    Her name was Mrs． Thompson． And as she stood in front of the 5th grade class on the very first day she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same． But that was impossible because there in the front row was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard． Mrs． Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he didn't play well with the other children， that his clothes were messy and that he constantly needed a bath． She paid no attention to Teddy．
    However， when she read his file， she was in surprise． Teddy's first grade teacher wrote， "Teddy is a bright child with a ready laugh． He does his work neatly and has good manners…he is a joy to be around．" His second grade teacher wrote， "Teddy is an excellent student， well liked by his classmates． But he is troubled because his mother has a deadly illness and life at home must be a struggle．" His third grade teacher wrote， "His mother's death has been hard on him． He tried to do his best but his father doesn't show much interest．" Teddy's fourth grade teacher wrote， "Teddy is withdrawn and doesn't show much interest in school． He doesn't have many friends and sometimes sleeps in class．" By now， Mrs． Thompson realized the problem and she was ashamed of herself． She thought that she could make a difference．
    She felt even worse when her students brought her Christmas presents， wrapped in beautiful paper and tied with pretty ribbons， except for Teddy's． His present was clumsily wrapped in the heavy， brown paper that he got from a grocery bag． Mrs． Thompson opened it in the middle of the other presents． Some of the children stared to laugh when she found a stone bracelet（手镯）with some of the stones missing， and a bottle that was one-quarter full of perfume．

2． "Ouch!" I howled in pain as I dropped the hammer onto my foot． I felt foolish．

    "Hello!" I said， in English． "Can you help us？" I pointed to the wheel．
    She stared at it， and then made a gesture to follow her back to the jungle． George and I looked at each other， and then set off after her．
    Soon we came to a tent under some trees． It had a firm framework of wooden poles， like the one the woman was carrying， covered with heavy cloth， and fastened with rope made of some kind of loose plant fiber． All round were corn plants． It was harvest time for the grain， and a spade， a fork and other tools were lying on the ground． Nearby were some chicks and a rooster， and a pig tied to a post．
    The woman folded back a cloth and invited us in． My eyes had to adjust to the darkness inside． The tent was furnished with a few mats on the floor， and a low table with a teapot． She picked up a photo and showed it to us． Was it her husband？ The man in the photo was bare to the waist． He looked much too young． She was probably a widow （寡妇）． Maybe her son or her nephew？
Our hostess poured some tea， and watched smiling as we drank．
    "Say something，" said George．

8． Directions： Please read the following passage and write a summary of it in no more than 60 words． Use your own words as far as possible．
    A large source of rubbish is packaging material． It often makes up more than 30 percent of the total． To understand why this is true， think of the packaging commonly used for a simple product， such as toothpaste． The packaging includes not only the tube for the toothpaste， but also the box for the tube． This box is put into a plastic wrapper． Then， the boxes are transported in a cardboard container．
    Most packaging material ends up in a landfill after it is thrown away． Though necessary， landfills take up valuable space， often stink（发出恶臭）， and can leak harmful substances into the soil． Landfills not included， the production of packaging material itself is a major source of air and water pollution．
    People are now trying to solve the problems caused by packaging materials． In 1991， Germany took the lead by requiring companies to recycle the packaging used for their goods． To do this， the companies set up recycling bins in every neighborhood． Consumers now separate their rubbish into three categories-metal， plastic and paper cartons． They then put it into the appropriate bin． The rubbish sorted， it is transported to a recycling company for processing．
    The programme worked well at first． However， the amount of rubbish has begun to increase again． One reason for this is that many consumers no longer reduce waste because they think the problem is solved． It seems that to properly deal with the problem of rubbish， everyone must remain alert and do their part．
