GUANGZHOU-At least 25 people have been confirmed dead after typhoon Usagi made a landfall in South China's Guangdong Province Sunday evening, according to the provincial flood control headquaters.
"Electricity and water supply was cut off in the Huilai county, Jieyang city, and houses were collapsed as wind speeds at the center exceeded 180km per hour on Sunday afternoon," said Li Feng, a border police officer of the city, Xinhua reported Sunday.
Intercity trains between Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhuhai were suspended at 6pm and nearly 50 trains, including those along the highspeed lines to Beijing, Shenzhen and Hong Kong, will be suspended until Tuesday, according to the Guangzhou Railway (Group) Corporation.
At a Xiecheng gas station on National Road 324 near Shanwei city, where at least 13 of the 25 victims were killed, winds were strong enough to blow cars off the road and all traffic was stopped. Resident Li Huolong said he was on his way home in Shanwei, when the back window of his car was broken by the wind.
Educational authorities in 14 cities ordered schools to suspend classes on Sunday, a school day in China because of the threeday MidAutumn Festival which just ended.

Is a knife a useful instrument or a dangerous weapon? It depends on how it is used. It's the same with technology. The greatest inventions are those that affect the mass of people; and one of those greatest inventions are cell phones. They have revolutionized the human existence. This is possible only because they are getting cheaper and cheaper day by day. The technology has made it even easier to give them a longer life.
Undoubtedly, if cell phones are in right hands, no matter how far we are sitting we can talk anytime anywhere! We can watch favourite TV shows, listen to favourite songs, etc, as cell phones are equipped with all hightech features. In fact, it's good to the parents as well as children. Parents can every time monitor their children and children are also safe. If anyone is in any kind of danger she or he can call for help immediately.
There are always two sides of a coin. The advanced technology has caused a danger that we keep ignoring. The cell phones have progressed rapidly and at the same time they provide us with more tasks than what we would attempt. When a person is multitasking rather than completing a single task. This causes burden and results in stress. Also cell phones have made terrorist attacks in the world very easy. This has become a global matter of concern. Besides, children spend much of their time in playing games, listening songs, etc. Instead of going out and playing, they stick to their easy chairs and play games on their phones, which is very harmful to them!
Now mobile phones have come into our lives so much that some have started considering it as an inevitable part of their lives. They are addicted to it like a drug addict and some have gone even worse!Using cell phones while driving has contributed 10% to the road accidents.
We should always remember, that there lives a wise man between the valley of two mountains. Plain and pleasure are a result of modern technology. Are cell phones a useful instrument or a dangerous weapon? The answer lies in our hands!

Cramped(狭窄的)aeroplane journeys could be a thing of the past thanks to a new legroom(供伸腿的空间)adjustable plane seat, which can be moved backwards or forwards depending on your height.
The revolutionary seat designed by B/E Aerospace, who describe themselves as a world leading manufacturer of cabin interior products, has adjustable wheels that sit on tracks in the cabin floor.
The device enables the seats to be pushed backwards or forwards, meaning that longlegged passengers may gain a few more inches of much needed legroom if they are sitting in front of a child or shorterlegged person.
Cabin crew will control the movement of seats, most likely with a tablet or a smartphone, but passengers need to inform airlines of their height at checkin.
In plans submitted to patent the idea, designers say that the "one size fits all" attitude to airline passengers is outdated.
In their patent application, the designers said, "The one size fits all seating arrangement can cause discomfort for tall passengers, while a child or a relatively small adult may be seated in an identical seat with more than enough legroom and in relative comfort."
They added, "Even a relatively small incremental(增加的)increase in seat spacing for the tall passengers can provide additional comfort with no loss of comfort to the much smaller passengers seated in front of the tall passengers."
The invention will come as a relief to taller passengers.

You'll Never Fish Your Phone Out of the Toilet
More than 82 million phones are damaged each year after being dropped down the toilet, into swimming pools or lost at the beach. A number of waterproof(防水的)handsets have been released to solve this problem, but Comet takes it to the next level.
Not only is the Android handset IPx7 waterproof, it has been designed to float, meaning owners don't have to fish it out from the bottom of the sea, or stick their hands into a toilet basin.
Comet is designed by Californiabased Prashanth Raj Urs who has launched a campaign to fund production of the device.
Comet has a 4.7 inch screen, a 16MP camera and runs Android. It additionally has LED notification(通知)lights, similar to those on the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.
While a mood recogniser uses biometric(生物计量的)sensors to detect a person's body temperature to gauge(判断)how happy he is. The LED lights will then display different colours to suit these different moods. Comet additionally features an encryption(加密)tool called Qlock.
The campaign describes it as military grade encryption to protect your privacy when you call or text your friends who also use a Comet smartphone.
It is designed to protect calls and texts between Comet handsets to make it difficult for anyone to track or spy on users.
Early Bird prices for the phone start at﹩279 for a 32GB handset, and the first devices are expected to ship to campaign backers. A 64GB model is available for ﹩289. Both models are available in black, white and gold. Mr Urs is hoping to raise ﹩100,000 and the campaign has currently received more than﹩13,300.

The Drinkable Book
Many people around the world have no way to get clean water. However, a new invention could potentially save millions of lives around the world. Postdoctoral researcher Theresa Dankovich invented the drinkable book. Its pages are made of treated paper that can purify water that passes through them, killing over 99% of bacteria.
For several years, she developed and tested the technology, working at McGill University in Canada and at the University of Virginia. The pages of the book contain nanoparticles(纳米颗粒)of silver or copper(铜), which are responsible for killing bacteria.
"All you need to do is tear out paper, put it in a simple filter holder and pour water into it from rivers, streams, wells, etc. and out comes clean water-and dead bacteria as well," explained Dr. Dankovich.
According to tests conducted in the lab, each page is able to clean up to 100 liters of water. Therefore, a single book can filter one person's water supply for about four years, which makes the drinkable book highly useful and relevant(有重大意义的), given that 663 million people around the world don't have access to clean drinkable water. Trials were also conducted at 25 sources of polluted water in South Africa, Ghana, and Bangladesh, proving that the paper could successfully eliminate(除去)99% of all waterborne germs.
Now that the drinkable book is a success, Dr. Dankovich and her team are stepping up efforts to produce more copies. They currently make the books by hand, but they hope to get into mass production pretty soon. "We need to get them into people's hands to see more of what the effects are going to be. There is only so much you can do when you're a scientist on your own," she said.

Rats eat our food or make it so dirty that it isn't fit for people at all. That's why people often kill them by laying down poison. After a day or two, they find the poison still there. The rats haven't touched it even though it is near the food they eat. People think that they must be clever and cunning. Some scientists have been trying to find the best way to see just what a rat does day and night. They have found out that rats aren't so clever. They are just very shy!
Rats usually live in holes. They run from these holes to the places where they eat and drink. They have special paths on which they travel each time. So they know their paths quite well.
If anything new, such as a stone or wood, is put in the path, the rats won't go near it at first as they are too frightened. It will take them many days to get over the fear. They are also frightened to go near a place that they know, where something has been taken away. If a path goes around the rock, the rats follow the same path around the rock each time. If the rock is taken away, they will still run round the place where the rock was! They won't cross the empty place, which is now open to them, even though it would be quicker.
Rats will always keep away from anything unusual to them. That's why they won't eat poison on the first or second night. They usually won't go anywhere near it for about four days until they get used to being there. Even then they only eat a little at a time. If people want to kill rats with poison, all they have to do is to leave it out for a few days. Once the rats have got used to it, they will eat it and die.

A new study warns that about thirty percent of the world's people may not have enough water by 2025.
A private American organization called Population Action International (PAI)did the new study. It says more than three hundred and thirtyfive million people lack enough water now. The people live in twentyeight countries. Most of the countries are in Africa or the Middle East.
PAI researcher Robert Engelman says by the year 2025, about three thousand million people are short of water. At least eighteen more countries are expected to have serious water problems. The demand for water keeps increasing. Yet the amount of water on the earth stays the same.
Mr. Engelman says the population in countries that lack water is growing faster than in other parts of the world. He says population growth in these countries will continue to increase.
The report says that lack of water in the future may result in several problems. It may increase health problems. Lack of water often means drinking water is not safe. Mr. Engelman says there are problems all over the world because of diseases like cholera that are carried in water.
Lack of water may also lead to more international conflict. Countries may have to fight for water in the future. Some countries now get sixty percent of their fresh water from other countries. This is true of Egypt, the Netherlands, Cambodia, Syria, Sudan and Iraq. And the report says lack of water would affect the ability to improve their economies. This is because new industries often need large amounts of water when they are beginning.
The Population Action International study gives several solutions to the water problem. One way, it says, is to find ways to use water for more than one purpose. Another way is to teach people to be careful not to waste water. A third way is to use less water for agriculture.
The report also says longterm solutions to the water problem must include controls on population growth.

What can you do when you are unhappy? If you want to let out your anger or pressure by breaking things, you just do. Now a school in Nanjing has built a "stress wall" to help students who feel unhappy due to heavy schoolwork or for other reasons.
The leader of the school said the idea of a stress wall started when footprints were found on some newly painted walls and some school windows were broken.
"These things happen because some students feel lots of pressure from their studies or because they don't get along well with other students. When under stress, the body gets ready to either run or fight and becomes very nervous. Hitting the wall can help relax the body and take away stress," he said.
"Tests and homework make me sad," said a junior girl, "I can't wait to hit the wall. It will help me a lot with my problems." However, another girl student who wouldn't give her name said, "The wall won't help because it can't talk," and she added, "I need to talk to someone when I'm sad."

When we get some money as a gift, how to deal with the money becomes a problem we must face. From my perspective, the answers are diverse in different periods. However, no matter how you deal with the money, the most important thing is to use it wisely.
In my childhood, when the cartoons about the car race extremely attracted me, I would use the money I received to buy toy cars. But when I entered the school, toys could not attract me. In this period, the things I wanted most were some electronic products. I always hurried to buy the uptodate mobile phone immediately I received money as a gift.
Now I have got a job, the things above me are not important for me. I do not need some useless things or something I have already had. Probably, saving money in the bank is my best choice.
In conclusion, if I receive a sum of money, in different periods I may have different choices. Whatever I choose to do with the gift of money, it must make me feel happy.

Don't worry if you have problems! If you're breathing, you have difficulties. It's the way of life. And believe it or not, most of your problems may actually be good for you!
The lagoon(环礁湖)side of the Great Barrier Reef looks pale and lifeless, while the ocean side is lively and colorful. The reason is that the coral(珊瑚)around the lagoon side is in still water, with no challenge for its survival. It dies early. The coral on the ocean side is constantly being tested by wind, waves and storms. It has to fight for survival every day of its life. As it is challenged and tested it changes and adapts. It grows healthy. It grows strong. And it reproduces.
That's how it is with people. Challenged and tested, we come alive! Like coral struck by the waves, we grow. Physical demands can cause us to grow stronger. Mental and emotional stress can produce strength and patience. Spiritual testing can produce strength of character and faithfulness.
So, you have problems-no problem! Just tell yourself, "There I grow again!"
