BEIJING---A bullying(欺凌)incident at a primary school in Beijing should not be bushed off as"a joke that went too far"; rather, faces should be dug out and action should be taken to prevent similar events from happening on campus again, according to experts.
Huang Zifang,a psychologist specializing in children's growth issues, said schools should be careful about taking bullying incidents as mere pranks(恶作剧).
"Instead, they should work to find out the root cause of the incident in a timely manner, guide the children involved to face and handle the incident in a correct way and teach them to behave properly to avoid-similar situations,"Huang said.
She made the comments after a mother in Beijing posted a description online on Thursday of how her 10-year-old son was bullied at Zhongguancun No 2Primary School,a top school in Haidian district.
The mother wrote that her fourth-grade son was the target of bullies who threw a toilet wastepaper basket at him, striking him in the head. The boy was also mocked by his classmates, she said, bringing on acute stress disorder---a mental illness triggered by severe anxiety.
The mother also wrote that the school described the incident as"a joke that went too far"and that the parents of the boy who threw the basket believed their son was"just being naughty".
The article went viral, with many internet users recalling being bullied at school.
Shen Xua,a volunteer from Beijing who has traveled the country for several years to work with schools to reduce bullying, said schools should take responsibility for such incidents and try to make the bullies understand that their behavior is"vicious and harmful"and"not allowed".
"In the long run,a reporting system should be established to root out bullying on campus.Students should be given specific channels to report what they experience to teachers before further measures are taken to deal with incidents,"Shen said.
Huang, the psychologist, said that schools and parents must pay more attention to the ethical(道德的)development and mental health of children, rather than just looking at their academic performance.
On Saturday,Zhongguancun No 2 Primary School released a statement on its social media account saying that it had talked to the parents on both sides and would make further efforts to achieve an outcome satisfactory to all parties.

Pigeons may only have a brain the size of a thimble (顶针), but it appears that pigeons can categorize and name objects in the same way human children learn new words.

A new study from the University of Iowa has shown that the birds are capable of learning to categorize 128 different photographs into 16 basic categories.

Scientists taught three pigeons to sort out different kinds of dogs or types of shoes, for example by using a particular symbol in exchange for a reward. When they were shown black and white pictures of previously unseen dogs or shoes, the birds were able to correctly match these with the corresponding symbols.

The scientists behind the project say this is a similar approach taken by young children when they are first learning words for objects. However, the researchers said it took their birds around 40 days to perfect the task of learning just 16 categories.

Professor Edward Wasserman, who led the work, said: "Our birds' rate of learning appears to have been quite slow. Would children learn faster than pigeons? Almost certainly. However, our pigeons came to the experiment with no background knowledge at all. Thus, the more relevant comparison group may be newborn babies, who indeed take 6-9 months to learn their first words."

Writing in the journal Cognition, the researchers said their experiment was a very simple mirror of the way children are taught words-by their parents pointing to pictures and asking them to name the object.

Pigeons are known to be smarter than many birds. Professor Bob McMurray, who also took part in the study, said the results showed that human learning is not as unique as was previously believed.

He said: "Children are facing a huge tusk of learning thousands of words without a lot of background knowledge to go on. For a long time, people thought that such learning is special to humans. What this research shows is that the ways in which children solve this huge problem may be shared with many species.

              (1) What's the main idea of this passage?
              A. Pigeons and young children take a similar approach to learn words.
              B. Pigeons are known to be smarter than newborn babies.
              C. Pigeons recognize objects in the same way children learn words.
              D. Pigeons are unique as they can learn like humans.
              (2) Why does the writer think newborn babies are the more relevant comparison group?
              A. They don't have any background knowledge.
              B. They learn relatively slow.
              C. Pigeons end newborn babies learn at a similar speed.
              D. Young children are smarter.
              (3) From the passage, we can learn that ________.
              A. learning without background knowledge is unique to humans
              B. many species may be able to learn without background knowledge
              C. pigeons are able to solve many huge problems
              D. pigeons are known to be the smartest birds
              (4) The passage is intended to ________.
              A. introduce pigeons B. prove a fact
              C. support en opinion D. report a study

Styrofoam, or polystyrene, is a light-weight material, about 95 percent air, with very good insulation properties, according to Earthsource. org. It is used in products from cups that keep your drinks hot or cold to packaging material that protects items during shipping.

With the above good features, Styrofoam still enjoys a bad reputation. It cannot be recycled without releasing dangerous pollution into the air. The U. S.. Environmental Protection Agency says it is the fifth-largest creator of harmful waste.

But now the common worms which are usually disgusting can come to the rescue, specifically, mealworms. Scientists from the U. S. and China have discovered that mealworms can digest plastic. One mealworm can digest a pill -sized amount of plastic a day. Study co-author Wei-Min Wu says that in 24 hours, the plastic is turned into carbon dioxide.

Since Styrofoam has no nutrition at all, are the worms hurt by eating plastic? Much to the scientists' surprise, the study found that worms eating Styrofoam were as healthy as worms eating bran(谷糠).

The researchers will study the worm's eating habits and digesting system, looking to copy the plastic breakdown but on a larger scale. Once the way can be put into practice, it will make a revolutionary difference to the disposal of plastic.

"Solving the issue of plastic pollution is important", says Wu, a Stanford University environmental engineering instructor. After all, our earth is small and landfill space is becoming limited with too much garbage waiting to be dealt with, he says.

About 33-million tons of plastic are thrown away in the United States every year. Plastic plates, cups and containers take up 25 percent to 30 percent of space in America's landfills. One Styrofoam cup takes more than 1 million years to recycle in a landfill, according to Cleveland State University.

              (1) What do we know about Styrofoam?
              A. It is harmful when recycled
              B. It is a weightless material.
              C. It can be used to cool drinks.
              D. It is usually used on ships.
              (2) What can we infer from the third paragraph?
              A. Mealworms are not bad in their nature.
              B. Mealworms can rescue people's lives.
              C. Mealworms have amazing digesting power.
              D. People misunderstood mealworms in the past.
              (3) Why will researchers study the worm's eating habits and digesting system?
              A. To help develop their digesting ability.
              B. To find ways to help mealworms grow larger.
              C. To make sure of their safety after eating plastic.
              D. To imitate their way of breaking down plastic.
              (4) In the future, plastic may be recycled ________.
              A. by raising amounts of mealworms
              B. without sending out dangerous pollution
              C. by environmental engineering instructors
              D. using a method inspired by eating mealworms
              (5) What's the main idea of this passage?
              A. Styrofoam is widely used in daily life.
              B. Plastic recycling may be no more a problem.
              C. Mealworms are genius at eating plastic.
              D. Plastic can be turned into carbon dioxide.
