              Welcome to Camp Wicosuta!

Camp Wicosuta is a traditional four-week sleepaway(集训)camp for girls in Hebron, New Hampshire. At Camp Wicosuta, girls develop confidence and self-respect by learning and developing new skills, making new friends, and having the time of their lives! At Camp Wicosuta, everything we do is centered on your daughter’s physical and emotional(情感的)safety. As educators, we understand what it takes for young girls to learn and grow both individually and within a group.

ONE OF THE ORIGINAL SLEEPAWAY CAMPS

Camp Wicosuta was founded in 1920 by Anna Rothman, one of the pioneers of sleepaway camps for girls. Mrs. Rothman knew that by getting young women out of urban areas and into the natural environment surrounded by caring role models and energetic friends, they would learn many of the lessons needed for them to get ahead in the world around them.

              THE “3 C’S”: CONFIDENCE, COMPETENCE & COMMUNITY

Camp Wicosuta teaches young girls skills that build self-confidence and self-respect. At Wico, our goal is for every child to walk away feeling confident of herself and competent in her ability in any of a number of areas. We teach these lessons in a physically and emotionally safe community in which our campers are challenged to move past their self-set limits.

If you wish to join us, you may click to download a Camp Enrollment Form, print and fill it out, and then mail or fax it to:

It has dramatic landscapes, a unique wealth of animals and plants, piles of gold and diamonds , and a mix of different cultures.

Welcome to South Africa; the host country of the World Cup tournament. Called the “ Rainbow Nation" for its cultural diversity, modem South Africa is in harmony with its past and is truly a coming together of the continentˈs cultures. From modem art galleries to ancient cave paintings , museums to cultural villages, visitors to the country have a lot to expenence.

South Africa is also a natural wonder. Wilderness trails, or safaris(狩猎远征), open up the wild bush to travelers . There is nothing like standing in the middle of nowhere and getting a close-up view of a black rhino or lion. In the vast silence, you are surrounded by the smell of grass with only the sound of your heartbeat for company. Outdoor activities do not end there. South Africa is an adventurerˈs paradise. Try diving, whitewater rafting, mountain climbing, canoeing, surfing and hot air ballooning.

With an area of l,219,912 square km ( the size of Chinaˈs Tibet autonomous region) , it has a population of  49,320,000 ( the same number as Chinaˈs Zhejiang Province). Unlike many other countries, South Africa has  three capital cities. Cape Town , the largest of the three , is the legislative(立法的)capital; Pretoria is the  administrative capital; and Bloemfontein is the judicial(司法的)capital.

Edward Wilson is America’s, if not the world’s, leading naturalist. In The Future of Life, he takes us on a tour of the world’s natural resources(资源). How are they used? What has been lost? What remains and is it able to continue with the present speed of use? Wilson also points out the need to understand fully the biodiversity(生物多样性)of our earth.

Wilson begins with an open letter to the pioneer in environment (环境) protection, Henry David Thoreau. He compares today’s Walden Pond with that of Thoreau’s day. Wilson will use such comparisons for the rest of the book. The problem is clear: man has done great damage to his home over the years. Can the earth, with human help, be made to return to biodiversity levels that will be able to support us in the future?

Biodiversity, Wilson argues, is the key to settling many problems the earth faces today. Even our agricultural crops can gain advantages from it. A mere hundred species(物种) are the basis of our food supply, of which but twenty carry the load. Wilson suggests changing this situation by looking into ten thousand species that could be made use of, which will be a way to reduce the clearing of the natural homes of plants and animals to enlarge farming areas.

At the end of the book, Wilson discusses the importance of human values in considering the environment. If you are to continue to live on the earth, you may well read and act on the ideas in this book.

What does family mean to you? Could you capture it in a photograph? If so, our great new competition is for you! All you have to do is take a picture that sums up your sense of family life.

The competition will be judged by the RD (Reader’s Digest) team and award-winning photo-grapher Barry Marsden. To get your creative juices flowing, here are two of our regular photographers’ tips for taking great pictures.

              Pal Hansen

The most important thing is to carry a camera around with you at all times. Use manual (手动的) settings as much as possible. Now that everything is digital I’d also say, “Shoot as much as possible,” because it doesn’t cost anything.

              Michelle McCarron

Kids find wonder in the simplest things, so as a photographer it helps to be ready for those moments. The connection across generations is sometimes best captured in a photograph. Frame your subject well. Get close to the action, or your subject, and choose your angle (角度) carefully. A slightly odd angle can make a photo different.

              HOW TO ENTER

★ Take a clear photo with either a phone or digital camera. Send it to rdphotocomp@readersdigest. co.uk by 5 pm, August 30, 2014. Please include a brief explanation of who’s in the entry (参赛作品).

★There are two categories — one for adults and one for under-18s.

★In the adult category, the winner will receive £500. The under-18 winner will receive £250 of high-street vouchers (代金券) for a store of their choice.

              Rules:

Please make sure that pictures are not published before.

If you are under 16 you must ask your parent’s permission to enter this competition.

We will use entries in all print and electronic media. We cannot return your entry.
