When I was nine years old,I loved to go fishing with my dad.But the only thing that wasn’t very fun about it was that he could catch many fish while I couldn’t catch anything.I usually got pretty upset and kept asking him why.He always answered,“Son,if you want to catch a fish, you have to think like a fish”,I remember being even more upset then because,“I’m not a fish!”I didn’t know how to think like a fish.Besides,I reasoned, how could what I think influence what a fish does?
As I got a little older I began to understand what my dad really meant. So,I read some books on fish. And I even joined the local fishing club and started attending the monthly meetings.I learned that a fish is a cold-blooded animal and therefore is very sensitive to water temperature. That is why fish prefer shallow water to deep water because the former is warmer.Besides, water is usually warmer in direct sunlight than in the shade.Yet,fish don’t have any eyelids(眼皮) and the sun huts their eyes…The more I understood fish, the more I became effective at finding and catching them..
When I grew up and entered the business world,I remember hearing my first boss say,“We all need to think like sales people.”But it didn’t completely make sense. My dad never once said,“If you want to catch a fish you need to think like a fisherman.”What he said was,“You need to think like a fish.”Years later, with great efforts to promote long-term services to people much older and richer than me,I gradually learned what we all need is to think more like customers. It is not an easy job.I will show you how in the following chapters.

Parents who help their children with homework may actually be bringing down their school grades.Other forms of prenatal involvement, including volunteering at school and observing a child's class, also fail to help, according to the most recent study on the topic.
The findings challenge a key principle of modern parenting(养育子女) where schools except them to act as partners in their children's education.Previous generations concentrated on getting children to school on time, fed, dressed and ready to learn.
Kaith Robinson, the author of the study, said,“I really don't know if the public is ready for this but there are some ways parents can be involved in their kids'education that leads to declines in their academic performance. One of the things that was consistently negative was parents'help with homework.“Robinson suggested that may be because parents themselves struggle to understand the task.“They may either not remember the material their kids are studying now,or in some cases never learnt it themselves, but they're still offering advice.“
Robinson assessed parental involvement performance and found one of the most damaging things a parent could do was to punish their children for poor marks. In general, about 20% of parental involvement was positive, about 45% negative and the rest statistically insignificant.
Common sense suggests it was a good thing for parents to get involved because“children with good academic success do have involved parents“,admitted Robinson. But he argued that this did not prove parental involvement was the root cause of that success.“A big surprise was that Asian-American parents whose kids are doing so well in school hardly involved. They took a more reasonable approach, conveying to their children how success at school could improve their lives.“
58.The underlined expression“parental involvement“in Paragraph 1probably means
.
A.parents'expectation on children's health
B.parents'participation in children's education
C.parents'control over children's life
D.parents'plan for children's future
59.What is the major finding of Robinson's study?
A.Modern parents raise children in a more scientific way.
B.Punishing kids for bad marks is mentally damaging.
C.Parental involvement is not so beneficial as expected.
D.Parents are not able to help with children’s homework.
60.The example of Asian-American parents implies that parents should
.
A.help children realize the importance of schooling
B.set a specific life goal for their children
C.spend more time improving their own lives
D.take a more active part in school management.

Six days a week,up and down the red hills of northeast Georgia,my grandfather brought the mail to the folks there. At age 68,he retired from the post office, but he never stopped serving the community.
On his 80th birthday,I sent him a letter, noting the things we all should be thankful for-good health, good friends and good outcomes.By most measurements he was a happy man. Then I suggested it was time for him to slow down.At long last,in a comfortable home, with a generous pension,he should learn to take things easy.
“Thank you for your nice words,”he wrote in his letter back,“and I know what you meant, but slowing down scares me.Life isn’t having it made; it’s getting it made.”
“The finest and happiest years of our lives were not when all the debts were paid, and all difficult experiences had passed, and we had settled into a comfortable home.No.I go back years ago, when we lived in a three-room house, when we got up before daylight and worked till after dark to make ends meet.I rarely had more than four hours of sleep. But what I still can’t figure out is why I never got tired, never felt better in my life.I guess the answer is,we were fighting for survival, protecting and providing for those we loved. What matters are not the great moments, but the partial victories, the waiting, and even the defeats. It’s the journey, not the arrival, that counts.”
The letter ended with a personal request:“Boy,on my next birthday, just tell me to wake up and get going, because I will have one less year to do things-and there are ten million things waiting to be done.”
Christina Rossetti,an English poet, once said:“Does the road wind uphill all the way?Yes,to the very end.”Today,at 96,
my grandfather is still on that long road, climbing

Once when I was facing a decision that involved high risk,I went to a friend. He looked at me for a moment, and then wrote a sentence containing the best advice I’ve ever had:Be bold and brave-and mighty (强大的) forces will come to your aid.
Those words made me see clearly that when I had fallen short in the past,it was seldom because I had tried and failed. It was usually because I had let fear of failure stop me from trying at all.On the other hand, whenever I had plunged into deep water, forced by courage or circumstance,I had always been able to swim until I got my feet on the ground again.
Boldness means a decision to
bite off more than you can eat.
.And there is nothing mysterious about the mighty forces. They are potential powers we possess:energy, skill, sound judgment, creative ideas-even physical strength greater than most of us realize.
Admittedly, those mighty forces are spiritual ones. But they are more important than physical ones.A college classmate of mine,Tim,was an excellent football player, even though he weighed much less than the average player.“In one game I suddenly found myself confronting a huge player, who had nothing but me between him and our goal line,”said Tim.“I was so frightened that I closed my eyes and desperately threw myself at that guy like a bullet-and stopped him cold.”
Boldness-a willingness to extend yourself to the extreme-is not one that can be acquired overnight. But it can be taught to children and developed in adults.Confidence builds up.Surely, there will be setbacks (挫折) and disappointments in life; boldness in itself is no guarantee of success. But the person who tries to do something and fails is a lot better off than the person who tries to do nothing and succeeds.
So,always try to live a little bit beyond your abilities-and you’ll find your abilities are greater than you ever dreamed.
51.Why was the author sometimes unable to reach his goal in the past?
.
A.He faced huge risks.
B.He lacked mighty forces.
C.Fear prevented him from trying.
D.Failure blocked his way to success.
52.What is the implied meaning of the underlined part?
.
A.Swallow more than you can digest.
B.Act slightly above your abilities.
C.Develop more mysterious powers.
D.Learn to make creative decisions.
53.What was especially important for Tim’s successful defense in the football gam
.
A.His physical strength.
B.His basic skill.
C.His real fear.
D.His spiritual force.
54.What can be learned from Paragraph 5?
.
A.Confidence grows more rapidly in adults.
B.Trying without success is meaningless.
C.Repeated failure creates a better life.
D.Boldness can be gained little by little.
55.What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?
.
A.To encourage people to be courageous.
B.To advise people to build up physical power.
C.To tell people the ways to guarantee success.
D.To recommend people to develop more abilities.

My dad loved pennies, especially those with the elegant stalk(茎) of wheat curving around each side of the ONE CENT on the back. Those were the pennies he grew up with during the Depression.
As a kid,I would go for walks with Dad,spying coins along the way-a penny here,a dime(一角硬币) there.Whenever I picked up a penny,he'd ask,“Is it a wheat?“It always thrilled him when we found one of those special coins produced between 1909and 1958,the year of my birth.
One gray Sunday morning in winter, not long after my father's death in 2002,I was walking down Fifth Avenue, feeling bereft.I found myself in front of the church where Dad once worked.I was warmly shown in and led to a seat.Hearing Dad's favorite“A Mighty Fortress Is Our God“,I burst into tears. We'd sung that at his funeral.
After the service,I shook the pastor's(牧师) hand and stepped onto the sidewalk-and there was a penny.I bent to pick it up,turned it over, and sure enough,it was a wheat.A 1944,a year my father was serving on a ship in the South Pacific.
That started it.Suddenly wheat pennies began turning up on the sidewalks of New York everywhere.I got most of the important years:his birth year,my mom's birth year, the year he graduated from college, the year he met my mom,the year they got married, the year my sister was born. But alas,no 1958wheat penny-my year, the last year they were made.
The next Sunday, after the service,I was walking up Fifth Avenue and spotted a penny in the middle of a crossing.Oh,no,it was a busy street;cabs were speeding by-should I risk it?I just had to get it.
A wheat! But the penny was worn, and I couldn't read the date.On arriving home,I took out my glasses and took it to the light. There was my birthday!
I found 21wheat pennies on the streets of Manhattan in the year after my father died, and I don't think that's a coincidence.

Imagination and fantasy can play an important role in achieving the things we fear.Children know this very well.Fred Epstein,in his book
If I Make It to Five
,tells a story he heard from one of friends about Tom,a four-year-old boy with a cancer in his back bone.He came through several operations and a lot of pain by mastering his imagination.
Tom loved to pretend, and he particularly loved to play superheroes.Dr.Epstein explained that it was actually a brilliant way for his young mind to handle the terrifying and painful life he led.
The day before his third trip to the operating room,Tom was terribly afraid.“Maybe I could go as Superman,”he whispered to his mom.Hearing this, the mother hesitated for a while. She had avoided buying the expensive costume (戏装),but finally she agreed.
The next day Tom appeared as the powerful Superman, showing off through the hospital halls and coolly waving his hand to the people greeting him along the way.And Tom,with the strength of his fantasy, successfully made it through the operation.
The power of imagination need not be reserved for children only.we all have the power to use our fantasies to attempt things we never thought possible,to go through those things that seem impossible, and to achieve what we never believed we could.Just as Dr.Epstein puts it,“If you can dream it,you can do it.”
It doesn’t mean that you should dress as a superhero for your next job interview. But,next time you are tested in a way that seems impossible, imagine what it would take to overcome it.Become the person you need to become to win over your challenge and do it in your mind first. So,let your imagination run wild, and dare to dream.
26.What do we know about Tom?
A.He was seriously ill
B.He was a dishonest boy.
C.He was crazy about magic.
D.He was Dr.Epstein’s patient.
27.What can be inferred about Tom’s mother?
A.She was a rich lady.
B.She refused Tom’s request.
C.She wanted Tom to be a superhero.
D.She wanted to get Tom through the pain.
28.When Tom went for the third operation,he
A.pretended to be painful
B.acted like a superhero
C.appeared in poor spirits
D.argued with his mother
29.In the last paragraph, you are advised
A.to go through some difficult tests
B.to wake up from your wild dreams
C.to become a powerful person in your mind
D.to wear expensive clothes for job interviews
30.What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To tell us an interesting story.
B.To help us make right decisions.
C.To advise us to care about children.
D.To encourage us to use our imagination.

When my brother and I were young,my mom would take us on Transportation Days.
It goes like this:You can’t take any means of transportation more than once.We would start from home, walking two blocks to the rail station. We’d take the train into the city center, then a bus, switching to the tram, then maybe a taxi.We always considered taking a horse carriage in the historic district, but we didn’t like the way the horses were treated,so we never did.At the end of the day,we took the subway to our closest station, where Mom’s friend was waiting to give us a ride home-our first car ride of the day.
The good thing about Transportation Days is not only that Mom taught us how to get around. She was born to be multimodal (多方式的).She understood that depending on cars only was a failure of imagination and, above all,a failure of confidence-the product of a childhood not spent exploring subway tunnels.
Once you learn the route map and step with certainty over the gap between the train and the platform, nothing is frightening anymore.New cities are just light-rail lines to be explored. And your personal car,if you have one, becomes just one more tool in the toolbox-and often an inadequate one, limiting both your mobility and your wallet.
On Transportation Days,we might stop for lunch on Chestnut Street or buy a new book or toy,but the transportation was the point.First,it was exciting enough to watch the world speed by from the train window. As I got older,my mom helped me unlock the mysteries that would otherwise have
paralyzed
my first attempts to do it myself:How do I know where to get off?How do I know how much it costs? How do I know when I need tickets, and where to get them? What track, what line, which direction, where’s the stop, and will I get wet when we go under the river?
I’m writing this right now on an airplane,a means we didn’t try on our Transportation Days and,we now know, the dirtiest and most polluting of them all.My flight routed me through Philadelphia. My multimodal mom met me for dinner in the airport. She took a train to meet me.
55.Which was forbidden by Mom on Transportation Days?
A.Having a car ride.
B.Taking the train twice.
C.Buying more than one toy.
D.Touring the historic district.
56.According to the writer, what was the greatest benefit of her Transportation Days?
A.Building confidence in herself.
B.Reducing her use of private cars.
C.Developing her sense of direction.
D.Giving her knowledge about vehicles.
57.The underlined word“paralyzed”(in Para.5)is closest in meaning to“
”.
A.displayed B.justified C.ignored D.ruined

.The firstborn is,for a while,an only child, and therefore has a completely different experience of the parents than those born later. The next child is,for a while, the youngest, until the situation is changed by a new arrival. The mother and father themselves are changing and growing up too.One sibling might live in a stable and close family in the first few years; another might be raised in a family crisis, with a disappointed mother or an angry father.
Sibling competition was identified as an important shaping force as early as in 1918.But more recently, researchers have found many ways in which brothers and sisters are a lasting force in each others’lives.Dr.Annette Henderson says firstborn children pick up vocabulary more quickly than their siblings. The reason for this might be that the later children aren’t getting the same one-on-one time with parents. But that doesn’t mean that the younger children have problems with language development.Later-borns don’t enjoy that much talking time with parents, but instead they harvest lessons from bigger brothers and sisters, learning entire phrases and getting an understanding of social concepts such as the difference between“I”and“me”.
A Cambridge University study of 140children found that siblings created a rich world of play that helped them grow socially.Love-hate relationships were common among the children.Even those siblings who fought the most had just as much positive communication as the other sibling pairs.
One way children seek more attention from parents is by making themselves different from their siblings, particularly if they are close in age.Researchers have found that the first two children in a family are typically more different from each other than the second and third.Girls with brothers show their differences to a maximum degree by being more
feminine
than girls with sisters.A 2003research paper studied adolescents from 185families over two years, finding that those who changed to make themselves different from their siblings were successful in increasing the amount of warmth they gained from their parents.
