            • 1. It was at her company's annual picnic that my mother met my father, and he walked her home. The next week, from his home in Chicago,he sent her a post card:Remember me please.Do be calling you one of these days.--David.
She still has that post card.I am not sure what made her save.Though he already had his heart set on her,she hadn't chosen him yet,at least not consciously.
My father,a salesman for a big electronics company, often told us while we were growing up,it was blind luck that he was at the picnic that day.He was in town to meet with clients and happened to stop by the branch office that Saturday morning to make a call.It was the manager of a local radio station where my mother worked as a writer."Dave!Glad you're in town!"he said, and invited him to come right over to their annual picnic.Later my mother dated him when he was in town.Eventually, one night a few months later, she woke her mother and told her she was going to marry Dave.A few months after the wedding,my father was transferred east. They settled in New York,in the house where I grew up.
Sometimes I think how time gets us together and puts us in a certain place where we're faced with one option or another. We leave behind while others live by the choice we made.We could have lived full of different passions and joys, different problems and disappointments.Sometimes, particularly when I came home late to a sleeping house,my husband and daughter curled around each other.I think about the lives we would not have had if choices had brought us to a different place. And I tremble at the thought that I might have missed this life, this man, this child, this love.

            • 2. Tyler was born infected with HIV and his mother was also infected. From the very beginning of his life,he was dependent on medications (药物) to enable him to survive. When he was five,he had a tube surgically(外科手术上) inserted in a vein(静脉) in his chest. This tube was connected to a pump, which he carried in a small backpack on his back.Medications were connected to this pump and were continuously supplied through this tube to his bloodstream. At times,he also needed supplemented oxygen to support his breathing.
Tyler wasn't willing to give up one single moment of his childhood to this deadly disease. It was not unusual to find him playing and racing around his backyard, wearing his backpack and dragging his tank of oxygen behind him in his little wagon(小推车).All of us who knew Tyler were amazed at his pure joy in being alive and the energy it gave him.Tyler's mom often made jokes on him by telling him that he moved so fast she needed to dress him in red. That way, when she peered through the window to check on him playing in the yard, she could quickly spot him.
This terrible disease eventually wore him down.He grew quite ill and, unfortunately,so did his HIV-infected mother. When it became clear that he wasn't going to survive,Tyler's mom talked to him about death. She comforted him by telling Tyler that she was dying too,and that she would be with him soon in heaven.
A few days before his death,Tyler beckoned(召唤) me over to his hospital bed and whispered,"I might die soon.I'm not scared. When I die, please dress me in red.Mom promised she's coming to heaven, too.I'll be playing when she gets there, and I want to make sure she can find me."

It's hard to find Alice Munro in the media.Even after she won the 2013Nobel Prize in Literature, the Canadian writer just appeared for a quick interview and then dropped out of sight. On Dec 29th,she still didn't seek the spotlight when she was named one of the five Women of the Year by the Financial Times.
In Munro's eyes, ordinary lives always hide larger dramas. So she records what we casually think of as the everyday actions of normal people. She often focuses on life in her hometown,a small village in Ontario which she is most familiar with. She writes about the ordinary things in the village-trees in the Ontario wilderness, poor country schools and long last illnesses.Above all,she talks about girls and women who have seemingly ordinary lives but struggle against daily misfortune.
She has a special talent for uncovering the extraordinary in the ordinary. These are ordinary people, ordinary stories, but she has the magic. Her precise language, depth of detail and the logic of her storytelling have made her stories inviting.
Runaway, one of Munro's representative works,is a good example of her writing style. One of the stories centers on the life of an ordinary woman Carla, who lives in a small Canadian town with her husband Clark. The story slowly forms a picture of Carla, trapped in a bad marriage, her unhappiness building into desperation until she decides to flee. The story of Carla is a story of the power and betrayals of love.It is about lost children and lost chances that we can all find in life. There is pain beneath the surface, like a needle in the heart.
Since she published her first collection of short stories in 1968,Munro has won many awards, with the Nobel Prize being her biggest honor. On Oct 10th,2013,the Nobel Prize committee named Munro the"master of the contemporary short story".

            • 4. I was five years old when my little brother,Murk, was born.Looking back at photos,I appeared so thrilled that he had finally arrived.I held and bathed him, smiling from cheek to check.I do not remember that feeling now.
Being the first child in the family,I was the one my parents tested their new parenting techniques on.I was their guinea pig.Mark was always the happy one,the joker, the one who won because of my battles with my parents. After too many fights,I declared war on Mark.We were now enemies. All l remember is being jealous of (妒忌) and angry with my innocent little brother.
Thus.I made his life a misery.I teased, tricked, embarrassed, and fought with him.often leaving him in floods of tears.
Our little sister was born when I was 11.and instantly she and Mark could not be separated. They pushed me aside. Was this because I was becoming a monster,or did I grow into an uglier green-eyed monster because they loved each other so much?
Thankfully,Mark quickly grew tall and strong, and our conflict looked more like a cold war than bloodshed (流血).It all ended suddenly when I went to study abroad. The hatred (仇恨) disappeared and love climbed in.
Despite all the abuse Mark suffered he has implied that he has forgiven me,or even that there is nothing to forgive, although I have never brought up the subject in too much detail.I would like to; however,it would be a selfish move to look for more forgiveness. But I prefer to remember the hurt.During all those wasted years,I should have been the loving sister, defending instead of attacking.

            • 5. After a terrible electrical accident, which caused him to become both blind and deaf, the whole world became completely dark and quiet for Robert Edwards for almost ten years. The loss of sight and hearing threw him into such sorrow that he tried a few times to put an end to his life. His family, especially his wife, did their best to tend and comfort him and finally he regained the will to live.
One hot summer afternoon,he was taking a walk with a stick near his house when a thunderstorm started all at once.He stood under a large tree to avoid getting wet,but he was struck by the lightning.Witnesses thought he was dead but he woke up some 20 minutes later lying face down in muddy water at the base of the tree.He was trembling badly, but when he opened his eyes,he could hardly believe what he saw:a plough and a wall. When Mrs Edwards came running up to him, shouting to their neighbors to call for help,he could see her and hear her voice for the first time in nearly ten years.
The news of Robert regaining his sight and hearing quickly spread, and many doctors came to examine him. Most of them said that he regained his sight and hearing from the shock he got from the lightning. However, none of them could give a convincing answer as to why this should have happened. The only reasonable explanation given by one doctor was that, since Robert lost his sight and hearing as a result of a sudden shock, perhaps, the only way for him to regain them was by another sudden shock.

A lady and her husband stepped off the train in Boston. They walked without an appointment into the outer office of Harvard's president. But they were stopped by his secretary and kept waiting. For hours, the secretary took no notice of them, hoping that the couple would finally become disappointed and go away. But they didn't.The secretary finally decided to disturb the president, though unwillingly.
A few minutes later, the president walked towards the couple with a cold face. The lady told him,"We had a son that attended Harvard for one year.He loved Harvard. He was happy here. But about a year ago,he was accidentally killed. My husband and I would like to set up a memorial (纪念物) to him, somewhere on campus."
The president wasn't moved.Instead,he was shocked."Madam,"he said,"we can't put up a statue for every person who studied at Harvard and died.If we did, this people would look like a cemetery(墓地).""Oh,no,"the lady explained quickly,"We don't want to put up a statue. We would like to give a building to Harvard."The president rolled his eyes and glanced at the couple and then exclaimed,"A building!Do you have any idea how much a building costs? We have spent over﹩7,500,000 on the campus building at Harvard."For a moment the lady was silent. The president was p leased, because he could get rid of them now. Then the lady turned to her husband and said quietly."Is that all it costs to start a university? Why don't we just start our own?"Her husband nodded.Since their offer was turned down.Mr,and Mrs Stanford traveled to California where they founded the University that bears their name,a memorial to a son that Harvard no longer cared about.

            • 7. He Made It!
One Sunday,Gavin,a teenager, went skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. In the early afternoon, when he was planning to go home,a fierce snowstorm swept into the area.Unable to see far,he accidentally turned off the path. Before he knew it,Gavin was lost, all alone! He didn't have food, water,a phone,or other supplies. He was getting colder by the minute.
Gavin had no idea where he was.He tried not to panic. He thought about all of the survival shows he had watched on TV.It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.
He decided to stop skiing. There was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed out.The first thing he did was to find shelter from the freezing wind and snow.If he didn't,his body temperature would get very low, which could quickly kill him.
Using his skis,Gavin built a snow cave.He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself, like a blanket,to stay as warm as he could.
By that evening,Gavin was really hungry. He ate snow and drank water from a nearby stream so that his body wouldn't lose too much water. Not knowing how much longer he could last,Gavin did the only thing he could---he huddled (蜷缩) in his cave and slept.
The next day,Gavin went out to look for help, but he couldn't find anyone. He followed his tracks and returned to the snow cave, because without shelter,he could die that night. On Tuesday,Gavin went out again to find help.He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. After two days stuck in the snow,Gavin was saved.
Gavin might not have survived this snowstorm had it not been for TV.He had often watched Grylls'survival show Man vs.Wild.That's where he learned the tips that saved his life.In each episode (一期节目) of Man vs.Wild,Grylls is abandoned in a wild area and has to find his way out.
When Grylls heard about Gavin's amazing deeds,he was super impressed that Gavin had made it since he knew better than anyone how hard Gavin had to work to stay alive.

Ron is ten years old. He loves to watch TV. But for one full year he did not watch TV at all. What was the reason? Ron’s parents said they would give him $ 600 if he didnˈt watch TV for a year.

Ronˈs parents thought he watched too much TV. One day his mother saw a newspaper story about a boy who didnˈt watch TV for a year. She showed the story to Ron. Ron liked the idea. He turned off the TV right away, and said, "It doesnˈt bother me not to watch TV. I just want the money."
At first, Ronˈs parents were very happy. Ron read books and newspapers, played outside, played computer games, and played cards with his mother. But after some time, he got bored. Every morning, he asked his parents, "What are we doing tonight?" Sometimes his mother and father wished he would watch TV just for one evening. Ron always said, "No, it would cost me money!"
Finally the year was over. Then Ron started watching his favorite TV shows all day long again. Ron got the money from his parents. What does he plan to do with the $ 600? "I want to buy myself a TV set!" he said.

A student worked part-time at a zoo. On his first day the zoo boss took him to the gorilla(大猩猩) cage. But it was empty. The gorilla was sick and couldn’t be there for the next week. The boss asked the student to put on a gorilla suit and sit in the cage. This way the people would at least have something to look at.

“It sounds interesting to me.” said the student.

The next day, he put on the gorilla suit and climbed into the cage. Soon there was a crowd of children coming to see the gorilla. “I need to do something to make them happy.” thought the student.

Then, he grabbed(抓) a rope in the cage and started to swing(摇摆). He swung higher and higher. All of a sudden, he flew out of his cage and dropped right into the lion’s cage!

He was so scared that he quickly got up and ran to the front of the cage. He shouted to the crowd, “Help me! I’m not a real gorilla!”

The lion jumped on his back. The student was sure he was going to die. Then he heard a voice from behind saying, “Shut up, or you’ll get us both fired.”
