We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money.   (1)   “Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen?” “When I got that great job, did Jim really feel good about it as a friend? Or did he envy my luck?” When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, itˈs too late.

Why do we make mistakes about our friends or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meanings.   (2)   Suppose someone tells you, “Youˈre a lucky dog!” Is he really on your side? If he says,” You are a lucky guy,” that is being friendly. But “a lucky dog”? Thereˈs a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesnˈt see it himself. But bringing in the “dog” bit puts you down a little.   (3)

“Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for” is another noise that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he?   (4)   Itˈs telling you to think of all the starving people in the world when you havenˈt got a date for Saturday night.

How can you tell the real meaning behind someoneˈs words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks?   (5)   His posture? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meanings of what people to you may save another mistake.

Have you ever played on a team with somebody who hated to lose? Or maybe you have a hard time if you lose anything. Some kids find it hard to lose, but everyone needs to learn how to do it.   (1)   You might not be able to do it at first, but over time it’ll get easier. And when you can handle losing, people will call you a good sportsman.

Any time two teams or kids are facing each other in a game, someone will lose.   (2)   Adults don’t like it either, but everyone can learn to control how they react to a loss. For example, when your team loses, you don’t have to be crying, even though it’s OK that you feel sad.

                (3)   Do you rush to the other team and accuse(指责)them of cheating? No! The best thing to do is to try to collect yourself and get in line with your teammates so you can congratulate them. Even if you feel like crying later or you want to complain about the game, you can do that off the field.

                (4)   For example, be polite to everyone you are playing with and against. Don’t say bad things while you’re in the middle of a game. Learn the rules of the game and don’t break them.   (5)   Try to learn from what happened. Cheer for your teammates even if the score is 1,000 to 1! You could inspire a big comeback(东山再起)!

              (1) A. It is necessary to learn to be a good sportsman.
              B. Then, what should you do after your team loses?
              C. There are many things you can do to be a good sportsman.
              D. Learning to lose without losing your cool is a skill.
              E. There they’re celebrating on the field and you break into tears.
              F. Losing is disappointing, so it’s not surprising that kids don’t like it.
              G. Show up for practics and games on time, even if you are the star of the team.
