RIO DE JANEIRO - China claimed its first cycling Olympic gold after Gong Jinjie and Zhong Tianshi won the women's team sprint(团体竞速赛)in the Rio Olympic Velodrome(自行车赛车场)on Friday.

The Chinese beat Daria Shmeleva and Anastasiia Voinova of Russia in the final to take the gold, while the bronze went to Germany who defeated Australia. Gong Jinjie and Zhong Tianshi set a new world record of 31,928 seconds in the first round after breaking an Olympic record in the qualifying round(预选赛). Gong and Zhong's achievement is inseparable from their French coach Benoit Vetu's training,

"I moved my family to China for this job. It's to achieve this dream that I have stayed in the cycling training base. It was a hard decision. but it worth it. I have no regrets now," Vetu told China Daily.com.cn

Under Benoit Vetu's coaching, Gong and Zhong won in their debut(首次比赛)at the Incheon(仁川)Asian Games after teaming up in 2014. And at the 2015 UCI World Track Cycling Championships, they won the gold by breaking the world record.

As they improved continually in their races, their trust into Vetu also increased. "We trust each other and there are no problems in our cooperation. We admire him, and he feels the same way about us. He understands us, is familiar with our emotions and when to encourage us." Zhong told china daily.com.cn about their coach after the race.

My husband and son took a New York-to-Milwaukee flight that was supposed to leave Friday at 11:29 am. The flight boarded after 4 pm and didn’t leave the gate until 4:40, and half an hour later the pilot announced it would be another hour until takeoff. At that point a Jewish family, worried about violating the Sabbath(安息日), asked to get off. Going back to the gate cost the plane its place in line for takeoff, and the flight was eventually cancelled. Was the airline right to grant that request?

                                                              M. W, Norwalk, CONN.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Situations like that can bring out the worst in people. But despite the increasing resentment(怨恨)of a plane full of people, the pilot tried to do the right thing. He went out of his way to satisfy one family’s urgent need. He should not have done so.

Passengers bought tickets in the belief that the airline’s primary goal was to get them to their destination as close to the schedule as possible. Once they got on the plane and the doors are locked, it’s not correct to announce that the rules have changed and that a personal (as opposed to medical) emergency —no matter how urgent — might take precedence(优先).

That would be just as true if turning back to the gate had merely cost a few minutes rather than doomed the flight entirely, since on a plane, even a slight delay can spread outward, from the people in the cabin to those meeting them to the passengers waiting to board the plane for the next leg of its journey and so on. It would also be true if the personal emergency were not religious — if someone suddenly realized she’d made a professional mistake that might cost her millions, and she had to race back to the office to fix it.

If a religious practice does nothing to harm others, then airlines should make a reasonable effort to accommodate it. Though that family has every right to observe the Sabbath, it has no right to enlist an airplane full of captive bystanders to help them do so. By boarding a flight on a Friday afternoon, the family knowingly risked running into trouble. The risk was theirs alone to bear.

For almost 30 years, the United Nations has marked World AIDS Day on December 1.

People often note the number of deaths from AIDS. The virus has killed tens of millions of people since it was first identified in the 1980s.

But on this World AIDS Day, there is more hope than ever before that researchers are getting close to finding a vaccine (预苗) to protect against infection (感染).

Much has happened since the first World AIDS Day in 1988. Countries where people did not talk about the virus now test people and treat those who are infected.

Mothers with HIV—the virus that causes AIDS—can give birth to healthy babies and live to raise them. Drugs can keep the virus from spreading.

And now, scientists are discussing the possibility that a vaccine and cure may be developed.

On Monday, researchers in South Africa began injecting thousands of volunteers with a possible vaccine.

Other researchers are examining whether the body’s own defenses against disease can help fight the virus.

An American study shows this may be possible. One of the researchers was Pablo Tebas of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Tebas spoke to VOA on Skype.

“We infuse (注射) antibodies into the patients, the participants in the study, and we want to see if those antibodies will control the HIV virus—will keep it quiet, and prevent the virus from coming back.”

The research in controlling HIV with antibodies is similar to that being done in the fight against cancer. Proteins are used to attack cancer cells. Like cancer, HIV hides in cells. If a person stops taking anti-AIDS drugs, the virus returns.

The researchers discovered that the antibodies controlled HIV for 21 days. The goal is to find a combination of antibodies that can control the virus for six months to a year. Then, those infected will no longer have to take medicine every day for the rest of their lives.

A new test using two antibodies should begin in the next few months.

While the whole world is showing grief and sympathy for France, America is reminded to be the next target of terrorist attract. “We cannot allow ISIS to have this hiding place in Syria and Iraq from which to plan and direct attacks against us,” said Adam Schiff (Republican Representative). White House officials are seeking to reassure the American public.

“There is not a specific, reliable threat to the homeland at this time, but we are going to be very vigilant,” said President Barack Obama’s deputy national security adviser, Ben Rhodes, on this week.

The public concern is: the Paris attacks demonstrated that terrorists can plan, coordinate and carry out bloody plots with little or no Internet chatter or other communication that may tip off intelligence agencies. If Islamic State caught France by surprise, could it do the same to the United States?

“The reality is: even the best intelligence will not stop a determined enemy that adapts to our defenses, and ISIS has adapted,” said Schiff. Reports that one of the Paris attackers may have been a Syrian refugee will bring increased examination of the Obama administration’s promise to accept 10,000 refugees from Syria.

For months, Republican presidential competitors have criticized the administration’s campaign against IS as unfortunately inadequate. Now, they are disputing White House assurances that Syrians allowed into U.S. will be subjected to thorough selection and examination. “You have a thousand people come in, and 999 are just poor people fleeing poverty and violence. But one of them is an ISIS fighter. If that is the case, then you have a problem, and there is no way to check that out,” said Republican Senator Marco Rubio. “You cannot pick up the phone and call Syria.”

At Saturday’s debate, Hillary Clinton strongly disagreed with Obama’s opinion last week that the Islamic State group has been controlled. But White House officials say the president was referring to the territory controlled by IS in Iraq and Syria, not the terrorist threat caused by the group.

Mark one up for man over the machine. The world champion of the ancient Chinese board game of Go(围棋)has finally found a way to beat Google’s AlphaGo computer, after losing three straight games last week.

Lee Se-dol, the South Korean who has been the top Go player for a decade, was delighted at his first victory, although AlphaGo had already clinchedthe $1mprize in the best-of-five series. The money will be donated to charity after the final game is held on Tuesday.

“It’s just one game. I’ve never been congratulated so much just because I won one game,”Mr Lee told reporters after the match on Sunday in Seoul.

“This win is invaluable and I would not trade it for anything else in the world,” the 33-year-old grandmaster said with a big smile. Mr Lee acknowledged he hadunderestimatedAlphaGo’s skills, but said the software was not perfect.

Demis Hassabis, chief executive of Google Deepmind, the developer of the computer program, said the match result would provide a valuable lesson for his team to identify and address AlphaGo’s weakness.

“He was too good for us today and pressured AlphaGo into a mistake that it couldn’t recover from,” Mr Hassabis tweeted.

Could it be your after—dinner coffee that keeps you awake at night? Perhaps you are one of those people who simply can’t take coffee in the evening, because the caffeine in it makes you excited. Coffee with caffeine(咖啡因) does make some people restless, just when they want to go to sleep. So, before you rush to the doctor for “something to make you sleep”, change over to H. A. G. — a new kind of caffeine — free coffee, the nicest coffee so far. This kind of coffee is made by modern scientific methods and has come to the perfection for the greatest pleasure that drinking good coffee gives, but without any harmful effects. H. A. G. is the coffee that continental people, who are such great coffee drinkers, have been taking in the evenings for over 50 years. Make your choice of H. A. G. Enjoy good coffee and good sleep. Health food stores and most groceries have H. A. G. coffee. If there is any difficulty, send (with your name and address) for free sample(样品) from the A. A. SUPPLY CO. LTD. 31/32 Priory Park Road, London, N. W. 6.

              Dear Alcohol,

Youˈve been around forever. I can remember all the pain youˈve caused for me.

Do you remember the night you almost took my fatherˈs life? I do. He loves you. Sometimes I think he loves you more than he loves me. Heˈs addicted to you, to the way you promise to rid him of his problems only to cause more of them. You just sat back and laughed as his car went spinning through the street, crashing into two other cars. He wasnˈt the only one hurt by you that night.

Do you remember the night of my first high school party? You were there. My friends were intrigued by you. They treated you as if they were never going to see you again, drinking all of you that they could. I spent two hours that night helping my friends who had fallen completely. "Iˈm so embarrassed," they said as I held their hair back so that they could vomit . "Iˈm sorry," they said when I called taxies for them, walking them out and paying the driver in advance. "This wonˈt happen again," they said as they were sent to the hospital to have their stomachs pumped. Two 15-year-old girls slept in hospital beds that night thanks to you.

Do you remember the night when you took advantage of my 17-year-old neighbor who had to drive to pick up his sister from her dance lessons? Do you know how we all felt when he hit another car and killed the two people in the other car? He died the next morning too. His sister walked home from her dance lesson, and passed police cars and a crowd of people gathering on the sidewalk just two blocks away from the dance studio. She didnˈt realize her brother was in the midst of it all. She never saw him again. And itˈs all your fault.

I wish youˈd walk out of my life forever. I donˈt want anything to do with you. Look at all the pain youˈve caused. Sure, youˈve made people happy too from time to time. But the damage youˈve caused in the lives of millions is inexcusable. Stop luring (引诱) in the people I love. Stop hurting me, please.

                                                                                                                                              Sincerely,

                                                                                                                                             Anonymous
