With the development of Chinese comprehensive national economy, the overall number of foreign students who come to China to study has been increasing sharply in the past few years. However, the number of those foreign students who can a work permit after graduation is falling year by year.

There are some factors which account for this situation. In spite of the fact that there are a lot of companies in China, many of them prefer to hire local people rather than foreigners. Most companies want to employ those who have some working experience. Around 70% of jobs are filled through solid connections, while foreign students often communicate and talk with overseas students. So many of them find it hard to find a job in China. To stay or to leave? That’s a question for them.

If you expect something to turn out badly, it probably will. Pessimism is seldom disappointed. But the same principle also works in reverse(颠倒). If you expect good things to happen, they usually do! There seems to be a natural causeandeffect relationship between optimism and success.

The way you look at life will determine how you feel and how you perform. Optimists are always hopeful and positive. Pessimists always expect the worst and see the negative side of things. The optimist says, “The glass is halffull.” The pessimist says, “The glass is halfempty.”

Optimism and pessimism are both powerful forces, and each of us must choose which we want to shape our outlook and our expectations. There is enough good and bad in everyoneˈs life—ample sorrow and happiness, sufficient joy and pain—to find a rational basis for either optimism or pessimism. We can choose a laugh or cry, bless or curse. Itˈs our decision: From which perspective do we want to view life? Will we look up in hope or down in despair?

Once upon a time some tiny frogs held a competition. The first to reach the top of a very high tower would be the winner.

A big crowd gathered around the tower to see the race and cheer them on.

The race began. No one in the crowd really believed that any of the tiny frogs would reach the top of tower. “They will never get to the top! They will never succeed!” someone said.

One by one, the tiny frogs began to collapse (退下).

The crowd kept shouting, “It is too difficult! No frog will make it!”

More tiny frogs got tired and gave up, but one continued climbing, higher and higher. This one wouldn’t give up.

In the end, he was the only one left—the only one to get to the top. The other frogs naturally wanted to know: How did the frog make it?

One frog stepped forward to ask the winner. It turned out that the winner was deaf.

He had won because he was able to keep his own mind. He was able to keep trying. He couldn’t hear criticism; neither could he hear praise.

We can learn a lesson from this story: don’t let others’ praise or criticism to hold you back on your way to success.

One night in 1980, 5-year-old David Liddelow prayed to be able to do everything correctly. However, his father told him that no one could live without making mistakes. The boy was puzzled, for he had believed that the Prime Minister was too important to do anything wrong. So he wrote to Mrs. Thatcher, the Prime Minister of Britain at that time.

“Dear Mrs. Thatcher, last night when we were saying prayers my father said everyone has done wrong things. I said I don’t think you have done bad things because you are the Prime Minister. Am I right or is my father?” Before long, Mrs. Thatcher replied with the following words.

“There will be times when we say or do something we wish we hadn’t done and we shall be sorry and try not to do it again! As the Prime Minister, I try very hard to do things right. However, if you and I were to paint a picture, it wouldn’t be as good as that of a great artist.”

We may see the same scene everywhere in life: in subways, restaurants, elevators, on the road, and anywhere else, people are watching their mobile phones. From family reunions to dates with friends, people can’t stop checking their twitter, WeChat or Facebook on the mobile phone, ignoring the persons around them completely. Phubbing (低头症) tends not only to involve young people, but also the elderly and kids.

Phubbing is a newly coined (杜撰的) term which comes from the words “phone” and “snubbing (冷落)”. It describes the habit of snubbing others when someone focuses only on a mobile phone. The word “phubbing” was even included in the Australian National Dictionary in 2012. Obviously, the indifference (冷漠) and rudeness of the information age are spreading globally. A Stop Phubbing campaign site has been started. You can find the slogan of the website as follows: “Stop twittering, stop posting photos … Enjoy your food, enjoy the music and respect your companions.”

“I started skating when I was 3 years old. Competing in the Olympic Games had been my dream from the beginning. When I was 12 years old, my mother was hospitalized with breast cancer. I was on the way to making my first national team. Seeing my excitement at each stage gave her strength through her illness. On days when she was too weak to walk, she would think, ‘I have to make it through. I have to be there for my kids.’ My mom was able to leave the hospital to come to Philadelphia from New York to watch me win the Junior Ladies title. That day I was skating for more than just the judges. My parentsˈ support made all the difference when I performed on the skating stage. Editorˈs note: China is the top country of origin for international students in the US, with more than 274,000 Chinese students reportedly accounting for 31 percent of all international students at US universities. Many Chinese parents save up a lot of money for their children to pursue an overseas education. Is it worth spending big to study abroad? You are welcome to leave your comments.

Arsa (Russia): I went to study abroad when I was 17. First year was a total waste as I met plenty of Russian students in my college and we spent most of our time shopping and hanging out at cafes, it wasnˈt until two years later that I realized that my English hadnˈt improved. I changed my mindset entirely and started studying hard. I ended up staying in UK for 10 years, which opened a lot of doors and introduced me to great people, so Iˈm all for studying abroad.

Truth (US): There is an assumption that American education is the best in the world, so Chinese parents are pushing their kids to American colleges. And some are even sending their children overseas at junior or high school level. I often feel this is a mistake as the education a Chinese child gets in a foreign country is very different from what they are used to and they often struggle. Some students have trouble understanding their lecturers and their assignments keep coming back with poor scores.

A new report from the American Heart Association says fitness levels in children are lower today than they were 30 years ago. The researchers looked at data from the past 46 years. The statistics were on more than 25 million children in 28 countries. The research team found that on average, today’s children run one kilometer about one minute slower than their parents did three decades ago. The figures were roughly the same for boys and girls. The distance a child can run is decreasing by around half of one per cent every year. One of the biggest reasons for the slowdown in children’s running ability is obesity (肥胖). Kids are overweight because they are eating too much and not exercising enough.

The researchers say their report is worrying. If children are becoming fatter and less fit, they will be unhealthier in the future. Lead researcher Dr Grant Tomkinson said, “If a young person is generally unfit now, then they are more likely to develop conditions like heart disease later in life. We need to help to inspire children and the youth to develop fitness habits that will keep them healthy. They need to choose a range of physical activities they like, and they need to get moving.” He added, “Young people can be fit in different ways. They can be strong like a weightlifter, or flexible like a gymnast, or skillful like a tennis player.”

BEIJING, August 19 — Shanghai will launch a pilot textbook recycling scheme in secondary schools from this fall semester to reduce textbook paper consumption, the Shanghai Education Commission revealed yesterday.

The first batch of textbooks to be recycled or reused will be middle school music material. Books on other subjects such as art, physical education and even major subjects like Chinese, math and English, will be included gradually.

The schools taking part in the program will have to purchase new textbooks about every five years and distribute them for students’ use during class sessions. But the books will have to be collected and kept on campus after class, rather than allowing students to take them back home, so that they could be passed on to the next batch of students.

Possessing one’s own brand-new textbooks has been a routine for local elementary school students for decades. The practice, however, leads to huge paper consumption, officials said.

For instance, there are nearly 2 million elementary school students in the city, with an estimated 4,000 tons of paper needed each year. Had these books been reused for five years, more than 80,000 trees could have been saved.

In western countries, such as Australia and America began this practice years ago, which set a good example to other countries, esp. developing ones.  (Edited from Shanghai Daily)

One day, Zeng’s wife decided to go out for shopping, but her little son insisted on going with her to the market. Thinking that she would come back very soon, and that the naughty boy would bring her a lot of trouble, she was unwilling to do so.

In order to persuade the boy to stay home, she told him, “Oh, come on, good boy, if you listen to Mom and then Mom will give you a present when I am back.”

“What present are you going to give me, Mom?” asked the son.

“We haven’t eaten meat for a long time, so I will kill our pig and let you enjoy a big nice dinner.” The mother comforted the boy when it happened that their pig was wandering in front of the house. Just at that time, her husband came back and heard what she said. Thinking of the nice meal, the boy gave in.

Not very soon, the mother came back, but what she saw shocked her. It was her husband who had killed the only pig of the poor family.

“Why did you kill it? You know that it is very important for my family.” she scolded him.

“I did that just for your promise!” Mr. Zeng answered.
