I was once unemployed. But I never let it affect our family. I kept the family together.

I pulled the car into the garage and got out, just like every night for the past 16 years. The difference was that I wouldn’t have a job to go to in the morning. I used to be a lead in technology for a national bank until it was closed. I’d put my heart and soul into my job. Not only did I work long hours, I was on call 24 hours a day, weekends and holidays too. If someone had a tech problem, even at 2:00 am Christmas morning, I was on it. My kids joked that even though they were the teenagers, I was the one who was absorbed in my cellphone and had to be told not to text at the dinner table.

My wife, Michelle, had been able to go to back to work full time as an office manager once we heard my job was threatened. But our three kids would be going to college—our son, TJ, was a high school senior, and the girls, Sarah and Tara, were in ninth grade—and I wanted to five them the education and opportunities they deserved.

I stepped out into our yard. The lawn(草坪) and flower beds that my mum had tended so carefully were overrun with weeds. There was a Chinese tree in the middle of the yard that I remembered my parents planting when I was a boy. It needed caring. But I’d put on a lot of weight—no time to exercise with my crazy hours. I went up to the house. Michelle greeted me at the door with a hug. “It’s going to be okay,” she said. “Maybe you should think of this time a break. You deserve one.”

“I’m sorry, Dad,” TJ said. “I know how much your job meant to you.” His concern was mirrored in the girl’s faces.

“I’ll take care of this,” I told them. “I’m going to work round the clock to find a new job and get our lives back to normal.”

A funny thing happened to Arthur when he was on the way to work one day. As he walked along Park Avenue near the First National Bank, he heard the sound of someone trying to start a car. He tried again and again but couldn’t get the car moving. Arthur stopped and asked, “It looks like you’ve got a problem, ” Arthur said.

“ I’m afraid so. I’m in a big hurry and I can’t start my car.”

“Is there something I can do to help?” Arthur asked. The young man looked at the two suitcases in the back seat and then said, “Thanks. If you’re sure it wouldn’t be too much trouble, you could help me these suitcases into a taxi.”

“ No trouble at all. I’d be glad to help.”

The young man got out and took one of the suitcases from the back seat. After placing it on the ground, he turned to get the other one. Just as Arthur picked up the first suitcase and started walking, he heard the long loud noise of an alarm.

It was from the bank. There had been a robbery(抢劫)

Park Avenue had been quiet a moment before. Now the air was filled with the sound of the alarm and the shouts of people running from all directions. Cars stopped and a passengers joined the crowd in front of the bank. People asked each other, “What happened?” But everyone had a different answer.

Arthur, still carrying the suitcase, turned to look at the bank and walked right into the young woman in front of him.

She looked at the suitcase and then at him. Arthur was surprised. “ Why is she looking at me like that?” He thought. “ The suitcase! She thinks I’m the bank thief!”

Arthur looked around at the crowd of people. He became frightened, and without another thought, he started to run.

Chinese adults read news and threads on smartphone app WeChat for more than 40 minutes a day on average, according to the latest annual survey of China’s reading habits released on April 20. The results show that on average, Chinese adults use WeChat to read twice a day for a total length of more than 40 minutes. The survey showed that 66.4 percent of adults in China used WeChat to read, of which 72.9 percent read news, 67.1 percent read their friends’updates and 20.9 percent read threads on public accounts.
Professor Wang Yuguang of the Department of Information Management in Peking University said the dream of having libraries all over the world is still not realized, and the presence of WeChat is filling this void to some extent. But personally, he thinks WeChat is taking too much of our time. Students are too reliant on WeChat.
“Reading on WeChat is fragmented (片段的), not to mention the inaccuracy of some of the information,” said Dean of Chinese Academy of Press and Publication Wei Yushan. Experts believe that children’s stories, academic reports and classic literature should still be read on paper.

An increasing number of students fall in love at an early age and create problems with their studies, which has aroused the school’s attention. A middle school has set a "distance for civilized communication" between boy and girl students. Boys and girls should keep a distance of at least 50 centimeters when they talk in public, otherwise they will be criticized or get an even severer punishment, says an article in Beijing News.

It seems that the school has passed the school regulation to prevent girls and boys from falling in love at an early age and creating problems for the school authorities. Some teachers and parents approve of the regulation because it is of vital importance to the teenagers’study. However, many experts say the problem, if it is one, can be better solved through communication.

It is natural for a teenager to have a feeling of love on someone from the opposite sex. It is natural for girls and boys to be attracted to each other as they mature sexually.

In fact, normal communication between boy and girl students is good not only for their emotional development and personality refinement, but also for their relationship when they grow up.

Yesterday Matt was sick. I picked up Archie from the sitter and Eloise from school and decided to run to a supermarket for a few things. I had hoped to be in and out quickly.

I found a line with just one person ahead of me and began organizing my items on the conveyor. After placing my items, I look up to see that the person ahead of me was an elderly woman. She was paying for her items with change and wanted to purchase each separately. I was frustrated with this woman and the inconvenience she had placed on me.

But then I watched the young employee with this woman. I watched him help her count her change, ever so softly taking it from her shaking hands. When she asked if she had enough to buy a reusable bay, he told her she did and went two lines over to get one for her and then repackaged her items. Never once was this employee angry. He was nothing but patient and kind.

As I was watching him, I saw that Eloise was too. She was standing next to the woman, watching the employee count the change. I realized I hadn’t been inconvenienced at all. That my daughter was instead witnessing kindness and patience and being taught this valuable lesson by a complete stranger.

When the woman was finished, the employee began ringing up my items and thanked me for my patience. I then thanked him for teaching us patience and kindness by his treatment of that elderly woman. When he was finished I pushed my cart through the store trying to find the manager. I wanted her to know of the employee’s kindness and patience and how much it meant to me. After tracking her down and sharing the story with her, we left a supermarket with a cart full of consumable items, but what is more, a heart full of appreciation for such an invaluable lesson.

What can you do when you are unhappy? If you want to let out your anger or pressure by breaking things, you just do. Now a school in Nanjing has built a “stress wall” to help students who feel unhappy due to heavy schoolwork or for other reasons.

The leader of the school said the idea of a stress wall started when footprints were found on some newly painted walls and some school windows were broken.

“These things happen because some students feel lots of pressure from their studies or because they don’t get along well with other students. When under stress, the body gets ready to either run or fight and becomes very nervous. Hitting the wall can help relax the body and take away stress,” he said.

“Tests and homework make me sad,” said a junior girl, “I can’t wait to hit the wall. It will help me a lot with my problems.” However, another girl student who wouldn’t give her name said,” The wall won’t help because it can’t talk,” and she added,” I need to talk to someone when I’m sad.”

              阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I always prided myself on being a wise shopper and having a good nose for bargains. So when I came across a sporting goods store with a sign "Going Out of Business Sale", I marched into the crowded store. Up and down the aisles (通道), I wandered, humming to myself and enjoying the energy and excitement of a sale.

All of a sudden, there, at the back of the store sat a canoe(轻舟) exactly like my husband's dream Supremo Numero-Uno, whose picture had been stuck on the bathroom mirror for years. My heart beat wildly. I pushed my way through the crowds, and nearly fell into the canoe looking for the price tag. There it was, with the manufacturer's suggested price at $6,750 plus tax crossed out and a handwritten TO CLEAR $750 AS IS. Must be a mistake. $6000 off?. Salesman. I had to talk to a salesman. I spotted a young fellow with a "Hi. I'm Mathew". "Mathew. Tell me about this El Supremo canoe.

What's wrong with it? Why is it only $750?"

"Oh. There's nothing wrong with it. It's brand new. We're closing the store. It's on clearance like everything else. I'll go check." A few minutes later he came back and said, "I'm sorry ma'am. Someone made a mistake on the sale tag. It should be $4,750 for the whole package."

I felt tears well up in my eyes. "Oh well", I said sadly. "Of course, it was too good to be true. This is exactly like my husband's dreamboat. I guess I started to dream myself when I saw that price tag. He's going to be 62 years old Friday. Had to retire early for his health. It's been hard on just the pension but the stubborn old fool has been saving $10 every week for years to buy one just like this. I promise I won't buy anything, but it's just an old man's silly dream, you know. Always said he wanted to fish in a canoe after he retired," my voice lowered and I turned and walked away.

              Paragraph 1:

I was already at the mall door when Mathew caught up with me. "Do you have $750 plus $25 for delivery, ma 'am?"_____________

My heavenly dream brings a lifetime of comfort and peace when I was a child.

Bedtime was miserable for me when I was seven. The attic door just outside my bedroom had an unfriendly habit of breaking open by itself in the night, and I was sure that it was because of some fearful monster on its way out to get me.

“It’s an old house, Lois,” my mother explained as she talked to me one night. “The door is broken.”But her comforting words were no match for my wild imagination. “Can you read to me to help me go to sleep?”I asked. Mom sat at my bedside and read me a story, and another, and another, until I finally got to sleep, with my toy tiger, Mumsy, on my chest.

During the day, the attic was anything but frightening. The very next afternoon my friends and I ran up and down its steps for fun. First they were a mountain to climb, then a ship’s sail, and then a wonderful castle staircase. “See, Mumsy,”I said, climbing over boxes and furniture we’d stored. “There is nothing scary here.”But when night fell, everything changed. The attic’s rough wooden floor and unfinished walls were weakly lit by bare bulbs that made everything look ambiguous. Those piles of storage boxes and old furniture took on more threatening shapes. What could be moving in the shadows of the crawl space(低矮的空间)? I was terrified I was going to find out.

“You played up there all day---you know that there’s nothing to worry about,” my mom reassured me that night, kissing me on the forehead. “You have Mumsy here to keep an eye on things, don’t you?”“I guess so,”I said. Mom was right. Mumsy was a fierce tiger, after all, proud and unafraid. I hugged him and closed my eyes. Mon read some interesting stories to me and left me to my bedtime dreams.
