If you want your land to keep fertile (肥沃),you must try to stop soil from being carried away by water or winds. When soil is taken away by flowing water or blowing winds,we call it soil erosion (侵蚀).Ways have been found to stop soil erosion, and this is known as soil conservation (保存).One way of stopping soil erosion is to grow small plants such as grasses. These plants are referred to as cover crops, whose roots hold the soil tightly together. The rain water cannot wash away the soil When trees and tall bushes are planted at the edges of an open field, soil erosion by strong winds cannot take place. The trees and bushes, which act as a very big and firm wall, protect the open land from the winds. The way to stop soil erosionon slopes is to build terraces on the slope of hillside and mountainside. When the slope of a hillside is cut into"steps",water carrying soil cannot run straight down the terraces, which are used to slow down the speed of the flowing water containing much soil in it.In this way most of the soil in the water is left behind on the terraces.

When his book Little Princes begins,Conor Grennan is planning a yearlong trip around the globe,a journey that began with a threemonth volunteer service at the Little Princes Children's Home,an orphanage(孤儿院) in Nepal.
When he arrived at the orphanage,Conor was immediately welcomed by all the children even though he had no previous experience in working with children. He quickly grew to love the job.But it wasn't long before Conor came to learn that the children were not orphans at all-they were actually children who had been separated from their parents by a child trafficker(贩子).
This realization turned Conor's global journey into a strong desire to try to find a way to reunite these children with their families. As a part of his efforts,Conor did a great amount of work when he was back in AmericA.He started up a nonprofit organization called Next Generation Nepal (NGN),raising funds in order to buy a house in Nepal for another children's home. Then, back in Nepal,he began a lifechanging trek into the remote villages in the mountains of HumlA.
It is really amazing to read about Conor communicating with the children and to read his descriptions of each of them.He made me truly care about the kids.I wanted them to be able to reunite with their families, too!Unfortunately, this was simply not possible for some of the children. But there were some children who received amazing surprises.Jagrit, for example, had thought for years that both his parents were dead. So,Conor was dumbfounded when he visited Jagrit's village and was introduced to the boy's father!

It is only during the last few years that man has generally realized that in the world of nature a balance exists (存在 ) between all forms of life.No living thing can exist by itself; it is part of a system in which all forms of life are joined together. If we change one part of the nature order, this will in turn almost certainly bring about changes in some other part.
The cutting down of forests reduces the supply of oxygen. The killing of weeds and insects by chemicals leads to the widespread poisoning (中毒) of animals and birds. The throwing of waste products into the ocean hurts life in the sea, while waste gases change the chemical balance of atmosphere and shut out some of the sun's necessary life-giving rays.
And so we could go on,adding more examples, until in despair (绝望) we might feel like giving up the struggle to control and keep within limits these harmful human activities.Man is very clever at changing the world around him to satisfy his immediate need, but he is not so clever at looking far ahead,or at thinking about what the future results of his action might be.Man may well destroy himself in his attempt (企图) to be too ambitious (野心).

              A. it is during the last few years that man has generally known the balance of nature
              B. there are some living things which can exist by themselves without change
              C. all forms of life belong to a system in which all the parts can be changed for another
              D. we cannot change one form of life without destroying the balance of nature
              (2) The last paragraph suggests that,in man's attempt to increase immediate benefits, ______ .
              A. man often fails to think about his future results of his action
              B. man is always too ambitious to planning distant future
              C. man often feels that he will have to give up in despair
              D. man is always anxious to control and keep his activities within limits
              (3) Which of the following statements is true? ______
              A. Cutting down woods does little harm to human beings.
              B. Man has to pay much attention to the future results of his present action.
              C. Oxygen comes from forests.
              D. This passage tells us to try our best to get as much as possible immediately.
              (4) Which of the following is the best title of this passage? ______

In our life,we have rarely expressed our gratitude to the ones who have lived those years with us.In fact,we donˈt have to wait for  (1)  to thank the ones closest to us—the ones so easily  (2)  .If I have learned anything about giving thanks,it is this:Give it now!

Of course, there are times when you canˈt express gratitude  (8)  .In that case donˈt let embarrassment sink you into silence—speak up the first time you have the chance.

I wonder if we had words in our   (14)   for thankyou.Would we do a better job of  (15)   our gratitude?Would we be more responsive, more sensitive, more caring?

Thankfulness sets in motion a chain reaction that  (16)  people all around us—including ourselves. For no one ever  (17)  the tune of a grateful heart. Its message is   (18)  ;its words go  (19)  all earthly barriers;its music   (20)   the heavens.

I was very disappointed not to be able to go to the jazz concert last Friday. The advertisement in the paper said that you could buy tickets at the theatre box in Richland Hill any day between 10:00and 4:00.Since I work from 9:00to 5:30,the only time I could go to the theatre was during my 45-minute lunch break.Unfortunately, the theatre is on the other side of the town, and the bus service between my office and Richland Hill is not very good. But if you are lucky you can make the round trip in 45minutes.Last Monday,I stood at the bus stop for fifteen minutes waiting for the bus.By the time
I saw one come round the corner, there was not enough time left to make the trip.So I gave up and went back to the office. The same thing happened on Tuesday, and again the next day.On Thursday,my luck changed.I got on a bus right away and arrived at the theatre in exactly twenty minutes. When I got there, however,I found a long line of people at the box office.I heard one man said he had been waiting in line for over an hour.Realizing I would not have enough time to wait in line,I caught the next bus and headed back across the town.By Friday I realized my only hope was to make the trip by taxi.It was expensive, but I felt it would be worth it to hear the concert. The trip by taxi only took 10minutes,but it felt like an hour to me.When I got to the theatre,I was relieved to see that nobody was waiting in line. The reason, however,I quickly discovered, was that they had already sold all the tickets.

One day I was driven by a rainstorm to take shelter in a little hut by the roadside, which was (1) by a shoemaker as his workshop. The man and his son were (2) at their work, and (3) saying, “Good day,” we began to talk together.
