              The Use of Examinations

A good education should make people think for themselves. But the exam can never do anything like that.

First, examinations are second to none because it brings anxiety to students. As soon as a child begins school, he enters a world of terrible competition.

Second, exams do not interest students to read or to learn widely. They do not help students to look for more and more knowledge, but try to put as much as possible into the students’ head.

Third, they lower the standards of teaching, for they do not give any freedom to teachers to decide what to teach. Teachers themselves have no choice but to train their students in exam techniques. The most successful students are not always the best educated but the best trained in the technique of exams.

Fourth, they can tell you nothing about a person’s true ability. The exams are often nothing more than a subjective assessment(主观评价) by some examiners.

However, if there are no exams, few students or even no one will do any revision or study!

My doorbell rings at11 a.m. On the step, I find an elderly Chinese lady; she is small and slight, and she’s holding the hand of a little boy. In her other hand, she holds a paper carrier bag.

I know this lady. It is by no means her first visit. She is the little boy’s grandmother, and her daughter bought the house next door last October.

My visitor’s daughter, Nicole (who speaks fluent English), is currently inShanghai, but her parents are in Vancouver for the summer with the little boy. Nicole has told her mother that I am having heart surgery shortly, and the result is that her mother has decided I need to be supplied with meals.

I know what is inside the paper carrier bag—a thermos with hot soup and a stainless-steel container with a meal of rice, vegetables and either chicken, meat or shrimp, sometimes with a kind of pancake. This has become an almost-daily occurrence.

She doesn’t speak English and all I can say in Mandarin is hello.

So here we are, two grandmothers a world away from where we were raised, neither of us able to speak the other’s language but communicating one way or another (with some help from technology). The doorbell keeps ringing and there is the familiar brown paper carrier bag, handed smilingly to me by her.

I’m working on some more Mandarin words. “Thank you” is, of course, the first one. Somehow, it seems inadequate.

There once was a little boy who had a bad temper. His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence.

The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number o f nails hammered daily gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence.

Finally the day came when the boy didn’t lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper. The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone.

The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said,“You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave scars just like these. And no matter how many times you say you’re sorry, the wounds will still be there.”

South Africa’s Street Store doesn’t just help to clothe the homeless, but also gives them the shopping experience of choosing what they want. With the idea to give the homeless the same dignity as customers who can pay, the Street Store sets up their pop-up cardboard shop in Cape Town, inviting customers in need to browse through the offerings and choose an outfit for themselves from the hundreds of donated items at their will.

The Street Store works closely with local council to get permission to pop-up their sidewalk shops in poor areas around Cape Town. Because of the social conditions in South Africa, over half of the children live in poverty, making the Street Store even more popular.

The Street Store displays a row of cardboard “hangers” (衣架), with boxes neatly arranged below each one. On the hangers hang shirts, T-shirts, trousers and dresses donated by the Cape Town public. In the boxes below, multiple pairs of shoes await a new owner. Street Store volunteers also act as store consultants, offering fashion advice to their customers as they try on chosen donated items.

The Street Store has already reached thousands in the Cape Town area, with over 1,000 satisfied homeless customers visiting on their first day in operation. The program gives the homeless not only a change to pick up some needed clothing, but also restores confidence by giving them a retail experience—even when pocket money doesn’t allow it.

Chinese adults read news and threads on smartphone app WeChat for more than 40 minutes a day on average, according to the latest annual survey of China’s reading habits released on April 20. The results show that on average, Chinese adults use WeChat to read twice a day for a total length of more than 40 minutes. The survey showed that 66.4 percent of adults in China used WeChat to read, of which 72.9 percent read news, 67.1 percent read their friends’ updates and 20.9 percent read threads on public accounts.

Professor Wang Yuguang of the Department of Information Management in Peking University said the dream of having libraries all over the world is still not realized, and the presence of WeChat is filling this void (空白) to some extent. But personally, he thinks WeChat is taking too much of our time. Students are too reliant on WeChat.

“Reading on WeChat is fragmented (片段的), not to mention the inaccuracy of some of the information,” said Dean of Chinese Academy of Press and Publication Wei Yushan. Experts believe that children’s stories, academic reports and classic literature should still be read on paper.

            • 7. One morning, a friend of mine set the breakfast table beside a huge window, which overlooked the Tred Avon River. Suddenly she leaned forward and cried out, “There is a goose(鹅)out there!”

We saw the figure of a large Canada goose, very still, its wings folded tight to its sides and its feet frozen to the ice.

Then in the sky, she saw a line of swans(天鹅). They flew from the top of the sky downward and at last landed on the ice. My friend was on her feet, with one unbelieving hand against her mouth. As the swans surrounded the frozen goose, she feared that the poor goose might be pecked(啄)out by those great swan bills(天鹅的利喙).

Unexpectedly, those bills began to work on the ice. The long necks were lifted and curved down (弯下) again and again. They went on for a long time. At last, the goose was free and standing on the ice. And the swans stood nearby watching. Then, as if the goose was crying, “I cannot fly”, four of the swans came down around it. Their powerful bills chipped off the ice stuck in its feathers. Slowly, the goose spread its wings as far as they would go. Seeing the goose could freely move its wings, the swans flew slowly into the sky.

This is a true story. Every time I think of it, I can’t help asking, “If so for birds, why not for man?”

"Got your cellphone? Glasses? Wallet? ID?" I asked.

"Yes," my husband Avraham smiled. "Can we go now? You've got to meet your interview before I go to see my patient at one o'clock."

                 "Right. Got your medical bag?"

                 "Yes."

Even years after moving from North America, we still loved the half-hour drive to Jerusalem (耶路撒冷). The blue sky above the mountains, the trees, and the journey up to the Holy City always filled us with gratitude for living in Israel.

As we sped along, we came to our favorite part of the journey, where a wonderful view of Jerusalem suddenly appeared above the roadway. We had had a good time and arrived at my meeting with time to spare.

After my interview, I met Avraham at our favorite cafe. Avraham ordered his daily iced coffee and a bag of fresh bread. Glancing at the clock, I suggested we go to see his patient.

Avraham had to visit an elderly woman in Jerusalem because her daughter had called the day before to arrange the appointment. As there are very few foot specialists in Israel, Avraham would travel all over the country to see patients requiring specialized foot care. He searched his pockets for a note on which he had written the address.

But the note was nowhere to be found.

"I don't believe it! I must have left the address at home."

"Do you remember any part of the address?" I asked.

"I remember that there was a number 17 in it, because it was part of my birth date."

"Do you know the street name?"

"No. Just that it's in this neighborhood."

I had heard the family name mentioned the day before and remembered it sounded like a European name. "Let's try looking at buildings and see if the mailboxes can give us some help," I offered.
