              Welcome to Camp Wicosuta!

Camp Wicosuta is a traditional four-week sleepaway(集训)camp for girls in Hebron, New Hampshire. At Camp Wicosuta, girls develop confidence and self-respect by learning and developing new skills, making new friends, and having the time of their lives! At Camp Wicosuta, everything we do is centered on your daughter’s physical and emotional(情感的)safety. As educators, we understand what it takes for young girls to learn and grow both individually and within a group.

ONE OF THE ORIGINAL SLEEPAWAY CAMPS

Camp Wicosuta was founded in 1920 by Anna Rothman, one of the pioneers of sleepaway camps for girls. Mrs. Rothman knew that by getting young women out of urban areas and into the natural environment surrounded by caring role models and energetic friends, they would learn many of the lessons needed for them to get ahead in the world around them.

              THE “3 C’S”: CONFIDENCE, COMPETENCE & COMMUNITY

Camp Wicosuta teaches young girls skills that build self-confidence and self-respect. At Wico, our goal is for every child to walk away feeling confident of herself and competent in her ability in any of a number of areas. We teach these lessons in a physically and emotionally safe community in which our campers are challenged to move past their self-set limits.

If you wish to join us, you may click to download a Camp Enrollment Form, print and fill it out, and then mail or fax it to:

It seems that school children all over the world complain about their school food. What do students of your age eat for lunch at school?

Japan:High schools have canteens (食堂),which serve everything from noodles to rice, but nohamburger and chips.Other children bring food from home such as cold riceballs, meat or fish, pickles (泡菜) andvegetables.Students take home a menu for the coming month containing notes on nutrition (营养) value.Twice a year parents are invited to have a taste of the food. The class with the fewest leftovers (剩饭) at the end of the month receives a prize.

Untied States: A typical menu from a US school is made up of a hamburger with fried potatoes or roast chicken, lettuce and pickles, fruit and cookies. School lunches must also provide at least one-third of the dailydietary allowances (定量) of protein, vitamin A,vitamin C, iron, calcium, and calories.

Australia:Meat pies, sausage rolls and hotdogs are all traditional dishes in Australian schoolshops. But as the nation pays more attention to children's health, healthier foods have started to find their way onto schoolmenus. Many schools have used a "traffic light system". The sale of red-labelled foods, including cakes, chocolate and soft drinks, is served only twice a week. Healthier green-labelled foods such as sushi (寿司),sandwiches, corn and watermelon, however, are available everyday. In some schools, students have a choice of up to 89 foods to choose from, including popcorn and rice.

South Africa:Most of South Africa's schools do not serve meals at all. Classes end at 1:30 pm and students get their own lunches. Many students bring food from home, usually sandwiches.Fast food and fried food sell the best among students, which has led to a rise in obesity among children. But as more people began to realize the fact that being too fat may cause different diseases, some schools in towns have led the way towards better nutrition. Now students at these schools areprovided with lunches of porridge with vegetables, such as cabbages, onions, beans, carrots and tomatoes.

At the age of 5, most children in the USA start to go to school. Public education is free and most children go to schools near their homes. School in these early years is fun. The children learn to read and write. But they also play games and go on trips. There is no reason at such an early age for him to hit the books.

The situation changes as children become older. The subjects become more difficult. Students must learn about world history, algebra (代数), and the life sciences. Tests become more common. Pressure is growing to hit the books, study hard, and advance. However, most serious students only really begin hitting the books for long hours when they reach high school.

High school students who hope to continue their education at a college or university must take a special national test called the S-A-T. The test has two parts. The first part tests the student's ability with numbers and mathematical skills. The second part tests the student's ability in the English language.

The S-A-T test is very important. A high school student who gets a high score on the two parts of the test has a good chance to enter a top American college. For this reason, many students hit the books for months to prepare for the S-A-T.

What does family mean to you? Could you capture it in a photograph? If so, our great new competition is for you! All you have to do is take a picture that sums up your sense of family life.

The competition will be judged by the RD (Reader’s Digest) team and award-winning photo-grapher Barry Marsden. To get your creative juices flowing, here are two of our regular photographers’ tips for taking great pictures.

              Pal Hansen

The most important thing is to carry a camera around with you at all times. Use manual (手动的) settings as much as possible. Now that everything is digital I’d also say, “Shoot as much as possible,” because it doesn’t cost anything.

              Michelle McCarron

Kids find wonder in the simplest things, so as a photographer it helps to be ready for those moments. The connection across generations is sometimes best captured in a photograph. Frame your subject well. Get close to the action, or your subject, and choose your angle (角度) carefully. A slightly odd angle can make a photo different.
