Recently the reporters of CCTV 11 made a random survey in some big cities in China among the pedestrians on the correct spelling of some most commonly used Chinese characters, the result of which was completely beyond their expectations.

The expression they used was “embarrass”, which is pronounced in Chinese “ganga”. First, they asked eight students from Grades 4 to 6 in a famous primary school in Beijing, and half of them could write them correctly. Later they came to a secondary school and asked eight students to do the same thing, but this time only three of whom wrote the two characters correctly. What’s more surprising was that they asked five persons who had got master’s or doctor’s degrees to write the same characters, but only two of them could write them correctly. The result was not only terrific but ironic as well. Is it too difficult? Absolutely not!

This is a real story about the bravery(勇气) and creativity(创造力) of a young painter, Jim. Determined(决心) to be an artist, Jim went to France to surround himself with beauty and inspiration. He paints every day. He visited museums, traveled to picturesque(独特的)places, bravely spoke to everyone he met, and showed his works to anyone who would look at it. One afternoon, he had a conversation at a cafe with a group of charming(迷人的) young people, who turned out to(原来是) be some fancy nobles(贵族). They took a liking to Jim and invited(邀请) him to a party that weekend in a castle(城堡) in the Loire Valley. They said this was going to be the party of the year. It would be attended(参加)by the rich and famous(名人)and by several crowned heads of Europe (欧洲的首脑). Best of all, it was a masquerade ball(化装舞会), where nobody would hesitate(犹豫)in their spending on the costumes(服饰). “Dress up”, they said, “ and join us!”

Excited, Jim worked all week on a costume that he was certain would be highly impressive. He held back on neither the details nor the imagination of this creation. Then he rented a car and drove three hours to the castle(城堡). He changed into his costume in the car and went up the castle steps. Jim entered(进入) the ballroom(宴会厅).

Upon arrival(到达时), he immediately realized his mistake . This was a costume party, his new friends had not misled(误导) him, but he had missed one detail(细节) in translation: This was a themed(以......为主题的) costume party. The theme was “ a medieval(中世纪的) court” and Jim was dressed as a lobster(龙虾).

All around him, the wealthy and beautiful were dressed in fancy clothes, wearing sparkling jewel(璀璨的珠宝). Jim, on the other hand, was wearing a red coat, red tights, and red ballet slippers(芭蕾舞鞋). Also, his face painted red. And he was the only American in the room, too.

Our family made a decision to host an exchange student at the beginning of this month. I really wanted to host an exchange student, but I knew my husband wouldn’t agree because of our financial situation. I spent a couple of days reading about the exchange program and trying to see how much money would be involved in this process. I found out that the cost wouldn’t be that much. Finally, my husband agreed.

The next step in the process was to decide on an exchange student. The first thing my husband said when we discussed this was that it would have to be a girl. I completely understood because we have two young girls. Our daughters are 4 years old and 7 years old.

We were looking for someone that would coincide withour family. We ended up narrowing it down to 5 girls, but one of these girls just stood out to us. Her name was Victoria. She not only was involved in sports, but also she seemed very outgoing. After a couple of days, we made our final decision on that girl that stood out to us all along.

We had the interview with a local coordinator who had to check out the house to make sure it was suitable for another child to stay in. Thankfully, after some hard work from my husband and me, we made a great impression at the interview.

Finally, the Tuesday after the interview, I received an email with a 15-page profile with our exchange student’s information. I received the email when I was with a close friend of mine and we talked about what I should say to her in the first email I write to her. I was so nervous!

Now, we have been having so much fun exchanging email and we both are very excited about her arrival next month..

              (1) Why didn’t the author’s husband agree on the idea of hosting an exchange student at first?(no more than 8 words)

              (2) What does the underlined phrase “ coincide with” in Paragraph 3 mean?(no more than 3 words)

              (3) What was the purpose of the coordinator’s checking out the house?(no more than 10 words)

              (4) What was the purpose of the coordinator’s checking out the house?(no more than 10 words)

              (5) In your opinion , what are the advantages of hosting an exchange student?(no more than 20 words)

              请阅读下面短文,并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。

“Artificial intelligence(AI) will understand senses, such as vision and feelings, better than human beings. Its application in daily life such as autonomous driving will improve the world,” Zuckerberg said at the China Development Forum in Beijing.

              Cdogg (Canada)

AI will not fully replace humans. AI may take away some human jobs. For example, robots are already making our cars, vacuuming our floors and serving our food. However, there will always be jobs that only humans can do; artificial intelligence has its limits. It will never completely replace the need for qualified humans in the labor force. Furthermore, humans will always be needed to design new artificial intelligence.

              Seneca (Australia)

It’s only a matter of time. We have discovered no upper limit to the processing and problem-solving capabilities of machine intelligence. Given the current rate of development of computer technology, I think it reasonable to expect the arrival of machine intelligence as good as humans in the next 50 years.

              Samlam (China)

I think it will steal jobs from us. As we already know, many people do not like jobs that are dangerous, tough and so on. But some people with poor education might be interested in them when they find it hard to look for a better job. When jobs like waiters or waitresses are taken by robots, when jobs like baby-sitters are taken by robots, many people will lose their jobs.

On Thanksgiving, Scott Macaulay is preparing a full turkey dinner for a whole bunch  of people he’s never met. His 70guests----elderly people, low-income people, at-risk teens, and others—have one detail in common: without Macaulay, they’d be alone on Thanksgiving.

“What I do isn’t a big deal, really,” the 52-year-old said. “I just cook some food.”

Macaulay’s unconventional Thanksgiving tradition began in 1985, right around the time his parents decided to get divorced. The holidays got messy that year, and Macaulay, who was 24 at the time, sensed he’d be spending Thanksgiving alone. It was a terrible feeling.

“Thanksgiving isn’t about fireworks(烟火) or band concerts,” he said. “It’s a celebration around a table with food. It’s not fun to do that by yourself.”

Macaulay placed an ad in his local paper with a simple message: If people thought they might be alone on Thanksgiving, they could give Macaulay a call.

A few people showed up at Macaulay’s place that first year. It was nice. So he placed another ad the following year, and the year after that.

In recent years, Macaulay has been hosting his Thanksgiving dinners at local churches with lots of space. He still buys and prepares all the food himself and spends about 40 hours putting the whole affair together. On Thanksgiving Day, he runs around nonstop from about5a.m. to 8p.m. Macaulay said he’d love to see other people hold similar dinners all over the country. “I think someone in every town should do this,” he said, “so nobody has to be alone.”

连续几天(for days on end),成百万的人们涌上街头观看穿着(dress up in)华丽服装(fancy costume)的桑巴舞者表演热情的桑巴舞蹈。第一届里约狂欢节可追溯到(date back to)1823年。今天,里约狂欢节每年会吸引来自世界各地的超过两百万的游客。

In a recent business magazine article, a president said, laughter in the workplace is a waste of time. This is a place to do business, not to laugh, some researchers, however, disagree with his words. As scientists have learned more about the brain, they’ve discovered that smiles and laughter stimulate the brain, which can help increase happiness and reduce pain.

Why do we need laughter in our lives? Laughter is a powerful tool for our health. In a number of studies that were carried out, it was shown that people who are more humorous have stronger immune systems(免疫系统)while people who feel stressed have weaker immune systems. Humor can help make your immune systems stronger.

Here are some tips to add more humor to your life:

Laugh at yourself. Don’t take yourself too seriously. Have a positive attitude towards yourself and your worries will become lighter too.

Don’t worry why people laugh---just appreciate it. Be funny. Look for the humorous side of and otherwise difficult situation.

Prepare a fist-aid laughter source. This could include books, cartoons, CDs, or videos.

Write down the amusing things that happen and save them for a sad day.

Be open to silly things. Humor is the child within yourself.

Laugh with others for what they do, rather than what they are.

Research has shown that laughter is indeed the best medicine, so make time for humor now.

              (1) What is the best title for this passage? (Within 8 words)

              (2) List three suggestions that might help you add humor to your life according to the passage. (Within 15 words)

              (3) According to the passage, how do people benefit from laughter? (Within 10 words)

              (4) Please explain the underlined part “Have a positive attitude” in English. (Within 6 words)

              (5) What do you think of laughter, useful or not? Why? (Within 15 words)

When Dan Shaw gets up from the sofa in his home, Cuddles is never far away. When he wants to go outside, he doesn’t take Cuddles out for a walk—Cuddles takes him for a walk Cuddles is clearly no ordinary family pet. It is a two-foot-high miniature horse and serves as the guiding eyes of Shaw, who is blind.

Through training, Shaw and Cuddles learned to find their way on busy streets, step over curbs(便道沿儿)and find elevator buttons. Cuddles even demonstrated(显示)its ability to step in front of Shaw and block him, to prevent him from walking into a dangerous situation The little horse also expertly led Shaw through busy shopping malls. They got along without any difficulties. Now Shaw is confident that Cuddles will change his life for the better.

              阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

My mom only had one eye. I hated her. She was such an embarrassment. My mom ran a tiny shop at a flea market near my school and collected second-hands to sell for the money we needed.

Once during elementary school, it was a field day, and my mom came. I was so embarrassed and wondered how could she do this to me? There were so many people around! After throwing her a hateful look, I ignored her and ran out. The next day at school, my schoolmates asked me “Your mom only has one eye?" and they taunted (奚落) me.
I was so angry with my mom and wished that she would just disappear from this world. I said sharply to my mom, "Why donˈt you have the other eye?! If youˈre only gonna make me a laughingstock(笑柄), why donˈt you just disappear? “My mom did not respond. I guess I felt a little bad, but at the same time, it felt so good to have said what I wanted to say out of anger. Maybe it was because my mom hadnˈt punished me, but I didnˈt think that I had hurt her feelings very badly.
All I was thinking was to get away from my one-eye mom and our desperate poverty. I told myself that I would become successful in the near future, so I studied very hard. Finally to my great satisfaction, I got accepted by the Seoul University which I had been longing for.

Then I got married there. I bought a house of my own. Then I had kids, too. I enjoy the life there because it’s a place that doesn’t remind me of my past. This kind of happiness was getting bigger and bigger, until one day someone knocked at my door. It was my mom! When she stood by the door. My little son ran away, scared of my mom’s eye and my daughter screamed. I yelled at her for coming over uninvited, “Who are you? I don’t know you! How dare you come to my house and scare my children!”
