Do you ever run out of great books to read? So what should I read next? Is fast-paced crime fiction your thing?
Try the new Patricia Cornwell book, Scarpetta(Putnam). She is such an able writer and handles complex forensic(法庭的) intelligence with ease. You need to be prepared, though, for the world you're entering—this isn't for the faint of heart, let's say.
If peace is more your thing, try Mary Pipher's wonderful new book, Seeking Peace: Chronicles of the Worst Buddhist in the World (Riverhead). Mary is a lovely, comfortable writer who takes the reader through her personal awakening after reputation and fortune came her way. Even if you've never experienced life as a bestselling writer (as she has done, in her book years back, Reviving Ophelia), you'll totally understand and sympathize with her renewed need for privacy, distance and quiet.
What if you want a straightforward, totally thrilling read with vivid characters, set about World War II? You cannot go wrong with Jim Lehrer's new novel, Oh, Johnny(Random House), about a young Marine whose life is changed forever when he meets a woman on his way to war. His relationship with her lasts him through danger and hardship, and there's an impressive ending. See our interview with the productive novelist/newsman in the current issue of Reader's Digest (March, on stands now), by the way, for insight into the very talented Mr. Lehrer and what interests him.
Well, what about something wickedly funny and totally offbeat? Does the name Carrie Fisher do anything for you? Try her vivid and new life in Hollywood and elsewhere, Wishful Drinking(Simon & Schuster). Be prepared for humor as sharp as knives.

I was loading (装载) my truck to go to the market when I hurt my left eye. The pain was like a hot sword(剑) being shoved through my head. I fell down on my hands and knees, and I knew it was bad.
I was taken to the Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, and the doctors operated on me several times but couldn’t save my left eye. When they told me the news, I wanted to die.
Even after I got my fake(假的) eye, I couldn’t shake the sadness. To make matters worse, I lost my job as a transportation officer because of my lost eye. But one morning, I woke up and the TV was on, and there was a 16-year-old girl who had been badly burned on her face and legs. Her situation was much worse than mine. She wore a big smile and seemed to look right at me and said, “You can’t ever give up.” At that moment, I thought, “This is just an eye. Get over it.” And I did.
It’s been almost 12 years since my accident, and there’s nothing I can’t do now that I used to do. And although I didn’t get my old job back, I got my license again.
I read a story once. In that story, a man was feeling bad because he had no shoes until he met a man who had no feet. No matter how terrible your problem is, remember there’s always someone somewhere who’s worse off. So cheer up and smile at life!
小题1:Because of the accident, the writer _______.
A.lost both of his hands.B.lost one of his eyes
C.was paid a lot of moneyD.knew he was not a good driver
小题2:According to Paragraph 2, when the writer heard the bad news, _______.
A.he decided to refuse the fake eyeB.he accepted the fact immediately
C.he decided to live a happier lifeD.he felt extremely sad
小题3:What can we learn from the passage?
A.The writer got his old job backB.The writer can’t see things clearly
C.The writer is not strong-mindedD.The writer has got over the accident
小题4:By writing his story, the writer most probably wants to _______.
              A.tell us his unusual experience
B.ask people to help the disabled
C.advised us to be positive(积极乐观的) about life
D.tell us that accident can happen anytime

IN a 30-minute film called The Chase, a girl tries to catch a thief and finally takes him down with martial arts (武术) skills.
Anything special? Thirteen-year-old US girl Sophia Tran wrote, shot and performed in the film. She played the girl in the movie and her father, Steven, played the thief.
Now an eighth-grader at Ladera Ranch Middle School, California, Tran wrote The Chase over the summer of 2008. She shot the film in the fall of 2008 before holding the premiere (首映式) at her home in January the next year.
“It is important to have passion in filmmaking or you are not going to make it,” the quiet teenager said with a smile. “Also, you should read a lot of books about filmmaking.”
Tran thinks that many screenplays don't have any “suspense (悬念) as the film progresses.” She is now working on a movie which she says will be a suspense story.
Steven says his daughter has enjoyed drama and action movies since she was 7.
“She started to be interested in how stories are adapted (改编) to a screenplay,” Steven said. “And she wrote her own books when she was in second grade.”
But Tran also has a big heart. She sold DVD copies of her film The Chase for $10 each to family and friends. She then donated $400 from the DVD sales to her school to buy new computers.
              57.   Sophia Tran played _____ in her movie.
              A. a thief          B. a doctor                       C. a girl           D. a police woman
              58.   Sophia Tran shot the film _____.
              A. last year        B. in January                            C. last summer     D. less two years ago
              59.   Sophia Tran thinks ______ are important for successful filmmaking.
              A. characters         B. stories       C. passion and knowledge D. passion and experience
              60. According to Sophia Tran, many screenplays are poorly written because _____.
              A. they don't keep readers excited                      B. they mostly end in an unexpected way
              C. their dialogues are not interesting                   D. they are not inspiring

A young boy was sitting in the back seat of the car eating an apple. He asked his father, “Why does my apple turn brown?” his father answered, “When the skin is removed, air reaches the flesh of the apple and causes oxidation. This changes the apple’s molecular structure and results in a brownish color.” The boy asked, “ Daddy, what are you talking about?”
I know how that boy feels. Sometimes I want answers to some of those confusing questions that we all meet with, such as how to get through difficult times or what to do in a tough situation. I just want to get it right.
The problem is that I don’t always have the answer I need. Nobody else seems to have them, either. So I go on making mistakes and think that I’ll never get it right.
Often I didn’t know what to do. I often made poor choices, but I gradually improved. Then I realized that I don’t HAVE TO always get it right. I don’t have to always know what to do all the time. All I really need to do is try my best, learn from my mistakes and go on.
Dr. Leo Buscaglia once said, “ No one gets out of this world alive, so the time to live, learn, care, share, celebrate and love is now. That would be pretty hard to do when you’re waiting for all the answers first.”
So you got it wrong. You made a mistake. So what should you do next? Forgive yourself and try again. You may not get out of this world alive, but you can get plenty of life out of this world if you are not too worried about always getting it right.
小题1: In the beginning, the author tells the story of a boy and his father to ____.
A.show that the father is very knowledgeable
              B.say something interesting about apples
C.introduce the subject of the passage
D.show that children nowadays ask more questions
小题2: How did the boy feel when he heard his father’s explanation?
A.He admired his father very much.
B.He knew what his father meant.
C.He thought that he had learned a lot from his father.
D.He felt it was difficult to understand.
小题3: What do Dr. Leo Buscaglia’s words mean?
A.We must make right choices as often as possible.
B.We can search the answers when enjoying life itself.
C.People have many desires when they enter the world.
D.It is hard to lead a happy and satisfying life.
小题4: What can be concluded from the passage?
A.We should learn from our mistakes and try again.
B.We should try to learn and understand the answers to questions.
C.It is very important to try to avoid mistakes.
D.It is our duty to make the world a better place.
小题5: What is the style of the passage?

Nearly everyone is shy in some ways. If shyness is making you uncomfortable, it may be time for a few
lessons in self-confidence. You can build your confidence by following some suggestions from doctors and
              psychologists.
Make a decision not to hold back in conversations. What you have to say is just as important as what other
people say. And don't turn down party invitations just because of your shyness.
Prepare for yourself for being with others in groups. Make a list of the good qualities you have. Then make
a list of ideas, experiences, and skills you would like to share with other people. I think about what you would
like to say in advance. Then say it.
If you start feeling self-conscious in a group, take a deep breath and focus your attention on other people,
Remember, you are not alone. Other people are concerned about the impression they are making, too.
No one ever gets over being shy completely, but most people do learn to live with their shyness. Even
entertainers admit that they often feel shy. They work at fighting their shy feelings so that they can face the
cameras and the public. Just making the effort to control shyness can have many rewards. But perhaps the
best reason to fight shyness is to give other people a chance to know about you.
              1. The main purpose of the article is to _____.
              A. explain how shyness developed.
              B. recommend ways of dealing with shyness
              C. persuade readers that shyness is natural.
              D. prove that shyness can be overcome
              2. Which of these can you conclude from reading the article? A. Shy people never have any fun.
              B. Entertainers choose their work to fight shyness.
              C. The attempt to overcome shyness is always successful.
              D. The attempt to overcome shyness is always rewarding.
              3. Who probably gives the suggestion for fighting shyness?
              A. The author of the article
              B. Shy men and women
              C. Doctors and psychologists
              D. Popular entertainers

I live in the land of Disney, Hollywood and year - round sun. You may think people in
such an attractive, fun-filled place are happier than others. If so, you have some mistaken
ideas about the nature of happiness.
Many intelligent people still think fun equals happiness. The truth is that fun and happiness
have little or nothing in common. Fun is what we experience during an act. Happiness is
what we experience after an act. It is a deep, long-lasting emotion.
Going to an amusement park or a ball game, watching a movie or television are fun
activities that help us relax, temporarily forget our problems and maybe even laugh. But
they do not bring happiness, because their positive effects end when the fun ends.
I have often thought that if Hollywood stars have a role to play, it is to teach us that
happiness has nothing to do with fun. They have constant access to exciting parties, fancy
cars, expensive homes, everything that spells "happiness". But in memoir(回忆录)after
memoir, they expose the unhappiness hidden beneath all their fun: depression, alcoholism,
drug addiction, broken marriages and loneliness.
Ask a bachelor why he resists marriage even though he finds dating to be less and less
satisfying. If he is honest, he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment. For
commitment is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled with fun, adventure and excitement.
Marriage has such moments, but they are not its most distinguishing features.
Similarly, couples that choose not to have children are deciding in favor of painless fun
over painful happiness. They can dine out whenever they want and sleep as late as they want.
Couples with babies are lucky to get a whole night' s sleep. I don't know any parent who
would choose the word fun to describe raising children.
Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the
most liberating realizations we can ever come to. It liberates time: now we can devote more
hours to activities that can truly increase our happiness. It liberates money: buying that new
car or those fancy clothes that will do nothing to increase our happiness now seems pointless.
And it frees us from envy: we now understand that all those rich and famous people we were
so sure are happy because they are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all.

              1. What is the passage mainly about?_____
              A. Fun and happiness.
              B. Success and satisfaction.
              C. Marriage and commitment.
              D. Entertainment and responsibility.
              2. The author probably agrees that _____.
              A. fun creates long - lasting satisfaction
              B. long - standing fun may lead to happiness
              C. fun is short-lived while happiness is long-lasting
              D. fun provides enjoyment while pain leads to happiness
              3. What does the author think of marriage?______
              A. It ends in pain.
              B. It means commitment.
              C. It affords greater fun.
              D. It leads to raising children.
              4. If one gets the real meaning of happiness, he ______.
              A. will start a business
              B. won't place too much value on money
              C. will seek for freedom
              D. won't devote himself to his family

We all know that money can't make us happy, but many times we act as if we'd be
happier with a bit more money. We are conditioned to want to be richer; we are trained
to want the latest style that television tells us; we want to earn more money because then
              we'll have a good life.
But none of that will make us happier. And the sad thing is that it can take us decades
of pursuing (追求) wealth and expensive things before we realize that. So what will bring
us happiness? Luckily, there are three things that don't cost anything. Here they are:
Good relationships. We have a human need to be close with other human beings. Having
good, supportive friendships, a strong marriage or loving relationships with our family members
will make us much more likely to be happy. Therefore, take time, today, to stay with your
loved ones, to tell them what they mean to you, to listen to them, and to develop your r
              elationships with them.
Positive thinking. Optimism(乐观) is one of the best indicators of people who lead a
happy life. Happy people feel empowered, in control of their lives. So why not make
positive thinking a habit? In fact, this should be one of the first habits you develop.
Flow. This is a popular concept on the Internet these days 一 the state we enter when
we are completely focused on the work or task. Having work and leisure(休闲)that gets
you in this state of flow will almost undoubtedly lead to happiness. People find the greatest
enjoyment not when they're passively mindless, but when they're absorbed in a mindful
              challenge.
If you are interested in some kind of work and keen on some kind of hobbies, it is not a
bad idea. Turn off the TV 一 this is the opposite of flow 一 and then go outside and do
something that truly makes you active.

The mothers met while walking their beloved dogs in the local park, the Donald Mcdonald Reserve,
several years ago and developed a friendship that began with small talk about their pets. This quickly turned
to afternoon get-together, where kids, dogs and grown-ups formed firm friendships.
Now the pair and their pets meet several times a week on the grass near Sandringham College, a place
for a huge network of dog owners who have formed all kinds of friendships and a good old-fashioned sense
of community. Dogs, it seem, are good for social life.
The combination (结合) of excited kids and dogs could be a recipe (处方) for disaster and Miller says it
is surprisingly harmonious (和谐的). "There are some other people who don't have kids but have started to
meet us quite regularly," she says. "the other day, there were seven dogs, five adults and six children all
              walking around the park together."
Friendships formed through pets seem to cross cultural and age barriers (阻碍) and often include helping
when someone is sick or needs help to care for a bet. A woman says she's answered several SOS calls from
elderly people who have become ill suddenly and need a help. "The friendships are such that you see these
people every day and you get to know them and they trust you with their pets and know they can call you at
              the last minute," she says.
One dog owner says that, even as a child, she noticed how dogs could act as conversational ice-breakers
for adults. Like people, dogs are also social creatures. "Dogs need to meet others," she says, "they are pack
              animals."

              2. What's the result of the combination of dogs and people?
              [     ]

              A. Dogs may cause disasters for children.

              C. People without children are lonely.
              D. The park is very crowded.
              3. How do people benefit from friendships formed through pets?
              [     ]

              A. People know each other too well to have secrets.

characters. For them, the last film isn't just a goodbye to a decade (十年) of magic, but the close of their
              childhoods.
"We are the Harry Potter generation," Canadian Andrea Hill, 19, told The Vancouver Sun. "We started
in elementary school, reading about a boy our age who was going through the same things we were going
through. We grew up, so did he."
For Emmy Chahal, an 18-year-old student, the series has been an inspiring journey. "That first book
was what sparked (激发) my love of literature (文学). It was the catalyst (催化剂) for everything-really
teaching me to appreciate my friends, and to face difficulties with a sense of courage (勇气)," she said.
"I have a sense of grief (伤心). The end of the movies is kind of the end of my childhood, too."
Fortunately, to the delight of die-hard fans, there are many things that keep the boy wizard alive. For
example, in June this year, a Harry Potter theme park opened in Florida, US.
Some schools in the US and UK also have Quidditch teams-players ride broomsticks (扫帚). "We're
not waiting anymore to see what happens to Harry next," Hill told The Vancouver Sun. She founded a
Quidditch club at Carleton University in Canada. "We're still engaged (投入) in that magical world."

Once Lu Xun spoke to the young men about the study of foreign languages. He said: "You must not give
up studying foreign languages for even a day. To master a language, words and grammatical rules are not
enough. You must do a lot of reading. Take a book and force yourself to read it. At the same time, turn to
dictionaries and memorize grammatical rules. After reading a book, it's only natural that you won't understand
it all. Never mind. Put it aside, and start another one. In a few months or half a year, go over the first book
again; you are sure to understand much more than before... Young people have good memories. If you
memorize a few words every day and keep on reading all the time, in four or five years, you will certainly be
able to read works in the foreign language."
