Harvard,Oxford, Cambridge, the list of overseas universities that many Chinese students want to study at is just endless. But when they complete their studies there, there are basically two choices left: staying in the foreign country or coming back to China.
The Ministry of Education released the 2016 Blue Book on the Employment of Chinese Students Returning from Study Overseas on March 25. The report shows that 409,100 students returned to China after their overseas study last year, making up nearly 80 percent of all the students studying abroad. In 2015, there were over 500,000 Chinese students studying abroad, an increase of 14 percent compared to 2014. In 2010, the number of students studying abroad was only 135,000 with 50 percent of them coming back home.
However, the large number of returnees(海归) also means that they face challenges in the job market. According to the recent report, the salaries of overseas graduates with doctor’s degrees average around 5,000 yuan to 10,000 yuan a month and nearly 50 percent of students with master’s degrees earn less than 5,000 yuan. “In an open society, it’s common to let returnees and domestic graduates compete on the same level.” Shi Zehua, an associate professor at Beijing Foreign Studies University, Wrote in the Beijing News.
