Science has a lot of uses.It can uncover laws of nature, cure diseases, make bombs, and help bridges to stand up.Indeed science is so good at what it does that there's always a temptation (诱惑) to drag it into problems where it may not be helpful.David Brooks, author of The Social Animal:The Hidden Sources of Love,Character, and Achievement, appears to be the latest in a long line of writers who have failed to resist the temptation.
Brooks gained fame for several books. His latest book The Social Animal, however,is more ambitious and serious than his earlier books. It is an attempt to deal with a set of weighty topics. The book focuses on big questions:What has science revealed about human nature? What are the sources of character? And why are some people happy and successful while others aren't?
To answer these questions,Brooks surveys a wide range of disciplines.Considering this, you might expect the book to be a dry recitation (背诵)of facts. But Brooks has structured his book in an unorthodox (非常规的),and perhaps unfortunate way.Instead of introducing scientific theories,he tells a story, within which he tries to make his points, perhaps in order to keep the reader's attention. So as Harold and Erica, the hero and heroine in his story, live through childhood,we hear about the science of child development and as they begin to date we hear about the theory of sexual attraction.Brooks carries this through to the death of one of his characters.
On the whole,Brooks'story is acceptable if uninspired. As one would expect, his writing is mostly clear and,to be fair, some chapters stand out above the rest.I enjoyed, for instance, the chapter in which Harold discovers how to think on his own. While Harold and Erica are certainly not strong or memorable characters, the more serious problems with The Social Animal lie elsewhere. These problems partly involve Brooks'attempt to translate his tale into science.

Some years ago industries had more freedom than they now,and they did not need to be as careful as they must today.They did not need to worry a lot about the safety of the new products that they developed.They  took little notice of the health and safety of the people who worked for them.Often new products were dangerous for the people who used them and conditions in the work place had very bad effects on the health of the workers.
Of course,sometimes there were real disasters which attracted the attention of governments and which showed the need for changes.Also scientists who were doing research into the health of workers sometimes produced information which governments could not ignore.At such times,there were inquiries into the causes of the disasters or the problems.New safety rules were often introduced as a result of these inquiries; however,the new rules came too late to protect the people who died or who became seriously ill.
Today many governments have special departments which protect customers and workers.In the U.S,for example,there is a department which tests new airplanes and gives warnings about possible problems.It also makes the rules that aircraft producers must follow.Another department controls the foods and drugs that companies sell.A third department looks at the places where people work,and then reports any companies that are breaking the laws which protect the health and safety of workers.Of course,new government departments and new laws cannot prevent every accident or illness,but they are having some good results.Our work places are safer and cleaner than before.The planes and cars which we use for travel are better.Producers are thinking more about the safety and health of the people who buy and use their products.

56.What had bad effects on the health of the workers?(No more than 6words) ______
57.In what ways do the departments protect customers and workers?(No more than 20words) ______

59.What is the passage mainly about?(No more than 15words) ______
60.Do you think working or living place is safer and cleaner than before?Please give one or two examples.(No more than 20words) ______ .

A crow lived in a thick forest filled with many birds. The crow was very content with his carefree life until he saw a swan one day.The swan was flying over a lake."This swan is so white,"he thought,"and I am so black. It must be the happiest bird in the world."
He shared his thoughts with the swan."Actually,"the swan replied,"I thought so too until I met a parrot. It had brilliant colors of red and blue.No other bird could be happier than the parrot."

I always do voluntary work in the hospital. As a patient visitor,my primary goal is to deliver quality services to patients and families.By providing companionship for patients in a sometimes lonely environment.I try my best to serve and help to diminish the loneliness and frustration patients may feel after staying in a hospital for a stretch of time for weeks or even months.
Every Saturday afternoon for three to four hours, with a list of patients who have requested a patient visitor service,I head up to the 5th,6th,or 7th floor to first visit my priority patients. At the nurse's station,I kindly ask the nurses or the medical staff about the condition of the patients on that unit and confirm that the patients would like a visitor. After receiving an update from the nurse,I gently knock on the door of the patients and enter with a friendly"hello".Then,I introduce myself and again politely ask if they would like a patient visitor.I usually try to prepare a few starting conversation topics such as the current news, sports scores and fun facts. However, the patients usually engage me first in an interesting conversation.
When volunteering as a patient visitor,I spent a lot of time communicating one-on-one with patients.Individual patients had individual needs and possessed extraordinary personal stories. Therefore,I found every visit fascinating. From generous and kind patients,I have learned about their diseases and their course of treatment.Additionally,I learned about literature, life during the Great Depression and wilderness of Northern Minnesota. On the whole, not only did I learn about the hospital settings and system, but I learned about the diverse life of others.
Many of the patients I have visited were truly inspiring and I always admire them for their strength.Although difficult, they were often willing to share their stories of pain, suffering, hopes and optimism.I realize that I am truly grateful and honored that they would share their personal stories with just a volunteer like me.

Green is an important colour in nature. It is the colour of grass and the leaves on trees. It is also the colour of most growing plants.

Sometimes, it describes something that is not yet ripe or finished. For example, a greenhorn is someone who has no experience, who is new to a situation. In the 15th century, a “greenhorn” was a young cow whose horns had not yet developed. A century later, a “greenhorn” was a soldier who had not yet had any experience in battle. By the 18th century, a “greenhorn” had the meaning it has today—a person who is new in a job.

Green is also used to describe the emotion of jealousy(嫉妒). The“green-eyed monster”is an expression used about 400 years ago by William Shakespeare in his play“Othello”.It describes the unpleasant feeling a person has when someone has something he wants. A young man may suffer from the“green-eyed monster”if his girlfriend begins going out with someone else. Or, that“green-eyed monster”may affect your friend if you get a pay rise while he does not.

In most places in the world, a “green light” is a signal to move ahead. In everyday speech, a “green light” means “agree to continue with a project”. We want you to know we have a “green light” to continue this project next week.

Finland is an innovative (创新的)country when it comes to education. It's consistently one of

the highest performing developed countries on the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), an important tool for measuring education systems worldwide. Here are some things Finland does differently — and arguably better — than the US when it comes to education.

              1  Better standardized tests

Finnish students only take one standardized test during their entire primary and secondary

schooling. By contrast, the US, driven by No Child Left Behind requires students in third through eighth grade to take annual standardized tests to track their performance. Critics claim constant testing doesn't make students any smarter but instead creates a "teaching to the test" environment in schools.

              2  More time for play

Students in Finland spend relatively little time on homework, according to the Organization

for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Finnish students spend 2.8 hours a week on homework. This contrasts noticeably from the 6.1 hours American students spend per week. Finns place a lot of value on free time and play. This "deficit of play" for American students may lead to additional anxiety and other mental health issues, the psychologist and research professor Peter Gray has written.

              3 College is free

In Finland, not only are bachelor degree programs completely free of tuition fees, so are

master and doctoral programs. Students pursue higher education goals without the mountains of

student loan debt that many American students face. And the same goes for foreign students. Tuition is free for any student accepted into a college or graduate program in Finland.

              4  Elevated teaching profession

In Finland, teaching is one of the most revered professions with a relatively high barrier to

entry. Only one in 10 students who apply to teacher education programs are admitted. Teachers in Finland are treated like professors at universities, and they teach fewer hours during the day than US teachers, with more time devoted to lesson planning. What’s more, they also get paid slightly more in Finland. The average teacher in the US makes about $ 41,000 a year, compared to $ 43,000 in Finland, according to OECD data.
