What would it be like to walk on Mars? If you could build the highest building in the world, what would it look like? Do you dream of being the next J. K. Rowling? This summer, you can experience all of these things, and more. All you need is an Internet connection and your imagination.

A recent study by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that kids spend an average of 1 hour and 29 minutes online each day. Many kids like to use that time to chat with friends, play games or check emails. But the next time you get on the Web, try exploring the world instead. “With the Internet, you can go back 11,000 years in time,or go 11,000 kilometers across the planet.” said Russell, Web search expert of Google. “The whole scope of history and the world is open to you.”

There is a wealth of information to be found online. For example, if your family is going on vacation somewhere, do a quick online search on the area before you even get in the car. “What's the background of the place; what's the history?” says Russell. “I like to tell my kids, ‘Whenever you have a question, whenever you have a doubt, search it out.’”

Ready to launch a virtual journey of your own? Here are a few starting points to get you thinking and to help you on your way. You can invite your parents along for the ride, too. Always ask for permission before downloading programs and software onto your computer. And check with a parent or an adult before visiting any new Web site.

Navigate the world in 3D with Google Earth. Begin in outer space and zoom (快速移动) into the streets of any city, from Hong Kong to San Francisco. Or visit ancient monuments, watch the changing rainforests over time, and dive underwater to explore tropical reef.

With the Moon in Google Earth tool, you can walk in Neil Armstrong's famous footsteps. Take a guided tour of the moon's surface with Armstrong's fellow shuttle mate astronaut Buzz Aldrin.

When you're exploring that part of the solar system, hop on over to the Red Planet with Google Mars. There, you can move very quickly around the surface and see images from the Mars Rovers.

British scientists say they have developed a new material called Armourgel that could help protect older adults from breaking bones when they fall. Scientists say it is soft enough to be put in normal everyday clothing.

As people get older, many of them develop the disease osteoporosis(骨质疏松症).It makes their bones so weak that even a minor fall can cause a bone to break. In some cases, older adults can die from breaking bones or from problems resulting from them.

Armourgel is a combination of two new man-made materials. These materials quickly take in or absorb energy when they hit something, this protects whatever is behind the material.

"Itˈs soft and flowable so it moves with the musculature of the body but when you impact it it momentarily goes rigid,"(僵硬的)said Daniel Plant, the leading researcher, and his team  have joined the material with a substance whose cells collapse when they are hit.

Daniel Plant says, it is the combination of these materials that makes Armourgel special. The new product is said to be much thinner than other protective materials currently being sold.

However, “Bone protectors, no matter how good, are not the best solution."The key is to prevent the bones from losing their mineral content, staying healthy. And then even if you fall, you wonˈt break your bone," said Gambert.

The World Health Organization says there has been a sharp increase in the number of overweight children in developing countries. In African countries, the WHO says the number of overweight or obese children is twice as high as it was 20 years ago. Around the world, about 43 million children under the age of five were overweight in 2013.

Overweight or obese children are more likely to become overweight and obese adults. The condition can generate serious health problems like heart diseases.

Francesco Branca is the director of the WHO Department of Nutrition for Health and Development. He says urban lifestyle makes people eat processed food more often, which has a high sugar, fat and salt content. He also says people are gaining weight because of their lack of activities. They travel in cars or other vehicles more than on foot.

The WHO experts say to lower obesity rates is especially complex in countries that also deal with high rates of infectious (感染性的) diseases.

The WHO has some basic solutions for individuals and countries. The organization says you should lower your intake of fat, sugar, salt and processed food and eat more fruits, vegetables and increase physical activity. The WHO says these actions are especially important for children.

And WHO expert Branea says mothers should breastfeed their babies for at least the first six months of life, if possible. More importantly, governments should consider providing vitamins for children and educational campaigns about problems linked to obesity would also help. In his view, government policies should deal with how food is marketed to children and food producers must balance quality and taste with the dangers of sugar fat and salt.“Reducing the number of overweight children will not be easy. The goal is difficult to meet even in wealthy countries.”he adds.

              (1) What is the main idea of Paragraph 1?
              A. Children in developing countries generally weigh too much.
              B. Overweight children in developing countries have increased greatly.
              C. The number of overweight children in the world has doubled.
              D. The World Health Organization has increased greatly.
              (2) According to Branca, people are becoming overweight because of their changes in ________.
              A. lifestyles   B. transportation
              C. physical condition     D. school educational
              (3) Which of the following words can best replace the underlined word in Paragraph 2?
              A. cure      B. prevent
              C. worsen              D. cause
              (4) According to WHO,which of the following is TRUE?
              A. Poor nutrition is often related to children obesity.
              B. To lower infectious disease rates is more complex than to lower obesity rates.
              C. Eating less sugar and more vegetables helps lower obesity rates.
              D. Increasing physical activity is most effective to lower obesity rates.

She has a bag of chips for a morning snack, drinks water, and has a chicken and lettuce sandwich with a banana for lunch. She likes to play soccer with her friends at lunch and morning break time. She walks home with Julia, has some crackers with cheese and juice for afternoon snack and plays with the dog for a while. She plays computer games for an hour or two before dinner, then has a shower and does her homework. She watches her favorite television show for an hour, then usually goes to bed at about 9:30 pm.

Carl gets up at 8:30 am and has two pieces of bread with jam and a glass of milk for breakfast. His mother drives him to school on her way to work. He eats cookies with juice for morning snack and a pot pie ordered from the school lunch room with juice for lunch. He likes to play card games with his friends at lunchtime and climb the fixed equipment at morning break time. He catches the bus home, has a cereal bar and a can of soda for afternoon snack, then watches some television. He has a shower before dinner, then plays the computer for an hour or two. He goes to bed at about 10:30 pm.

Even if trees cannot walk, they are still on the move.

In parts of the Arctic, entire forests are moving northward. Across the Arctic, temperatures are rising faster than anywhere else in the world. As that happens, the tree line that marks where forests stop and the treeless tundra(冻土地带) starts has been shifting northward. Trees growing along the tree line must protect themselves from the cold wind. To do this, plants tend to grow horizontal(水平的) branches low to the ground. The energy it takes for trees to grow this way means they don't have enough energy to make seeds.

But as Earth's climate has been warming, trees no longer have to just grow horizontally. Many can instead grow up toward the sky. This takes less energy. And with all the leftover energy, these trees have started producing more seeds. This happens especially in places where the white spruce(白云杉) grows.

White spruce, which is a North American tree, is quite able to produce a lot of seeds, which can move long distances in the wind. When wind-blown seeds end up on the tundra beyond the tree line, they eventually can sprout(发芽) new trees. This explains how a forest can move. Of course, the process would work only if the tundra were warm enough. But in recent years, the whole planet has been warming.

New trees will provide shelters for some snow, keeping the sun’s rays from making the white surface disappear. Instead, the trees absorb the sun's heat. This warms the surrounding air. The extra warmth encourages even more trees to produce seeds. That further boosts a forest's ability to expand. In addition, more trees will trap more snow, preventing much of it from being blown away. Snow can trap heat in the soil below, which encourages trees to grow. The recent rise of temperatures has helped more trees grow past the tree line. People worry about impacts on the animals that depend on frozen conditions for food and shelter.

              (1) What is the main cause of the trees in the Arctic moving northward?

              A. The rising temperature.
              B. The shrinking of northern tundra.
              C. The fierce and cold wind.
              D. The abundant resources in the north.
              (2) What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 2 mean?

              A. To produce more seeds.
              B. To move northward.
              C. To respond to the climate change.
              D. To protect themselves from the cold wind.
              (3) What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

              A. New trees can trap the snow, which may make the soil colder.
              B. The trapped snow prevents new trees from producing more seeds.
              C. New trees can make the surrounding air warmer.
              D. New trees can bring more food and shelter for local animals.
              (4) The passage is most probably taken from ______.

              A. a health report
              B. a science report
              C. a fashion magazine

Water is very important to living things. Without water there can be no life on the earth. All animals and plants need water. Man also needs water. We need water to drink, to cook our food and to clean ourselves. Water is needed in offices, factories and schools. Water is needed everywhere.
There is water in seas, rivers and lakes. Water is found almost everywhere. Even in the desert part of the world, there is some water in the air. You can not see or feel it when it is a part of the air. The water in the seas, rivers and lakes is a liquid. The water in the air is a gas, and we call it water vapour (蒸汽).
Clouds are made of water. They may be made of very small drops of water. They may also be made of snow crystals(结晶体). Snow crystals are very small crystals of ice. Ice is frozen water. It is a solid. There can be snow and ice everywhere in winter.
Water may be a solid or a liquid or a gas. When it is a solid, it may be as hard as a stone. When it is a liquid, you can drink it. When it is a gas, you can not see or feel it.

              (1) Where can we find water?

              A. We can find water when it turns into vapour.
              B. Water can be found almost everywhere.
              C. We can see water in deserts here and there.
              D. Water is only in seas and rivers.

CAN you imagine what things will be like 10 years from now? You’ll get up in the morning and brush your teeth in front of the bathroom mirror just like today. But one thing will be different: besides showing your image, the mirror might also show news, traffic, videos and weather information.

When you are ready to go to work, your smart car will drive you to your office. It knows the best route to take to avoid traffic. You will be able to check your e-mails on the dashboard (仪表盘). Every car will even be able to “talk” to others to avoid accidents.
The scenes above aren’t just fantasies. They are the latest concepts and inventions presented at last month’s Mobile World Congress, a yearly trade show held in Barcelona, Spain.
At the show, people were able to experience new technologies and mobile devices (装置) that are highly likely to enter their daily lives in the near future.
For example, a new fitting room was introduced that lets you try on clothes virtually. It has 360-degree mirrors that create a 3-D image of you in the clothes, and this image can be sent to your phone for you to decide later which items to buy.
On the street, photos of products were placed on posters with NFC tags (标签) – a special code (编码) a bit like a 2-D bar code. You could hold your phone up to the tags to add those items to your shopping basket online, pay for them with your phone and have them sent to your home.
As The Guardian noted, the Mobile World Congress shows how electronic devices are becoming smarter by the day. Soon, you might find yourself asking your washing machine: “How are you getting on?” To which it will reply: “Almost there, sir; I’ll be done in 15 minutes.”

              (1) What is the purpose of the first two paragraphs?
              A. To describe some scenes from a science fiction movie.
              B. To show what life will be like in 50 years.
              C. To introduce a trade show about new technologies.
              D. To get us to think about how technology has changed our life.
              (2) We can learn from the text that in the future ______.
              A. mirrors will be able to show your work plans.
              B. cars will be able to drive themselves.
              C. people will no longer go to stores.
              D. clothes will be able to change their sizes.
              (3) Which of the following best describes the author’s attitude in the last paragraph?
              A. Confident.  B. Doubtful.

              Paragraph 1

Scientists have learned a lot about the kinds of food people need. They say that there are several kinds of food that people should eat every day. They are: (1) green and yellow vegetables of all kinds. (2) citrus(柑桔) fruits and tomatoes; (3) potatoes and other fruits and vegetables; (4) meat of all kinds, fish and eggs; (5) milk and foods made from milk; (6) bread or cereal(谷类), rice is also in this kind of food; (7) butter, or something like butter.

People in different countries and different places of the world eat different kinds of things. Foods are cooked and eaten in many different kinds of ways. People in different countries eat at different times of the day. In some places people eat once or twice a day; in other countries people eat three or four times a day. Scientists say that none of the differences is really important. It doesn’t matter whether foods are eaten raw(生的) or cooked, canned or frozen. It doesn’t matter if a person eats dinner at 4 o’clock in the afternoon or at eleven o’clock at night. The important thing is what you eat every day.
