Getting rid of dirt, in the opinion of most people, is a good thing. However, there is nothing fixed about attitudes to dirt.
In the early 16th century, people thought that dirt on the skin was a means to block out disease, as medical opinion had it that washing off dirt with hot water could open up the skin and let ills in. A particular danger was thought to lie in public baths. By 1538, the French king had closed the bath houses in his kingdom. So did the king of England in 1546. Thus began a long time when the rich and the poor in Europe lived with dirt in a friendly way. Henry IV, King of France, was famously dirty. Upon learning that a nobleman had taken a bath, the king ordered that, to avoid the attack of disease, the nobleman should not go out.
Though the belief in the merit(好处) of dirt was long-lived, dirt has no longer been regarded as a nice neighbor ever since the 18th century. Scientifically speaking, cleaning away dirt is good to health. Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of preventing disease. Yet, it seems that standards of cleanliness have moved beyond science since World WarⅡ. Advertisements repeatedly sell the idea; clothes need to be whiter than white, cloths ever softer, surfaces to shine. Has the hate for dirt, however, gone too far?
Attitudes to dirt still differ hugely nowadays. Many first-time parents nervously try to warn their children off touching dirt, which might be responsible for the spread of disease. On the contrary, Mary Ruebush, an American immunologist(免疫学家),encourages children to play in the dirt to build up a strong immune system. And the latter position is gaining some ground.

I was once unemployed. But I never let it affect our family. I kept the family together.

I pulled the car into the garage and got out, just like every night for the past 16 years. The difference was that I wouldn’t have a job to go to in the morning. I used to be a lead in technology for a national bank until it was closed. I’d put my heart and soul into my job. Not only did I work long hours, I was on call 24 hours a day, weekends and holidays too. If someone had a tech problem, even at 2:00 am Christmas morning, I was on it. My kids joked that even though they were the teenagers, I was the one who was absorbed in my cellphone and had to be told not to text at the dinner table.

My wife, Michelle, had been able to go to back to work full time as an office manager once we heard my job was threatened. But our three kids would be going to college—our son, TJ, was a high school senior, and the girls, Sarah and Tara, were in ninth grade—and I wanted to five them the education and opportunities they deserved.

I stepped out into our yard. The lawn(草坪) and flower beds that my mum had tended so carefully were overrun with weeds. There was a Chinese tree in the middle of the yard that I remembered my parents planting when I was a boy. It needed caring. But I’d put on a lot of weight—no time to exercise with my crazy hours. I went up to the house. Michelle greeted me at the door with a hug. “It’s going to be okay,” she said. “Maybe you should think of this time a break. You deserve one.”

“I’m sorry, Dad,” TJ said. “I know how much your job meant to you.” His concern was mirrored in the girl’s faces.

“I’ll take care of this,” I told them. “I’m going to work round the clock to find a new job and get our lives back to normal.”

A farmer grew some vegetables in his garden. One day his wife was ill and he had no money. He had to sell some cabbages and carrots in the market. The next morning he took two baskets of vegetables to town. But it was raining hard that afternoon and there were few people in the street. When his vegetables were sold out, it was dark. He bought some medicine and hurried to his village.
On his way home he saw a person lying on the snow. He placed his baskets on the ground and was going to help the person to get up. At that time he found it was a dead man and there was much blood on his body. He was so afraid that he ran away quickly, without taking the baskets with him.
The next afternoon the farmer was sent to the police station. Having shown the baskets, an officer asked, “Are these yours” “Yes, sir.” the farmer answered timidly(胆怯地). “Have you killed the man” “No, no, sir.” the farmer said in a hurry. “When did you see the dead man” “About seven last evening.” “Did you see who killed the man” “No, sir.” The officer brought out a knife and asked, “Have you seen it yet” “No, sir.” The officer became angry and told the policemen to beat him up and sent him into prison. the officer wanted to trap the farmer into the confession(供认), but the farmer didn’t admit he was the murderer.

Life is a matter of choice. Seemingly, it means a choice of concrete things. But in fact, it means choosing a way of life. Life is to be lived and enjoyed, not to be wasted or complained about.

Though several years have passed, hardly can we forget the time when our society faced the threat from the life-and death disease --- SARS. Yet, even during those dreadful times, some suffering people remained optimistic. Instead of wearing white masks, some people turned to colorful ones, and thus displayed a happy mood. And some creative people dubbed SARS to mean “SMILE AND REMAIN SMILING.” People who survive these kinds of circumstances decide in their minds to carry on in spite of the hardships.

Although we cannot choose our appearance, inborn gifts and even avoid unexpected disasters and adversities (逆境), we do have the right to choose to live optimistically, to love our lives, to have dreams, and to cherish hopes.

Every morning when we get up, we have a choice of how we want to approach life that day.

A funny thing happened to Arthur when he was on the way to work one day. As he walked along Park Avenue near the First National Bank, he heard the sound of someone trying to start a car. He tried again and again but couldn’t get the car moving. Arthur stopped and asked, “It looks like you’ve got a problem, ” Arthur said.

“ I’m afraid so. I’m in a big hurry and I can’t start my car.”

“Is there something I can do to help?” Arthur asked. The young man looked at the two suitcases in the back seat and then said, “Thanks. If you’re sure it wouldn’t be too much trouble, you could help me these suitcases into a taxi.”

“ No trouble at all. I’d be glad to help.”

The young man got out and took one of the suitcases from the back seat. After placing it on the ground, he turned to get the other one. Just as Arthur picked up the first suitcase and started walking, he heard the long loud noise of an alarm.

It was from the bank. There had been a robbery(抢劫)

Park Avenue had been quiet a moment before. Now the air was filled with the sound of the alarm and the shouts of people running from all directions. Cars stopped and a passengers joined the crowd in front of the bank. People asked each other, “What happened?” But everyone had a different answer.

Arthur, still carrying the suitcase, turned to look at the bank and walked right into the young woman in front of him.

She looked at the suitcase and then at him. Arthur was surprised. “ Why is she looking at me like that?” He thought. “ The suitcase! She thinks I’m the bank thief!”

Arthur looked around at the crowd of people. He became frightened, and without another thought, he started to run.

Tomorrow’s World Book Day has inspired a slew of literary events throughout the capital. Xing Yi and Liu Zhihua report.

As World Book Day, April 23, approaches, various reading events are being held by government agencies, libraries and bookstores throughout the capital.

At the launch of the 5th Beijing Reading Season in Great Canal Park in Tongzhou district on Saturday night, 81-year-old Yin Zhiguang, head of Beijing Elocution Troupe, led the audience in reciting a poem.

Activities focusing on different readerships will highlight World Book Day in bookstores throughout Beijing, such as picture book sharing for children in Xidan Book Building, conversations with musicians and authors for young people in Sanlian Bookstore, talks with diplomats for people interested in international affairs in Wangfujing Xinhua bookstore, and a 12-hour late-night reading marathon for night owls at One-Way Space bookstore.

Recently, we conducted a survey about how many extra-curricular books students read per year. On average, each student read 5.34 books, which is definitely not adequate compared with their counterparts from the Western countries. It is upsetting to see the outcome. When asked what students in our school do in their spare time, they claim that they tend to watch TV and surf the Internet, for they can have great fun. Some students eve n complain that they are forced to attend some extra make-up classes so that they have no time to play, not to mention reading books.

I was in seventh grade when Danny transferred to my school. He had attractive looks.I fell for him the first day he arrived and many of the girls in my class felt the same way. However, that soon changed.

Danny had been going to our school for about a week when his parents picked him up in an old car.The girls who had previouslyadmiredhim looked down upon him.It was obvious that Danny was poor.

I had a poor family as well; I just hid it from everyone.I was ashamed of how we lived.I felt my friends would leave me if they knew the truth.I often came up with excuse after excuse in order to fit in

One day, our teacher, Mr.Sims, announced that the seventh grade field trip would be to an amusement park. The whole class became excited. But I sat back and listened, knowing my parents did not have the money to send me.It made me angry to feel so left out.But Danny simply told everyone that he wouldn’t be going. When Mr.Sims asked why, he stood up and stated,“My dad hurt his back and has been out of work for a while.I’m not asking my parents for money.”

Although not everyone accepted Danny after that day, he won over the respect of many of us for his courage and honesty.I was especially impressed by how he didn’t give in to thepeer pressure. As for me, I never admitted to my friends that I could not afford to go somewhere.
