You have probably heard it before, most likely from your English teacher. If you want to become a good
writer, read good writing. Unfortunately, you may not have understood what did good to you and even what
you were supposed to get from that experience.
As you start reading a book, poem, or story, do so with no thought at all and the experience will improve
your writing. Just read for pleasure to begin with, or to learn. As you progress through the work, think about
whether or not it is "easy" reading. Do you become so interested in the subject and flow of the writing that
you completely forget the person who wrote it, or does the composition sometimes call too much attention to
itself through words and phrases that seem out of place or unexpected? These latter situations are a chance to
learn from the writer's mistakes. In fact, the reader should not have to worry about how an author does "his
thing"... he should be able to just enjoy and learn. Every time a word strikes you as poorly chosen, stop to
consider why it has this effect. Also, do not spend a lot of time analyzing (分析) the passage but put more
efforts in enjoying it from the whole.
Another thing I do, particularly with nonfiction (非小说) books, is to select a part to read as if it is a
completely separate work. Once again, read as a common consumer (消费者) rather than a critic (批评家).
For learning how words and phrases work together on the most basic (基本的) level, however, nothing is
more suitable than your devotion to reading poems. A poet is often trying to put a book's worth of meaning
and feelings into lines, and every side of the work shows a very close attention to craft (工艺).
As you can see, there is no one simple way of reading to improve your writing. The key is not to make
it boring. Select authors you admire or like most, and enjoy their works as anyone else would. As long as you
are reading, you are improving yourself as a writer.

Why do men die earlier than women? The latest research makes it known that the reason could be that
men's hearts go into rapid decline when they reach middle age.
The largest study of the effects of ageing on the heart has found that women's longevity may be linked
to the fact that their hearts do not lose their pumping power with age.
"We have found that the power of the male heart falls by 20-25 percent between 18 and 70 years of age,"
said the head of the study, David Goldspink of Liverpool John Moores University in the UK.
"Within the heart there are millions of cells that enable it to beat. Between the age of 20 and 70, one-third
of those cells die and are not replaced in men," said Goldspink. "This is part of the ageing process."
What surprises scientists is that the female heart sees very little loss of these cells. A healthy 70-year-old
woman's heart could perform almost as well as a 20-year-old one's.
"This gender difference might just explain why women live longer than men," said Goldspink. They
studied more than 250 healthy men and women between the ages of 18 and 80, focusing on healthy persons
to remove the confusing influence of disease."The team has yet to find why ageing takes a greater loss on the
              male heart," said Goldspink.
The good news is that men can improve the health of their heart with regular exercise. Goldspink stressed
that women also need regular exercise to prevent their leg muscles becoming smaller and weaker as they age.

Earthquakes are something that people fear. There are some places that have few or no earthquakes.
Most places in the world, however, have them regularly (有规律的). Countries that have a lot of earthquakes
              are usually quite mountainous (多山的).
The most talked about earthquake in the United States was in San Francisco in 1906. Over 700 people
died in it. The strongest one in North America was in 1964. It happened in Alaska.
Strong earthquakes are not always the ones that kill the most people. In 1755, one of the strongest
earthquakes ever recorded was felt in Portugal. Around 2,000 people died.
In 1923, a very strong earthquake hit the Tokyo, Yokohama area of Japan. A hundred and forty thousand
people died. Most of them died in fires which followed the earthquake.
One of the worst earthquakes ever was in China in 1976. It killed a large number of people. The worst
earthquake ever reported was also in China, in which 400,000 people were killed or injured. This earthquake
              happened in 1556.

People realize that, although animals may not have the same intelligence as human beings, they are clever
              enough to learn certain things.
Dogs are extremely useful as companions for blind people. When a dog has been properly trained, he will
always lead his blind master (主人) in the right direction and keep him out of danger. For example, seeing-eye
dogs learn never to cross a busy road when cars are coming, even if their master ordered them to do so.
Horses are also able to learn many things. Horses that are used for guard or police duty must learn never
to be frightened of noises and traffic. Racing horses are able to run much faster than other horses, but they
are also quite high strung (紧张). Therefore, it is necessary for those people who train them to be very patient
              (耐心) and understanding.
The movie and television can use trained animals too. Some animals, such as monkeys and foxes, are easy
to film. All you have to do is make a trail in front of the camera by putting something that smells good to the
animals over the ground. Big animals, such as lions and tigers, can be photographed as they come happily back
to their families or dinner. If a movie actor is nearby, the well-trained animal will pay no attention to him.
However, the audience may imagine that the actor escaped a terrible death.
              1. Seeing-eye dogs have to learn the following except _____.
              [     ]

              A. following the master's order anytime
              B. leading their master in the right direction
              C. keeping their master safe while leading the way
              D. crossing a busy road at the proper time
              2. What does "make a trail" mean here in the last paragraph?
              [     ]

              A. place something to attract the animal
              B. give the animal a certain task
              C. order the animal to do things
              D. follow the animal to hunt
              3. Lions can be photographed easily when _____.
              [     ]

              A. they are following a trail of something that smells good
              B. they are returning to their families
              C. they have been trained to work with other animals
              D. they do not know a movie-actor is nearby
              4. Which of the following statements is the main idea of the passage?
              [     ]

              A. Dangerous wild animals can be trained.
              B. Dogs can be trained to help blind people.
              C. Animals can be trained to learn certain things.
              D. Animals can become interested in learning.

There are some very good things about open education. This way of teaching allows the students to
develop their own interests in many subjects. Open education allows students to be responsible for their
own education. Some students do badly in traditional classrooms. The open classroom may allow them
to enjoy learning. Some students will be happier in an open education school. They will not have to worry
              about grades or rules.
But many students will not do well in an open classroom. For some students, there are too few rules.
These students will do little in school. They will not make good use of open education. Because open
education is so different from traditional education, these students may have a problem of getting used to
making so many choices. For many students it is important to have some rules in the classroom. They
worry about the rules even when there are no rules. Even a few rules will help this kind of students. The
last point about open education is that some traditional teachers do not like it. Many teachers do not believe
in open education. Teachers who want to have an open classroom may have many problems at their school.
You now know what open education is. Some of its good points and bad points have been explained.
You may have your own opinion about open education. The writer thinks that open education is a good idea,
but only in theory. In actual fact, it may not work very well in a real class or school. The writer believes that
most students, but of course not all students, want some structure in their classes. They want and need to
have some rules. In some cases, they must be made to study some subjects. Many students are pleased to
find subjects they have to study interesting. They would not study those subjects if they did not have to.

Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not
necessary so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here's how.
                    1) Plan your time carefully. When you plan your week, you should make a list of things that you have
to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First your time for eating, sleeping,
dressing, etc. then decide a good, regular time for studying. Don't forget to set aside enough time for
entertainment. A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is
              happening to your time.
                    2) Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which
may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios,
or television! When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
                    3) Make good use of your time in class. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teachers
say. Really listening in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher
              says.
                    4) Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes. Review (回顾) the important
points that your teacher taught in class. If you know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day,
read that material and it will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.
                    5) Develop a good attitude about tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about
a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won't end if you don't pass a test, so
              don't be overly worried.

It takes many years for you to grow up. There are two periods in your life when you grow rapidly. The
first period begins right after you are born and lasts until you are about six months old. The second period
starts when you reach the age of 13. First, girls grow faster than boys, then boys catch up and grow faster
            and stronger.
Your head stops growing earlier than the rest of you. By the time you are ten, your head is nearly full size.
The bones of your arms and legs are short when you are a baby. When you reach the age of nine, your bones
starts to grow rapidly, and will keep growing until you reach your full height (高度).
Besides growing taller, your body changes in other ways. When a boy is about 13 years old, his voice begins
to get deeper and he may begin to grow a beard (胡子). At about the age of 13, a girl's body begins to function (运行) like a woman's. Some important changes are taking place, changes that makes it possible for boys and

When people want to know about the weather, they usually go to their radios, TVs, newspapers, or to the
Internet. However, you can also find many weather signs (征兆) among wildlife. A drop (下降) in air pressure
affects small animals in many ways. Mice and deer are good weather indicators. Before a storm, people outside
have observed that field mice come out of their holes and that Deer come down from the mountains.
Birds are good weather indicators. For example, some birds become irritable (急躁的) and will fight over a
piece of bread. Other birds chirp (叽叽喳喳) and sing just before a storm. It seems they know they won't have
another chance for one or two hours. Birds also look for safe places before a storm. You will sometimes see
birds gathering together on a wire (电线) close to a building. Before the storm, the low pressure makes the air
so thin that birds have difficulty flying.
It is unusual to see many birds flying overhead in the summertime. Watch for other weather signs if you
see this. If they fly in the wrong direction, they may be flying ahead of a storm.
By paying closer attention to some important signs in nature, we can become better prepared for any kind
            of weather.
            1. The word "indicators" in Paragraph 1 probably means ______.

            C. come down from a wire
            D. share food
            3. How can birds feel the coming of a storm?
            [     ]

            A. By feeling the change of temperature.
            B. By noticing the change of time.
            C. By feeling the change of air pressure.

Is learning a foreign language ever easy? Yes. If you are five and move to another country, you will
quickly pick up the language. But what about for the rest of us who are no longer five, and need to be
polite when traveling for business or for pleasure? I think that answer is also yes. Language learning can
be easy if you don't want or need to learn too much.
The key to successful language learning in my mind is not to set the goal too high. It is rather like
running. Even if you run twice a week, you don't necessarily want to be able to run a marathon. You
might just want to maintain a level of fitness. I think the same can be true for language learning.
Let's get back to the goal. If you decide to learn ten words in a foreign language before visiting the
country, you know that you will manage to do this. However, if you decide to attain conversational
fluency, unless you are an exceptionally talented individual, you will probably fail and give up in disgust.
It is also far easier to start learning a foreign language than to finish. In other words, the better you
are, the slower it can be to improve, because you will get stuck with grammar, making sentences,
learning less common words, etc. If you are only trying to learn a few foreign words and phrases, you
will enjoy faster progress, have more fun, and won't have to spend too much time.
The idea of learning only a few hundred words in a language, and then stopping, isn't the usual
approach to language learning, but it can be a very rewarding and entertaining activity.
            1. In the writer's opinion, it is easy for adults to learn English if _____.
            [     ]

            A. they are especially talented individuals
            B. they don't want or need to learn too much
            C. they have to spend a lot of time on it
            D. they have a chance to go abroad
            2. The writer intends to express that learning only a few hundred words in a language, and then
                stopping, _____.
            [     ]

            A. is the usual method of learning a language
            B. is of no use for learning a language
            C. may cause a lot of mistakes while traveling
            D. can be rewarding and entertaining
            3. The writer believes that if you want to be good at a foreign language, you will probably _____.
            [     ]

            A. forget your own goals
            B. become a gifted language learner
            C. get tired of learning it
            D. reach your learning goal in advance
            4. The best title of this passage would be _____.
