            • 1. The way we communicate with our children is extremely important. (1)______  Communicating effectively with your children will make them perform better and try hard to achieve their goals. Here are some tips to help you communicate with your children.
(2)______ Let them know that you accept them completely and love them. This will make them more confident when they communicate with others.
Readily listen to your children. Let them know that you're interested and want to know all about it.(3)______
A very important key to effective communication is eye contact(接触). It is not just for when you are giving them commands. (4)______
Use polite language with children. Using words like please, sorry, thank you, etc. will not only make them polite, but will also make them feel important.
Always use positive words.(5)______ Always tell them that they are good and that you know they can do things wonderfully.

G: Look at them even when they're telling you their playground experiences.
            • 2. (1)______The average American moves every five years. People drive straight into their garages, hire lawn services, hang out in their backyards instead of their front porches (前走廊). These days, neighbors don't even know each other's names.
Good neighbors and good friends are a lot like electricity or running water.(2)______
The surprising thing is that all it takes to strengthen your relationship with friends and neighbors is respect for their feelings, concern for their property, and a helping hand when it's needed.(3)______
First, be a true friend to people around you.(4)______That is to say, A true friend is one who stays true through it all--marriage, parenthood, new jobs, new homes, or even losses. That situations change doesn't mean the person has to.
Besides, friendships fade away if there isn't a balance between the give and the take.(5)______    Be sensitive to how much your friend can and can't offer you----time, energy, or help-----and don't step over the line. Remember: friendships that tire each other will not last. If a friendship is out of balance in this way, you'll need to consider the situation.

              A. Modern life is a lot less to the advantage of friendships and neighborliness than it used to be.
B.A friend in need is a friend indeed.
              C. We don't know how much we depend on them until we lose them.
              D. Here're two important ways to deepen your friendship with people around in your life.
              E. A true friend doesn't flee when changes come about.
              F. Take your time,please.
              G. So make sure you aren't being a burden to your friends.
            • 3. (1)______The increasing costs make us doubt whether there's real value to a college education. Is the thousands of dollars of debt and the time lost for study worthwhile? The answer may lie in the value of a college education and rates of return on investment.
On the financial side, there's enough data to suggest that oil average a college graduate will earn a great deal more than a high school graduate. In America, over a lifetime a college graduate will earn on average about MYM2.1 million compared to MYM1.2 million for a high school graduate. Compared with the cost of attending a four-year university, about MYM10,000 per year, and even adding the cost of lost working time,(2)______.
College graduates have the possibility of increased earning power. (3)______. The Institute for Higher Education Policy ever published a report stating that people who finished a college or university program experienced a number of assistant (辅助的) benefits. They included higher levels of saving,improved quality of life, more hobbies and free time activities.
And for well-educated people, they tend to be more open-minded and more cultured.(4)______.Many research studies have shown a positive connection between higher education and good health, not only for yourself, but also for your children,
So it appears that there's really much value in a college education.(5)______.Go now!

              A. They also enjoy other benefits.
              B. To encourage us to have a high college education.
              C. Why not go to college and have a high college education?
              D. It costs a lot to go to college or university.
              E. Ifs clearly of financial value to attend university.
              F. Some previous research can prove this.
              G. Besides, college education can even improve your health.

The building of the canal was paid for entirely by the state of New York.(3)______. Between 1825, when the canal was opened, and 1882, when toll charges(过运河费)were stopped, the state collected $121, 461, 891.
For a hundred years before the Erie was built, people had been talking about a canal which could join the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean. The man who planned the Erie Canal and carried the plan through was De Witt Clinton. Those who were against the canal laughingly called it "Clinton's Ditch(沟)".(4)______. He and Governor Morris went to Washington in 1812to ask for help for the canal, but they were unsuccessful.
Clinton became governor of New York in 1817, and shortly afterwards, on July 4, 1817, broke ground for the canal in Rome, N. Y. The first part of the canal was completed in 1820.(5)______. The length of the canal is 363 miles.

              C. The Erie Canal was the first important national waterway built in the US
              D. More workers were needed to build the canal
              E. Clinton talked and wrote about the canal and drew up plans for it
              F. To dig the canal benefited Americans
              G. It joined the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean

              Learn from mistakes

The best way to learn something is to make mistakes first. Thomas Edison, who invented the light bulb, told his colleagues: “Of the 200 light bulbs that didn’t work, every failure told me something I was able to incorporate into the next attempt.” Benjamin Franklin, the US statesman and scientist once said: “I haven’t failed. I have had 10,000 ideas that didn’t work.”

Both these people understood that failures and false starts are the condition of success. In fact, a surprising number of everyday objects had their beginnings in a mistake or a misunderstanding. Post-it notes, packets of crisps and even bread are all unexpected inventions. In 2600 BC, a tired Egyptian slave invented bread when the dough rose during his sleep. And crisps were first cooked by a chef in the USA when a customer complained that his fried potatoes were not thin enough.

In 1968 Spencer Silver was trying to develop a strong adhesive when he accidentally invented a very weak glue instead. His colleague, Art Fry, decided to use it six years later, in 1974, to hold his bookmarks in his books and the post-it note was invented.

Successful businesspeople have often made big, expensive mistakes in their past. When an employee of IBM made a mistake that cost the company $600,000, Thomos Watson, the chairman, was asked if he would fire the man. “Of course not,” he replied. “I have just spent $600,000 training him. I am not going to let another company benefit from experience.”

The important thing to remember is that you need to learn from your mistakes. If you don’t, then there is no sense in making them.

(1)______End-of-year celebrations have been over.(2)______.Next Christmas if we want to avoid the financial headache after all the parties are over,what should we do?Finance experts Paul and Alan share their advice on how to keep the silly season affordable while having the true spirit of Christmas.

              Give from the heart.
"I also believe the true spirit of Christmas is to be generous,but not silly,"says Paul,"and to give gifts has deeper meaning rather than pure dollar value.I love thinking of what this person would truly appreciate.(4)______."Allan says,"My sister moved into her first house recently,so I bought her a drill.Nobody had ever thought of giving her a drill.She loved it very much."

◆Plan your time carefully.When planning your work,you should make a list of things that you have to do.After making this list,you should make a schedule of your time.First your time for eating,sleeping,dressing,etc.Then decide a good,regular time for studying.(42)______.A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems,but it will force you realize what is happening to your time.

◆Develop a good attitude towards tests.The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject.They help you remember your new knowledge.The world won't end if you don't pass a test,so don't be over worried.
You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.

As we all know, friendship plays a very important part in our daily life. In my opinion, people can hardly live without friends. Because when you are down, they will cheer you up; when you are in trouble, they will lend you a hand.
