A generation ago young people longed to become lawyers and doctors. Now they desire to be the next Oscar winner or famous pop star. But one university psychologist has pointed out that this is damaging our self-image and sense of self-worth. Over recent years people around the world have been suffering from an increasing fear of their own “insignificance”, according to Dr. Strenger of Tel Aviv University.

He began a project on the phenomenon 10 years ago, after noticing an increase of fear in his own patients. His findings note hundreds of research projects that have recorded an unprecedented (前所未有) increase in levels of anxiety and depression. By using a wide-ranging framework Dr. Strenger thinks he has given the accurate cause. “The impact of the global entertainment network on the individual is to blame,” he said. “A new species—global man—is born and we are defined by our close connection to the global entertainment network, which has turned ranking and evaluating people according to wealth and fame into an obsession (狂热).”

As humans we naturally measure ourselves by those around us, but now we live in a “global village” where we are comparing ourselves with the most “significant” people in the world - and finding ourselves not good enough. Today, even high achievers constantly fear that they are insignificant when they compare themselves to success stories in the media. “This creates highly unstable personality and an unstable society,” Dr. Strenger said.

Dr. Strenger says people should stop measuring their achievement through the cultural fantasies of rich and famous people. The remedy (治疗方法) is a process that he calls “active self-acceptance” through a continuing search for self-knowledge through life. The fear of insignificance can only be overcome through strong individual and cultural identity over and above measurable achievement. “People should invest time and thought in their personal growth from different aspects in the same way they invest in medical studies and law school,” Dr. Strenger advises.

              (1) What can be known about the “global men”?

              A. They expect something unrealistic.
              B. They want to be a leader overnight.

              C. They are in a bad mood every day.
              D. They are independent of global network.

              (2) According to Dr. Strenger, what leads people to feel insignificant?

              A. Inside anxiety.
              B. Outer pressure.

              C. Inner expectation.
              D. Outside environment.

              (3) How should we remove the fear of “insignificance”?

              A. We stay away from famous people.
              B. We learn from successful people around.

              C. We try to make our dreams come true.
              D. We take time to improve ourselves.

              (4) For what purpose is the passage written?

              A. To present and advertise.
              B. To entertain and amuse.

              C. To compare and conclude.
              D. To criticize and advise.

When people introduce themselves, I always hear them say “I’m just a housewife”. I don’t understand why their introduction is always filled with regret and self-pity. Is it really a shame to be a housewife? Is it really embarrassing (尴尬的) when you choose not to work outside and instead choose to work in your home?

How could you be “just a housewife” when the basic social unit of society depends on you and your service? A housewife works for the longest hour, supporting your husband, child studies, caring for elders, managing finances, paying bills, grocery shopping, cooking according to individual taste, cleaning, etc. A housewife could be anyone: daughter, wife, mother, teacher, financial advisor, fashion designer and nurse, gardener, driver, cook, and so on. Don’t think you are not being paid for it. You get the reward that no money can offer—the love and affection of your family, their trust for you, a happy home and your own satisfaction.

It is you who choose to be in this occupation, willingly or for any other reason. After a busy day, all wait to return to the comfortable home set by you. They know you will be there to take in all their stress and tiredness and relax them. Would the life have been the same if you had been working outside to earn some money? Would you along with your family have been able to buy all the content in life that you are enjoying now with that money?

Respect yourself for what you are. Introduce yourself to the world with the same dignity (尊严). The world understands the importance of your job; it’s time to make them accept it. Introduce yourself with pride and with twinkle in your eyes “I am a housewife”. Kick that “just” out.

              (1) How do people feel when they say “I’m just a housewife”?

              A. Satisfied. B. Proud. C. Regretful. D. Painful.

              (2) Listing the housewife’s duties, the author implies a housewife _______.

              A. usually leads a terrible life

              B. has more abilities than her husband

              C. does not always get her reward

              D. makes a great contribution to the family

              (3) If a housewife worked outside, she would _______.

              A. have the same life like before

              B. set a comfortable home for her family

              C. absorb her family’s stress

              D. lose the content that she is enjoying

              (4) What is the author’s attitude toward housewives?

              A. Supportive. B. Doubtful.
              C. Opposed (反对的). D. Unconcerned.

              Dear editor,

You can find language pollution whenever you open a newspaper or turn on your TV set, listen to a popular song at various advertisements. Language pollution exists almost everywhere and can be seen in the following places:

1,Chinese characters are written in the complex (复杂的 ) form. Although simplified(简化的) Chinese characters were accepted for use many years ago, it seems that more and more people like Chinese characters written in the complex form.

2, Many goods are produced in China but carry foreign names, which sound strange and have no meaning at all.

3,Words and expressions being used have a bad meaning. "Ba"(霸), which means bully in Chinese, is one example. Now there are a lot of goods, restaurants, even factories or firms, with "Ba" in their names.

4,There are too many incorrect grammatical expressions. Some films have strange names and incorrect grammatical structures. "Ai ni mei shang liangˈ, which means "I love you without consulting", is grammatically incorrect and this kind of expression is now becoming popular.

Some language experts point out that language pollution must be done away with, which is an idea shared by myself and many others.

With more and more cars on the road, traffic jams are inevitable. Traffic jams can lead to increased accidents as there are more cars, with more people trying to get to their destination, all the while getting worse. Although it’s impossible to avoid traffic jams altogether, there are some tips you can follow to reduce the amount of time on the road.

Check for traffic jams before you leave. You can listen to the radio for traffic news, or check on the Internet to get up-to-minute information on traffic. If the route you want to take is heavy with traffic, you can choose another.

Look for a different route all the time. Most traffic jams happen on busy roads. Using country roads could see you avoiding a lot of traffic. Although the distance you may have to travel is further, it can work out quicker.

Set your car radio to receive traffic news. Many a car is equipped with a radio system by which you can hear the traffic channel. This way you can get the latest traffic information and change your journey if necessary.

Try traveling at different time. Most traffic jams usually occur during rush hour, so try to avoid this time period if possible. Some jobs offer flexible working hours so that you can travel to work outside of rush hour. Some jobs even allow you to work at home so as to avoid moving altogether. Ask your manager to see what you can do if traffic is a problem for you.

Use public transport. The easiest way to avoid traffic jams is to take buses or the underground instead of driving your own car. Not only will you avoid traffic jams but you will most likely be saving money as the cost of motoring rises.

              (1) The underlined word “inevitable” in Paragraph 1 probably means ________.

              A. hard to accept
              B. impossible to avoid

              C. getting less serious
              D. seen everywhere

              (2) The author wrote the text in order to ________.

              A. tell us how to save time on the road
              B. tell us what we can do on the road

              C. explain why there are traffic jams
              D. tell us the effects of traffic jams

              (3) To get the latest traffic information, you could do the following EXCEPT ________.

              A. surfing the Internet
              B. listening to the traffic channel

              C. listening to the radio for traffic news
              D. turning to other drivers for information

Like all big cities, Paris has a traffic problem: lots of cars, lots of traffic jams and lots of pollution from exhaust fumes (废气). So the city began a scheme (计划) to improve the situation.

Under the Velib scheme (‘Velib’ comes from vélo liberté, or ‘bicycle freedom’) people can take a bicycle, use it for as long as they want, and then leave it at the same or another bicycle station. The first half-hour on the bike is free, but if you don’t return it after 30 minutes, you have to pay. But it’s only −1 aday or −29 ayear! The bicycles are heavy (25 kg), and they are all grey and have baskets. There are about 20,000 of them in the city, and around 1,450 bicycle stations. So there are a lot more Velib stations than the 298 subway stations!

Paris is not the first city to have a scheme like this. But not everybody thinks it’s a great idea. One Parisian said, “These bicycles are only for short journeys. If people want to travel across the city, they won’t use a bicycle — they’ll still use their cars.”

A city spokesman said, “The bicycle scheme won’t solve all our traffic problems, of course. But it might help reduce air pollution. Traffic, together with factory fumes, is a big problem. There aren’t any simple answers to traffic problems and pollution in cities. But unless we do something now, there will be more traffic jams and temperatures will continue to rise, so the problems in our environment will get worse. The bikes might help people to lead a healthier life, too.”

              (1) What can we learn about the Velib scheme?
              A. Its bikes have no baskets.
              B. Its bikes are light and colorful.
              C. It aims to make traveling easier.
              D. It owns more stations than the subway.
              (2) If you use a Velib for 1 hour, you should pay _____.
              A. −1      B. −30       C. −29          D. no money
              (3) Why do some people disagree with the Velib scheme?
              A. The cost is rather high.
              B. It’s hard to find a Velib station.
              C. It’s not suitable for a long journey.
              D. The distance between two Velib stations is long.
              (4) What’s the city spokesman’s attitude towards the bicycle scheme?
              A. Positive.   B. Doubtful.
              C. Uncaring.    D. Worried.

To have a second child or not, this is a question.

A concern about only one child is whether one child necessarily means a lonely child. Many parents of only child feel guilty of their decision to have only one child. There are no other children in the family for the child to associate with, which may lead to the child feeing lonely at times.

Another common argument against having just one child may be more spoiled than one with siblings. Many people believe that a single child will not have learned to negotiate with others, and respect the give-and-take involved in many relationships. Some think this may leave the child less capable of interacting well with people his or her own age.

Despite these arguments, the number of parents choosing to have only one child is increasing in the world. For some single-child parents, the pressures of devoting time and energy to a second child can result in them selecting have no more children. For other parents, the financial burden of having a second child may be the major consideration. Another important consideration is the increasing age at which women give birth to children.

Advocates of single-child families argue that there are advantages for the child as well as the parents. With just one child, the parents can give, and the child can receive, more quality time and attention.

However, there is no simple answer to the question of whether or not to have a second child. The circumstances affecting each set of parents are unique. The important thing, in the end, is to make a decision that both the wife and the husband feel confident about.

When we want to tell other people what we think, we can do it with the help of words. We can also do it in many other ways, too. Sometimes we move our heads up and down when we want to say “yes”, and we shake our heads when we want to say “no”. Some people can’t hear or speak. They talk with the help of gestures(手势).People from other countries often have to do it if they don’t know your language.

Here is a story. An American was once having his holiday inItaly, but he could not speak Italian. One day he went to a restaurant and sat down at a table. When the waiter came, the American opened his mouth, put his fingers in it and took them out again. In this way he wanted to say “Bring me something to eat”. The waiter soon brought him a cup of tea. The American shook his head and the waiter understood that he didn’t want tea. So he took it away and brought him a glass of milk. The American shook his head again. He was very hungry now and looked sad. He was just going to leave the restaurant when another man came in. When this man saw the waiter, he put his hands on his stomach(胃). In a few minutes there was a large plate of bread and meat on the table in front of him.

              (1) Sometimes people move their heads______when they want to say “yes”.

              A. right and left B. fast and slow

              C. hard and easy      D. up and down

              (2) If people want to say______, they may shake their heads.

              A. ” no” B. “yes” C. “words” D. “OK”

              (3) The American wanted____.

              A. to drink a cup of tea B. to go to bed

              C. to have some food D. to talk with the waiter

              (4) If people want the waiter to bring them something____, theyd better put their hands on their stomach.

              A. to drink      B. to write
              C. to speak      D. to eat
            • 8. The spread of Western eating habits around the world is bad for human health and the  environment. These findings come from a new report in the journal Nature.
David Tillman, a professor of ecology at the University of Minnesota, America, examined  information from 100 countries to identify what people ate and how diet affected health. He noted a movement beginning in the 1960s.He found that as nations industrialized(工业化), population increased and earnings rose, more people began to adopt what has been called the Western diet.
The Western diet is high in sugar, fat, oil and meat.By eating these foods, people began to get fatter and sicker.David Tillman says overweight people are at greater risk for non-infectious diseases like diabetes(耱尿病) and heart disease.
Unfortunately when people become industrialized, if they adopt this Western diet, they are going to have these health problems, especially in developing countries in Asia.China is an example where the number of diabetes cases has been jumping from less than one percent to 10 percent of the population as they began to industrialize over a 20-year period. And that is happening all across the world, in Mexico, in Nigeria and so on.
And, a diet bad for human beings, is also bad for the environment. As the world's population grows, more forests and tropical(熟带的) areas will become farmland for crops or  grasslands for cattle. We are likely to have more greenhouse gas in the future from agriculture than that coming out of all forms of transportation right now.
Mr.Tillman calls the link between diet, the environment and human health, "a dilemma":  a problem offering a difficult choice. He says one possible solution is leaving the Western diet behind.

Perhaps you think you could easily add to your happiness with more money. Strange as it may seem, if you’re unsatisfied, the issue is not a lack of means(方式) to meet your desires but a lack of desires — not that you cannot satisfy your tastes but that you don’t have enough tastes.

Real riches consist of well-developed and hearty capacities(能力) to enjoy life. Most people are already swamped(淹没) with things. They eat, wear, go and talk too much. They live in too big a house with too many rooms, yet their house of life is a hut.

Your house of life ought to be a mansion(豪宅) , a royal palace. Every new taste, every additional interest, every fresh enthusiasm(热心,热情) adds a room. Here are several rooms your house of life should have.

Art should be a desire for you to develop simply because the world is full of beautiful things. If you only understood how to enjoy them and feed your spirit on them, they would make you as happy as to find plenty of hamburgers and eggs when you’re hungry.

Literature, classic literature, is a beautiful, richly furnished room where you might find many an hour of rest and refreshment. To gain that love would go toward making you a rich person, for a rich person is not someone who has a library but someone who likes a library.

Music like Mozart’s and Bach’s shouldn’t be absent. Real riches are of the spirit. And when you’ve brought that spirit up to where classical music feeds it and makes you a little drunk, you have increased your thrills and bettered them. And life is a matter of thrills.

Sports, without which you remain poor, mean a lot in life. No matter who you are, you would be more human, and your house of life would be better supported against the bad days, if you could, and did, played a bit.

Whatever rooms you might add to your house of life, the secret of enjoying life is to keep adding.

Women make better drivers than men for many reasons. Why is that, do you suppose? Wouldn’t you think that competing at who has better driving abilities is pointless? If you ask me, I’d like to say, men know that women are better drivers but do not have the courage to admit the truth — women are queens of the road.

Unlike men, women stop for directions when they have no idea as to where they are going. We don’t drive around for hours pointlessly wasting a tank of gas only to find ourselves heading in the wrong direction. Have you ever be in a car with a man who is lost? He tells you to shut up when you begin to open your mouth. And every five minutes or so he takes a turn going forty-five miles per hour only to find out he’s made another wrong turn.

Speeding is what men do best on the road. Traffic is not a race. There is a reason why men get more speeding tickets than women. Not because we trick to get out of tickets but only because we don’t get pulled over as frequently. We don’t speed. We have more intelligence than senselessly to put our own lives as well as the lives of others in danger.

My largest issue with male drivers is how a majority of them drive with one hand on the wheel and the other hand doing only God knows what. The seat is backed as far as possible, and they’re totally lost into loud music beyond a necessary level. You don’t ever see women driving like that.

I feel that the above evidence more than proves my points that women are not only better drivers but also safer drivers than men. We women rule the road. Oh, and men, if you want to continue criticizing (批评) women for being bad drivers, bring it on.
