              阅读表达 (共5小题; 每小题2分,满分10分)
(1)Freezing weather can mean frostbite and hypothermia unless a person is prepared. Today we talk about how to stay warm, dry and safe.
(2)Frostbite is damage that happens when skin is exposed to extreme cold for too long. It mainly happens on the hands, feet, nose and ears.
(3)People with minor cases of frostbite that affect only the skin may not suffer any permanent damage. But if deeper tissue is affected, a person is likely to feel pain every time the area gets cold.
(4)If blood vessels are damaged, people can suffer a gangrene infection. Sometimes the only way doctors can treat an injury like this is to remove frostbitten areas like fingers and toes.
(5)Hypothermia is a condition that develops when the body cannot produce as much heat as it releases. Signs of hypothermia include uncontrollable shaking, very slow breathing and difficulty thinking clearly. Hypothermia can lead to death if the person does not receive help.
(6)To avoid cold-related injuries, here is a simple way to remember four basic steps to staying warm. Think of COLD -- C.O.L.D.
(7)The C stands for cover. Wear a hat and scarf to keep heat from escaping through the head, neck and ears. And wear mittens instead of gloves. In gloves, the fingers are separated, so the hands might not stay as warm as they would in mittens.
(8)The O stands for overexertion. Avoid activities that will make you sweaty. Wet clothes and cold weather are a dangerous combination.
(9)L is for layers. Wearing loose, lightweight clothes, one layer on top of another, is better than wearing a single heavy layer of clothing. Make sure outerwear is made of material that is water-resistant and tightly knit.
(10)________________. In other words, stay as dry as possible. Pay attention to the places where snow can enter clothing. These include the tops of boots, the necks of coats and the wrist areas of mittens or gloves.
(11)And here are two other things to keep in mind -- one for children and the other for adults. Eating snow might be fun but it lowers the body's temperature. And drinking alcohol might make a person feel warm. But what it really does is weaken the body's ability to hold heat.
(12)Next week on the Health Report: advice from experts about what to do, and not to do, to help someone who is injured by cold weather.

Perhaps you are an average student with average intelligence. However, you can receive better grades if you want. Yes, even students with average intelligence can be top students without additional work. Here’s how:
1.Plan your time carefully. Make a list of your weekly tasks. Then make a schedule of your time. Be sure to set aside enough time to complete your normal reading and work assignments. Of course, studying shouldn’t occupy all of the free time on the schedule.
2.Make good use of your time in class. Listening to what the teacher says in class means less work later. Take notes to help you remember what the teacher says.
3.Skim before you read. Look over a passage quickly before you begin to read it more carefully. As you preview the material, you get some idea of the content and how it is organized. Later when you begin to read you will recognize less important material and you may skip some of these portions, Skimming(略读)helps double your reading speed and improve your comprehension as well.
              4.      . Go over your notes as soon as you can after class. Review important points mentioned in class as well as points you remain confused. If you know what the teacher will discuss the next day, skim and read that material, too. If you review your notes and textbook regularly, the material will become more meaningful and you will remember it longer. Regular review leads to improved performance on tests.
5.Develop a good attitude towards tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t worry excessively(过分地)about a single test.
There are other techniques that might help you with your studying. Improving your studying habits will improve your grades.
小题1:Which sentence in the passage can be replaced by the following one?
If you fail an exam, don’t let it trouble you too much.

小题2:According to the passage, how can an average student improve his/her grades?(within 10 words)

[1] The air we breathe is so freely available that we take it for granted. Yet without it we could not survive more than a few minutes. For the most part, the same air is available to everyone, and everyone needs it. Some people use the air to sustain them while they sit around and feel sorry for themselves. Others breathe in the air and use the energy it provides to make a magnificent life for themselves.
[2] Opportunity is just the same. It is everywhere. Opportunity is so freely available that we take it for granted. Yet opportunity alone is not enough to create success. Opportunity must be seized and acted upon in order to have value. So many people are so anxious to “get in” on a “ground floor opportunity”, as if the opportunity will do all the work. That’s impossible.
[3] Just as                                   , you need opportunity to succeed. It takes more than just breathing in the fresh air of opportunity, however. You must make use of that opportunity.’’ That’s not up to the opportunity. That’s up to you. It doesn’t matter what “floor” the opportunity is on. What matters is what you do with it.

[1] A healthy weight is a weight that lowers your risk for health problems. For most people, body mass index (BMI) and waist size are good ways to tell if they are at a healthy weight.
[2] If you want to get to a healthy weight and stay there, a healthy lifestyle will work better than dieting. Reaching a certain number on the scale is not as important as having a healthy lifestyle.
[3] Staying at a healthy weight is one of the best things you can do for your health. It can help prevent serious problems, including: heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes and sleep apnea.
[4] But weight is only _________. Even if you carry some extra weight, eating healthy foods and being more active can help you feel better, have more energy, and lower your risk for disease
[5] If you decide that you do need to make some changes, here are three steps to reach a healthy weight:
[6] Improve your eating habits. Do it slowly. You may be tempted to do a diet overhaul and change everything about the way you eat. But you will be more successful at staying with the changes you make if you pick just one eating habit at a time to work on.
[7] Get moving: Try to make physical activity a regular part of your day, just like brushing your teeth.
[8] Changing your thinking. Our thoughts have a lot to do with how we feel and what we do. If you can stop your brain from telling you discouraging things and have it start encouraging you instead, you may be surprised at how much healthier you’ll be in mind and body.

I have a friend named John Roberts who owns a horse ranch (牧马场)in San Ysidro. The last time I was there he shared a story with me. “It is a story about a young man who was the son of an itinerant horse trainer. When he was a senior,he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up.”
That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings, the stables and the track.
“The next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, ‘See me after class.’”
“The boy went to see the teacher after class and asked, ‘Why did I receive an F?’”
“The teacher said, ‘This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you. You have no money. You come from an itinerant family. You have no resources. Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. You have to buy the land. You have to pay for the original breeding stock and later you’ll have to pay large stud fees. There‘s no way you could ever do it.’ Then the teacher added, ‘If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will reconsider your grade.’”
“The boy went home and asked his father what he should do. His father said, ‘Look, son, you have to make up your own mind on this. However, I think it is a very important decision for you.’”
“Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy turned in the same paper, making no changes at all. He stated, ‘You can keep the F and I’ll keep my dream.‘”
John continued, “I tell you this story because you are sitting in the middle of my 200-acre horse ranch. I still have that school paper framed over the fireplace.” He added, “If I had changed my paper at that time, maybe we would not have the chance to be here talking about the dreams .”
小题1:What was the boy’s goal described in his seven-page paper? (No more than 6 words)
小题2:Why did the teacher give him a F”?                    (No more than 14 words)

In 1998, World Cup Football Match held in France took up a new rule. Instead of the usual black and white ball, a colorful ball was used in the game. The new ball was made up of 32 pieces of three colors: red, blue and white. Interestingly enough, the French national flag happened to be in three colors, too. Besides, 32 teams took part in the coming World Cup. But early football was made up of eight pieces of leather. As time went by, more pieces of leather were used, from 12 pieces to 18 to 26 and then to 32 now.
About three million such new footballs were made. And then some players were playing the new ball in their training. The makers have warned the goalkeeper that the new ball flies in a direct line at a fast speed.
After trying the ball for some time, a footballer said that the ball was quite different from the traditional black and white one, and that the goalkeeper would find it harder to catch them. Another footballer said that there would be more goals. "For the player on the ground, the new ball is easier to control as it flies. A good player can shoot in more goals." he said.

You will probably try harder to get more sleep once you see how much better you feel with even 30 minutes more sleep.
Getting more sleep is sometimes merely a matter of scheduling. In the next couple of weeks, try to get rid of one or two things from your morning and evening routine. If morning is your downfall, shift(转移) some of your morning routines to the night before or putting something off until your break at lunch. If late afternoon and night are your downfalls, do the same.
You don’t really need to watch the news. It’s depressing. If something important happens today, you will find out tomorrow at work. At least skip(略过) the weather. Right after dinner, go to a major search engine, and type in “national weather” and the name of your town. You will see a two-line weather report from the National Weather Service. This will save you several minutes of watching the weather on television.
If reading helps you, take a boring book or magazine to bed with you. Paperbacks(平装本) are not as heavy and are easier to read in bed.
If you have a partner or roommate, maybe you can take turns with a neck and shoulder massage at night instead of television.
Make sure you are ready for sleep when you go to bed. __________ such as televisions, computers, and video games wake us up. Avoid them for at least an hour before you plan to go to bed.
小题1:What is the best title of the passage? (Please answer within 10 words.)
小题2:Please fill in the blank in the last paragraph with proper words or phrases to complete the sentence. (Please answer within 5 words.)
小题3:Which sentence in the passage can be replaced by the following one?
Often, sleeping more depends on how you manage your time.
小题4:Translate the underlined sentence in the fourth paragraph into Chinese.
小题5:As a senior student, how can you make sure you get enough sleep?  (Please answer within  30 words.)

When most people travel, they spend some time booking hotel rooms. However, my friend Ashley and I were not like most people many years ago. We decided that backpacking through Ireland would be more fun if we “winged it”.
Winging it, of course, meant that we’d each buy a one-way ticket to Dublin, and give ourselves ten days to get back to Bath, England, where we were enrolled in a study-abroad program. The plan was to visit Dublin, Galway, Cong, and finally end things in Belfast, where we figured we could catch a flight back to England.
Unfortunately, Ireland had other plans for us, as nothing worked out the way in which we thought it would. After getting stuck in Galway and Cong for about seven days, we finally managed to take a bus trip from Cong to Belfast. The twelve-hour bus ride started at ten in the morning, which meant that we’d arrive in the heart of Belfast at around ten at night. Of course, like all transport, the bus ran late, and we ended up in Belfast at around eleven-thirty at night. As there were a ton of hotels around the area where it dropped us off, we weren’t too worried about finding a hotel room. But hotel after hotel turned us down.
After the third hotel turned us down and the fourth one was locked up for the night, Ashley and I started to realize that we had to spend a long night sleeping on a city bench. Like militant soldiers, we slept in turn as we were worried we would get robbed. The system worked, as we were able to stay safe while catching as much sleep as we could on the bench.
From this experience, I really learnt a good lesson.
小题1:Why did the author and his friend decide to wing it when they went to travel in Ireland? (No more than 8 words)

[1]Every year there are changes in climate in different parts of the world. Some of these changes are due to natural causes. However, some climate changes are caused by air pollution and there changes may increase.
[2]If the pollution affects the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, the results are likely to be serious. Carbon dioxide takes up only a small part of the atmosphere. But it performs an important function in keeping the balance between radiation from the sun entering the atmosphere and radiation leaving the Earth. Some radiation is absorbed by the Earth and some is radiated back into the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere prevent some radiation from leaving the atmosphere. Thus the heat remains in the atmosphere and carbon dioxide help to prevent the temperature.
[3]If the proportion of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is increased as a result of air pollution, the temperature of the atmosphere may rise. This might cause the ice in the North Pole to melt. If this happened, the sea level could rise and parts of Earth would be flooded. This happening is not quite likely but the possibility exists.
[4]There is also a fairly strong possibility that the level of dust in the atmosphere will rise _____________________ . This dust pollution from industry will reflect sunlight back into space. If this happens, less sunlight will reach the Earth and the temperature will fall.
[5]Another danger comes from the destruction of the Earth’s vegetation such as the forests of Brazil, which are being cleared away for farmland and cities. Trees use carbon dioxide and the destruction may disturb the balance of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Though I don’t have much money, I always try to think positively. However, sometimes, I also feel depressed and sad when I think how others have more than me, so I hate thinking about money. When I was younger, I always wondered why money was so important. But as I get older, of course that changes.
Last night, on my way home I stopped by to buy some hamburgers at a fast food restaurant. On my way in, a homeless man came over and asked, “Do you have any bottles lying around?” I knew he would recycle them for a few cents, but I had none. And again he asked, “Can you spare some change?” I smiled and said, “Sorry, I don’t.” He was respectful, saying, “OK, thank you.” Though he didn’t have anything, he was still in good spirits.
I went in and ate my meal, but I wondered if he was hungry, thinking if I should buy him something or not. Only after I finished my meal did I decide to order another one for him. At this point I didn't know if he was still around, but I tried anyway. At the counter I ordered a hamburger and also a hot chocolate, for it was cold outside. As I waited, I noticed the homeless man standing beside me with a tray(盘子)full of a few coins. I looked at him and smiled, “The hamburger and this hot chocolate are for you.” He replied like a gentleman, “Thank you. That’s very kind of you.”
No matter how hard your life is, there are always those whose life is harder. And it's not always about happiness, but it’s about love. If you love someone, you’ll give them what they deserve because the greatest thing you can give is love.
