When first entered, Vanak Restaurant does not look like much of a restaurant, but once the pleasant smells of kabobs (烤肉串) hit the senses, you are incapable of calling it anything less.
Owned by a local couple, this Persian restaurant has an inviting, homelike atmosphere that many restaurants lack. The space is small with only a few dining tables and nearly no decoration, but the environment is truly charming.Lying in a hardly noticeable street corner, the restaurant still attracts all customers, especially those experienced in the delights of Middle Eastern cooking.
A common sight is that of old Persian men sitting in the corner talking loudly about world topics, watching news events on TV, drinking a black tea known as Persian chai, reading local Persian newspapers all the while and trying to finish off their plate piled with food.
The variety of food at the restaurant is limited, but the amount of each dish is fairly large. Most of the meals can serve two people and are under $10, so not only is it affordable but practical as well. The food, especially appeals to health-conscious eaters because each dish is very healthy, made with limited fat and oil and served straight off the grill (烤肉架).The main dish that the restaurant is popular for is its kabobs, which are different styles of grilled meat. One delicious and extremely healthy dish is the Joojeh Kabob, which is made of grilled chicken pieces served with either rice or bread. Another great kabob is the Chelo Kabob, a kabob consisting of grilled beef.
Although the restaurant is small, the atmosphere and the food is delicious. It is a place that should not be overlooked.

              C. is crowded with dining tables

Today I went to Sam's school in the UK.It was different from my school in China.
The uniforms were a lot more suitlike.Girls wore gray skirts and white shirts, boys wore smart gray trousers, and everyone wore the school tie.
We arrived at 8:30am for registration, and lessons began at 9am.Like all 15 to16 yearolds in the UK,Sam is taking her GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) exams this summer.Once you've completed these, you can choose whether to do two more years of school and take your"Alevel exams",which you need to go to university; do a vocational qualification (职业资格); or leave school and try to get a job.Everyone has to take GCSE English language, math ("maths"in the UK) and science.Because Sam wants to go to university to become a lawyer, she's doing nine GCSEs in total. She'll need to get top grades, the highest being an A.
Some of Sam's lessons were a bit strange for me.We were reading Shakespeare in the English lesson, and there were all sorts of oldfashioned words like"thou"and"thee"to mean"you".In history we studied 20th Century China. It was strange hearing a foreign side of history and hearing English people trying to say all our Chinese names!
Classes were a lot smaller than in China; there were only between 15and 30students in each class! They were also a lot more relaxed.Male teachers were called"Sir"and female teachers"Miss"out of respect, but everyone shouted out answers and waved their hands in lessons. It was more like a debate than a class.A bell rang at the end of each lesson and everyone leapt up to go to the next class.
At break we bought crisps and biscuits in the canteen.Lunch was later than in China-at 1o'clock.We had big plates of"shepherd's pie"-minced meat topped with mashed potato-together with peas and carrots. For dessert there was hot sweet rice called"rice pudding"with jam in it.
It was good that I'd had a decent lunch, because at Sam's school,Monday afternoons are taken up with sport.I had my first introduction to the British game of netball-a bit like basketball.Luckily I'd had a quick look in the rulebook (规则手册) before I tried to join in the game.

              (1) Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage? ______
              A. Not everyone in Sam's school wore the school tie.

              D. Because it is a custom.

There's another reason to clean those running shoes.Energetic exercise may help prevent vision(视力) loss, according to a pair of studies from the US Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The research offers hope for people trying to find ways of eye diseases.
"Besides getting eye exams, people can take a more active part in protecting their eyesight,"says Paul Williams, who carried out the research."The studies suggest that people can perhaps reduce their danger of these diseases by taking part in a fitness treatment that includes enough exercise."
Cataract(白内障) is the leading cause of blindness.More than one half of people in the US over the age of 65 suffer from some form of cataracts.
Diseases have several known reasons, such as sunlight exposure and diabetes(糖尿病) in the case of cataracts. Now,it appears that enough exercise may be one way to treat the disease.
To carry out the research,Williams examined information collected in the National Runners'Health Study, which he set up in 1991 to find out the health help of running.
In this case,he followed about 29,000 male runners and 12,000 female runners for more than seven years.Of these people,733 men reported being diagnosed(诊断) with cataracts filled out at the end of the study.Too few women reported cataracts to follow.
Men who ran more than 5.7 miles per day had a 35 percent lower risk of developing cataracts than men who ran less than 1.4 miles per day.The study also studied men's 10 kilometer race performances, which is a good sign of complete fitness.

Do you jump out of bed early, wide awake and ready to start your day?If so,you would be considered an"early bird".Perhaps, though, you hate the sound of your alarm clock each morning and have little energy until afternoon. If that's the case, you're probably a"night owl".
Most of us fall into one of these two groups, but what makes us this way?And is one better than the other? There are different opinions.
Traditionally, early risers have been praised as hardworking. On the other hand, those who prefer to sleep in and get up late are considered lazy. But even in the 21st century, most people still believe the early bird catches the worm.
Yet some scientists now believe"night owls"can really focus longer and produce more than early risers.
Research has found that the early bird does not always get the worm.In a Belgian study, both"morning people"and"evening people"were watched during their normal asleep and awake routines(常规).After 10hours of being awake, the"evening people"became more alert.However.the"morning people"became sleepy and less focused.Researchers believe the reason for this difference is that night owls receive a lastminute increase of energy from their brains. This added energy allows them to stay alert for longer periods of time.
Environment, lifestyle, activities and childhood routines all may have an effect on sleeping habits, yet genetics(遗传学)may play the biggest role.
It is possible to change your sleeping habits through regular bedtimes, early exercise and by avoiding midnight snacks. But if you're happy rising early or staying up late, you're probably doing what works best for your own personal body clock.

              (1) How does the author introduce the subject? ______
              A. By asking questions.
              B. By showing research results.
              C. By telling a story.
              D. By describing two different lifestyle.
              (2) What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 really mean? ______
              A. "Night owls"can focus longer than"early birds".
              B. "Night owls"are as hardworking as"early birds".
              C. Early risers have an advantage over late risers.
              D. Early to bed, early to rise is good for health.
              (3) What did the researchers find in a Belgian study? ______
              A. Early risers can think clearly after being awake for 10hours.

Many people delight in gossiping(说闲话), and the more they know about someone else, the more powerful they feel—at someone else's expense. While at the end of the day no good will come of it and someone is bound to get hurt, and try telling that to someone who's excited to relay the latest piece of juicy news.

Most people have some awareness when saying something we know we shouldn't. As it is slipping out of our mouths, we start to feel uncomfortable. We have a sense of conflict between finishing the sentence that may draw attention but won't make anyone look good, and awkwardly stopping mid-story. There are those who after spreading gossip end with a well-meaning, “I shouldn't have said anything and I can't really tell you how I heard it.” Not any better. Once out, they may feel good for a moment, but they're just as likely to regret their decision. By this time, it is too late.

That is to say, some people just don't notice or pay attention to the voice in their head saying, “Don't” and others actively ignore it.In the end, the results are the same. With our lack of sensitivity, we say things that should never be said and often don't stop long enough to realize that we have not only hurt others, but we have unintentionally hurt ourselves. Given this, why do people gossip? For some, it feels good to be in control of knowledge that others may not know.

Talking about others can become a habit and unless you work hard to break it, you may discover that others distance themselves from you. After all, if you can't be trusted to keep secrets and not share information, people may choose not to have you as their friend. We have two ears and just one mouth. When in doubt, it is always better to listen than to speak.

              (1) What's the closest meaning of the underlined word “relay”?

              A. Show.        B. Cover.      C. Spread.     D. Get.

              (2) Which statement is NOT the reason for people being conscious of saying something we know we shouldn't?

              A. They feel not good when they are leaking out it.

              B. They are interested in gossiping.

              C. They have a sense of conflict during saying it.

              D. They probably regret to say it.

              (3) Why do people say something that should never be said and can hurt others?

              A. Because they want to hurt others.

              B. Because they hate this kind of people.

              C. Because they know well each other.

              D. Because they are lack of sensitivity.

              (4) From the last paragraph, we can know that ____.

              A. we should speak less and listen more

              B. we can't keep secrets

              C. we haven't many friends

              D. we should talk about others as many as possible

The library is one of the most popular places at a western university.Students turn to it for research, conversations about class, and many other services.

Compared with Chinese libraries, college libraries in the US and UK tend to offer more resources.A postgraduate at Yale University can borrow as many as 225 books at a time.

In addition to borrowing books, there are online and electronic resources. These include a database search of popular and academic material, such as LexisNexis Academic, which offers items from newspapers and magazines.

Although books and articles are the items that students ask for most frequently, some libraries provide audio and video recordings, maps and sheet music(活页乐谱).At some schools, teachers and tutors put electronic copies of their teaching PPTs on the library web to give easier access for students.

Another useful service in western college libraries is the Interlibrary Loan. This allows a student at one school to borrow books from another school. The loan request is made through the studentˈs college library, which gets the book, gives it to the user, and arranges for its return.

Technology has brought more services to students and has made libraries attractive. Some universities have services for students to send messages through the computer or mobile texts to ask the library staff for information.

Earlier this year,Harvard University introduced a new Scan and Deliver service, allowing students to make requests for parts of books and articles.Requests made through the system are handled by library staff. The student receives an e-mail with an Internet link to the scanned pages. The service is free and all material comes within four days.

It used to be that libraries didnˈt allow food or drinks. But that rule is changing and many of them now contain a café so students can spend as much time as they want in the library.

Actually, some US university libraries are now all-night affairs,or have at least one study room open all night.

In this world, it may seem impossible to find happy thoughts to occupy your mind. Many people are caught up in work and the everyday tasks that take so much energy to complete. The truth is that when you fill your mind with positive, happy thoughts, it actually gives you a better quality of life and helps you cope with those everyday stresses.
Begin with a quiet setting or put on soft, relaxing music. Take ten deep breaths, breathe in through your nose and slowly blow out through your mouth. Ten to twenty minutes is a good amount of time to clear your mind of the pressures of the day. This is also a great way to calm your mind and find that inner peace that seemed to disappear while driving in morning traffic and solving all the problems of the day.
When you think happy thoughts, it brings the positive attitude to the surface. Each day think of those in your life who bring you joy. List them in your mind, one by one. Your family, your friends and the kind gentleman that held the door open for you today. Look for the joy in your day rather than focus on the negative(消极的).This kind of thought process builds a positive attitude. This attitude will become a habit and will make your mind focus on the pleasant people you have encountered.
When you think of others rather than yourself, you can't help but feel better and experience happy thoughts. When you bring joy to others, it is returned to you over and over again. Think of the elderly neighbor lady and take her a bouquet(花束).Regardless of the act of kindness, giving from your heart will make up a strong character and give you great happiness.
Filling your mind with happy thoughts may be a challenge on many days; however, taking the time to concentrate on the good things can be a life changing experience. Happiness and peace come from within. When you think of all the good you have done for others, happy thoughts will fill your mind and your heart.

The Powermat Wireless Charging System for iPhone LXA claims to wirelessly charge your iPhone in three, easy steps—plug in the Powermat, place the receiver case onto your iPhone, set your iPhone on the mat and let it charge away.

In theory,itˈs a good idea.No more looking around for your Apple charger, just drop your iPhone on the mat and walk away while it juices up your battery.

But to be perfectly honest, thereˈs no difference,or any more convenience,to just using a plug socket charger.

Firstly,it claims to be wireless, but you still have to find a socket to plug Powermat into. And,as it turns out,you canˈt just “drop”your iPhone on to it to charge. You have to put your device(装备)into the receiver case, which connects the Powermat with your phone so it can charge.

But I had two problems with that.Firstly, the receiver is a bit stiff and took a few seconds to pull apart and then put on my iPhone. And this would be a process you would have to go through every time you want to use the Powermat because the receiver is too big and heavy to permanently keep on your phone. And if you have a case for your iPhone, this has to be removed first as it wonˈt fit inside the receiver.

Secondly,by the time youˈve remembered where you plugged the Powermat in,seized the receiver in order to put your iPhone inside it and then placed it on the mat,it probably would have taken less time to connect your device to the Apple plug it came with. So whereˈs the convenience?

It_would_suit_someone_who_works_at_home_and_only_uses_their_iPhone_there,but_the_likelihood_of_that_is_very_slim.Powermat should also consider bringing out a battery-powered mat too,for extra convenience and to make it mobile and properly wireless.

              D. Powermat needs to be improved

When we don’t understand each other’s language, we can talk with the help of signs.

A Frenchman was once travelling in England. He could not speak English at all. One day he went into a restaurant and sat down at a table. When the waiter came, he opened his mouth, put his fingers in it, and took out again. He wanted to say . “Bring me something to eat.” The waiter soon brought him a cup of tea. The man moved his head from side to side. The waiter understood him and took the tea away. In a moment he came with a cup of coffee. But the man again refused it. He shook his head whenever the waiter brought him something to drink, for drinks are not food. When the man was going away, another man came in. This man saw the waiter , and he put his hand on his stomach. That was enough. In a few minutes there was a large plate of meat and vegetables on the table in front of him.

So you see, we cannot understand the language of signs as well as we can understand the language of words.
