Sports account for a growing amount of income made on the sales of commercial time by television companies. Many television companies have used sports to attract viewers from particular sections of the general public, and then they have sold audiences to advertisers.

An attraction of sport programs for the major U. S. media companies is that events are often held on Saturday and Sunday afternoons—the slowest time periods of the week for general television viewing.  Sport events are the most popular weekend programs, especially among male viewers who may not watch much television at other times during the week. This means the television networks are able to sell advertising time at relatively high prices during what normally would be dead time for programming.

Media corporations also use sports to attract commercial sponsors that might take their advertising dollars elsewhere if television stations did not report certain sports. The people in the advertising departments of major corporations realize that sports attract male viewers. They also realize that most business travelers are men and that many men make family decisions on the purchases of computers, cars and life insurance.

Golf and tennis are special cases for television programming. These sports attract few viewers, and the ratings(收视率)are unusually low. However, the audience for these sports is attractive to certain advertisers. It is made up of people from the highest income groups in the United States, to certain advertisers. It is made up of people from the highest income groups in the United States, including many lawyers and business managers. This is why television reporting of golf and tennis is sponsored by companies selling high-priced cars, business and personal computer, and holiday trips. This is also why the networks continue to carry these programs regardless of low ratings. Advertisers are willing to pay high fees to reach high-income consumers and those managers who make decisions to buy thousands of “company cars” and computer, with such viewers, these programs don’t need high ratings to stay on the air.

Many of you should not own dogs. It’s that simple. The reason is that, if you own a dog, you must train a dog, and many dog owners out there, it is safe to say, have little or no control over their dogs, because they do not train them.

Strong words? Maybe. But they are simple, honest words, as untrained dogs living in residential neighborhoods bark at will, run loose, and visit and damage neighboring properties with their owners’ blessings as they let them run on purpose.

Take note of the fact that you, the dog owner, cannot control your dog causing a continual nuisance(麻烦事)that damages the quality of life in your neighborhood. There’s nothing more annoying to most people than a dog that barks and nothing more confusing than trying to understand the deficient(有缺陷的)mentality of the dog owner who allows his dog to do so.

After all, the irresponsible dog owner hears the barking too, and so those who must put up with it are continually left wondering-what are they thinking, are they deaf?

Many dog owners believe it is not possible for their dog to be trained, an indication that the owners themselves lack self discipline, and most likely have never really tried to apply discipline to other issues in their lives, not with consistency, or that they are simply lazy and inattentive(疏忽的) to their own adult responsibilities at the expense of others.

Irresponsible dog owners, though, do train their dogs. A dog is a reflection of its owner. Whatever a dog does (run loose, bark at will, jump on guests entering the front door, soil neighboring lawns) is a result of the decisions of the owner. The choice not to do something is indeed a choice.

The good news is that with mere consistency(一致性), a dog can be trained rather quickly, in a couple of weeks if the owner takes his responsibility seriously. Again, that process will be a reflection of the ownerˈs behavior, and the primary ingredient(要素)in that behavior is not allowing the dog, not even once, to repeat the bad behavior without consequences when told and directed not to. You can stop your dog from barking with simple firm voice commands, direct eye contact, and force of will in a relatively short time, as long as you are consistent and a reasonably mature person.

Dogs, what’s more, love this training because pleasing you, their owner, is what they are all about. The upshot(结果,要点)will be that you have a more connected relationship you’re your dog, a better dog that is suitable for its environment.

              (1) Which is NOT the reason for dog owners to have little or no control over their dogs?

              A. They are lazy and unwilling to train their dogs.

              B. They think their dogs can act well without training.

              C. They lack self-control over many issues in daily life.

              D. They donˈt give enough attention to their responsibilities.

              (2) Whatˈs the authorˈs attitude towards owners of untrained dogs?

              A. Prejudiced. B. Unclear. C. Disapproving. D. Curious.

              (3) This article is mainly written to __________.

              A. instruct dog owners how to train dogs

              B. call on dog owners to train their dogs

              C. sing high praise for responsible dog owners

              D. analyze the relationship between dog owners and their dogs

              (4) It can be concluded from the passage that _________.

              A. responsible dog owners can put up with dogs’ barking

              B. irresponsible dog owners train their dogs to do something wrong on purpose

              C. we should not own dogs because they can damage the quality of our daily life

              D. whether a dog can be trained properly may depend on the dog ownerˈs behavior

Do you really know who you are? This is not a trick question but rather an honest understanding into the inner workings of each one of us. We usually share with our friends a piece of who we are, the piece that we want them to like or connect with. However, there is a secret, a hidden piece that doesn’t want to be noticed by others.

Our personal inner beliefs play a vital role in the way we think, act and live. They set us up to accept a belief and then it is the belief that separates our personal story. There are numerous people who have taken on the pain and suffering of their parents. Some have devoted their lives to living with lack; that is lack of love because they saw what they thought was love while in the crib(婴儿床) and it frightened them. Subconsciously(潜意识地) they made great efforts in their lives to avoid a similar experience.

Each one of us carries around with us our inner beliefs. If one of your beliefs is one that causes you to hold back from getting the perfect job or blocking love to come to you, that belief is a negative belief and one that needs to be dealt with if you are seeking a life of joy, contentment and personal success, whether it is emotional, spiritual, financial or physical.

Do not let your blocked or frozen emotions guide the way you want to lead your life. Now it is your time to finally become victorious over those past situations that have upset you during your entire life and become the winner you were born to be.

              (1) What is the author’s purpose with a question at the beginning?
              A. To explain who we are really.
              B. To introduce the main topic.
              C. To show the author’s opinion.
              D. To persuade people to share inner beliefs.
              (2) We can infer that the author believes inner beliefs _________.
              A. shape us
              B. block love to come
              C. shouldn’t be hidden
              D. make us sad and painful
              (3) What does the underlined word “it” in the third paragraph refer to?
              A. The love to come.
              B. The negative belief.
              C. The past painful experience.
              D. The life of joy, contentment and personal success.
              (4) Which of the following is the suggestion of the author?
              A. Sharing our inner beliefs with others.
              B. Ignoring blocked or frozen emotions.
              C. Dealing with our negative inner beliefs wisely.
              D. Having a deep understanding of our inner beliefs.

The Masai are a people who are constantly trying to preserve their own ways in an increasingly modem world. They live along the border of Kenya and Tanzania, moving their homes from time to time to follow their cattle, the source of their living.

The Masai have become known as a people of fighters, protecting their cattle against lions and other enemies. Only men are fighters. They wear long hair, which is colored red with clay. They can have more than one wife. Women build and take care of the home, fixing food and making clothing. Women and children keep their heads shaved. Women can also become elders, once they have given birth to four healthy children.

The Masai depend on their cattle for many parts of their life. They drink cow's milk and blood as a sacred drink. They use the cows' waste to cover and seal their homes. They don't kill their cattle for food, but if a cow is killed, then the horns (角) are used for containers; the hides are used to make shoes, clothing, ropes and bed coverings; and the bones are made into decorations.

The more cattle a man owns, the richer he is considered to be. A man who owns 50 or fewer cattle is considered poor. A "rich" man has a thousand or more. The cattle, though owned by the man, are considered to belong to the man's entire family. The family names the cattle and can recognize each animal's unique voice.

Masai houses are made from sticks and grass, but they are meant to be temporary, since the move of their cattle means that the Masai move as well.

Holidays are really important. Many of us will have childhood memories of summer holidays where we were taken away from home to experience new environments and learn in different ways.
But holidays are expensive and,for those on low wages or living on benefits, they are often unobtainable.Even the cheapest holidays require travel and other additional costs that are difficult for many families to meet.
For working parents, the long summer break can be a very difficult problem for childcare. When an annual leave allowance amounts to only five weeks, there is a need to spread this across the year.Couples can find themselves taking leave in turn in order to care for children who are on holiday. For some this makes even an affordable family holiday difficult.
The schools that I visit in Nottingham are full of experienced staff committed to giving our children a caring and inspiring learning environment. The number of children receiving free school meals is quite large in Nottingham and many schools have breakfast clubs to make sure that children get a healthy start to the day. Most schools undertake programs of group or individual educational support.Schools also have an important role in safeguarding children's welfare through the ongoing touch and support with their pupils.During the long summer holidays, much of this is missed.
While teachers are holidaying in the UK,many of their pupils spend the whole six weeks on the street where they live. The lack of free school meals for six weeks can result in pressure on a family budget and an inability to afford the inspiring experiences that help children to continue their learning.
In setting out its plans for a five-term year,Nottingham City Council (委员会)is seeking to reduce the summer holiday down to four and a half weeks, with a more balanced five terms of roughly eight weeks, each followed by a two-week break. We believe this will give real"down time"for school staff and pupils alike but will be short enough not to cause a real break in learning.
We acknowledge that this change may be difficult for some school staff, particularly whose own children are educated in other authorities. However, this must be weighed against the benefits for city children for whom we all have the greatest duty of care.
              (1) The passage is probably written by ______ .
              A. an experienced teacher
              B. a working parent
              C. an inspired student
              D. a city council member
              (2) The underlined word"they"in the second paragraph refers to" ______ '.
              A. environments
              B. holidays
              C. wages
              D. benefits
              (3) The plans for a shorter summer holiday will help students ______ .
              A. obtain the cheapest holidays without additional costs
              B. get a chance to spend six weeks a term with teachers in school
              C. benefit more from the caring and inspiring learning environment
              D. have more school days to receive free school meals
              (4) It can be inferred from the passage that ______ .
              A. working parents can enjoy a five-week break to care for their children
              B. the suggested plans for a five-term school year can hardly be carried out
              C. the long summer holiday gives teachers and students real"down time"
              D. some school staff will say"No"to the plans for a shorter summer holiday.

In a video posted online, a United Airlines passenger, who is an Asian, is shown with a bloody face after he was forced off an overbooked flight on April 9, 2017, making the already troubled airline earn more bad press.

Overbooking on flights happens all the time. Empty seats cost airlines money, so they offset(抵消) the number of passengers who miss flights by selling several more tickets. In this case, the problem arose because United (美联航) decided at the last minute to fly four employees to a connection point and needed four passengers to make way for them.

Normally, when there's an overbooking issue, airlines will offer compensation to the passengers who are willing to take a later flight. At first, they were offered $400, a hotel room for the night, and a flight the following afternoon. When no one took the offer, the amount was upped to $800. Still no volunteers. So a manager boarded the flight and informed passengers that four people would be selected to leave the flight.

A couple who were selected agreed to leave the plane voluntarily. However, A man refused, saying he was a doctor and had to see patients in the morning. An airline manager told him that security would be called if he did not leave. Then, security officers came to speak to him. Their conversation ended with the man being yanked (猛拉) from his seat onto the floor and dragged off, blood visible on his face.

This incident caused a stir in public. Many criticized United's racism and cruelty. Some even called for a boycott of the airline. The company is facing increasing pressure around the world. United is also suffering from broader worries among investors about US airline performance.

              (1) What can we learn about overbooking on flights?
              A. It rarely occurs.
              B. It always causes problems.
              C. It makes more money.
              D. It's for employees.
              (2) What do airlines usually do first when there's an overbooking issue?
              A. Select some passengers randomly and ask them to leave.
              B. Call the security and force some passengers to leave.
              C. Find some volunteers and offer them compensation.
              D. Require the last few passengers not to board the plane.
              (3) Why did the man refuse to leave the plane?
              A. He was unsatisfied with the compensation.
              B. He had got an appointment the next day.
              C. He was frightened by the security officers.
              D. He was badly injured and was bleeding.
              (4) What can be learned from the last paragraph?
              A. The company's reputation is greatly damaged.
              B. The company has already lost many investors.
              C. Incidents like this will not happen again.
              D. No passengers will take United's flights.

Who knows about sleep? Astronauts. They have to. Their bodies are cut off from the outside world that reminds us what time it is. But actually, it’s even worse than that. An astronaut reported in his diary that he was likely to make mistakes on days following an unusually late bedtime.

So NASA started doing some serious research. They quickly realized that we’re a slave to the outside world. Without light and darkness, we’re unable to regulate (管理) sleep times.

Because of modern technology, we’re all living more like astronauts now. Light is no longer a function of the sun, but of always-on indoor lights, TV and computer screens. Temperature no longer follows a cycle of cooling at night and warming during the day. Is it any wonder that a third of American have sleep problems?

Maybe you think this doesn’t affect you--- or at least not much. You’re wrong. Research done on non-astronauts has shown the same thing. After two weeks of six hours of sleep a night, you’re drunk. By the end of two weeks, the six-hour sleepers behaved as badly as those who hadn’t slept for 24 hours.

But what did they say when asked how they felt? “It’s not affecting me.” So if you are performing poorly because of sleep problems, you may have no idea. This is a real problem.

So what answers did NASA come up with?

Take an hour to calm down before bed. Yes, you’re busy. But your time is not more valuable than an astronauts’.

Keep your bedroom dark, cool and free from noise. Even if you think “the light doesn’t affect you” or “the noise isn’t that bad”, it can still affect sleep quality.

Another advice: forget the alarm clock in the morning; set an alarm to remind you to go to bed at night. When it goes off, finish up any work on the computer, and turn off any unnecessary lights. This prevents you from cheating yourself on sleep and allows you to wake up naturally.

Applications for degree courses beginning this autumn were up by 15% this January, according to UCAS, the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service. A spokesman for the Royal Economic Society said applications to do economics at A-level were also up.
Professor John Beath, the president of the society and a leading lecturer at St Andrews University, said his first-year lectures—which are open to students from all departments—were drawing crowds of 400, rather than the usual 250.
“There are a large number of students who are not economics majors, who would like to learn something about it. One of the things I have done this year is to relate my teaching to contemporary events in a way that one hasnˈt traditionally done,” he added.
