Right now,62 million girls worldwide are not in school. They're receiving no reading,no writing,no math-none of the basic skills they need to provide for themselves and their families, and contribute fully to their countries.
Often, understandably, this issue is considered as a matter of result of a failure to invest enough money in educating girls. We can solve this problem, the argument goes,if we provide more scholarships and safe transportation and build more school bathrooms for girls. And it's true that investments like these are important for addressing our global girls'education crisis. But we cannot solve our girls'education problem until we deal with the broader cultural beliefs and practices that can help cause this crisis and make it continue.
We know that legal and cultural change is possible because we've seen it countries around the world, including our own.A century ago, women in American couldn't even vote.Decades ago,it was perfectly legal for employers to refuse to hire women. But in each generation, brave people-both men and women-stood up to change these practices. They did it through individual acts like taking their bosses to court and even through national movements that brought changes.
Cultural changes like these can encourage countries to make greater investments in girls'education. And when they do,that can cause a powerful effect that can cause even greater cultural and political progress for women.Girls who are educated marry later.Educated girls also can earn higher salaries. And when educated girls became healthy, financially secure, empowered women, they're far better equipped to achieve their needs and wishes, and challenge unjust laws and harmful practices and beliefs.
But for me,this issue isn't just about politics or economics---for me,this is a moral issue. As I've traveled the world,I've met so many of these girls. They're so hungry to realize their promise. They walk for hours each day to school, learning at rickety desks in bare concrete classrooms. These girls aren't different from my daughters or any of our daughters.None of us here in the USA would accept this for our own daughters and granddaughters,so why would we accept it for any girl on our planet?
As a first lady,a mother, and a human being,I cannot walk away from these girls, and I plan to keep raising my voice on their behalf for the rest of my life.I plan to keep talking about this issue here at home, because I believe that all of us-men and women,in every country on this planet-have a moral obligation to give all of these girls a future worthy of their promise and their dreams.

Birthdays are especially important to the very young and the very old.On their birthdays, people receive birthday cards and birthday presents from their family and friends.Children's cards often have a large number on them showing how old they are.Cards for adults have pictures of flowers or scenery,or cartoons.Inside there is usually a simple greeting, such as"Happy Birthday"or"Many Happy Returns Of The Day".
In the US children who have their birthdays during the school year take a cake to school and have a small party with their class. In Britain children sometimes get bumped ( lifted off the ground horizontally and put down again sharply) by their friends, the same number of times as their age.
In the US,the 16th birthday is called sweet sixteen. It is the age at which a person can get a US driver's license, and some wealthier parents give their children a car as a present. At 18,in Britain and in the US,young people become adults and many have a big party. In most parts of the US,21is the age at which people can drink alcohol legally. In Britain, people celebrate 21st birthdays less.
Many adults dislike getting older and many tell a lie about their age.But in general older people are now much more willing to tell others their age.You may see a sign by the side of the a road saying:"Dave Ellis 40today!",put there by Dave's friends. At about 65,people retire, and those who have reached this age are called"senior citizens".Few people live to be 100,so a 100th birthday is very special. In Britain people reaching this age may receive cards containing a printed message from the queen.

              (1) In Britain, how many times may a 9-year-old boy get bumped on his birthday? ______
              A. Eight B. Nine
              C. Ten D. Eleven
              (2) In the US,a 16-year-old boy ______ .
              A. must be given a car
              B. can get a driver's license
              C. can drink alcohol legally
              D. often has a big birthday party
              (3) In the last paragraph,the example"Dave Ellis 40today"shows ______ .
              A. the 40th birthday is very special
              B. many adults like lying about their age
              C. Dave's friends like playing jokes on him
              D. older people don't mind telling others their age now
              (4) If a person reaches 65,he can ______ .
              A. be called a"senior citizen"
              B. refuse to talk about his age
              C. receive a card from the Queen
              D. be invited to dinner with the Queen.

            • 4. Americans like to travel on their yearly holiday. Today, more and more travelers in the United States are spending nights at small houses or inns(客栈) instead of hotels. They get a room with breakfast the next morning.
Rooms for the night in private(私人的) homes with breakfast have been popular with travelers in Europe for many years. In the past five or ten years, these bed-and-breakfast places have become popular in the United States. Many of these American’s bed-and-breakfast inns are old historic buildings. Some bed-and-breakfast inns have only a few rooms, while others are much larger. Some inns do not provide telephones or televisions in the rooms, but others do.
Staying at a bed-and-breakfast inn is much different from staying at a hotel. Usually the cost is much less. Staying at an inn is almost like visiting someone’s home. The owners are glad to tell about the areas and the interesting places to visit. Many vacationers say that they enjoy the chance to meet local families.

Can you understand the beginning of this essay(短文)?

“My smmr hols wr CWOT. B4, we usd 2go2 NY 2C my bro, his GF & 3 kds FTF.”

The Scottish teacher who received it in class had no idea what the girl who wrote it meant. The essay was written in a form of English used in cell phone text messages. Text messages (also called SMS) through cell phones became very popular in the late 1990s. At first, mobile phone companies thought that text messaging would be a good way to send messages to customers, but customers quickly began to use the text messaging service to send messages to each other. Teenagers in particular enjoyed using text messaging, and they began to create a new language for messages called “texting.”

A text message is limited to 160 characters, including letters, spaces, and numbers, so messages must be kept short. In addition, typing on the small keypad of a cell phone is difficult, so it’s common to make words shorter. In texting, a single letter or number can represent(代表) a word, like “r” for “are”, “u” for “you,” and “2”"for “to.” Several letters can also represent a phrase, like “lol” for“laughing out loud.” Another characteristic(特征) of texting is the leaving out of letters in a word, like spelling “please” as “pls”.

Some parents and teachers worry that texting will make children bad spellers and bad writers. The student who wrote the essay at the top of this page said writing in that way was more comfortable for her. (The essay said, “My summer holidays were a complete waste of time. Before, we used to go to New York to see my brother, his girlfriend, and their three kids face to face.”)

Not everyone agrees that texting is a bad thing. Some experts say languages always develop, and this is just another way in which English is changing. Other people believe texting will disappear soon. New technology for voice messages may soon make text messages a thing of the past.

              Dear Coach,

I have been out of work for almost six months now and things are starting to get very tough for me. I am practically living out of my savings. I have been looking for a job, but things are really bad and 1 cannot find a single person who wants to hire me. I know that the main problem is that I do not have a degree. I want to go back to school and get my degree, but I also need a job now. I owe money to some people who have been helping me. Because I am out of work,I cannot pay them back. What do you think 1 should do? I need to find a job as quickly as possible, and want to know what else to do to get people to give me a chance to work for them.

              The Unemployed

              Dear Unemployed,

Before you get  yourself   in a really bad situation, you need to stop borrowing     money from people. If you continue doing that, you will be deep in debts and the situation will get even worse for you. The next thing you need to do is look for a job depending on your abilities, skills, and experience. By doing that, you will be increasing your chances of finding a job     that suitsyou best. And the last thing I will suggest is that you should stop feeling sorry for yourself and continue working hard to get a job that you need. Borrowing money, complaining, and feeling bad for your situation will  do no good to you.  Stay strong and get  out there and start showing the world what you can offer. I promise if you work hard and never give up, you will soon find the job that you are looking for. And while you are doing it, thing about getting your degree as well because it will help you to become more challenging. Try those tips.

              The Coach

A home school is a school in which parents educate their children at home instead of sending them out to a public or private school. Home schooling is legal throughout Europe, Australia, New Zealand, North America, Hong Kong, and South Africa. Home schooling is most popular in Canada, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Home schooling is legally accepted in all 50 states of the US, but each state has its own laws about it. Currently, it is estimated that over one million families teach their children at home. Most of these families include a breadwinner and a stay-at-home parent who does most of the teaching, although there are single parent families and double career families.

Home schooling education models range from unschooling to traditional classroom schooling. Unschooling is based on interest-based learning in which the child expresses interest in a particular subject, and the parents take steps to provide the materials for that subject.

In some places, the home school group shares in hiring a professional teacher to teach a particular subject. The group may also arrange field trips and sports activities with local private schools. These activities are intended to provide social skills for the students.

Home school families take advantage of technology and the Internet to supplement (补充) traditional teaching. Some home school families enroll (注册) their children in an online school or course as a supplement to their own teaching.

Some home school families teach their children through high school graduation. Others teach their children until they feel they are mature (成熟) enough to live independently.

In America colleges do recognize a home school diploma (文凭) , but most are more interested in high school transcripts(成绩报告单) and SAT and ACT scores. There are currently over 800 colleges that accept home-schooled graduates including Harvard, Yale, and Stanford.

In Britain, people have different attitudes to the police. Most people generally 41 them and the job they do—although there are certain people who do not believe that the police 42 have the power that they do.

What does a policeman actually do? It is not 43 job to describe. After all, a policeman has a number of jobs in 44 .A policeman often has to control traffic, either 45 foot in the centre of a town, or in a police car on the roads. Indeed, in Britain, he might be in the Traffic Police and spend all, or a lot of, his time 46 up and down main roads and motorways. A traffic policeman has to help keep the traffic moving, stop 47 motorists and help when there is an accident.

A policeman has to help keep the 48 , too. If there is a fight or some other disturbance, we 49 the police to come and restore order. And they often have to 50 situation at great risk to their own 51 .

We expect the police to solve crimes, of course, so an ordinary policeman, 52 he is not a detective(侦探),will often have to help 53 _and arrest criminals.

And 54 do we call when there is an emergency—an air crash, a 55 ,a road accident, or a robbery? We call the police. 56 a policeman has to be 57 to face any unpleasant emergency that may happen in the 58 world.

The police do an absolutely necessary job, they do it 59 well and I support them, but I do not envy policemen. I do not think that I could 60 do the job of a policeman.

In the United States, travel by air is much cheaper now than it was. There are many airlines that want new customers. They keep prices low. At some airports, there are up to 30 different airline companies.

Americans often live a long way from their families. There are young women from Chicago who are studying in Boston. There are old men in Sun City, Arizona, who were born in Minneapolis. These people often leave their families when they move to a new place. But sometimes, families want to be together again. Thanksgiving, in November, and Christmas in December are now two very important family holidays. Then, millions of people are in a hurry to fly home. Airports are crowded, and planes are full. It’s a problem for the people who work for the airlines.

The problems are growing all the time. Americans take hundreds of millions of flights every year. More and more planes want to land and take off at the airports. There are often “traffic jams” in the sky. Accidents can easily happen. Planes are often late, and passengers get angry.

What can the airlines do to make flying easier? They can build bigger airports, of course. But the airports will soon be filled up with more planes. They can make flying more expensive. But then one airline will cut prices again, and all of them will have to do the same. There really isn’t an answer to the problem. Americans have always loved to travel, and they always will. The roads will go on taking more and more cars, and more and more people will travel by air.

              A. five B. three C. four D. two
              (3) In this passage, the phrase “traffic jams” in the third paragraph means     .
              A. condition in which many road vehicles(车辆) are prevented from moving forward
              B. there are so many planes in the sky that movement is difficult
              C. many planes in the sky become lost
