It’s not an urban legend: crime rates do in fact in the summer in the U.S. A study found that, with the exception of robbery and auto theft, rates of all violent and property crimes are higher during the summer than during other months. The study examined data collected during 8 years, which included violent and property crimes that did not result in death, both reported and not reported to the police.

The data show that, though the national crime rate dropped by 70 percent during recent years, seasonal spikes in summer remain. In some cases those spikes are 12 percent higher than rates during seasons in which the lows occur. The phenomenon confuses many criminologists, and they wonder why.

Some reason that increased temperatures, which drive many out of doors and leave windows open in their homes, raise the amount of time when homes are left empty. Others point to the effect of students on summer vacation who are otherwise occupied with schooling during other season, while some argue that suffering heat-induced discomfort simply makes people more aggressive and likely to act out.

Although these elements possess certain persuasive power, their rationality is called into question when cases in winter are put on the map. Why aren’t the rates in winter falling if heat related factors are to blame for the summer spike? Contrarily, the matter should be viewed from social and economic angles rather than on solar terms.

Numerous studies have shown that rates of criminal behavior among young adults drop when their communities provide them with other ways to spend their time and earn money. This was found to be true in Los Angeles, where gang activity was reduced when community centers for teens were thriving and active. And generally speaking, the connection between economic inequality and crime is robustly documented for the U.S. And why summer sees a worse situation? It’s probably because it’s even harder for youngster to land jobs that provide for life necessities.

So if officials want to address the summer spike in crime, they may act differently instead of aiming straight at crimes. Simply upgrading security and severely punishing offences almost produce void effects. Instead, be open to various options and they will find that development of job hunting agencies or community professional training centers are accompanying the drop of crime rate without seasonal exceptions. After all, bread always comes first for everyone.

              (1) According to the author, what is the key reason for the seasonal spike of crime rates?

              A. Increased temperature left houses easier for attacks.

              B. People’s economic needs are not satisfied by the society.

              C. Youngsters find it hard to release energies at school.

              D. The hot environment makes people more likely to be angered.

              (2) What can be done to fight seasonal rise of crimes?

              A. Take measure to encourage youth employment.

              B. Enhance the safety mechanism during the summer.

              C. Frighten would-be criminals through harsh punishments.

              D. Lengthen the school time to hold students in school during summer.

              (3) Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

              A. Solar terms are responsible for the summer crime spike.

              B. Crime rates in summer fall by 58 percent in the U.S

              C. Criminal activities fall in Los Angeles because of positive community programs.

              D. The crimes rates in winter are low due to low mobility in the season.

Right now,62 million girls worldwide are not in school. They're receiving no reading,no writing,no math-none of the basic skills they need to provide for themselves and their families, and contribute fully to their countries.
Often, understandably, this issue is considered as a matter of result of a failure to invest enough money in educating girls. We can solve this problem, the argument goes,if we provide more scholarships and safe transportation and build more school bathrooms for girls. And it's true that investments like these are important for addressing our global girls'education crisis. But we cannot solve our girls'education problem until we deal with the broader cultural beliefs and practices that can help cause this crisis and make it continue.
We know that legal and cultural change is possible because we've seen it countries around the world, including our own.A century ago, women in American couldn't even vote.Decades ago,it was perfectly legal for employers to refuse to hire women. But in each generation, brave people-both men and women-stood up to change these practices. They did it through individual acts like taking their bosses to court and even through national movements that brought changes.
Cultural changes like these can encourage countries to make greater investments in girls'education. And when they do,that can cause a powerful effect that can cause even greater cultural and political progress for women.Girls who are educated marry later.Educated girls also can earn higher salaries. And when educated girls became healthy, financially secure, empowered women, they're far better equipped to achieve their needs and wishes, and challenge unjust laws and harmful practices and beliefs.
But for me,this issue isn't just about politics or economics---for me,this is a moral issue. As I've traveled the world,I've met so many of these girls. They're so hungry to realize their promise. They walk for hours each day to school, learning at rickety desks in bare concrete classrooms. These girls aren't different from my daughters or any of our daughters.None of us here in the USA would accept this for our own daughters and granddaughters,so why would we accept it for any girl on our planet?
As a first lady,a mother, and a human being,I cannot walk away from these girls, and I plan to keep raising my voice on their behalf for the rest of my life.I plan to keep talking about this issue here at home, because I believe that all of us-men and women,in every country on this planet-have a moral obligation to give all of these girls a future worthy of their promise and their dreams.

              (1) According to the passage,millions of girls ______ .
              A. skip math classes for no reason

              Why doesnˈt Anybody Copy Apple?

Apple’s products are the envy of the world. They have been spectacularly successful and are widely imitated, if not copied. The minute Apple crystallizes a product, everyone knows how to compete. This idea that the basis of competition is set by Apple and then the race is on to climb the path of improvement is unquestionable. When Apple releases a product that defines a category or dramatically changes the structure of an industry, it becomes obvious what needs to be built.Apple releases a product that defines a category or dramatically changes the structure of an industry and it becomes obvious what needs to be built. But why everyone wants to copy Apple’s products but nobody wants to copy being Apple?

I can think of two reasons. Firstly, Apple is not worth copying because it’s not successful; secondly, Apple is successful but Apple cannot be copied because its success is a magical process.

There is a great deal of evidence for the first hypothesis. The idea of Apple being successful is not something reflected in its stock price. Being valued indeed lower than the average company in the S&P(标准普尔)500 indicates that to whatever degree Apple was successful in the past, it’s not seen by the vast majority of observers as successful in the future. Why should one bother copying Apple if it results in being punished with a low valuation? You work really hard at innovation and then that innovation becomes commoditized(商品化)very quickly. Why should one bother?

When asking innovation practitioners what makes Apple successful, the answers regarding the cause of this success border on the mythical. The climax of this hypothesis is the “chief-sorcerer” theory of success which places one magician, like Steven Jobs, in charge of casting all the right spells(符咒).

What about Apple’s own opinion of what makes it tick? Tim Cook refers to a great team and integration of hardware, software and services as unique Apple advantages. It’s a better explanation. Integration is something that can take a long time, but it is possible with great effort. A few companies are starting to make moves in that direction, but efforts are half-hearted. There is no “move the Earth” panic to become an integrated company from Samsung, Google or Microsoft.

My own suspicion is that Apple is more aware of what makes it special than it lets out. However, as Tim points out, it’s not a formula. It’s complex, it’s subtle, but it’s not magic. It’s a process that requires a degree of faith and courage.

              (1) When a new product of Apple comes out, often it ______.

              A. is soon overtaken by imitated products

              B. puts itself in an unbeatable position

              C. starts a revolution of an industry

              D. ruins an industry dramatically

              (2) According to the passage, other companies don’t “copy being Apple” because _____.

              A. being Apple takes more than time and efforts

              B. they have no access to relevant resources

              C. it’s hard to find a powerful magician

              D. Apple is not a successful company

              (3) We can infer from Para. 5 that _____.

              A. other companies are dedicated to integration

              B. Apple will hold the leading position of this industry

              C. Apple itself is fully aware of its unique advantages

              D. other companies don’t have a great team as Apple does

              (4) What does the author think of Tim Cook’s statement?

              A. Acceptable. B. Disappointing.
              C. Unquestionable. D. Convincing.

Dogs Trust is taking to the streets trying to stop thousands of puppies(小狗) being bought without enough consideration this Christmas, only to be cruelly abandoned soon after. Twelve artworks have been designed to describe the shocking reasons given to Dogs Trust, across its 20 Rehoming Centres in the UK, by owners who no longer wish to care for their dogs. Every day Dogs Trust takes in dogs of all shapes and sizes, often accompanied by unbelievable reasons why their owners are giving them up. The main reason given by owners is that the dogs need more attention than they can give. Other reasons include:

              “He kept running after frogs.”

“He looked different after we walked him in the rain.”

“I’m worried our baby will copy him.”

“My dog is old and going to die soon.”

              “He barks every morning.”

“She seemed hungry all the time and followed me around the house.”

Sadly, the huge increase in online pet selling has led to many dealers turning to the Internet to advertise their puppies. Giles Webber, Operations Director says,“With more and more puppies flooding the Christmas market, all is available at the click of a button - it is more necessary than ever that our message “A dog is For Life, Not Just For Christmas” is planted in people’s minds.”

“We hope that this activity will encourage people to think twice before buying a puppy. Our aim is to make sure that the artwork will be the only abandoned dogs the British public will see on their streets this Christmas period.” Webber added.

As anyone who freelances (做自由职业) knows, there are lots of advantages of working at home alone. But there are drawbacks too, like the potential loneliness. No wonder co-working spaces are becoming so popular: they permit self-employed individuals to feel like they are part of all office environment, while making them get some work done too. But renting a co-working space does cost money.

Now a Swedish project is aiming to change that by turning people’s under-used homes into temporary co-working spaces, available to freelancers for free. Hoffice was started by freelancers Christofer Gradin Franzen and Johline Zandra about a year ago in Stockholm when they invited a few people into their home office to work together. It was a great success, and the project has since spread to a number of cities in Europe, North andSouth America,Australia,Indiaand Japan. Anyone can sign up and offer their home space as a free co-working space, or go find a Hoffice near them.

On a Hoffice day, everyone arrives and starts work at a certain hour. After 45 minutes, everyone gets up to take a break, stretch, do qigong or yoga for 10 to 15 minutes. Afterwards, people can gather around again, and re-state their intentions and goals for the rest of the work day, as a way to motivate each other. Meals can be eaten together at a certain hour, potluck-style(家常饭)or by bringing your own lunch.

This process creates an encouraging and supportive work environment. As some freelancers describe, “By working at Hoffice, we give ourselves and each other the gift to spend our days in a social working environment, where we are extremely productive without ignoring our other human needs. We also make sure to give us and each other what we need to feel calm, happy, inspired and creative during the working day. ”

So Hoffice is not just about sharing space;itˈs also about a free exchange of ideas. And perhaps the best thing is that Hoffices are free to use.

              C. What people share at Hoffice.

Birthdays are especially important to the very young and the very old.On their birthdays, people receive birthday cards and birthday presents from their family and friends.Children's cards often have a large number on them showing how old they are.Cards for adults have pictures of flowers or scenery,or cartoons.Inside there is usually a simple greeting, such as"Happy Birthday"or"Many Happy Returns Of The Day".
In the US children who have their birthdays during the school year take a cake to school and have a small party with their class. In Britain children sometimes get bumped ( lifted off the ground horizontally and put down again sharply) by their friends, the same number of times as their age.

A concern about only one child is whether one child necessarily means a lonely child. Many parents of only child feel guilty of their decision to have only child. There are no other children in the family for the child to associate with, which may lead to the child feeling lonely at times.

Another common argument against having just one child may be more spoiled than one with siblings. Many people believe that a single child will not have learned to negotiate with others, and respect the give-and-take involved in many relationships. Some think this may leave the child less capable of interacting well people his or her own age.

Despite these arguments, the number of parents choosing to have only one child is increasing in the world. For some single-child parents, the pressures of devoting time and energy to a second child can result in them selecting to have no more children. For other parents, the financial burden of having a second child may be the major consideration. Another important consideration is the increasing age at which women give birth to children.

Advocates of single-child families argue that there are advantages for the child as well as the parents. With just one child, the parents can give, and the child can receive, more quality time and attention.

However, there is no simple answer to the question of whether or not to have a second child. The circumstances affecting each set of parents are unique. The important thing, in the end, is to make a decision that both the wife and the husband feel confident.

Are you at least 17 years old? Do you weighmore than 110 pounds? Do you consider yourselffairly healthy?

If you answered yes to all of these questions, you should bedonating(捐赠) blood every twomonths. In my survey of my schoolmates, I foundthat only 50 percent of them have ever donatedblood and that only 1 out of 13 of them donateregularly. Thelack(缺少) of blood donors is aserious problem that requires immediate action.

According to the American Red Cross Webpages, in the United States alone someone receivesablood transfusion(输血) once every threeseconds. People whobenefit from(受益于)donations include cancer patients as well as babies. The need for blood never takes a vacation andneither should donors.

Let me tell you about Brooke, athree-year-old girl with cancer. Brooke has spentabout half of her life in the hospital receivingtreatments. Her treatment will require about 500units of blood in total, of which only 250 unitshave been replaced. She still needs the other halfof the totalamount(数量) to continuehertreatment. If she doesnˈt receive this blood, shewill not live to start kindergarten.

Examples like Brookeˈs are becoming all toocommon these days, with only 1 in 20 Americansdonating blood and this number keeps droppingeach year. These facts are extremely worryingconsidering that nearly half of us here will needblood sometime in our lives.

You can now see the seriousness of theproblem with the lack of blood donations.Fortunately, it is a problem that can be easilysolved. Each and every one of you can be part ofthe solution. All you have to do is go to the nearestRed Cross and donate your blood.
