Nearly 19 percent of teachers of color(有色人种教师) left their jobs after the 2014-2015 school year. Some left for personal reasons like taking care of their families. But 50 percent said they left because they were dissatisfied with their employment situation, such as poor working conditions, student discipline problems and large class sizes. Thus, taking immediate measures to improve it is our top priority.

For years, researchers have proved the benefits of increasing the share of minority teachers in schools, especially as our public school system has turned to one that is made up mostly of minority students. Teachers of color, who are more likely than their white counterparts to choose to work in racially diverse(多种多样的) schools, offer particular benefits to their students. Graduation rates increase among minority students when they are taught by racially similar educators, research shows. They can also serve as positive role models, and their presence reduces the chance of racial discrimination at school.

The Shanker Institute report suggests that the rate of minority teacher hiring is not the whole problem. The problem is what happens after these teachers enter the classroom. These teachers often work in high-poverty rural schools. They are more likely to have less-desirable working conditions.

Diversity is a key component to equality and opportunity. Where there’s a diverse teaching workforce, all kids thrive. So solutions must be found at once to turn this trend around. Firstly, schools should develop mentorship programs that support minority teachers once they are in the classroom. Secondly, more money should be spent in improving working conditions in these schools. Of course, school headmasters should also be evaluated on their ability to retain teachers of color.

The next time you eat a piece of chocolate, be sure to enjoy it, because according to two of the world’s largest chocolate makers—Mars Inc and Barry Callebaut, the treat may soon be in short supply. The problem? We are consuming the candy at a faster pace than farmers can grow cocoa. The manufacturers say that in 2013, people consumed 70,000 tons more cocoa than was produced. Experts say that this is the worstsupply-demand imbalancethey have experienced in more than 50 years.

Parts of the reason for the condition is the large reduction in supply, caused by a continuous drought in the west African countries of Ivory Coast and Ghana, where more than 70 percent of the world’s cocoa is produced. Additionally, a certain disease known as frosty pod has destroyed 30 to 40 percent of global cocoa production. As a result, many farmers have turned to more profitable and easier grown crops like corn. This means that even if conditions improve, cocoa production may never get back to normal.

Meanwhile, the world is only getting hungrier for chocolate. The biggest increase in demand is from the residents of emerging market countries like India. Though their consumption is nowhere close to the amount European devour, their newly acquired amount for the treat , is making a huge dent(凹痕) in an already tight market.

There is also the growing desire for dark chocolate, which contains more than 70 percent cocoa compared to normal chocolates. Experts believe that if consumption continue at this pace, cocoa deficits (差额) could swell to one million tons by 2020 and to an even more worrisome, two million tons, by 2030.

Not surprisingly, cocoa prices have risen by 60% since 2012, a cost that manufacturers have offset by raising the prices of everyone’s favorite candy. As the situation worsens, the price of chocolate can only rise—so be sure to enjoy piece of the sweet treat, like it is your last!

Harvard recently stopped calling its dormitory leaders “house masters”. Why? Many felt that the word reminded them of slavery. And students at the University of California-Santa Cruz protested last year after burritos(墨西哥卷饼)were served at a science fiction club meeting. The reason? Some felt serving the food connected the term “illegal alien” with Hispanic(西班牙和葡萄牙后裔的) immigration and culture.

Why are these actions, considered by many to be overreactions, taking place on campuses across the US? Maybe the actions are for the sake of political correctness (PC). Merriam- Webster defines “politically correct” as “agreeing with the idea that people should be careful not to use language or behave in a way that could offend a particular group of people”. Although political correctness arose to deal with the matter of keeping the peace, a debate over whether it’s of benefit or harm to society has sprung up in recent years.

Some believe that PC culture aims to be respectful to others. A study done by Cornell University in 2014 found that when groups of college students talked about PC ideas, they tended to be more creative and could more easily speak their minds in mixed-gender groups than groups who hadn’t discussed political correctness. “I think it forces us to reevaluate what we consider to be acceptable speech… I see it as something that is actually freeing because it can allow you to see things in a new light,” said Jon Paul Jurasas, a history teacher atNazareth Academyin Illinois, US.

However, some believe that political correctness has become a big problem in the country. In American high schools, the idea of “trigger warnings” has recently become popular. When books, videos and other forms of media may contain sensitive material, teachers warn students in advance. Nazareth Academy English teacher Jessica Radogno said that trigger warnings shouldn’t stop students from reading books likeHuckleberry Finn(which contains racist ideas) because they are important pieces of literature and history. “I think that going too far with political correctness can sometimes cleanse things a little too much to the point where it’s not realistic,” Radogno said. “People need to be aware of the fact that there are very different views on things and have to understand that.”

Experts have different opinions on the issue of political correctness. Some feel the culture has brought the country a new attitude of tolerance and respect, while others believe it has taken away the right to free speech. No matter which side you take, you should be aware of the dangers in the strong beliefs of both sides, according to Shu-Ju Ada Cheng, a sociology professor at DePaul University. “It is a problem if someone gets aggressive when people disagree with him or her. This is true whether someone is politically correct or incorrect,” Cheng said. “Keep in mind that there is a difference between challenging the idea of unequal power… and forbidding others from speaking.”
