            • 1. one day,I noticed the most beautiful Cadillac pull in the lot while waiting for my husband.A pretty female driver pulled into the spot beside our car.There was a striking resemblance to Liz Taylor.Her eyes were as blue as the sea,and teeth like an even row of pearls.A few minutes 1ater,a nice looking man entered her car,leaned over and kissed her and she drove away.
Sitting there,I wanted to cry. How could some people have it all?
Then it became almost routine to see her about once a week.She seemed friendly and always waved,flashing a big smile.My envy continued to exist long after she drove away.
A couple of weeks later,sitting in our usual parking lot,I was holding a book,watching her over the top of it.Her husband came to the car,took her arm and helped her out of the car.I could see very well as she moved to get out.She unsteadily walked around to the passenger side very slowly,leaning on a walking cane.Sitting sideways.she lifted one leg with her hands and then the other.The beautiful lady had a prosthesis(假肢) on the left Ieg and a brace(支持物) on the right leg.
I couldn’t watch them drive away as the tears were blinding me.Through my tears,I told my husband about the beautiful lady.He said he knew her husband and the story.The lady and her parents were in a car that got caught on the railroad tracks and was hit by a train.Both parents were killed and she was severely injured.She was only 12years old.The railroad made a large  settlement  with her because the crossing had no signals.He explained her car was specially built for her needs as well as the home.
I prayed for forgiveness all the way home.The lady I thought had everything I didn’t.I realized how lucky I was to have my parents,the ability to walk,run or dance through life and many wonderful things money can’t buy.I would not have traded places with the beautiful lady for anything.
When you meet a person who seems to be much better off than you, don’t be fooled.

            • 2. When John was growing up,other kids felt sorry for him.His parents always had him weeding the garden,carrying out the garbage and delivering newspapers.But when John reached adulthood,he was better off than his childhood playmates.He had more job satisfaction,a better marriage and was healthier.Most of all,he was happier.Far happier.
These are the findings of a 40-year study that followed the lives of 456teenage boys from Boston.The study showed that those who had worked as boys enjoyed happier and more productive lives than those who had not.“Boys who worked in the home or community gained competence (能力) and came to feel they were worthwhile members of society,”said George Vaillant,the psychologist (心理学家) who made the discovery.“And because they felt good about themselves,others felt good about them.”
Vaillant’s study followed these males in great detail.Interviews were repeated at ages 25,31and 47.Under Vaillant,the researchers compared the men’s mental-health scores with their boyhood-activity scores with their boyhood-activity scores.Points were awarded for part-time jobs,housework,effort in school,and ability to deal with problems.
The link between what the men had done as boys and how they turned out as adults was surprisingly sharp.Those who had done the most boyhood activities were twice as likely to have warm relations with a wide variety of people,five times as likely to be well paid and 16times less likely to have been unemployed.The researchers also found that IQ and family social and economic class made no real difference in how the boys turned out.Working----at any age----is important.Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility,independence,confidence and competence---the underpinnings (基础) of emotional health.They also help him understand that people must cooperate and work toward common goals.The most competent adults are those who know how to do this.Yet work isn’t everything.As Tolstoy once said,“One can live magnificently in this world if one knows how to work and how to love,to work for the person one loves and to love one’s work.”

46.What do we know about John?
A.He enjoyed his career and marriage.
              B.He had few childhood playmates.
C.He received little love from his family.

47.Vaillant’s words in Paragraph 2 serve as
A.a description of personal values and social values

C.an example for parents’expectations of their children

              D.sudden and rapid
50.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

“And the word went around,'Who was out there managing that fire?Oh,that's Walcott! That's Walcott up there!'So,you know, moments like that,it's heaven on Earth for a dad.“
Dekalb Walcott Jr.retired in 2009.The younger Dekalb says he's proud of being a second-generation firefighter.“You know,it makes me look forward to fatherhood as well,because I'm definitely looking forward to passing that torch down to my son.“

            • 4. My wife and I have always been friendly with the clerks at the local convenience store.I don’t think many people appreciate what a difficult job these folks have.They work for a little over minimum wage and I often wonder how they make ends meet.
One of the clerks,Charlie,was always wearing his glasses but he didn’t one day.I asked him about it and he said they’d been out of order and that he couldn’t afford a new pair.His family needed money.It was obvious that he was having a difficult time.
We wanted to help him,so we turned to our own eye doctor for assistance with a plan.We had his secretary contact him,asking him to come in for an eye exam for free.We told the doctor to let him order whatever glasses he wanted and that we would pay for them.Although Charlie questioned what was going on,the doctor just told him that someone had offered the money for his new glasses.When we went in to pay the bill,the doctor told us he was so touched by our idea that he waived the exam fee and only charged us for half the price of the glasses!
It was so wonderful to see Charlie in her new glasses and he enjoyed telling all the regular customers how the gift came about.I’m sure that upon hearing her story,ideas of kindness may have emerged in the minds of many.

            • 5. You are going along in a conversation with a friend and it all seems to be good,and suddenly,you say something and the conversation stops entirely.And you’re thinking“What happened?”You didn’t say anything insulting(侮辱的)or mean,you just voiced your opinion.Or so you think…
I had lunch the other day with a dear friend.I travel a lot for work,and she used to.I was complaining about the air travel.I said how I would love some day to get into the first class cabin where sutely conditions were far better than the economy(经济舱).My friend said“You know what I used to do?I'd buy my coach ticket,but then,at the last minute,right before boarding started,I’d go up to the counter agent and ask if there were any first class seats still available.And often,they’d say‘yes!’and I'd only pay an extra 200insteadof 2000and get to fly first.”I immediately retorted with“Oh,that would never happen now.They jam the planes so full,there’s never an available seat to be had.“And with that,the conversation ended-at least that part of it.
It was only later that it hit me I had unwisely said no to my friend’s experience of life.I had slammed(砰地关,使劲摔)my reality in her face,as if hers didn’t matter.
There are few things worse that we do to our friends than make them feel like they don’t matter.We rarely mean to,yet we do it all the time.It would have been so easy for me to consider her experience in my response:“I never thought of that.I wonder if it would still work,given the general overcrowding.”I would not have thus denied either her experience or mine.And there would have been a continuing basis for conversation,had we wished to do so.
Simply put, instead of listening competitively,we need to listen to learn.

              D.I voiced my opinion

            • 6. My daughter and I collected the empty cans and bottles in our home.this morning,We had 6 full garbage bags later so I knew we would be spending a bit more of time at the recycling center. When we got there,a man and his kids were also doing the morning recycling and were using two of the four machines to recycle their plastic and cans.Luckily,we were able to use the 2 remaining machines.
Of course, there were others that came, but when they saw the two, families with garbage bags full of recycled things, they quickly left. However, one woman came in with just 5 cans and looked as if she was in a hurry. So I stopped what I was doing and let her in to recycle her cans.Of course, she was grateful, and it felt good to let her go ahead of me.But that was not the whole story.
My daughter and I continued to work through the bags, but the plastic recycling machine stopped working because it was full.My daughter was left with nothing to,do.The other family was still  using the other two plastic recycling machines, but it.seemed that they were almost done.I just told my daughter we would have to wait until they were done. But the man of the other family came through with another act of kindness. He offered to let us go ahead of him.I was really surprised, because we had more than 5 bottles, but he didn’t seem to mind.I happily accepted it.
It was great to give and then to get an act of kindness in turn.It was small,I didn't expect it,but it surely brightened up my day.

            • 7. I once met a well-known botanist at a dinner party.I had never talked with a botanist before, and I found him fascinating.I sat there absorbed and listened while he spoke of unusual plants and his experiments (he even told me astonishing facts about the simple potato).I had a small indoor garden of my own---and he was good enough to tell me how to solve some of my problems.
As I said,we were at a dinner party. There must have been a dozen other guests, but I broke an important rule of politeness.I ignored everyone else and talked for hours to the botanist.
Midnight came,I said good night to everyone and departed. The botanist then turned to our host and said many nice things about me,including that I was a“most interesting conversationalist.”
An interesting conversationalist?I had said hardly anything at all.I couldn’t have said anything if I had wanted to without changing the subject, for I didn’t know any more about plants than I knew about sharks. But I had done this one thing:I had listened carefully.I listened because I was really interested. And he felt it.Naturally that pleased him. That kind of listening is one of the the best ways to show respect to others, and it makes them feel great too.“Few human beings,”wrote Jack Woodford in Strangers in Love,“can resist the sweet effect of rapt attention.”I went even further than that.I was“sincere in my admiration and generous in my praise.”
I told him that I had been hugely entertained and instructed.I had.I told him I wished I had his knowledge.I told him that I should love to wander the fields with him. What’s more,it was all true.
And so I had him thinking of me as a good conversationalist when,in reality,I had been merely a good listener and had encouraged him to talk.

            • 8. It was time to break free.
I needed to run away and the Bloomsburg Fair was the best place to go.
I don’t know if you can call it running away wince it was only and hour away from my home.But once I entered the fair grounds,I crossed over into another world.The loudspeaker offered background music over the sounds of people of people talking,bargaining and food sellers yelling for your attention.
I belonged here.I didn’t know if I had it in my blood or not,but I always wanted to have a small food stand and travel in my off season from fair to fair selling goodies.Perhaps one day.It certainly wasn’t a priority(优先考虑的事)in my life,Perhaps it should be.
After I was there awhile,I needed to get away to a quiet spot.Most of the time,I could find that anywhere the farm animals were kept. They needed the quiet. So I went there to find peace  with the cows,goats,horses,pigs and yes,the turkeys.You'd think being this close to“Thanksgiving“,they'd be a little scared,but they were not.
It was in the dairy barn(仓库) where I found peace this time.I so admired the young folks who tended to farm animals.I thought they had a greater appreciation for life.They participated in it firsthand.I once watched a young fanner help bring a baby cow into the world.
My favorite scene was to come across a young cowboy lying in the hay asleep among the cows that had settled down for a rest.There,with his heads in a small soft spot alongside his favorite cow,I had seen him in a much deserved sleep.Perhaps better at rest there than in his own bed.
I had the pleasure of speaking with a young teenage farm girl that day.
“You look so comfortable,“I said to her.
“Oh I am,“she said.“Life makes it comfortable for me.“
“You mean being a farm girl?“
“No,Life! That's the name of my cow,“she said, smiling as she gently patted the cow's side.
“I thought they called cows Betsy and Elsie. Why did you call her Life?“
“I discovered life again here. It was the only meaningful name that came to mind. I had been raised in the big city and really hated it. Then we moved to the country,running away from Lt all. I think my parents called it a mid-life crisis,“she said,laughing.
“Oh,I can understand that. I've been in one since birth,“I said.
“It was on the farm that I learned to love life again. I was there when Life was born. It was so  exciting. My whole outlook on the world changed. So I named her Life. Now,I can say I really love'Life',“she said.
“How amazing!I write stories and J am always trying to get people to enjoy life,to wake up each day expecting the best from it. But they all too often go to bed with so much bad stuff in their soul,and on their mind,that they wake up feeling bad and expect it to only get worse from there. All too often it does,just because that's all they choose to see in that otherwise perfectly beautiful day,“I told her.
“That's too bad. They need to see a cow born,a chicken hatch. I guess they need to wake up early and hug Life!“she said,laughing.
“When was the last time you hugged Life?“she asked me.
“I am sorry to say even I have had trouble doing that lately,“I said.
              “Come here!“she said.
Then standing up and stepping aside, she said,“Go ahead…hug Life!“
I paused for a moment and dropping all thoughts of looking silly,I did. I hugged a cow.

“So…Your leg?I mean, how did your leg heal (恢复健全)?”
“To tell you the truth-my legs have been well all my life,”she sighed.
              “But I don’t understand!”I said,“Your dancing career (事业)…You pretended all these years?”
”Very much so,and for a very good reason.”
She thought for a while and then continued.“We were talking about engagement (订婚) when your grandfather had to go to war.I was so afraid of losing him that the only way I could stay normal was to dance.I put all my energy and time into practicing and I became very good.Critics praised me,the public loved me,but all I could feel was the ache in my heart,not knowing whether the love of my life would ever return.Then one day a letter came.There were only three sentences:‘I have lost my leg.I am no longer a whole man and now give you back your freedom.It is best you forget about me.”
“I made my decision there and then.I traveled away from the city.When I returned I had bought myself a stick.I told everyone I had been in a car crash and that my leg would never completely heal again.My dancing days were over.No one doubted the story-I had learned to limp (一瘸一拐地走) convincingly before I returned home.And I made sure the first person to hear of my accident was a reporter I knew well.Then I traveled to the hospital.They had pushed your grandfather outside in his wheelchair.I took a deep breath,leaned on my stick and limped to him.”
“I showed him newspaper articles of my accident.‘There is a whole life waiting for us out there!But I am not going to carry you.You are going to walk yourself.’”
“I limped a few steps toward him and showed him what I’d taken out of my pocket.‘Now show me you are still a man.’I said.He bent to take his stick from the ground and struggled out of that wheelchair.He managed it on his own and walked to me and never sat in a wheelchair again in his life.”

Five years ago,when I taught art at a school in Seattle,I used Tinkertoys as a test at the beginning of a term to find out something about my students.I put a small set of Tinkertoys in front of each student,and said:”Make something out of the Tinkertoys.You have 45minutes today-and 45minutes each day for the rest of the week.”
A few students hesitated to start.They waited to see the rest of the class would do.Several others checked the instructions and made something according to one of the model plans provided.Another group built something out of their own imaginations.
Once I had a boy who worked experimentally with Tinkertoys in his free time.His constructions filled a shelf in the art classroom and a good part of his bedroom at home.I was delighted at the presence of such a student.Here was an exceptionally creative mind at work.His presence meant that I had an unexpected teaching assistant in class whose creativity would infect(感染) other students.
Encouraging this kind of thinking has a downside.I ran the risk of losing those students who had a different style of thinking.Without fail one would declare,”But I’m just not creative.”
“Do you dream at night when you’re asleep?”
              “Oh,sure.”
“So tell me one of your most interesting dreams.”The student would tell something wildly imaginative.Flying in the sky or in a time machine or growing three heads.“That’s pretty creative.Who does that for you?”
              “Nobody.I do it.”
              “Really-at night,when you’re asleep?”
