            • 1. In an international spelling contest in America, an 11-year-old girl was asked to spell a certain word. But with her   (1)  voice the judges were not sure if she spelled the word with the letter A or E. They talked it over and   (2)   decided to simply ask her what she had said. By now, the girl knew she had   (3)   the word, but instead of lying, she told the truth that she had said the   (4)  letter— so she lost the contest.
As the girl walked off the    (5)  , the entire audience stood to their feet, clapping to applaud her    (6)  . Later, dozens of newspaper reporters wrote about this 11-year-old girl’s honesty, even when it   (7)  her the contest. But the fact is that she   (8)  the biggest contest that day: the contest of her   (9)  .
Probably the biggest test of our character and honesty is what we should do if we knew we would never get   (10)  . This young girl could easily have   (11)  and nobody would have known it but herself. But that’s just it: She would know she did wrong. It’s been said, “If you   (12)  , you make yourself cheap.” This young girl was strong and smart enough to prize her own   (13)  and character more than the prize from a spelling   (14)  . Her respect for herself was more important than any   (15)  others might give her for winning a contest. She knew she would have to live with herself and the   (16)  she made in that moment will have long-lasting influence.
It’s so true that the choices you make today   (17)  what you are tomorrow. Our children will   (18)   our behavior much more than our advice. So if we want them to   (19)   to be honest, we must show them the way by being honest ourselves. Remember, our kids are   (20)  what we do and how we live even when we don’t think they see or know.

She was ninety-two.  41 , I was not expecting her to  42 and I don’t think she was expecting it either. I was very close to my mom, being an only child. We did have  43 on the surface, but we still had a close relationship  44 those.
Being newly married less than a year, and having moved a  couple of times  45 , I have had more changes recently in my life than at any other point of my fifty-four years. Stability is one of the gifts that Mom  46 me and it had so many  47 that I wasn’t aware of until now. My husband and I have made some  48 to Mom’s home and will be moving at the end of next week. It is now our home, but it still has my  49 heart in it. It’s where I grew up, and there are many  50 that will live there with us. At the same time, I am looking forward to  51 some very happy and memorable ones with my husband.
Mom  52 such a big part in my life. Our lives were  53 woven because she gave me her values which have become strongly  54 in the woman I am today. I don’t have any children whom I could  55 these on to. However, Mother’s values affect me every day with the  56 I have with others, whether I know them or not. I hope Mom would be  57 of who I am, what I’ve become because of her, and of  58 I am going to live with my  59 . She gave me everything I needed to know in life: respect others, and give help to others who  60 it most. I love you, Mom, and I will never forget you.

Terry was a middle-aged leather trader whose repeated failure in career made him a depressed man, often   (1)   that he had been cheated by others. One day he told his wife he was so  (2)  with the city that he had to leave.

So his family moved to another city. It was the evening of a weekend. When Terry and his wife were busily  (3)  up their new home, the light suddenly   (4)  . Terry was regretful to have forgotten to bring along   (5)   and had to wait   (6)   in a low mood. Just then he heard light, hesitant   (7)   on his door that were clearly audible (听到) in the   (8)   night.

“Who’s it?” he wondered, since Terry was a   (9)  to this city. And this was the moment he especially hated to be   (10)  , so he went to the door and opened it   (11)  . At the door was a little girl, shyly asking, “Sir, do you have candles? I’m your neighbor. ” “No,” answered Terry in anger and shut the door   (12)  . “What a nuisance(讨厌)!” He complained over it with his wife. “No sooner had we settled down than the neighbor came to   (13)   things.”

After a while, the door was knocked again. He opened it and found the same girl outside.  (14)  this time she was   (15)   two candles, saying, “My grandma told me the new neighbor downstairs might need candles. She   (16)   me here to give you these.” Terry was very   (17)   by what he saw and heard.

At that moment he suddenly realized what caused his   (18)   in life. It was his   (19)   and harshness (刻薄) with other people. The person who had cheated him in life was   (20)   nobody else but himself, for his eyes had been blurred (蒙蔽) by his unsympathetic mind.

It was summer vacation. Our 12-year-old son, Jack, felt free. I let him 41            this I’m-on-vacation

feeling for several days. I was happy for him.

But before long, I couldn’t help noticing that weeds were growing in the garden, dishes    42          up. With a little baby and horses to care for, it is really   43           for me to manage all the things. So one morning, I told Jack that he had to work two hours a day to help me, “I’ll   44             you, but you have to do it.” He got quite    45             . “I don’t think I should have to work if I don’t feel like it! I’m only a kid!” 46            , I insisted two hours a day wasn’t too much to ask of a 12-year-old.

After that, each morning I gave him   47             about what needed to be done around the yard. The work became part of his daily routine, but he didn’t spare any   48           on it.

Halfway through the   49                , the $1 and $5 bills began to pile up in Jack’s drawer. About this time he came to me for   50       work. He figured out if he worked extra, he might be able to buy a 51             by the end of the summer. Surprised and happy, I thought of another task for him. 52               August heat, he worked happily with his goal in his mind.

One day I went out to inspect his   53            and praised him for the nice job he was doing-- the messy old farmhouse turned into a beautiful view at the   54             of Jack.

“Yeah, this place is starting to look good.” He said   55              , as sweat dripped from his dirty face. A few minutes later, he said to himself, “I wonder what it   56               like to win the lottery (彩票).”

It’s not   57               him to be dreaming of winning the lottery. For a minute I worried that his   58             had changed. But my worry was gone.

“I bet it doesn’t feel that good,” he answered himself, “because you wouldn’t have   59              it.”

Hearing this, I came to realize something unexpected   60                happen——Jack’s work had given him something much more precious than that new drum, something more valuable than a jackpot (大奖).
