old boy. Just like other boys, he enjoyed running around the lake, and sometimes picked yellow daisies for his mother’s kitchen table along the paths. But the thing he liked best was fishing. He went fishing whenever he had got a chance from the dock(船坞)at his family’s cabin on an island in the middle of the lake and he was proud of his fishing skills.

On the day before that year’s bass(鲈鱼) season opened, he and his father were fishing early in the evening, catching sunfish and perch with worms. Then he tied on a small silver lure(诱饵)and practiced casting. The lure struck the water, stirring up colored ripples in the sunset, and then silver ripples as the moon rose over the lake. It was an unusually quiet evening. The gentle breeze from the lake was so refreshing.

After what seemed a long time, Cody noticed his fishing pole doubled over, and he knew at once that something huge was on the other end. His father watched with admiration as the boy skillfully worked the fish alongside the dock.

Finally, he very carefully lifted the exhausted fish from the water. It was the largest one he had ever seen, but it was a bass.

The boy and his father looked at the handsome fish, gills playing back and forth in the moonlight. The father lit a match and looked at his watch. It was 10 P.M. —two hours before the season opened. He looked at the bass, then at Cody.

“You’ll have to put the fish back, son,” he said.

              “Dad!” cried the boy.

“There will be other fish,” said his father gently but firmly.

“Not as big as this one,” cried the boy again.

However, instead of finding a holy man,our hero entered a room and saw a great deal of activity:merchants coming and going, people chatting in the corners,a band playing sweet music, and there was a table with different kinds of delicious food on it.The wise man talked to everybody, and the young man had to wait for two hours until it was time for his audience.

The wise man listened attentively to the reason for the boy's visit, but told him that at that moment he did not have the time to explain to him the secret of happiness. He offered his suggestion that the young man take a walk around his castle and come back in two hours'time.

"However,I want to ask you a favor,"he added, handing the boy a teaspoon,in which he poured two drops of oil."While you walk, carry this spoon and don't let the oil spill(溢出)."

The young man began to walk around the castle, always keeping his eyes fixed on the spoon. At the end of two hours he returned to the presence of the wise man.

"So,"asked the wise man,"did you see the beautiful curtains hanging from the windows of my dining room? Did you see the garden that the master of gardeners took ten years to create? Did you notice the beautiful furniture in my library?"

Embarrassed, the young man admitted that he had seen nothing. His only concern was not to spill the drops of oil the wise man had given him.

"So, go back and see the wonders of my world,"said the wise man."You can't trust a man if you don't know his house."

The food we eat seems to have a great effect on our health. Although science has made big steps in making food more fit to eat, it has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat. Some research has shown that perhaps eighty percent of human illness is related to food and forty percent of cancer is related to food as well. That food is related to illness is not a new discovery. In 1945, some researchers realized that things commonly used to keep colour in meats and other food additives(添加剂)caused cancer.

Yet, these additives remain in our food, and it is difficult to know which things on the wrappings(包装)of foods are helpful or harmful. The additives which we eat are not all so direct. Farmers often give penicillin to their animals, and because of this, penicillin(青霉素)has been found in the milk of cows. Sometimes similar things are supplied to animals not for their health, but just to make a profit.

The farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals in order to get a higher price on the market. Although some countries have tried to control such things, the practice continues.

Chinese adults read news and threads on smartphone app WeChat for more than 40 minutes a day on average, according to the latest annual survey of China’s reading habits released on April 20. The results show that on average, Chinese adults use WeChat to read twice a day for a total length of more than 40 minutes. The survey showed that 66.4 percent of adults in China used WeChat to read, of which 72.9 percent read news, 67.1 percent read their friends’ updates and 20.9 percent read threads on public accounts.

Professor Wang Yuguang of the Department of Information Management in Peking University said the dream of having libraries all over the world is still not realized, and the presence of WeChat is filling this void (空白) to some extent. But personally, he thinks WeChat is taking too much of our time. Students are too reliant on WeChat.

“Reading on WeChat is fragmented (片段的), not to mention the inaccuracy of some of the information,” said Dean of Chinese Academy of Press and Publication Wei Yushan. Experts believe that children’s stories, academic reports and classic literature should still be read on paper.

            • 9. One morning, a friend of mine set the breakfast table beside a huge window, which overlooked the Tred Avon River. Suddenly she leaned forward and cried out, “There is a goose(鹅)out there!”

We saw the figure of a large Canada goose, very still, its wings folded tight to its sides and its feet frozen to the ice.

Then in the sky, she saw a line of swans(天鹅). They flew from the top of the sky downward and at last landed on the ice. My friend was on her feet, with one unbelieving hand against her mouth. As the swans surrounded the frozen goose, she feared that the poor goose might be pecked(啄)out by those great swan bills(天鹅的利喙).

Unexpectedly, those bills began to work on the ice. The long necks were lifted and curved down (弯下) again and again. They went on for a long time. At last, the goose was free and standing on the ice. And the swans stood nearby watching. Then, as if the goose was crying, “I cannot fly”, four of the swans came down around it. Their powerful bills chipped off the ice stuck in its feathers. Slowly, the goose spread its wings as far as they would go. Seeing the goose could freely move its wings, the swans flew slowly into the sky.

This is a true story. Every time I think of it, I can’t help asking, “If so for birds, why not for man?”
