The Orphan(孤儿)Trains began 75 years ago. They helped thousands of children without parents or homes. Some children were adopted by Christian families. Those who were not adopted were the official foster children.

Most Orphan Train children found good homes with loving Christian families. But a few ended up with families who used the children as servants. Anyway, if a child were being badly treated, the Orphan Trains usually found him or her a new home. They were not only provided with food and shelter but also kept away from a life of crime.

Clara and her two brothers were lucky to find good homes through the Orphan Trains. When Clara was about seven, her parents and a sister were killed when they tried to cross a river in New York State. She and her two brothers, five-year-old James and three-year-old Howard, were sent to different families in Kansas. Each child ended up with a different loving family. They were able to keep in touch with one another throughout their lives. Clara’s new mother was a school teacher. When she grew up, Clara married, moved to Texas and lived a happy life all through her life.

In an interview, the grown-up “orphans” said they learned in the process of their life how important it is to be loved. They grew up to become loving, caring parents of their own children.

Danielle Steel, America’s sweetheart, is one of the hardest working women in the book business. Unlike other productive authors who write one book at a time, she can work on up to five. Her research some before writing takes at least three years. Once she has fully studied her subjects, ready to dive into a book, she can spend twenty hours nonstop at her desk.

Danielle Steel comes from New York and was sent to France for her education. After graduation, she worked in the public relations and advertising industries. Later she started a job as a writer which she was best fit for. Her achievements are unbelievable: 390 million copies of books in print, nearly fifty New York Times best-selling novels, and a series of “Max and Martha” picture books for children to help them deal with the real-life problem of death, new babies and new schools. Her l998 book about the death of her was shot to the top of the New York Times best-selling list as soon as it came out. Twenty-eight of her books have been made into film. She is listed in the Guinness Books of World Records for one of her hooks being the Times best-seller for 381 weeks straight.

Not content with a big house, a loving family, and a view of the Golden Gate Bridge, Danielle Steel considers her readers to be the most important resource and has kept in touch with them by e-mail. While she is often compared to the heroines (女主人公) of her own invention, her life is undoubtedly much quieter. But if she does have anything in common with them, it is her strength of will and her inimitable (独特的) style. There is only one Danielle Steel.

We were on our way home from Houston,Texas around the Weston Lakes area one Saturday morning. We decided to stop at a local gas station to get coffee and something to snack on since it was a good hour and a half before we got home.

When we were done,we got back into our car and before I started it,we noticed a man standing outside in front of the building. He was a homeless man with worn clothes and it looked like he had gone in and got himself some coffee or something warm to drink since it was cold this time of the year.He must have not had enough money to get something to eat.

Then a dog walked up to the front of the building.I could tell she was a female, because you could see that she had been feeding puppies(baby dogs). She was terribly in need of something to eat and I felt so bad for her.I knew if she didn't eat soon, she and her puppies would not make it

My wife and I sat there and looked at her.We noticed that people walked by and didn't even pet her, like most people do when they walk by an animal in front of a store. We still did not do anything. But the homeless man,who I thought did not buy himself anything to eat, went back into the store. And what he did brought tears to me and my wife.He had gone into the store and with what money he may have had, bought a can of dog food and fed that dog.

This story plays a great part in our lives. You see, that was Mother's Day weekend. And a lot of people forget that some animals are parents too.

My journey began with the attendance of TESOL certification course in my home state of Florida last February. After 3weekends of study and another 40hours'post-study online,I received my TESOL certificate.
I was put in touch with Philip, who is Program Director of the Teach in Thailand. In close consultation with Philip,I chose my employment school and after many months of excitement,I finally boarded my plane to Thailand in early April, and set off on an adventure!
After a few weeks of single travel,I met up with Philip and the other new teachers in my program in Bangkok. It was great to meet other people who were on the same journey as me,see some cool sights and hang out in Thailand's cities!Directly after that,I attended the week-long seminar (研讨会),which is included in the Teach in Thailand Program. At the end of the seminar,I was transported to my employment school---Anuban Buriram Primary School.
I truly love my job---I teach Grades 5and 6and I have the cleverest and most motivated kids in the world. It's a truly fantastic thing that you can see the difference you make in someone else's life, right in front of you!
The city Buriram is small, surrounded with green rice fields.People here are more friendly than anyone I've ever met-I've never been anywhere where a smile is so easily received, where everyone you pass is so eager to say"Hello"and"Good morning".I've been taken out to countless dinners, and been lent a guitar,a digital camera, and even a motorbike, and I am constantly given little Thai treats and the most delicious fresh fruits many times a week.I only hope to pay it forward in the future.

He's a lovely man in his early 60s,with one ever-lasting love-books.They're his pride and joy, because, whether he likes it or not, they seem to be taking over his house.Guanlao has set up a"library"outside his home in central Manila.Readers can take as many books as they want, for as long as they want.As Guanlao says,"The only rule is that there are no rules."
You might consider it would end very quickly. But in fact,in the 12years he's been running his library. He's found that his collection has grown rather than become smaller,as more and more people help the activity."It seems to me that the books are speaking to me,"he says with a smile,"The books are telling me they want to be read."
Guanlao started his library in 2000,shortly after the death of his parents. He was looking for something to honor their memory, and that was when he hit upon the idea of promoting the reading habit passed on to him from his parents. So he put the books outside the door of his house to see if anyone wanted to borrow them. They did,and they brought the books back with others to add to the collection. The library was born. The library is not advertised, but somehow, every day,a steady stream of people find their way there.
To help the poorest communities in Manila,Guanlao doesn't wait for them to find him on his"book bike".He wants to set up a"book boat",traveling around the islands of Sulu and Basilan. As we sat outside Hernando Guanlao's house in the midday sun, watching people look through his collection,he thought it was worth spending all his time.

Since it was announced on Monday that 84-year-old Tu had become the first Chinese citizen to win this international prize, her former home in the old town of Ningbo,Zhejiang province, has attracted visitors, especially parents and their children----even though it is not open to the public.
The house, where Tu lived until she went to university in Beijing, covers an area of 2,200square meters and is priced at 150million yuan(﹩23.6million).It is part of a complex of 37traditional buildings, including several city-and-district-level cultural relic preservation sites, that have been transformed into a high-end art,and commercial zone.
"There are continually parents taking their children, from infants in strollers to college students,to take photos in front of Tu's former home.Security guards have been ordered to go on patrol around the clock,"said Mr.Zhao,a salesperson from Ningbo Real Estate Inc Co.
Shanghai resident Xu Lingfei, who was on a trip to Ningbo, took her 9-year-old son to walk around the complex on Wednesday."Chinese people believe in exams and awards and have a strong preference for high performers.Taking children to visit the former dwelling places of celebrities(名人) is a way to inspire them to study harder,"Xu said.
Something similar happened after Mo Yan won the Nobel Prize for literature in 2012.Tourists started visiting Mo's former home in rural Caomi,Shandong Province,in an endless stream starting the day after he won the prize. Some even pulled the radishes planted in front of the house.and carried away some bricks.

            • 9. The Board Meeting had come to an end.Bob started to stand up and knocked into the table, spilling his coffee over his notes."How embarrassing!I am getting so clumsy in my old age."
Everyone had a good laugh, and soon we were all telling stories of our most embarrassing moments. It came around to Frank who sat quietly listening to the others.Someone said,"Come on,Frank.Tell us your most embarrassing moment."
Frank laughed and began to tell us of his childhood."I grew up in San Pedro. My Dad was a fisherman, and he loved the sea.He had his own boat, but it was hard making a living on the sea.He worked hard and would stay out until he caught enough to feed the family. Not just enough for our family, but also for his Mom and Dad and the other kids that were still at home."
He looked at us and said,"I wish you could have met my Dad.He was a big man,and he was strong from pulling the nets and fighting the seas for his catch. When you got close to him,he smelled like the ocean. He would wear his old canvas,foul-weather coat and his bibbed overalls. His rain hat would be pulled down over his brow.No matter how much my mother washed them, they would still smell of the sea and of fish."
Frank's voice dropped a bit."When the weather was bad he would drive me to school. He had this old truck that he used in his fishing business. That truck was older than he was.It would wheeze and rattle down the road. You could hear it coming for blocks. As he would drive toward the school,I would shrink (畏缩) down into the seat hoping to disappear.Half the time,he would slam to a stop and the old truck would belch (喷出) a cloud of smoke. He would pull right up in front, and it seemed like everybody would be standing around and watching. Then he would lean over and give me a big kiss on the cheek and tell me to be a good boy.It was so embarrassing for me.Here,I was twelve years old,and my Dad would lean over and kiss me goodbye!"
He paused and then went on,"I remember the day I decided I was too old for a goodbye kiss. When we got to the school and came to a stop,he had his usual big smile. He started to lean toward me,but I put my hand up and said,"No,Dad."It was the first time I had ever talked to him that way,and he had this surprised look on his face.I said,"Dad,I'm too old for a goodbye kiss.I'm too old for any kind of kiss."My Dad looked at me for the longest time, and his eyes started to tear up.Then he turned and looked out the windshield."You're right,"he said."You are a big boy…a man.I won't kiss you anymore."
Frank got a funny look on his face, and the tears began to well up in his eyes,as he spoke."It wasn't long after that when my Dad went to sea and never came back.It was a day when most of the fleet (船队) stayed in,but not Dad.He had a big family to feed. They found his boat adrift with its nets half in and half out.He must have gotten into a strong wind and was trying to save the nets and the floats."
I looked at Frank and saw that tears were running down his cheeks.Frank spoke again."Guys, you don't know what I would give to have my Dad give me just one more kiss on the cheek…to feel his rough old face…to smell the ocean on him…to feel his arm around my neck. I had been a man then.If I had been a man,I would never have told my Dad I was too old for a goodbye kiss."
