Which boy hasn’t dreamed of being a cool secret agent (特工)? The wonderful fighting abilities and the world-saving adventures are much more colourful than most people’s everyday lives. Well, Cody Banks is just like any other boy, except that he is not just dreaming. He has a big secret his friends never know about. He was trained to be a spy (间谍) by a special CIA programme, which was made to look like a summer camp. He learned high-speed driving, hand-to-hand fighting and the use of high-tech tools.

After proving he could become a young hero by saving a baby from a runaway car, Banks gets his first real task. He must make friends with a popular girl at school, Natalie Connors. Then, he must spy on her father, a scientist who has developed a dangerous technology. Banks must stop a group of bad people from forcing Natalie’s father into using the technology to endanger the world.

The CIA may have taught him first-class self-defence moves, but they didn’t show him how to talk to girls. Banks has zero ability when it comes to dealing with girls. How can he get around his problem and get an invitation to the girl’s upcoming birthday party? Will he finally become Natalie’s boyfriend and find out whatever he can about her father’s work?

Agent Cody Banks has everything that young people are interested in: big explosions, breathtaking performances and funny girl-dating experiences. It was listed No.2 in the American box office last week.

Google, the leading company in self-driving technology, has completely renewed its development program. Previously, Google had cars built by other companies, but now it will start building its own cars.

For the past four years, Google’s technicians had been working on a way to return control to the human driver’s steering wheel (方向盘) in a dangerous situation. However, Google now says that the switch from automation to human control will not be possible anytime soon. Google’s heads realized that relying on a human that may be reading, working, or sleeping to take over in an emergency wouldn’t work. So what’s the solution?

Google has started to build a series of 100 experimental electric cars that look like a Smart car or Fiat 500. The only difference? There is no steering wheel, gas pedal (油门) and brake. The only things a human passenger controls are a red “e-stop” button for panic stops and a start button. The car’s face is designed to make it seem friendly and help people accept self-driving technology.

Google employees had taken part in long experiment, in which they used self-driving vehicles to work every day. There were no crashes. This is a major change from competing self-driving projects. Mercedes Benz, BMW and Volvo have all developed some self-driving cars, but none completely eliminate the driver. For example, the Mercedes Benz cars will stop if the driver takes his hands off the wheel for over ten seconds.

Google will limit its early cars to a top speed of 25 miles per hour for safety reasons. These cars are designed to drive in or around cities, not on highways. However, a Google engineer commented that once their safety has been proven, there will be no limit to the speed. In the near future, Google’s self-driving cars may make our roads much safer, and of course drivers may feel more relaxed on the way.

              (1) Before they renewed the program, Google’s technicians tried to _______.

              A. switch from human control to self-driving

              B. build self-driving cars of their own company

              C. let human drivers deal with dangerous situations

              D. change people’s habit of driving in an emergency
              (2) We can infer from the passage that Google’s electric cars _______.

              A. are equipped with an unusual steering wheel

              B. are designed to be environmentally friendly

              C. has made great contributions to road safety

              D. just offer two control buttons for passengers
              (3) The underlined word “eliminate” in Paragraph 4 can best be replaced by “_______”.

              A. trap                         B. employ
              C. remove                    D. dismiss
              (4) What would be the best title for the passage?

A 13-year-old American boy on Saturday became the youngest climber to conquer Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain.

Jordan Romero from Big Bear, California, climbed up the 8,850-meter summit (峰顶) from the Tibetan side. On the same day, a Nepali (尼泊尔的) man, Apa Sherpa, broke his own world record of climbing Everest when he reached the summit for the twentieth time. Apa Shepa’s team set off from Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, last month, heading for the base camp (大本营) on the Chinese side of the mountain.

“The team has just called in and believe that they are standing on top of Mt. Everest,” Romero’s blog said. “Their dreams have now come true. Everyone is happy.”
